Come on down to the crossroads-or the CMA Theatre in Nashville-as we walk through the jaw-dropping rig of devilishly talented shredder Steve Vai.
Steve Vai is much more than a great guitarist. The American guitarist has established himself as a key figure in guitar culture, and one of the world’s leading masters of shred. Vai broke on the scene in 1980 as Frank Zappa’s transcriptionist, until Zappa hired Vai, age 20, to join his touring band-Zappa allegedly called Vai his “little Italian virtuoso.”
Bolstering his guitar theatrics with sharp songwriting and producing, Vai went on to conquer the world of guitar music, winning three Grammys and selling 15 million records. PG was lucky to be invited to Vai’s recent show at the Country Music Hall of Fame’s CMA Theatre in Nashville, where his tech, Doug MacArthur, took John Bohlinger through Vai’s jaw-dropping current touring rig.

I saw Steve play in a 300ish seat theater in Bar Harbor last summer. Doug is a cool guy. As everyone was leaving after the show he was tidying up on stage and took the time to ask how the show was. I agree the breakdowns from them are the best but as far as host this is my least favorite, he just seems fake to me and he doesn’t even really listen to the techs, he just says “right” “yeah” then asks the next question and also misses great opportunities to talk about interesting subjects. Seems to make the techs and musicians uncomfortable but that’s just the vibe I get

This may be a weird way to compliment a guitar tech, but this guy is a good public speaker.

This guitar tech is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable! I wonder if he has a youtube channel of him just talking about guitars/gear/luthery... that would be an insta sub for me

What a great idea for monitoring guitars on stage. We always insist on big amps on stage so we can hear because we don’t love the sound of guitar through regular monitors. The drummer gets a little in a side fill next to him but for the most part he wants to hear my amps. Wedged guitar monitors with proper amping and speakers! What a cool solution. Maybe one day we’ll have money to do that!😂

Do what AC/DC does. Their touring rig includes a large Kikusui AC power regenerator system and UPS that ensures that all the sensitive gear (And the stack of Marshalls) all get absolutely consistent power, on voltage and on frequency, no matter what the supply from the house is doing.
