With a floating bridge, damn! He kept it pretty close to pitch and improvised very well. (For those that don't know, on guitars with whammies like that, you break 1 string the other 5 go out of tune. On a normal guitar, you break a string the other 5 are still fine. He was using the whammy to try to raise and lower the pitch to get it in tune as close as he could on the fly.)
What he did there is something to be studied 1- he immediately switched to trim picking, and put a bit of vibrato while signaling 2- raised the pitch using the whammy bar, to match the original tuning 3- kept soloing on one string till he got the replacement
then why he didn't hold the whammy bar until he picked up the second guitar? tuning goes wrong when a string is broken but not so badly as people say here
Even with the broken string he managed to find the appropiate answers to the song, and when he got the new guitar, he even managed to improvise a restart to the song. I just have no words...
Most comments don't point out is that other 5 strings are not just out of tune when one string broke, Those 5 individual strings all out of tune differently, (for example 6 string goes down 4 whole steps but 4 string goes down a whole octave, and so on) so even if you push whammy bar down you can't put 5 strings back in same turning order before, that's why Steve was only playing on one string.
This is up there with the SRV and BB King string break, simply for the fact that he plays with a floating bridge. Outstanding. Also, when he finally handed off the guitar and it went to drum and bass, you can tell Phillip was like "hell yeah!"
I love how Steve's experience on stage allows him to navigate this situation without the audience necessarily knowing anything went wrong. Flo to the rescue. quite a funny thing but im high af thinking that Steve is the Ronnie O'Sullivan of the guitar world - Very obscure comparison, but Ronnie can pick up almost any queue and not even worry about chalking it to play well. I imagine Steve has the same capability, pick up almost anything and can play it.
I'm utterly shocked how he managed to play that remainder of his playing in tune. With his Ibanez Edge, if you break one of the strings, the fulcrum points mess up and every other string goes out of tune. Must have been setting his hand on the bridge to make it more in tune.
I remember the time when I'm doing a solo with my Ibanez Gio. Then the 2nd string snapped so I have to transpose all of the notes. Still one of my best experience 👍👌
@Eli Lemke Who cares if someone has a shitty guitar? Not everyone can afford expensive ones. It really doesn't matter how bad the guitar is. If you want to play it, play it
@Eli Lemke lmao stupid mentality I have a modded prs standard 24 and a modded gio that trades blows with it BUT my main guitar right now is a modded Yamaha rgx211 that I picked up for 75$ and the neck imo feels better than the prs 🤷🏿♂️ keep spending on high end gear for no one to care about your tone
The craziest thing about this is that all notes on his solos are composed, so there was little space for improvisation like it happens on other cases of broken strings
That’s fucking impressive. I’m ashamed that he can play a floating bridge guitar with a missing string, yet I can’t properly tune a Floyd Rose all the way without my low e constantly popping out 😭
Prolly too late lol but make sure you lock your saddle tight. Not extremely but give it a twist with the short side of the wrench in the screw so you have more leverage otherwise it'll be loose and ur string will keep slipping.
Could be a problem with the saddle, or the nut. Take it to a tech or if you take a torch look inside the saddle and see if its been threaded by the string. Also make sure to stick a table cloth or something under the trem to keep it at the correct height when restringing so the extra tension from the bridge angle doesnt pop the strings out.
He really tested the second guitar too. in his improvised restart, he immediatedly starts using the whammy bar aggressively to see if strings will break. He then over bends strings to check if they will break or go out of tune. He then taps the end of the fret board while holding the 12th fret to check intonation. Then again between the 7th and 12th. Somebody could have been fired 😂
Thats ridiculous ! Sadly, very annoying also. I couldnt even play 1/4 of the crying machine, with all six strings at 1/10 speed. To see his Majesty Mr. Vai so smoothly improvise, adapt and keep the song going (I bet most of the crowd didnt even notice) reminds me why I am NOT a guitar player , by comparison. Truly awesome, the master of guitar.
If you don't play guitar, this would be like playing a brutal video game while applying an exact amount of grip on the controller; too much or too little and you fall off.
im gonna go out on a limb here and say the reason why they didnt switch sooner was because he had cameras on that guitar really think he was quite upset that happened
I don't think he was using his whammy to stay in tune, he just knew which notes to play with the action way off on his b string with hammers on and off etc. Amazing musician!
Only thing is that this is a guitar with a special(floating) bridge and that means if you break a string all the other strings go out of tune. That 1 minute he was playing with a broken string was so difficult, that only a few people in the world would be able to continue playing like that.
Wrong, at this time, he was still using an Ibanez Edge bridge, which still had those defaults of all strings going out of tune if one breaks. I am pretty sure, though, that he got it shortly after this performance. 😂

He uses a Tremel-No. It maintains bridge tension so the other strings stay in tune
Nah, a trem-no has to be previously locked.
And it defeats having a floating bridge which he always uses.
He was way out when that high E popped.
Alex M he switched out Flo and Evo quick too!

Wicked transition when that string broke , virtually unnoticeable

@@tekcxyi9206 both of yall are wrong, he's slightly pressing the whammy bar to make the string match the song
He does have a Tremsetter or some similar device on there so he’ll be out of tune, but not completely in another zip code.
