I preferred when Billy slapped the bass line to this song during this particular number when he played it in 2003 DVD of that Live at the Astoria show but whether its slap or fingers Billy's one of thee best bassist that are thankfully still out there & keeping music alive... It might just be my opinion but the talent on the stage that night & the way they played all those numbers during their performance At The Astoria is , to me , is one the best Live Shows to be recorded of one of Steve Vai's concerts as the level of showmanship & performance was just beyond perfect & it still remains my favourite go to live shows of the creme of the crop playing beside Steve & adding showing their talent while enhancing Steve's overall performance that night & what a truly amazing show to be recorded & preserved for all time... In light of this still ongoing coronavirus stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world... .....
Looks like Billy was waaaaaaaay more into this performance than anyone else on stage LOL classic! love it, technical wow with comedy mixed in at the same time! BRAVO!
When I first heard Vai it completely changed how I played guitar, I played alot more, different styles and most importantly I enjoyed it more. He's been my biggest inspiration in guitar playing and music writing :)
Hey guys. I am a FOH man. Here are some protips: guitar amps are MIC'D. This means that FOH doesn't have complete control over that level, esp. since this is a live performance, the levels are going to be mixed for the venue, not for recording. So if the mix seems off, that because it was mixed to sound good LIVE, to the people actually in the room. The reason the lead seems quieter compared to everything else is probably cause vai's amp is loud, so they had to raise everything up to compensate
Jakob Strand OMFG YES. I love it. I listened to the original crying machine and this one shits all over it in a profound way. That telecaster just makes this so awesome along with everything else.
Billy Sheehan you make me smile. He is having so much fun out there. You know as they said, both of them probably never had a struggle with music in their life because they love it so much. Achieving their perception of perfection in their styles are their hobby. I wish I had the attitude they did to keep pushing on. That's what separate's 90% of guitarists is the dedication and time to craft the style they enjoy. Good listening!
I love everything about this video. I remember watching it when I was 16 in 2012 and I was looking for a piece to play for my AS music exam (that's junior year age in the American system). I remember watching it when I was a college student in the mid 2010s and was deciding on my first Prestige. I bought the white pearl RG2550Z. Couldn't afford a JEM but I liked the white MIJ Ibanez regardless! I am now fortunate enough to have a stable middle-income job (professional engineer; I design bridges in case you're wondering). I have seen Steve Vai live twice now and I bought a '00 JEM7VWH last year! One of my favorite guitars! Also helps that I am huge Ibanez RG Prestige fan as well. Anyway, I'm drunk and getting sentimental.
I remember watching Steve live, and felt like I was watching God. Meeting him after the show was truly an honor. He gave me a pick and I cannot stop playing with it. Love this guy!!! rock on xx
The faces in the commercials, or from Steve Vai? I have never actually gotten to see this video. I click the link and a commercial comes up. I close it and try again... Ain't never seen Steve Vai on this page. Nova Scotia tourism,,, Febreeze... No Steve Vai.
I am just SO Floored! An example of playing with your heart, your soul, your whole being! I agree that the rhythm guitar was too loud but, but it did bring an previously unheard element to it. As a guitarist, I picked this week to watch Jeff Beck Still on Run, and the two songs of Steve's from this show. I don't know if I should practice more or pack it in after all these years? LOL
Steve Vai is THE ONLY reason I have not yanked the tremolo's from all my guitars and gone strictly to hard-tails. Every time I get sick of floating trems going out of tune, and what not, I watch a Vai performance and am reminded of their usefulness for sonic creativity.
Hmm I think the sax guy is more like... he is not familiar with the style of music and wondering what Steve is playing XD but still going with the groove of the drums in his head though, then he suddenly realizes that he is on camera while staring kind of strange at Steve and this realization forces him to deviate his attention from him and concentrate again in his part of the song although he knows it is not exactly his kind of music!
Good version this...Def needs Mr hamm to play the proper slap line...but considering Billy doesn't slap...its a cracking take on the original. ..better than the version on the astoria gig
These guys make playing classy, fun and exciting that is true showmanship! People can have all the talent in the world and still look boring!! Vai knows this and that's why his shows are so full of life!!!! I love it.. Cheers to one of the greatest stage performers to ever live!!
What the actual fuck !!! Dudes sharing a stage with Steve Vai, and Billy Sheehan and they all be like sitting there going "Yeah, like, whatever, gosh I`m soooooo bored sitting in this chair" ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!!!! I`d be drooling from all areas of my persona !!!!!!!!!!!!
I haven't heard a lot of Sheehan's work, but whenever I do his bass is very treble-heavy. It's nice to hear such a warm tone out of his instrument in this track.
just...... Oh mY gOD......your so Great Steve.......... i realy realy absolutely proud of you....... I hope I want to be a Great Guitarist... LIKE you........... gOD bless and thank you to your videos........ i realy believe

Damn that rhythm guitar really makes this song pop
Billy is the most suitable bassist to play with VAI. The old friends make everything unbelievable !!!
They are best
Oh yes! Energy matches!
The Rhythm Telecaster guy Paid the FOH Engineering $5 to have him Louder in the mix. Great job Telecaster guy lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 that should be his friend and he got it for free🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂
Paid for louder hahahaha
@Jace Wilson how to operate it
Hahahahahaha
Thank you telecaster guy!
Billy's bassline is adding so much more flavor to this song. wow, jsut wow!!!
I actually loved that the rhythm guitar was so ridiculously loud. Studio version left me a bit cold but this live version has the FONK!
fuck that shit. Vai sounded like he was rythim and the rythim sounded like the lead
me too! and that rhythm guitar was begging for Billy Sheenan to slap that bass!
Nope. Rhythm guitar should be under the leas guitar, always.
Vai's style, sweep, accent? just too good....and Billy's bassline??? omg! :)
MILEof dick& NOballs
00:24 He plays his solo while posing for a fan to take a pic like how does he do that
just be LAME is all
Because he's just good like that
That rythm guitar and the brass section make Steve Vai go so funky/disco !
I preferred when Billy slapped the bass line to this song during this particular number when he played it in 2003 DVD of that Live at the Astoria show but whether its slap or fingers Billy's one of thee best bassist that are thankfully still out there & keeping music alive...

That telecaster...omg....takes the song to a new level
Yeah, volume 11...
Can I ask what you are referring to? Is it the guitar that is not the bass and not steve vai?
Yes, correct. :-D
Jakob Strand OMFG YES. I love it. I listened to the original crying machine and this one shits all over it in a profound way. That telecaster just makes this so awesome along with everything else.
Dream in skyes
The rhythm guitar is played by Ross Bolton, I believe. Fantastic work also. Vai and Billy is always fun to watch how they enjoy playing musica!
One of my favorite pieces of Steve's.
Wonderfully written and executed.
Billy Sheehan = Master of bass...
Awesome...
Greatest...
LEGEND.
Love this makes you feel great , love Billy's emotion and SV so chilled as always , oh and the Tele guy wowz
What an awesome bassline!!!!!!! More audible basslines in (modern) music please!!!
Billy Sheehan you make me smile. He is having so much fun out there. You know as they said, both of them probably never had a struggle with music in their life because they love it so much. This blew me away. The whole band killed it. The bass player is having so much fun, I could not help laughing.
Steve and the bass player look like there having fun what a jam
Billy's levels of grooviness are unrivaled
Why would anyone thumbs down this? Awesome performance!
Because they are expecting gay lame discotheque dance song.
1:26 I've never seen anyone jam that hard on a keyboard, rock on dude.
+Ryan M. he's great but no-one brings it to the keys like dr. teeth.
hell yeah! Though you should check out Yoshiki from X japan he goes berzerk on the piano as well ;)
Watch the original through the fire and flames music vid
Well, you've never seen ME then...
I love everything about this video.

I love how the keyboardist is just dancing away in the middle of the stage... Two legends sounding great!
this is what happens when two unique masters meet....explosive talent, contagious euphoria - Billy rules supreme, best bass player around
On his 50's , rocking like he's immortal. Steve Vai
Así es...Stevemmortal Vai
Oh,the shit's gonna come2 an end& THANK GOD
Temazo papá !!! y cómo le dá al bajo Billy Sheehan 👏👏👏
I remember watching Steve live, and felt like I was watching God. Meeting him after the show was truly an honor. He gave me a pick and I cannot stop playing with it. Love this guy!!! rock on xx

This video is actually an instrument of inspiration.
I love the faces Steve. lol
The faces in the commercials, or from Steve Vai? I have never actually gotten to see this video. I click the link and a commercial comes up. I close it and try again... Ain't never seen Steve Vai on this page. Nova Scotia tourism,,, Febreeze... No Steve Vai.
Great song. Vai is really incredible and Sheehan is very good and very happy on stage
This is a great video! (They should have increased the volume on Steve's guitar!)
But why? actually i think it sounds good, one thing maybe rhythm guitar is a bit loud
I am just SO Floored! An example of playing with your heart, your soul, your whole being! I agree that the rhythm guitar was too loud but, but it did bring an previously unheard element to it. Two heroes, music at its finest.
2:28 sax guy is really impressed
Hmm I think the sax guy is more like... he is not familiar with the style of music and wondering what Steve is playing XD but still going with the groove of the drums in his head though, then he suddenly realizes that he is on camera while staring kind of strange at Steve and this realization forces him to deviate his attention from him and concentrate again in his part of the song although he knows it is not exactly his kind of music!
Steve Vai i really like this version ! you are a legend !
Sublime playing from Mr Vai - but who mixed this? Maybe turn Steve's GUITAR up?! ;-)
Yes the rytmic guitar is to loud
Maybe the telecaster player has a secret affair with audio guy thats why he brings up in the mix
That bass line is breathtaking... Holy cow!
Good version this...Def needs Mr hamm to play the proper slap line...but considering Billy doesn't slap...its a cracking take on the original. ..better than the version on the astoria gig
This sounds like a theme song to a very cool late nite show!!!👏🏾👏🏾🔥🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🔥🙅🏾♂️🙅🏾♂️
2:28 Sax man think: "dammit, this guy is real fucking amazing!!!"
You are completely right,,,in most of songs the attention its being given to the lead guitar rhythm deserves some attention as well
WOW, could this video be any sharper?!
+AstraVex The band could all be in suits
Chandler?
Bing!
If it was, the creator would've cut himself

this version is amazing!
0:45 Lydian mode start ON. 😘
He's not just playing a guitar but an art
What the actual fuck !!! Dudes sharing a stage with Steve Vai, and Billy Sheehan and they all be like sitting there going "Yeah, like, whatever, gosh I`m soooooo bored sitting in this chair"
