Understanding that Tyr is Odin here; he is surprised that Ragnarok is happening becasue he thought he averted it and watch how the camera angle switches to Tyr when they find out that Groa lied. Really amazing storytelling by Santa Monica
You want really amazing storytelling? How about that awkward moment when you realize the "heroes" destroyed the possibly biggest repository of knowledge and technological advancement in all the realms just to spite Odin. Or how about the Giants being able to teleport in between realms - something that Odin can't do - but instead they chose to teleport into a bag of marbles 5 miles from the Jotunheim gate? Or even the mask leading Atreus to Gram just for the sake of some hel dog action plot convenience? How's THAT for storytelling?
@@Swaggaccino Honestly the story has so many inconsistent and "pointless" moments. The storytelling in GOW2018 was much tighter. I dunno what happened.
@@Swaggaccino I meant in that instance of foreshadowing; what Odin does for knowledge is insane bro; he is willing to kill anyone just to get knowledge. Why would you call it out of spite? He deserved what he got for the mess he has cause. The mask thing was a bit weird; you’re falling for the trick of a diplomatic villain btw
I noticed that too while watching my brother play. The beard and spear make it seem like it’s tyr, until Kratos gets Draupnir and fulfills that prophecy
@@DSTmunebro the top comment on this video is a way bigger spoiler than simply that kratos is the champion not atreus. Like… wven without any spoilers i kind of was thinking that anyway throughout playing… like… how can the kid be champ when the big daddy kratos is still around? Only kratos’ death would have convinced me otherwise.
The level of detail in this game is fantastic. When Atreus says “we know something Odin doesn’t” the musical score slips in odins leitmotif. Listen to the “hand of Odin” soundtrack then come back and you’ll recognize it.
I do find it a bit weird that the Champion and the leader of Ragnarok are separate in this vision Maybe the prophecy wanted to leave it open to who could fill those roles
Knowing the twist that Tyr is Odin in disguise makes this a multilayered affair. Odin is stricken with genuine surprise and probably terror at the revelation that all along, he was working off a lie. Without breaking the ruse, he is able to play it off as aversion to violence. But it's convincing because it's personal now. But the thing is, Odin fell for one last trap. Everyone looked at the prophecy and saw the leader of the armies of Ragnarok as Tyr. Even Odin. And since he was playing the part of Tyr, he refused to let it come to pass by refusing violence. He thought he was subverting prophecy as he'd done before. But by removing Tyr as an option in everyone's mind, Kratos is forced into the role and Asgard still ends up destroyed and Odin dead. Even when he thought he'd lost, then found a last minute win, Odin was caught in Groa's trap the whole time.
Weird that for as smart as Odin is, he didn't realize that the God of War leading them would be Kratos once he acquired both Gjallerhorn and Draupnir. If he had considered it, he might have taken the Gjallerhorn from Heimdall before sending him to Vanaheim.
That was Laufey doing, she knew groas prophecy and believing tyr to be dead made kratos the champion. As soon as he got the dropnir spear odins fate was sealed not before killing heimdall to get the horn to start ragnarok.
The prophecy and her omission of the truth was all to protect Kratos from Odin. If Odin knew all the details of the prophecy he would've definitely changed his plans and attack Kratos from the start when he's not prepared. But because Odin thought it was Tyr who was the champion, that made him capture Tyr and impersonate him so he would have total control over Ragnarok since he's imposing as the prophecy's champion and be the main steer for it. Kratos is protected because of this misconception and the events surrounding him only molded his resolve to become one.
This right here is probably the scene with the most interesting revelation and hidden emotion. Odin was told the original ragnarok prophecy, where literally everyone dies and their souls are obliterated in the waters of ginnungagap. Only a dozen beings in all the nine realms survive, living on little islands of existence, with no real answers on whether they'll have any chance at survival. So Odin does everything to stop it from coming true. Then, in GoW 2018, Magni and Modi, two people prophesized to survive Ragnarok, die early. Can you imagine what Odin would feel, knowing that he's managed to disrupt the prophecy at the cost of his two grandkids? Then, to learn he never had the real story, and he's still trapped in the story that Groa foretold, but that the real ragnarok will leave most of the realms untouched?
I don’t think Odin cared that Magni and modi died. He straight up said they were useless Hell, he might’ve seen their deaths as the most beneficial thing they ever did as it alerted Odin that something wasn’t right with the prophecy.
@@generalalduin9548i know its an old comment but bruh you missed the entire point. You’re wrong on all counts. Odin was satisfied that they died early, not for any reason other than thinking or ‘knowing’ he had subverted ragnarok, because they are supposed to survive ragnarok so their deaths was seen as confirmation that all of his deeds had been worth it by stopping ragnarok. Only for groa to lie to him and keep the teue prophecy a secret. Genius.
@Slim2Flo if he believed he subverted Ragnarok he wouldn't have gone after Kratos. There's also the fact that Baldyrs death began Ragnarok, so Odin would know its still on and somethings gone wrong with magni and modis deaths
Knowing that Groa can see visions and probably foresaw her death by Odin, and that the next part of the prophecy was only shown when Odin saw this means it was the biggest and final FU from Groa to Odin.
That’s kind of the point of his character. Loki in Norse Mythology basically causes Ragnarok. In this game, his mischief leads to it. Hence why Mimir told Kratos that Atreus “will be everyone’s concern” in the second Helheim chapter in God of War 2018
Ya he basically fucked up Midgard thanks to him imprisoning the Valkyries which caused Helheim to be at full capacity of souls that were meant for Valhalla
I always thought the same thing as god of war 1's prophecy that the god of war will bring down the fall of olympus. Same goes for "Tyr God of war" leads the ragnarok. But in this case tyr is just a stand in for kratos And tyr saying he can't lead the ragnarok is because.. spoilers.. but yeah
is cause odin tried to avert ragnarok by imprisioning tyr which led to the prophecy to still be true (because he tried to change prophecy) by allowing kratos to be the general or champion.
I liked how when show god of war will lead, atreus thinking its was tyr because of the spear, not knowing that the one who lead is the other god of war
There is so much to look at in this scene it's amazing. One thing that I don't see to many people talk about is its literal representation of "bringing prophecies in an effort to avoid them". This is not only a reflection of the story Mimir tells about the witches that tricked the king in his homeland or whatever, but also the story Kratos tells about the oracle helping him take down the god of war to prevent the destruction of Olympus. They really tied in so many moments and threads from not just the reboots but the entire franchise. And they did it all while presenting an incredible allegory about legend/myth/prophecy vs the truth. I love this game so much.
