Always lovely to see an update ❤ we just had an house fire last Monday and I think your channel somewhat prepared me for this because when I saw the damage, I just went “At Least it isn’t as bad as the Chateau” So now I’m rooting even more for you because if you can rebuild all that. I can have a kitchen and dining room rebuilt. Cheers to our never ending little projects. 🎉
Sorry this happened prayers ❤
Sorry to hear about your fire.
So sorry x
Good spirits. Wish you all the best 😊
Sorry to hear you had the fire but at least no other losses, you have a great attitude and hope you get it back just how you want it.
Your joy is infectious! Thank you for lifting our spirits as you prepare to lift us up the invisible staircase…
Can’t wait to see the staircase go up!!
Yes, I advised Dan to get a temp staircase in last summer. It would have meant much faster and safer progress. Now he is finally implementing my suggestion. I think it will make a big difference to progress.
Orange pants man is back!!!
It's a temporary staircase with ramps, he would be better off doing an open plan temporary staircase but it would take twice as long, luckily he is using it and not me!?!
@@TomTomicMic He could build/hire a scaffold staircase. It would be super quick and mean the final staircase is not subject to trashing by taking up heavy materials over the course of the build.
However, Dan is not interested in decent temporary works partly on cost grounds I guess. However, he is making his life awkward in many respects.
@@kathryndunworth4070 It might be Amaury. He called it an old face, which I inferred as being someone we have not seen (on his channel) since the beginning of this restoration.
NOGGINS!!! Stairs!!! Surprise guest!!! Love it all!
Is he planning ahead for where he'll run the hvac ducting?
@@thegravytrain1129 What HVAC ducting? As he has a forest for a garden it will be a biomass boiler and radiators for heating most probably and room air conditioning by wall mounted units, it's very rare to fit a ducted system in Europe!?!
Love a noggin day!
Drink every time he says NOGGINS!
Yea, the excitement builds.
The wood QUALITY still blows my mind EVERY SINGLE TIME I see the lumber he’s using!!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
He didn't get the lumber at Home Depot.
Some things are simply done different across the pond, and building is one of them.
Buildings are usually build to last generations...
"A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit"-Greek Proverb
This is how I work, I want my work to outlast me manifold.
@@thomasw.eggers4303 shout out to brico
I wonder how much comes from his sawmill or from the lumberyard?
Um, well, you really shouldn't use green wood ( not drying after a year or so) to make lumber. It will shrink and get misshapen. I think the outdoor wood is from the property though!😊
So glad you are waiting for help on the more difficult projects.
Glad to see your twin pop in to give you a hand 😂😂
Dan and Stan I call them lol
Have learned a lot from u, dont think at 72 ill ever need it. But this has been one wild ride. Really enjoyed it. Stay safe
You never know 😉
I have watched you try a gang plank before, and it did not work out, this time it would be half as steep, but I will put money on that you will hate it anyway. If you will not make temporary stair treads, rent or buy adjustable steel treads, as used on construction sites, they go on a 50x200mm piece of lumber (each side) and can be assembled in minutes. thank you for the effort to film, edit and post these videos.
Great advice.
He won't take it.
He still won't wear safety specs for some stupid reason.
Tinnitus. He will regret it once the château is built and he wants to sit on a balcony and enjoy the quiet or maybe playing guitar. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Well he's the one who is using it, hopefully he will make an open tread stairs, he has the machinery now to make the job a lot easier but it will take longer than "ramps" (Something that I would avoid, better to have ladders and a better hoist!), but at the end of the day it's his project!?!
Some of us are radiating joy at the prospect of the staircase taking shape.
When Dan lowered the radiator, the strategic ballet move to slide the wheelbarrow away from behind him was EPIC!!!😂
I spontaneously applauded when that radiator actually landed on the dolly, brilliant stuff we’ll done 🎉
Blind power drill to the bathroom wall is a top 10 wildest moment to me, Dan
Up Up and away 👏👏👏👏👏 When you reinstate that tile floor it’s going to be amazing I remember well when it was first uncovered 👍👍
You already have the perfect templates for your staircase treads - all measurements can be taken from the surviving éléments still attached to the walls.
Great to have a helper, especially when it is yourself.. :)
Great an update before bed … ❤
I have seen nice scaffolding stairs on construction sites. They would be quick, give you stairs instead of ramps and could last for as long as needed.
I agree and it would give some place for all the water to go!
Expensive!
Could install them externally so not to be in the way as well!
@@Citronitroifyyou don’t think the timber needed for TEMPORARY stairs is going to be very expensive too? Can hire a scaffolding staircase…..doesn’t have to buy it. An if he did he could easy sell it at the end of the build.
@@MrPaulviles I was just looking at the prices for scaffolding stairs with all the trimmings to buy from new. I would think the price of a temporary staircase from timber depends on the timber quality.
From experience I can attest, that a ramp with cleats can be very slippery, especially when wet or even loose debris on it. Having a 3x3 centimeter cleat every 30 centimeters will help.
"And most important, don't forget to have a strong hand rail at least on one side for safety!"
Noggins, double vision, beautiful tiles and sketchy ramps/stairs. (LOL). It's a good day indeed... 😁
The problem with having nearly 500k subscribers is the inevitable 500k worth of opinions that people feel they need to give. Ignore the noise Dan and keep up the good work
Unless you are totally stupid it is the subscribers that are paying for this project .
Adding a stair case is such a great accomplishment. 😊😊You the man!
Hi Dan
We miss you every day
But then we see the progress
Makes us happy for you! Most entertaining podcast ❤
🐶🐶❤️❤️
I can't wait to see you guys and Nick the brick back together again, plus watching you grow the staircase. 😊🇬🇧
Dan, you must have a first rate planning committee OR you are a genius. The quality of each episode and the introduction of fresh avenues for viewing anticipation is amazing. Please consult spinal experts from now on. Your lower back is a precious thing, and "when she blows she goes". Muscle strength goes too. Your beautiful roof would collapse if the beams lost their integrity. From experience, I know what I am talking about. 😮 Wishing you always the best of British luck.
You've got all the angles for the stairs. Just copy the bits that still exist or the indentation patterns. Yes it's a lot more cutting but I worry the ramp idea will be too steep, after all stairs were invented because 4amps didn't work.
I completely agree ramps not a good idea nad probably be dangerous!
Good morning!
Noggins.
"Build an elevator" is becoming the new "use a drill with the lifter"! 😆
STAIRS! Moving up!!! (or down in your case) Great progress Dan. The more you advance in the chateaux, the more fuel and exciting it gets. Can't wait to see the final project.
2 Dans make the work go smoothly
I may be more excited about the stairs than more roofs!
Can’t wait to see the staircase go up and noggin time is always so satisfying to watch. Also love all that new machinery and new work shop. You have come a long way 🎉
Framing square, stair guides, simple rise and run formula, you'll be an expert after the first one. Remember the roof framing? You've got this!
Besides, the first two flights are simple because the old stringers are still there to be copied 1:1.
Good job finishing the noggins, finding the space for the beam first try, clearing the rubble and removing the radiator! 🎉🎉🎉
Noggins….and now a staircase. So excited for you.
I was just up the stairway to bed …… but now I’ll sit and watch more building adventures …..,🎹😀😀
Dan you don't have to work out all the tread spacings as you have them still in place on whats left of the stair side uprights, just cut new sides and copy the slots where the tread planks slot in.
It's so nice to see you are bringing new life to the old gal, and the chateau is almost keeping up with Kat!
That’s what I was thinking, the treads patterns are right there! Good catch Kat!
Surely the building codes around stair treads would have changed since the chateau was built. Would those original spacings still be legal?
@@SentinalhMCthis is France, most rules can be elastic, mostly enshrined common sense.
@@SentinalhMC I don't know the French building regs but the old stairs look quite reasonable to me, I've seen much steeper ones.
@@SentinalhMC Good question, perhaps they would be "Grandfathered in".
Great update. I now watch each episode twice, the second time counting how many camera positions, excluding hand-held or “old” footage. Today’s count : 42 !
It’s extraordinary. You have got to the stage where you are so quick to get from building point to building point that it is easy to forget how much longer that process took for everything at the beginning Dan. It’s all layering up into a unique skill set. By the time you are finished, you will be at the peak of your skills and knowledge. But it will be finished! Life’s irony. Great content in this episode. Thanks.
Dan: Seeing those existing tiles still in place is a simple thing, but so exciting. Every step is just one more thing to finishing. Carol from California
Bless the noggins. They make the floor, you, and us, all feel the solidity of big bold timbers.
Great…the start of a real staircase 😊
I love these types of channels. They show how building is not as challenging as it is touted to be. Tedious, time consuming and requires a fair whack of tooling - yes. But with some planning and persistence, you can get there if you've the time and funds.
Just love your camera work, having "2 Dan's" working together!
( Wish you'd have gloves on, with that terribly rusty radiator, a cut/ scratch could be DANGEROUS!
Take care, Dan!!
I call that a bombshell of a development and plan! So glad this is finally happening. Great on you, Dan!
1/2 million subscribers soon.
Rebuilding the staircase is monumental!
it's the symbolic spine of the house.
Each step we take represents a moment in time
NOGGINGS YAY🎉🎉🎉
How cool was that, at 5.20, finding the staircase hole first go! Very impressive. ❤❤❤
I stumbled over your Chanel by “accident” a few weeks ago……….and I must say, that I absolutely love it. My entire life, I always felt sad about old beautiful buildings around the world, just left to crumble. I am amazed by your work ethic, and I love watching the huge progress you make all the time. Good job 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌 hugs from Denmark 🇩🇰
There are a bunch of channels where people are doing DIY repairs to old/historical buildings. There are 4 that I get alerts for, but Dan's take priority.
If you want to see one being repaired with the "same" materials and processes, there's a channel where the French government is pitching in on the repairs. It's a historical building from the 18th century named Chateau de Purnon. It wasn't quite in the state that Dan's chateau was in when they bought it, parts of it were open to the elements for a long time. It's huge with a lot of incredible architectural features, kind of like something out of a historical romance.
@@b.w.6535 thank you so much 🙏🏻👌
Noggins here and there and again. I LOVE Noggins.
Those hydraulic tiles are gorgeous!
Encaustic tiles
Hurray, Dan's twin is back. LOL Super excited for the stairs!
Stan is the twin's new name.😂😂
You have become so resourceful with how you do things on your own!!! Love seeing the progress!!!
That’s going to be amazing when you have the stairs up ❤
temp ramp stairs will make things much easier for all of you :) I hope the permanent ones will have old style rails something repurposed or hairpin classic style or brocade would be lovely.
The two Dan's work so well together!!
Can't wait to see somewhat of a staircase! Wow, what progress!
Yeah for Dan the man! Great video today. So excited to see the stairway/ramp kinda thingy get started! See ya! 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
My goodness, it's incredible to finally see you getting beyond the ladder stage. Stairs!!!!
Those tiles are beautiful! See you on Friday. ❤
Morning 😊Wow stairs...already?! not so long ago there was no space for the floors 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Loveva bt of noggins Dan 😂 nice to see that old radiator go and leaving some immaculate tiles ❤ ooh can't wait to see.some stairs go in . Loved watching. See you in a couple of days ❤
this channel is so great for reminding us all that our small house renos are no big deal.
Can’t wait to find out who the “old face” helper is. You are dangling the carrot and it is working. Great clear out for staircase. Thanks for the video. 🙏❤️
Amaury? (There’s woodworking involved)
@@flabreque Ah, I was wondering if the mystery person will be Amaury, too. ( For those who may not know, Amaury is Chateau La Lande's Master Carpenter.)
I presumed upstairs took the worst from the massive fire. I think from watching for so long you did take on the worse of the burn at first. I can see so many more features of the old building in tact. LOVE!!!
Nice weather☀️
I look every evening to see if Dan has posted. I feel so hooked on watching his persistence and endeavour to restore rhe château. He works with an eager and keener attitude constantly. Bravo
Fantastic to see more of the beautiful tiles! Friday is something to look forward to-will the mystery person be Calvin? Or? Good to see Dan revived and smiling and ready to tackle more big projects!
I’m wondering of Amaury is coming to give a hand. I know he has more than enough to keep busy at Lalande but I would love to see them work together again even for one show.
@@sharonlomas3720 I hope it is, and I hope he ends up as a regular on Dan's channel instead.
Your videos help me find motivation to get my own projects a little further along. At this pace I'll finish weeding my flower bed about the time you finish the roof!
🤗😂😂
Even having the landings feels like a big jump forward. Very exciting Dan.
A new step in the “putting stuff back” chapter, even if it’s only temporary. Another step for Dankind!
Very exciting to see the lovely unknocked around tiles. Thanks for sharing this project.
I'm so happy to see Dan again. Life is not the same without seeing your updates, Dan!!! But the important thing is that you are progressing so effectively..and can not wait to see those stairs finish and the walls plastered and clean...but I know the priority is the roof. ❤❤❤❤
Amen Dan. Stairs are about as big a thing as the Roof. We are all very happy for you and excited to see the progress! Howdy from Oregon USA. Loved the opening "Noggins"!
Can't wait for Calvin to return! Onwards and upwards, me hearties! !❤🎉😊
I never cease to marvel at Dan’s enthusiasm and unflagging energy. By the time I have finished one of his vlogs, my back is positively aching in sympathy. And his poor wee hands! I wish he would wear gloves.
Well that radiator was a big one 😮and OMG stairs ❤
I saw an ad on YT for a molding for the cement for the railings. It was cool
I think I’m as excited about the staircase going in as the race to the roofs!!!! Go Dan!
Mama take these beams from me,
I can't use them anymore.
They're getting short, too short to saw,
feels like they're noggings on second floor.
Nog-nog-nogging on second floor!
(yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah)
Nog-nog-nogging on second floor!
It's called "Dan's theme" 😉
LOOK AT YOU! You did it.
Just love seeing the old tiles. They are so beautiful! 😊
God bless moving radiators that’s a job & then some
I was concerned when you made the move on the old cast iron rad.
Those tiles are gorgeous. Another great up date. Looking forward in seeing the staircase going in
I love those tiles, they are a Treasure!
Every day could be noggin day. Should be or could be. Your choice
😂
When you understand the geometry and structure of stairs they are easy, it will help a lot that you still have the shadows of the old ones and in places the stringers, the sides. First part is count the number of risers, verticals and the goings or treads. Next measure accurately the height half landing to landing and landing nose to floor nose then divide the distances by the number of risers and goings. There are stair jigs available for routing the housings.
So apart from the router jig there is a book I highly recommend, George Ellis - Modern Practical Joinery. It will suit the age of the chateau as it was modern 100 years ago but still relevant today and contains a wealth of information about almost every joinery aspect of homes and commercial buildings. I was a construction site manager and often referred to it for help.
Speaking as a qualified engineer (retired) the ramp is probably the daftest idea you have come up with so far. It will be far too steep to be usable or indeed particularly safe! As several others have said, you have a template on the surviving stair sting anyway so no working out is needed. Just match the existing slots. I mean, yeah I know it is fun to try improvising, but really you are so likely to end up doing the job twice, I really would make things easier and cut some proper treads to start with.
Love Two Dan scenes! Fascinates my grandkids
It’s great when your twin comes to help 😂😂
This just keeps getting better!!! 👏😸✌️😻🐾🐾🇱🇷
Looking forward to seeing some stairs go in, even if they are just temporary!,
Nice to see your twin gave you a helping hand today...ans looking forward to seeing Nick back helping on friday!!
Oh wow i just cant wait stairway to heaven coming up 🎉🎉🎉
Dan every day is Christmas cant wait for the next episode
Ah, good ol’ Nick, he went from just helping to sort your trees out, to helping around with everything 😂
"Good morning. Noggins."
For us regulars, this is a totally normal greating 😂
Доброй ночи. У нас в Москве второй час ночи. Поэтому, спокойной вам всем ночи, хороших снов и чистого мирного утра. 😘👏🧚♂️👍
And a good nights sleep to you, friend. I hope the sun shines brightly for you tomorrow.
Have blessed days!
Hope you had a good night rest
Stairs,
Yeah,
Second best idea other than an elevator. 😉
Good idea I've seen those types of temp stairs or ramping, use triangle shape wedges , on a certain angle instead of just a stick or board for step or grip area when walking up , make like a tread but just triangle shape , I hope you follow my thought
Easy,!!!!!!!!!! No problem. Love it.
