How to Install a Welded Wire Fence the Fast & Easy way with Elevation Changes, No Digging
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 сен 2024
- This is a quick step-by-step tutorial for installing a wire net fence, also called garden wire, garden netting, welded wire, etc. Technically it's not chicken wire but it's similar. This particular fence is 4 feet tall with 4 inch gaps, which meets regulations for fencing in a pool in most municipalities. It also helps keep your dog from chasing critters. The stakes are 5 ft U-posts.
This is just temporary fencing until I can install permanent posts and make it look pretty. My backyard has several elevation changes, so this video also covers how to change the angle to accommodate changes in terrain. This might not be the look you want long-term, but it's functional.

Man this is the truest RUclips comment I’ve ever read
lol no doubt!
That is how you do a video for diy people who want to keep it real. Great job.
I really appreciate the lack of unnecessary valueless talking, thank you for getting right to it and being easy to understand.
Yes!!! I had to subscribe when he spoke of this!🎉
For real! Such a breath of fresh air
Thank you so much. I'm a single mom with a 9 yr old son and I believe we will be able to achieve this, thanks to this video🙌🏼
My partner and I are renters, and we've been searching for an affordable fencing option that our landlord wouldn't give grief over. This is a perfect alternative, a good weekend project. Your video is neat, thorough, and informative. Thanks
Same here!
This is exactly what I needed to see. I bought a hug roll of 6' welded fencing at a garage sale for the low price of $5! I couldn't believe it. I asked if he'd take 5 and he said yes! I Intend to make a chicken run with it. Thanks for putting this video up.
I've never seen a hug roll, but congratulations on the find! 100ft of 4 ft costs around #100.
@@jasonh7726 Hahaha! I also got a very large dog carrier making my entire transaction $20! The guy might have made some interesting choices in his life to warrant such a quick cash grab.
@@stephmartinez701 Isn't yard sales the best? Some are crazy expensive, some are trying to give away everything you didn't know you need!
I really needed this simple instruction. I'm a single lady moving into a disaster. I enjoyed you video because it was simple and I know what tools and products I now need. You saved me money and time, and I subscribed because of it. Any videos on replacing carpet, windows, or repairing holes in walls would be an amazing help to me! Thank you for what you do! I feel encouraged!
Thanks for subscribing. Carpet is tricky cause it needs to be stretched. Windows vary by wall (brick, siding, etc.). They need to be flashed and sealed. There’s a lot that can go wrong if you don’t do it right and get a leak. I am currently dealing with one that I prefer not to do myself because of the risk. These are all a bit more complicated than a fence unfortunately. But I will keep you in mind for future videos. Good luck with your projects
Thank you! I’m building one of these this weekend. I’m prepared now. 😅
Yeah you have budget I still need to save some otherwise i did that too...thanks ,👍❤️
Wonderful. Not the most difficult project, but never having done one before, I knew there were things I should learn first. You answered the questions I had for this project (dealing with corners, clamping to the post, dealing with changes in level). Excellent video. Thank you.
Did you ever put in a gate? I'm about to install one of these and need to include a gate over a walkway. Your video was very helpful!
Your gonna wanna use a wooden post and concretefor a gate. A round tubbing metal cattle with a metal mesh looks and works great with wire fence.
@@kingyart The wooden posts would be a more proper way of doing a gate, but since this is kind of a Mickey Mouse DIY PROJECT! You can actually make a gate without wooden posts and just use the T posts. I cut the fencing on one side where I wanted the gate to open. Then took two 3/4” wooden fence planks and stapled each one to each side of where the fencing is cut at. Then you can add whatever type of latch attached to the wood planks to keep the fence together across the driveway or walkway. Undo your latches and just pull the fencing back out of the way to get into your driveway or yard. It’s the poor man’s way of getting the job done without having to spend much money and not having to waste much time. This is what I did when I wanted my chickens pinned in on my side yard . I put loops on the side where it was next to a T post so the fencing just not flopping in the wind. Then made hooks that mounted to the plank that was connecting to the fencing you want to open. Then just had to raise the fencing a little to drop the hooks into the loops to close up the fencing. Lift the fencing back up to take the hooks out of the loops to open the fencing back up! Very simple and quick and cost very little to do!

I just installed a fence using your video and you couldn't have made it simpler--came out great! Thank you.
May I ask how much you spent? Trying to decide the route I want to go....
@reeree5259 how much land are you trying to fence?
As usual, I started my fence project without doing much research and made a bunch of mistakes. I like your video because you gave solutions to problems I hadn't encountered (yet). Thanks for creating this!
Thank you! This is exactly what I needed. The Home Depot welded fence description suggests u poles but the t poles are 20% cheaper! And I didn’t know about post driver before - thanks, i’d smash it with sledgehammer if I didn’t watch your video.
Thanks for making this a simple install, straight to the point, I'm fencing this wkend.
My gosh that ground is soft.
Right I need a sledgehammer 😂
I'm enclosing my small garden to keep my chickens from eating &/or digging everything up. Can I use hardware cloth that I have that was leftover from enclosing the chicken run?
Thank you for an excellent video ! I put up my welded wire fence after watching this and it was a great success 👍
Hi Blake, you helped me and hubby save my guinea pigs in their outdoor oasis.Eternally thankful!
I have 5 puppies when full grown they'll be 65-75 pounds and they are jumpers. I want to do a 6 foot high fence like this. I'm thinking of doing the T-post 2 foot or 3 foot apart for added strength. What are your thoughts on this?
First time I’ve seen someone use those clamps correctly. Nice job!
This was great, very practical, straight to the point, and it has hopefully let me avoid a few mistakes which I would likely have made. Good video!
This has been super helpful! I’ve referenced this video several times while deciding how to fence in my yard for the dogs. Picking up all the materials tomorrow.
How's your fence go?
Thank you for making the best instructional video I’ve seen in a while! Straight to the point, and actually helpful! Thank you thank you
If it can’t hold back zombies then why should I get this fence🤷🏽♂️
Nice video. Thanks for the clamps tip! Small clarification: looks like you used U posts, not T posts.
I thought so too. Those look like U posts.
Thanks for the video. We're going to be putting up 100' of 5' welded wire next weekend. I've got a team of healthy and strong young people who will be pounding the posts into this rocky hard ground, but it's up to me to figure out the best way to handle slopes, bends around a couple of trees, etc. Your video was a good starting point.
I've been thinking about doing this to fence in my yard for my dog and kids and this video is exactly what I needed! Thanks! Now I just need a video about making a gate lol

1:18 "dont do this.. (...) i can't even hit it"
well that's embarassing
of course i won't do THAT, i know how to use that tool
This is the best instructional video I have ever seen. You made it look so easy! Right to the point, gave quick solutions to specific issues without jumbling up the video. I am now confident that I can do this project alone. Just for giggles I’m not going to tell my husband how I knew how to do it until after!
This is simple but amazing video. No gimicks all info. Thanks man! Tackling this today.
Great video. Exactly what I was looking for. A gate video would be great to see how you built that.
Working on it. Hopefully this summer.
@@BuildingWithBlake just curious how tall that chicken wire is that you put on that split rail. Thinking about doing something like that to try and get away with a taller fence lol
@@dakota481 It's all 4 ft tall. There's def some wave on the split rail portion, but the dog doesn't mind.
Definitely a helpful video. Really appreciate the closeups of connecting the adjusted slope wires, and the tip about bending towards the welding points. Also the video was pretty satisfying to watch, even if I wasn’t trying to build a welded wire fence. Narration about what you were doing was on point 👌
I think you did a great job with these fence instructions! I'm a single female and attempting to build a 100ft fence for my dog and this just gave me everything I need including the confidence to tackle it! Ill be coming back for the gate.. Thank you! (FYI every store I've been to or online refers to these as T Posts) Always has to be a jerk somewhere to throw negatively.
I’m getting ready to build my own 100 foot fence too by myself.
75 ft here
Same here 😊
Anyone have a price total for this project?
@@reeree5259 at your nearest Tractor Supply you can catch a sale where the 4ft tall and 100ft long will be $98
Thank you!! You have no idea how much you just helped me!!
This is exactly what I needed. I need to put up a cheap fence around my garden and this is something I can do. Thanks for the info! I love getting to the meat 🍖 and potatoes 🥔 of the video up front.
Just what I needed. I’m buying a house but need a temporary quick solution for my dogs to have a place to run. This works. Thx
I used zip ties for my fence 3yrs ago and each year some do break and I just put new ones on in those spots. I made gates from a pieces of hog panel, leaving the pieces of wire on one side to bend around the T post like hinges with the gate being wider than the opening so it braced on the other side by the fence and I used a bungee or chain to keep it closed. I did need to put welded wire on it so the small dogs could not go through the holes. It works pretty good once you tweek the bent wire to move on the post easy and you can make a wide gate just as easy as a narrow one. The only downside is it does not move as freely as a real hinged gate but it is functional.
That’s a good stopgap. I would think eventually the wire will break?? I’m hoping to do a hinged gate this summer. Always learning something new.
those are u-posts and not t-posts
We are installing our t-post fence this weekend and this video is very helpful! Could you tell me what gauge fencing you used? Thank you so much!
There's a company called LockJawz that makes a great wire clip for T-posts (not the garden posts you used). Easy enough to install that my 9 year old nephew was able to help us put in fencing for our chicken runs.
Thank you soooooo much for this info! As a soon to be old woman, I need all the ease I can get when working around my place! I will be using these clips for my next fencing project!
great, to the point, complete. A natural teacher, fantastic.
I certainly hope it is as easy you make it look!! Thank you for such excellent instructions!!
Sadly, this makes me sit through 2 full minutes of commercials to watch it. Then it does it again.
Thank you! We're renters who are moving into a place with a yard that's only partially fenced. The landlord said we could put up a temporary fence for our dogs. I helped my mom install a fence like this as a teen, but didn't feel confident to just dive right in. Your video is perfect
After a $15k quote for a wire fence here I am. Definitely doing this. Materials should be under $1k.
Dude you just saved me $3000. ❤ thank you!!!
Great video with excellent tips! It's not exactly what I was searching for, but it certainly points me in the right direction. I live in a tiny northern AZ town, and we've got plenty of elk, javelina, and other wild critters. My goal is to keep my dog inside rather than having him on a long leash when we're outdoors. He's got a knack for chasing after anything that moves. My house sits on a hill, and the yard is quite sloped and uneven. Your advice on how to angle a fence like this will be a huge help. I'm looking forward to a video on how to build a gate; I'll check if you've made one already. Thanks again for the awesome video!
Dude, thank you so much for a easy way to fence in my dog.
thanks for leaving the chit chat till the end. as long as you get to it i’ll always stick around for final thoughts. new sub here
Thank you. I'm going to use this to fence off the front of my yard near the road and add sugar cane or bamboo real close to the fence to create a natural hedge also.
I'll be doing it myself. I can't stretch wire,so....lol.
Great tutorial.
Super helpful to someone getting ready to install this fence to keep my dog from wandering my neighborhood. Great tips and advice. Thank you.
4ft wire on 5ft posts? The MFGs recommend all T posts be sunk 24" min.
So you should be using a 6 1/2ft post sunk 24" leaving 54" above ground.
48" for wire & 6" reflector above the wire.
Your Welcome.
!
Thank you - I watched a lot of fencing videos that were way too complicated. This was easy to understand and not intimidating to do by myself for my guinea fowls and dog :)
Nice video, however, those are U-posts, not T-posts as you state. T-posts are way heavier and stronger.
This was really helpful, thank you. I'm curious how the posts are holding up if dogs are pushing on it and I also wondered if you had a take on woven wire (sheep or deer fencing) for keeping big dogs in the yard. I was told fence posts should be 1/3 under ground for longevity but I don't see many people doing that with t or y posts.
The dogs typically don’t make contact with the fence. I’ve had a couple deer try to jump it and make contact. They dented the fence but didn’t push it over. To keep deer out of a yard I would go another foot higher and a foot deeper so at least a 6 foot stake or T post as opposed to these garden posts. Woven wire would probably be stronger but either should be sufficient.
You should include links to the needed parts at a big box store, if available.
They make various "Post Fastener" fence wire twisting tools if you have to bend a lot of them.
It"s good to keep the wire ends away from the animal side of the fence or tuck them completely away or you might have to take a trip to the vets!!
This video was EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thank you for your time!!!
Happy I came across your videos. I’ve been debating on how to divide our yard so our dog can be out in the yard when we have guests in our studio apt. Between this fence and your 2X2 gate video I initially watched I think I now have a great solution. Thanks very much!
Is this fence stackable? (Possibly above 6’?) Also thank you so much for the solution!
Very helpful. Thanks for the instructions!!
A few decades ago I put a field wire fence around my property. After completing the job all my neighbors laughed at me. Here I thought I did a great job but the fence sagged in a few areas. What they told me to do is on the corners sink three peeler cores, attach the ene of the fence to one, unroll the entire fence and pull it tight with my truck. Then attach it to each t-post afterwards. I plan to buy more property soon and will use this tightening method. Then three feet away from the fence I'm going to plant cherry laurel hedges because they'll grow 6' wide by 20' high. Planting them three feet away from the fence will allow them to fill in the gap without growing onto my neighbors land.
I have been searching for a good installation video for welded wire for a few years. This is the BEST by far! Thank you so much for posting. I'm subscribed and I hope you do more instructional videos, but I'm sure I'll enjoy your other videos as well. Love your style.
This was super helpful. I appreciate the normal person vibe of this.
Based AF. About to install the mesh on my garden fence.
❤Thanks and Subscribed, Kia Ora from Melbourne 😊
LOL - You have not met my 110lb Golden retrievers.
Charlie - the Box Truck Golden - has not met a fence he cannot defeat.
I just wove in another section of fence yesterday, after he chewed and opened an 18' hole so he and his brother could slip out to investigate the rest of the yard.
Hi Blake, thank you for your video. What do you think of installing a 6 ft fence using 6 foot posts? Obviously the posts will not reach to the top. This is to keep deer from browsing on my Mom's tomato and bean plants.
THANK YOU for keeping this super simple and detailed and well done quickly for me being able to understand and telling what those items are !!!!! Other RUclipsrs just assume people know what it is … I never done any home improvement I’m scared a bit but didn’t know where to start. I will be trying to do this with my sister as I need to make a fence asap. Thank you again !

super clear video! how sturdy is this fence? can it withstand animals leaning on it like sheep and goats? Will it last 5- 10 years? really want to do these instead of wooden posts lol
Thanks for the video! The variations in terrain and tools for beginner level is extremely helpful
I'm laughing in torpedo level over here. They make $10 2ft plastic levels now fyi
Just a quick clarification: “plumb” is a vertical characteristic as in using a “plumb bob” to establish a true vertical for a corner or post..
“Level” is found with either water or oil mounted in a vial which allows the user to center an air bubble between two marked lines.
Crude and ancient but effective.
Thank you! You mentioned you had ideas for a gate. Have you posted a gate video yet? I’m not super handy, but I could pull this off…so if you have gate ideas, I’d be curious.

This is great
Struggling with costs of dog fence You have made life easy
What was your total cost for tools and materials for 300’ job. Same as mine… or would you like to come do mine .. in Maine 😂
I have a question please: My dad & I planted trees around the perimeter of his 2 acre property. The trees are almost 40 yrs old now. I would like to use the trees as the "posts" for this type of fencing (to keep our dog in and try to keep it looking as natural as possible). Can i use those u-shaped clips you used on your split rail fence, on the trees?
I can't believe you started cutting up your fence and patching it back together. Here's another method that works a lot better without destroying the integrity of your fence: ruclips.net/user/shortsx_rh9Dhc_SQ?feature=shared
Thanks Blake. Keep it going. You are doing just fine. I am dealing with welded wire now as well. Cheers from Canada!💯🇨🇦🍁 P.S. Enjoy the short bloopers as well. Your sense of humour is appreciated.💪🙏
Thank you!
Thank you for this video!! Best fence video I've watched yet.
This is all wrong post are supposed minimum of 2 ft in the ground. The wire should be stretched tight, and the wire should be crimped to compensate for any landslope.
Really enjoyed watching this video. Great job explaining things in detail 👏
Excellent video. I just wish you had mentioned what the total cost for the project was.
Thanks, I does keep the zombies out of my yard.
Best video I’ve seen on installing T posts using T-post connectors. You showed the process up close . I also loved how you explained the wave at top or bottom of fenced and how to correct. Nothing difficult. Keeping it a simple to understand installation. 👍🏼
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching! Also they are technically U posts as several people have pointed out.
Don't expect a fence like this to last long or to stop any livestock. For that it needs to be properly tensioned, with heavy strainer posts at ends and corners, and the strainers need to be strutted or guyed - the strength of a wire fence is in the tension. You also need some way of stretching the wire really tight- there are simple tools for that. Your fence as it is would be OK though for small dogs, very small children or as a simple visual deterrent.
I would highly recommend looking at other videos on how to do this to make sure you have a decent understanding of how difficult this can be in less than ideal circumstances.
Just buy a Tpost driver and return it when you’re done. #LifeHack
True story if you don't swing a sledge regularly for work leave it alone but you can definitely get these in without buying a post pounder, you can also weld one up easily if you have some pipe laying around
I inherited my t post driver from my dad. It must weigh 30 lbs.
there are lighter ones for driving stakes. That was probably for full posts.
Excellent instructional video. Look forward to the gate!!

Thank you for the video. Used many of your recommendations. The welded wire fence was the way to go versus chicken wire. I agree with unrolling the fence, I didn't like that part. Thanks for all the tips made the project go smooth.
Nice that your ground is very soft with no rocks. Not realistic in my area.
