@Deep Inside I think they hinted to Odin pushing Thor to relapse in the first scene with Odin and Thor. Remember while Odin was drinking the mead, he told Thor your no fun anymore. Yeah. If you are a sociopath who think the victim are solely to blame. I supposed Odin is "right". Arteus is still an accessory to the murder. And it was Odin who push Thor to relapsed and Thrud in danger mission.
I mean, looking at it both ways, Odin is both true and false about these three things, and more ofc. But here: Kratos did kill Heimdall, yes. But only because the latter wanted to kill Atreus. At the same time, it's because of Atreus' constant visits and leaving plus Heimdall's ability to read minds and people's true intentions/feelings that provoked him into thinking of offing him which lead to Kratos killing Heimdall in the first place. In a way, Atreus indirectly killed Heimdall without having a part at all in it beyond just existing. Thrud being at risk of herself because of Atreus is debatle but as Odin puts it, she's old enough to make and deal with her own mistakes. On the other hand, the one time this does happen was putting her with Atreues into one of the worst realms they could have been in which is Helheim. It was certainly risky and dangerous for sure when she saw Atreus free Garm, but Odin DID put her up to being there. Finally, Thor relapsing is a thing he did on his own but Odin certainly went at him enough to do it. Then again, it was still Thor's choice for giving in to drinking again. This one is about as 50/50 as the Thrud problem. Odin's surely the problem with at least 2/3 of these yet he isn't quite "wrong" either from a certain perspective. Doesn't make him any worse than he already is.
All of those things are true, AND Odin is also to blame for all of those things. Responsibility and blame rarely falls on only one person, because most problems are the result of multiple actions, not one alone.
sif is actualy not convincing thor to attack atreus here..shes actually just convincing her husband to turn against his father..but of course thor still cant bring himself to do that so he just shrug it off and vent all of his frustration to atreus instead..just from what he said alone ,"you turn my father against me"clearly shows he still side with his father despite what siff just said to him
Thank you! Finally, someone gets it! Also, she was clearly using Atreus (i.e. modi’s murderer and the son of the god slayer) to convince Thor that Odin didn’t care about them. “If he cared about us, why would he let our sons’ murderer live so close to us?” Something to that effect.
I would believe you, if she wasn’t a second ago telling the Valkyries to take Atreus. Guess you could argue seeing Aesir die one by one spooked her. Also, she didn’t tell Thor to stop as he approached Atreus. Yes she wanted Thor to stand up to Odin, but doubt she cared at the moment if Atreus died in the process. Then again, why would she?
Honestly, I don't think it started that way. She was 100% mad at them, but I think as she started talking she started to realize it was more so Odin's doing than anything. She seemed to realize this once she started talking about her sons.
It's pretty funny, guy has spent thousands of years waiting for a moment like this and the whole thing goes down the shitter in 2 minutes, and then he's dead like the next day
I found that moment forced. There's no way Odin would let his eye of that mask now it's completed. There could have been better ways to deal with this.
@@JH24821 He undersestimated how well he had Thor and Sif under his knuckle and he probably told those Valkyries to keep an eye on her so she wouldn't meddle.
@@Frikcha That's a good point. I kind of expected he would bring Loki and the mask to his home first before attending to other matters but it does look like he was overconfident.

@@rebikhalifa8375 odin controls when the ravens are used/people are teleported. Sif didn't have good timing, Odin summoned her and the 2 valkyries when he wanted them. Yes people have to accept the teleport but odin is the one in control of it happening or not. He's a manipulator, he was probably aiming to get thor worked up to go after kratos while he got atreus to test the mask and see if it killed him.
@@mcdotterson4103Odin can tell his ravens to go on standby kinda - we know this because when Atreus goes back home from Asgard the first time, a raven stays at his old home, and Odin tells him to just let the raven know when he wants to come back. It sounds like you can use the raven whenever you want if you’ve already got access to one and Odin has agreed. He didn’t tell the ravens to bring them. They’d mention if he had. Also Thor really doesn’t need to be wound up to fight Kratos, at least not by Odin. Odin tells Thor to kill things and Thor goes and does it. I don’t think he’d worry about manipulating Thor into killing Kratos, he’d just order him to do it and then berate him until he obeyed. How Thor felt about it could not matter less. The reason he’s not doing it is because if Kratos dies now, Odin is going to have a much harder time getting “Loki” to work alongside his father’s murderer. Loki is the only one Odin doesn’t have absolute control over and he knows if he pushes the kid too hard too fast, he’s not going to get his mask questions answered.
The expression on Sif's face after Odin dismisses her is legit one of the most terrifying expressions in God of War as a franchise. It isn't over the top, bombastic, or screaming emotion. That's "the limit has been reached" expression.
Thor stays loyal to Odin even after its clear he don't care about him basically murders one of his own sons but passes that grudge to Atreus and suddenly his life is all about his kids. The man is as easily manipulated by his wife as he is Odin hell I bet a loud wind could convince this guy to do its bidding.
It's so true tho. Dude is legit actually a hammer that other people swing to solve their problems. He's stuck between an over demanding wife and insane patriarch that expects 100% obedience. You can say sif is only making him loyal to his family, BUT she isn't advocating for protecting thrud, she advocating revenge for their sons (ironic considering they were shit parents) and attacking atreus would incur the wrath of Odin and Kratos. Poor Thor, mans never got to do what he wanted to do.
What makes it especially sad is when Thor says "Gotcha" and "Wasn't about to lose that mask" he doesn't sound _as_ aggressive as he normally does. It's almost like he's finally beginning to realize that Atreus isn't someone out to destroy his family or his home, he's just a kid who's had to make tough choices and sometimes made the wrong one. And then Odin shows up and completely ignores him, and he returns to his hateful mindset because Odin reinforces Thor's idea that Atreus is there to divide them. Then, when Sif tries to talk to Thor and show him what Odin is, Thor directs it at Atreus instead. Odin is such a poisonous figurehead that by just _showing up_ he fundamentally messed with the people around him and their responses.
I just realized Odin's scream of fear when Thor went to kill Atreus was genuine, he couldn't have any idea Sindri gave Atreus an exit. This means either 1 of 2 things. 1. He actually likes Loki, and perhaps see's something in himself in him. This is a possibility as Loki is meant to be the god of Mischief, something Odin seems to make a lot of in GoW. 2. He is deathly afraid of what Kratos would become if Loki were to die.
That wasn't why he screamed. He screamed after he realized Atreus was going to exit. So he screamed because he would lose the mask. Odin might be afraid of Kratos, yes but he knows Kratos is in control for now. He's constantly taunting Kratos but even he doesn't have a full idea of what Kratos can become.
@@vegitoda4738 how could he know Atreus was going to exit though? Sindri gave Atreus the exit right before he left for Asgard, where his ravens, nor he could see.
I think he needs Atreus to look into the rift, either because a Jotunn has better odds of not being blinded, or because only Jotunns can use the mask. He is attuned to the Mask afterall. So he screamed because Thor was about to turn his one way ticket to mush. Also, Atreus is useful, so he wouldn't want to lose him. He looks at people as tools, keep that in mind. Atreus knows how to use Giant magic, unlike Thor, which is a great asset to Odin. Especially his ability to translate almost anything.
He talks in a way to make his words personal to the person he’s speaking with. “Your husband” sounds more personal to Sif than “My son” or “Thor”. I don’t think this is an example of his lack of care for his son, maybe an example of his manipulative way of speaking.
@Nicholas J. Fury Nor does he give a monkey's arse about losing Heimdall. Who may or may not also be his son (it's never explicitly stated if this version is related to them or not).
Also in the final boss fight odin simply says "that ones on you" in reference to thors death by his own hand. He doesnt say "my son's death" or make any sort of statement throughout that entire fight that suggests he saw thor as anything more than a weapon to throw around
1:16 oof, look how the two Valks backpedal as Odin approached. It's always subtle, but you can really get an idea of how horrible Odin is if you just watch him and how people act around him.

1:05 There's a very subtle detail in here that can be easily missed. Notice there's a slight Pause before Odin said "Started drinking on his own again", Odin is lying, and this is also a behavior that manipulators tend to do, they paused, did a quick thinking on how to picture the situation in their favor before laying out the lie. Recall in a previous scene where Thor was frustrated on Odin's decision to bring Atreus to Asgard and Odin ended the conversation with "Honestly I liked you better as a Drunk", which means Odin has a hand on Thor breaking down drinking again.
Not to mention in odins Introduction he put a drink down right in front of thor and then drank it right Infront of him saying "your no fun anymore" another part of his manipulation

And at the end, when Atreus, Thor and Thrüd exit the bar, the two weapons exit in different fashion: Ingrid smoothly sails out and right back into her sheath, no worse for wear. Mjolnir, on the other hand, wobbles in the air for a bit, then crashes to the ground, implying that either it’s just as ‘drunk’ as its wielder, _or…_
Sif: "We use to tell them stories by the fire" And then proceeding to beat the shit out of them the next day, what great couple activity you two have sif.
And how much of that is because of Odin being their grandfather? Also all Aesir are warmongering by their nature and culture. So it was probably like Spartan Society.
I love just how real this whole argument is and how you can see where everyone is coming from. Sif is defaulting to supporting her family. She's not happy that the son of the man who's killed her children and brother-in-law is in Asgard. They know the lengths that he'll go for Atreus and it's not irrational that his very presence puts Thrud in danger. Equally, Odin is right and Atreus had nothing to do with Heimdall's death or Thor's drinking -- he's been drinking since before the start of the game. The writing in this game is fantastic.
@Jaeger19Ultima she knows. one of the overhearing scenes mentions that as much as she loves her sons she knows they screwed up with them and want better for Thrud.
@Jaeger19Ultima Insults are not justifiable cause for death, they're just words, and Atreus overreacted. Notice how Kratos didn't even react to what Modi said about Faye.
@Jaegar19Ultima You want to feel bad for him, but then you remember he's a creep. Before the fight in the first game when they're looking for you Modi says, "remember, I get the boy..." and even Magni is like, "wtf bro." @@MauiWowieOwie He's a creep yeah but, considering his parents I think it's more about feeling more powerful than someone, than anyone really. Strikes me as the one that just gets ordered around but, has very little agency on his own. My grandmother and grandfather are oddly similar to Odin, the mannerisms, the Voice, the Lies etc everything's similar, i found that a little disturbing for me 😅
I cant even blame Thor for his outrage, he is mad because he cannot disobey his father even tho all of it was his father's plan. Before knowing about Heimdall's death, Thor almost treated Atreus like his own son, catching him while he almost fell for the cliff, saying "gotcha" and "wasnt about to lose the mask" are those words from a father where they love someone but they have that little hint of wholesome denial. Thor is the true victim here, he is a destroyer because he does not know what to do nor can he just break it off, his death was harsh and he could have redeemed himself from there but seeing Odin as he was i expected him to do that
I believe the reason Odin abused Thor rather than just manipulating him like everyone else, is because he feared him. Thor is probably the only one that could win in a fight against Odin and Odin is deathly afraid of prophecy’s, including the one of the cycle of children killing their parents. So for Odin it wasn’t enough to keep Thor in line, he had to keep him submissive and a tool. And as long as a tool has a use, Odin will keep it even if it is a danger to everyone around
Oh please, almost nobody especially Thor cared about Heimdall and they only treat his death like that one employee that didn't come out from work that day.
@@frankwest5388 This makes sense. One thing that rang true about what Thor said was that he and Kratos are destroyers, specifically, gods whose divinities are tied to destruction. Everything about their godhood is that they can kill whatever they put their minds to, no matter how invincible or immortal it may seem. If Thor truly wanted Odin dead, he’d be dead, and there wouldn’t be anything anyone could do about it. Odin would’ve obviously known this, so he went well out of his way to keep Thor on his knees.
Sif doesnt know that. In fact, Kratos actively lied to Thor about Modis death, saying that "he died of the wounds you gave him". Even if they suspected that to be a lie, they'd just assume kratos killed him.
@@turbonerdo6838 Dude just check out the third encounter with Modi alone. Modi ran from the first encounter relatively unscathed. Second time, same thing. Third time, he straight up was almost dead and literally said that Thor beat him. Kratos was not lying at all.
Odin is a genius... He could have easily found the mask pieces himself, but by sending Atreus to do it and letting him bond with Thor, he makes him feel like a valued part of the family and helps him feel accomplished in finding the mask and possibly averting Ragnarok. He was giving purpose to Loki so that in the end he would use the mask as planned. After all, Odin knew from the beginning that only Loki himself could use the mask once it was completed.
You couldn’t be more wrong, Odin can’t use the mask and needs Atreus, it has nothing to do with him trying to make Thor feel like part of the family, Odin doesn’t care about anyone but himself and killed Thor without even having to think about it.
@@JustSendMeLocationit wouldn’t be a stretch to think Odin did consider Thors loyalty a little. We know how manipulative he is, he probably thought that this was a way he wouldn’t just get the mask but also Atreuses favor and use it as a test for how strong his hold over Thor was.
@@frankwest5388 bro Odin didn’t do any of it to test Thor lol like are we playing the same game here or what?? it’s cool to have theories but come on the evidence is right in front of you.
How is he a genius? Literally every plan he had failed spectacularly in the game, every single one. And no, he couldn't get the mask pieces himself at all.
Yeah, funny enough, she blames Atreus for all three things and all of those were the individual's choice at the end of the day. Heimdall wouldn't let up, Thrud made her own choices, and Thor started drinking on his own. However, it should mentioned that Odin had an influencing hand in the last one, likely to make Thor easier to control.
Thor truly did love his family. His sons, his daughter, and his wife. He just didn't really know how to truly be a father, because, well, look at *his* father.
Idk why I was in confusion of why the two valkyries pulled up on Kratos at the galactic place with Sutr and legit didn’t realize Odin went to the side to talk to them about that and the fact that he’s disguised as Tyr on their side, he always has tabs and locations on them for that to easily happen, nice touch looking back
I really really love Odin in this game. Obviously I hate him just as much as I love him. But he wasnt some all commanding presence at all, he actually behaved more like a creepy uncle/mob boss of the family. Richard Schiff is truly an amazing actor
Honestly, Heimdall's death is on himself. You can blame Odin for almost everything, but Heimdall's constant "I know better than the All father" attitude is ultimately what fucked up Odin's plans
If you think about it, it’s really Odin’s fault that Heimdall is dead cause he knew kratos was planning to kill him from his time as Tyr and even though he couldn’t blow his cover, he essentially sent heimdall to die by sending him to Vanaheim and as far as I know didn’t even tell Heimdall what was going on.
He either didnt fully believe Kratos's actual power. Or he didnt think Heimdall was stupid enough to pull up on Kratos without backup. I'll give Odin this, he was smart enough to use Thor to test the waters with Kratos first. And also so they could 2v1 him if things got too out of hand. Kratos is easily the best 1v1 combatant in the series. But against 2 gods of enough power he would likely lose. Depending on who they are. Everyone usually is too afraid to fight him and Kratos is generally smart enough to use other forces to seperate them. Odin so far has been the only God smart enough to realize 1v1'ing Kratos is a stupid plan given his reputation. Or they are all too proud. Doesnt matter
The skeletons behind Hrist and Mist and Sif while she pleads her case for Loki to be taken away because of Heimdall's death and then the camera pans towards those swords behind Odin when he explains why Sif is out of line. Odin is fine with all the dead bodies so long as he learns what he needs to learn. He does not care.
The fact that there are people who genuinely think Sif is asking Thor to kill Atreus instead of going against his emotionally abusive father is just funny.

Thor started drinking because Odin said he liked him better drunk. So Thor subconsciously took that as a command. It only took disobeying All-Father once…

sif is actualy not convincing thor to attack atreus here..shes actually just convincing her husband to turn against his father..but of course thor still cant bring himself to do that so he just shrug it off and vent all of his frustration to atreus instead..just from what he said alone ,"you turn my father against me"clearly shows he still side with his father despite what siff just said to him
Thank you! Finally, someone gets it! Also, she was clearly using Atreus (i.e. modi’s murderer and the son of the god slayer) to convince Thor that Odin didn’t care about them. “If he cared about us, why would he let our sons’ murderer live so close to us?” Something to that effect.
No because why else is she blaming Atreus for heimdall death
I would believe you, if she wasn’t a second ago telling the Valkyries to take Atreus. Guess you could argue seeing Aesir die one by one spooked her. Also, she didn’t tell Thor to stop as he approached Atreus. Yes she wanted Thor to stand up to Odin, but doubt she cared at the moment if Atreus died in the process. Then again, why would she?
Honestly, I don't think it started that way. She was 100% mad at them, but I think as she started talking she started to realize it was more so Odin's doing than anything. She seemed to realize this once she started talking about her sons.

@@mcdotterson4103odin can't take people with the ravens without their consent, so sif chose to be there.

Odin only cares about Atreus cause only he can wear the mask
@@vegitoda4738 how could he know Atreus was going to exit though? Sindri gave Atreus the exit right before he left for Asgard, where his ravens, nor he could see.
He screamed because Thor was about to murder the one person alive who can translate the mask that would give him access to infinite knowledge.
Notice Odin said "your husband", and not "my son". Dude doesn't care about Thor at all. . .
He talks in a way to make his words personal to the person he’s speaking with. “Your husband” sounds more personal to Sif than “My son” or “Thor”.
I don’t think this is an example of his lack of care for his son, maybe an example of his manipulative way of speaking.

Also in the final boss fight odin simply says "that ones on you" in reference to thors death by his own hand. He doesnt say "my son's death" or make any sort of statement throughout that entire fight that suggests he saw thor as anything more than a weapon to throw around

There's a very subtle detail in here that can be easily missed.

I love how Ingrid stops Thor pitting itself against mjolnir to later find out it’s Freyr godly weapon it’s backstory and then how Odin took it just to tie it up as a captive essentially and it makes sense why it immediately likes atreus all the small details
You missed earlier during the bar brawl. Ingrid and Mjolnir go at it at one point, zooming all over the place and crashing into each other. And at the end, when Atreus, Thor and Thrüd exit the bar, the two weapons exit in different fashion: Ingrid smoothly sails out and right back into her sheath, no worse for wear.

@Jaegar19UltimaI guess he was trying to be brave in his final moments.
This scene shows how Odin is the perfect manipulator, theres no falsehood in what he says but in how he choose to tell the story lies the trap
No he couldn’t find it on his own cause he’s not able to use the mask 😂
You couldn’t be more wrong, Odin can’t use the mask and needs Atreus, it has nothing to do with him trying to make Thor feel like part of the family, Odin doesn’t care about anyone but himself and killed Thor without even having to think about it.

I feel like the Aesir Gods did have sympathy and good relations with Loki up to this moment, even Sif. She never intended to hurt or kill Loki and it was just that Odin was becoming corrupt but you have to give it to Odin and he does say some actual facts
I’d also like to add that Thor was kind of a Uncle/Brother to Loki and you can tell when Odin comes in Thor walks up like a prideful child just like Loki, they did form some relation up to the reckoning

Thor is such a tragic character. In many ways he’s a mirror image of Kratos. Or rather a potential future of the old Kratos. Being a slave to an overbearing and all-powerful father and a slave to his rage and self-loathing.😢
So true. Kratos never wanted to fight Thor due to reminding of himself of serving the gods, but uses them for their own selfish ways. Also, it’s like Kratos seeing his younger self becoming more angry and vengeful, even bloodthirsty.

Maybe not the video to bring it up, but I find it interesting and cool how Kratos (a man known for how little he speaks) fathered Atreus/Loki (a character who heavily relies on words to get out of sticky situations and who enjoys talking to people).
This was so deep. Good perspective. Thor was once a proud popa of his two young little boys. Just for them to grow up and be killed.
