  • ASUS TUF Gaming FX504 / FX80GE review after 3 weeks use. It severely underperforms with a forced 25W TDP and 2.2Ghz turbo limit when it power limits/throttles around 70 degrees C. One to avoid! Buy another model with proper cooling, the Core i7 8750H is one hot CPU!

    This is a good, unbiased review! I suspected the specs-to-pricing too good to be true - so they skimped on the HSF cooling, and the limited IO ports are just sad... I went with the Acer AN515-52-78AS instead.

      @Amy Santti My FX504 model has
      i7 8750H, gtx 1060 , 120 HZ and intel wifi version
      cons:
      - I cant install more nvme SSD(has one 1 nvme slot with 1 sata)
      - less I/O ports
      - Loud because of very poor thermal performances(I keep mine at "overboost" all the time)
      - sometimes body gets oily and looks kinda ugly due to random smudges
      pros:
      -one of the best trackpad in the market
      -a really good screen, mine is (120Hz variant)
      -nice keyboard travel (but not the best feel/softer and satisfying like other ROG products)
      - can immediately turn down fun noise using fn+ F5 (in a couple of seconds you can go from "overboost" to "silent")
      - cannot really feel the crazy temps while gaming(using laptop's Keyboards)
      - REALLY GOOD SOUND CARD , I CAN USE DTS HEADPHONES Equalizer + REALTEK AUDIO Equalizer TOGETHER => MIND BLOWN FROM THE BASS AND FREQUENCY RESPONSE
      :)
      Very Important NOTE:
      Please, buy laptop according to your region.
      I live in India, and here we have very limited models with 120 Hz and gtx 1060 around 1300-1500USD rest are above 1800or 2000USD. (my laptop cost: USD1,377)

    Saw this laptop on sale for $73o and was thinking about picking it up and doing some upgrades. I feel like the complaints about the SSD, WiFi, and battery are non-issues. Those pieces can be upgraded or for energy you can simply plug into an outlet. Not having high end 4K support with higher Refresh isn't a big deal either, it's not a common thing in computing and 1080p is still holding strong as the standard. But it does seem like the overheating and cooling is a major issue with this model. Also personally I do not mind a loud fan, especially if I have a headset plugged in I probably wouldn't hear it even if the fan is blowing hard on max. But throttling is a big "no-no", and consumers / end users should not be expected to play around with voltages / undervolt their hardware. Thanks for checking it out and doing some investigative work. I appreciate your honest review.

    I bought one of these that has the i5 8300 H, 8 gb ram, and a gtx 1050 with 2 gigs vram. Has a 1 tb hdd, and i love everything about it. It's the perfect gaming laptop for a beginner. I have no cooling issues when using overboost mode, and I am not bothered at all with the sound it makes. Although there may be a better laptop for around the same price, I got it for $300 off ($800 cdn). My only issues are there is no usbc port (minor), no displayport (minor), and no disk drive (very minor). Very good for the price I got it at!

    This laptop took 2:51 for 1min 4k youtube render while 7700hq took 3:09 and 7300hq 3:51 so currently 8750H > 7700HQ > 7300HQ > 8550u/8250u correct me if i am wrong. I also want to know that is 8300H is worth upgrading from 7300HQ for gaming. And also was the 8750H undervolted while 4k 1 min encoding?

    • @Techtablets
      @Techtablets  5 лет назад +2

      It wasn't much faster than the 7300HQ that got around 3:00 on the Legion R720 I reviewed, but Adobe now uses hardware acceleration. So I had to test software only. If it's hard all CPU's are now about 2-3x faster at encoding. That time was without an undervolt but I thnink on other systems with better cooling it will be even lower. I don't think going to 8300H is worth it for gaming. 8300H is basiclly like a 7700HQ. But for video editing and other more taxing work it's then worth it. For my 4k video edits which can be up to 60 clips the up to 8750H is noticable, but not in gaming.

    • @KaranSingh-uy3qp
      @KaranSingh-uy3qp 5 лет назад +1

      Thanks, you work very hard to obtain these stats for us.
      I was asking these questions because i purchased acer helios 300 with 7300hq and after 2 month model with 8300H launched , so my mind was thinking a lot about performance difference. Also there was no one comparing 8250u/8550u with 7300hq. Again thanks

    • @sahasarya4408
      @sahasarya4408 5 лет назад +2

      8300H = 7700hq in terms of cores and threads but 8300H performs a little bit better because of clock speed differences and more cache memory. For a layman, they are exactly the same

    • @alexclarke6924
      @alexclarke6924 5 лет назад +1

      @@sahasarya4408 Nope, not even close. The 8300h is miles ahead of the 7700hq in a properly-cooled laptop. Extra 0.5ghz turbo all core and extra 2mb cache is a huge boost.

    Thanks for the video, I had my eye on this model until I saw your video. Do you think the i5-8300H paired with a 1060 6gb will have the same overheating problem?
    The heating problem is really scary but there are not many other computers below 1k with a 1060 6gb and last gen cpu avaliable :\
    The model also comes with a HDMI 2.0 and Intel 802.11ac Wave 2 wireless, wich corrects 2 of the negative points.
    Also mainly for gaming and light work (office) do you think the stretch of 100$+ is worth from an i5-8300H to i7-8750H?
    Once again, thanks for the eye opener!

    • @Techtablets
      @Techtablets  5 лет назад +2

      You might be okay I think on the 8300H model, it's a cooler chip. But then again 1060 is hotter too. The stretch from 8300H to 8750H isn't worth it for gaming and light work, but for heavy work such as video editing, 3D design etc it is.

    After undervolting, the temperatures was around 75-80°c while playing farcry 5 at high settings, I'm quite satisfied with this , and noisy fans are not really a problem when you play games cuz you add headphones, about sound , use the dts app which is pre installed in the laptop, it makes it louder enough that you can play games without headphones and they cover up FAN NOISE

    • @Techtablets
      @Techtablets  5 лет назад +3

      You're not crazy, it limits itself to 25W TDP instead of 45W capping it to 2.2Ghz on all cores only, instead of 3.6ghz. But if you cycles the fan modes it will jump back to 45W for a few minutes. Yes, we aren't getting the performance we paid for, but I see some owners in here calling me a hater because they don't want to hear it!......... Thanks for the comment. Also, by the way, do you lose battery life when off and not in use? I lost all the battey over the weekend when it was unplugged and off. never seen that!

      I've been having this discussion with at least a dozen of people, owners and potential buyers alike, and some refuse to believe. So long there are a few get it is worthy, but, now I understand why ASUS went this way, because they knew they will have an audience no matter what, those who couldn't care less if they get the performance they payed for. I wouldn't doubt ASUS will keep doing this, what worries me is if this becomes common trend among manufacturers, let's hope it's not.
      Regarding the battery, the most time my computer was off was about 10 hours, it was fully charged before turning it off. During that time it lost about 2%, but there was one time it lost 25% or more, couldn't determine what caused it and really didn't worry that much about it. Guess it is one more compromise this PC has.

    • @Techtablets
      @Techtablets  5 лет назад +2

      @@AlainMichelReyesSotter The trouble is most games don't stress that CPU enough for people to even notice it's limited. I hope it's not becoming common place but it looks as if the new model the FX505 is exactly the same, ASUS force fan boost for good performance other wise it throttles on balanced mode. Shame really as my Strix i7 7700hq laptop was good which is why I bought this one.

      Right, and even with that bottle neck most games will go beyond the 60 FPS which makes it even harder to detect. Just saw the fx505 and I can’t believe they have changed/replaced/updated/sell alongside a new computer in less than 6 month but didn’t address the thermal limitation. Guess the only Asus models one can get are the ROG

      @lemuelbuenviaje1996 5 лет назад +1

      that 25W limit won't go away, even with Throttlestop tinkering, and it just annoys me so much on why they would do this, when this laptop is perfectly capable of handling the load. Hell, my temps never go above 75 ddegrees at high performance with 3.8 ghz constant processor clocking, its just that the stuttering and framerate drops drive me crazy, because I paid for a laptop that can really hold its own with at least 2016-2017 games on high settings, or atleast its supposed to be on paper.

    What a review.. A gamer will always use headphones. Don't worry about the fan noise. I never got annoyed 😂. The temperature at the right hand side of the key board is high, but left side is cool. A gamer knows which hand side of the keyboard is mostly used. Display is too bright sometimes, but there are so many third party softwares to adjust it. Many games run more than 60 fps. On holidays it can be played for long hours. What else do we need. It's a loving laptop.

    Wandering about the slot SSD, is it a M2-PCI or NVMe-M2. Want to buy a SSD. What SSDs fit in that slot?

      NVME(protocol/rules on a road) uses PCIE(interface/the real road). NVME SSD are PCIe SSD

    I've had this laptop for over a year, and yes, it is loud as f*** when you're playing videogames, but it is expected to be loud as the card is working on max power, I don't mind that since I'm using my headphones or headset while gaming, you can always set the fan mode on "silence" if you're using the laptop for other than gaming, besides that I have no issue with this laptop, for the price I paid for it, it has been a pretty decent product.

      @@gone7969 Yes, I installed additional 8GB for a total of 16GB, I also replaced the M.2 disk that came with the laptop by a samsung 128GB NVMe for the SO and installed an additional 1TB Sata SSD.
