    I have a friend that has a scrap metal business in Northern California. He was having to replace the gate hinges every few years because of the weight of the gate and the cheap store bought hinges. He also had a wheel on the other end away from the hinges to take some of the load off the hinges to make them last longer. One day he said there must be a better way. He took a model T Ford front axle and cut it in half and drilled two holes the size of the Ford spindle in the 6 inch diameter steel post the hinges were fastened to and slid the spindles thru the post and put on the spindle nuts. He then bolted the i-beam parts to the gate which has a heavy wood frame with tin sheets nailed to it. A little grease a couple time a year and no problems for over 10 years. The gate has a span of 16 feet and weighs appox 300 pounds.

    You can get the parts at any professional irrigation supply store. The heads are Tora 1 GPM pressure regulated. The line can be purchased at Home Depot for twice the price of the irrigation stores.

    I flirted with the idea of having this type of lifestyle after i got out of the military. The plan was to be a long road trucker after separating. I would have been able to just live in the truck cab, saving everything I made. I know truckers don't make a ton of money, but not having to pay rent, utilities, car payment, ect made it an appealing option. Then after 5 or so years, I'd buy a ranch with cash and try to do something similar to what Wranglerstar does. Instead I went to school on the GI Bill and now I work in a cubicle. I make good money but sometimes I wish I had gone the other route. Working outdoors and having that kind of purpose in life would be nice.

    Seen your Video and made adjustment on a gate after watching your video. Worked really well. Didn't have a welder so I used self driving metal to medal under the bottom of the tube where you won't tear your skin off by grabbing it and pulling it. Works Great. Thanks for the video and I subscribed..

    Move the post? Dig out two posts set in concrete, rebuild corner, posts, braces, mix new concrete, dig holes, Undo wire and re stretch, secure wire to corner, re wrap upper wire and stretch or 1 hour to shorten gate. Are you sure about that?

    Cody, it has been far too long since I visited your channel - my apologies. Nice project - and I agree with you about the power tools. I am sure your aware of this method as well you can take a diffrent peice of tube or solid round stockthat will fit inside the other tube and tac weld it in place and it makes doing the butt end welding less of a hassle its strong and looks almost factory if done right.That being said I like the way you did the tube on the out side to reenforce it and make a strong union. Thank you for all the great info you give us.

    Cordless tools are absolutely needed for farming and ranch. Quality cordless tools last a long time. I have used a cordless sawzall and circular saw for over 20 years. If you buy the cheap ones at the big box store it is true - they will not last long. But the better tools come with long warranties. But if you are on a farm or ranch you do not want to carry a generator, extension cords all over creation to fix stuff.

    nice work but put the bottom hinge pin up and the top pin down. Then that pesky cow can't stick her head under the gate and lift it up. You are correct about tools. The stuff mostly available now use it till it breaks then throw it in the scrap bin.

    I hate to sound like one of those "you-didn't-do-it-right" commenters, but here is a suggestion for the next gate you have to shorten. Make two cuts, and shorten both ends. Then it's symmetrical.
    Of course, it's twice as much work, and you have twice as many places on it that show you messed with it.
    I would've done it just the way you did. Sometimes "good enough" is "good enough". The work is still clean, so it looks good.

  • @wranglerstar
    @wranglerstar  11 лет назад

    I think for most of us we need a machine that can weld up to 1/4" think steel. This being a wire feed or mig welder. I keep a Lincoln stick welder for heavy steel jobs. I would buy only Lincoln or Esab brands. If you need something on the cheap you could consider Hobart.

  • @bigjohn20081983
    @bigjohn20081983 11 лет назад

    I was thinking about this for a spell what do you think about cutting down another gate like you did here and mounting it above this gate with maybe a slight gap in between them depending on how you want to do it this would create kind of a split door where you could walk under the one gate but reach up and open it if you need to drive a truck or piece of equipment in to the orchard.

    If I have 2 10' tube gates that I would like to use for a swing open from the middle style gate, how far apart would my posts need to be, edge to edge? I'm not sure how much to allow for center space, and hinge/hinge bolts on both sides.

  • @lechiengrand
    @lechiengrand 11 лет назад

    Nicely done! In order to make the gate level do you just rotate one of the hinges in or out?

  • @Zigge
    @Zigge 11 лет назад

    So clean it down to bare metal. If it is hot dipped galvanized you can dip it in hydrochloride acid until it stops bubbling and it is clean to weld.
    Continued...
    If you have problems with burn through it helps to make your "saddle" but instead of making an ugly thingy outside crimp it and stuff it on the inside and then weld the gap shut. The inside sleeve will act as a heat sink to prevent burn through also.

    Growing up on a farm and building miles and miles of fence myself I notice you put the hinge bolts on the wrong side, You will have a sagging gate because you do not have a Backup to offset the weight of the gate. Just turn it around and make your hinge post the Strike post and you will have a straight line to back up the weight of the hanging gate. Just thinking out loud. Good idea using the scrap tubing for collars though. Looks good.

    You can have what I call semi-cordless tools. When you buy a cordless tool always buy 12 volts. When the battery dies throw it away and don’t buy a new one (sometimes it’s more expensive than the tool). Connect the tool to an old car battery (frim a junkyard) with 3 meters wires and now you have a semi-cordless tool. You have wires but you don’t need grid. Charge the car battery every once in a while.

  • @bradne1
    @bradne1 10 лет назад

    Instead of doing an exterior sleeve like you did, you may thing about doing the same thing but on the inside of the tube. You probably only need an inch or two of the "waste" tubing. Just take the piece and slice it lengthwise (just like you did). Make sure you take enough out to compress it and insert it in the inside of the tubes. Put your end piece on. Leave about 1/8 gap between the two tube ends. This way you only have half the joints to weld and it will be plenty strong.
