Made one of these for myself and my sister LOVED it, made one for her and now 3 people at her job want one! Instructions were easy to follow on this video! Thank you!
As always, you explain everything so clearly. I must have tried to make 5 of these-- and ripped them out, assuming I was mistaken. Why? Because the directions were so unclear and unnecessarily confusing (I wrote to the company that published the original pattern and told them what I thought of their directions. I felt they were unnecessarily difficult and badly explained.) Finally, I sorted it out (I was really determined) and have managed to make two, though not with this pattern, and am about to begin a third. I love them! They are warm and comfortable. I think of them as a modern-day shawl. You can actually use almost any type of stitch. It's basically a rectangle and, as you demonstrate, folded in half, lengthwise, then sown up about half way to form the arm holes. It's very simple. Also, by adjusting the size, you can make it shorter, like a Bolero jacket, or longer. There are so many variations and they're all brilliant! But, most of all, understanding the concept is essential-- and you explain it beautifully. As usual. ;)
Marige OBrien I totally agree I went to read the pattern an it was so confusing I was going to give up cause I have slow WiFi on my phone but I stuck it threw the tutorial an i always love how he teaches very easy to make an he tell you how to make it even if you don't know how to crochet very well (I really agree that you should let them know how bad there instructions are )
Hi from S Africa. Just came across ur video n I love the easy way you explained how to make this lovely crochet shrug. I am currently crocheting a large granny square, initially thought I was going to make a blanket out of it but now decided to turn it into a shrug since it’s not too large as yet. Thank you. 🙏
Loved working this style of granny stitch and finished my shrug just recently. Hoping to wear it often around the campfire while camping this season. May need to make another and use up stash yarns! Thanks for the excellent tutorial.
thank you sooooooo much for sharing this. ive been trying to figure out the geometry of this thing ever since I saw a gray one on facebook. finally had the light bulb moment!!!!! THANKS!
love it..!! I will do it but with another yarn because we do not have this yarn (caron cakes) here in Brazil but I will find one similar to it. Thank you very much for your tutorials, always very well explanained. Regards from Sue ( Brazil).
I am going to make this for my toddler. I wonder if one Caron baby cake would be enough. I am going to make her 4 of these in different colors. Sweet roll bubble pop, Caron baby cakes in mint and one in Violet, and one in frosted pansies. She is going to look so cute ❤

I have been looking for a easy Shrug pattern to make with the Caron cake yarn. The Modern Granny Square stitch looks like the perfect one. Thank you Mikey for being such a good instructor. 😊👍
Thank you for the video! The link in the comments brings you to a mock cable hat pattern though. I was trying to get to the written pattern to find out how much yarn is needed. Thank you!
Looking at the written pattern, I notice it says after the 6th round to do work a stitch into the spaces between the double crochets, and also that the last round is different as well. I am AWFUL at reading patterns. Where can I find this? I have now done my whole square and just realized the written pattern is different from round 6 on…. And that the last round is different. Please help!
Can I adapt any Granny Square pattern into a Shrug similar to this? I have a few extra 12" Granny Squares that start with a flower motif in the center. I would like to continue the basic stitches you show here with one of them to make a shrug.. Just wondering if there is such a difference that it may off center in the process. I wish I could ad a pic to this feed. Hope my question makes sense. Still new to larger projects. Just trying to go outside the box,so to speak.
Here's what I'm thinking buy at least four caron cakes to begin with I'm a plus size, I'm thinking to continue crocheting the square until I think it might fit, I could fold it the way Mikey has here in the demonstration place pins or markers where fit to sleeeve and go from there. I don't know, does that make sense to anyone.
No, it's not the same type of yarn. Caron Cakes have 20% wool which makes the strands thicker. There is a lot more yardage on a Caron Cake as well. The wool inside the product makes it much softer than just 100% acrylic that is used in Sweet Roll.
Hi Mikey how many Caron cakes do I need to make this shrug? I am sorry if I missed it if u did mentioned it on the beginning of the video. Love ur tutorials. I learned a lot from seeing ur tutorials.
My reply is a year late but here goes. This is from the old The Crochet Crowd site, before Mikey was on yarnspirations. You can still find it. The free modern granny ebook has this pattern in it and you can get it here: thecrochetcrowd.com/crochet-mg-modern-granny-patterns-ebook-jeanne-steinhilber/
Hi Mikey will I be able to add a hood on this shrug? Love ur tutorials. I learned a lot from u. I learned to crochet by seeing ur tutorials thank u so much. Ur an awesome teacher.
I really want to follow these videos but I get frustrated and mess it up. I have created other projects and tutorial by other vloggers and do not have a pro blemishes. I love your projects but I can't get it right.

I love how you explain everything! May you always be online to make crocheting as easy as can be! Love and hugs !
I'm imagining Mikey teaching math! Students would be riveted and interested in learning. Excellent instruction methods and attitude!

Is it possible to maybe use a bigger hook, like a K to make it not as thick or heavy? Something you can wear in spring and summer...
try using a lighter weight yarn---- sport yarn is nice .... or even baby weight.....and a size H hook.... mine turned out great !

Hi. I can't find a written pattern. If I click on the written pattern it doesn't giving me any. Please help.
We have a website down issue at the moment. It's not you, it's us. I'm sorry.
What would the measurement be for a child? Ages 12 for example Or would the extra small be ok without the child swimming in it?
Thx in advance
love this
Hey guys are the sweet rolls as soft as the caron cakes, JoAnn's has sweet rolls for $3.99 each, regular $5.99 each not bad. Im in WDC

I don't have a partner in crochet that has a free pattern available that I can legally use. I'm sorry.
The Crochet Crowd okay, thanks for getting back so quickly. bless you
Mikey, will this fit an xxl, do you or anyone know please
Yes it should. The model size is too big for the girl wearing it. We realized it was meant for XXL.
I went on to yarnspirations and I can not find the printable pattern for this tutorial. Has it been removed.

Yeah I think you could wing something to make a hood. Try it.
why do all my granny squares look misshapen and not flat
Margaret Seabrook if u turn every round it dont look misshaped...idk if that will work with this style of granny
With this style of granny I think it will muck up the color pattern. Thank you for the tip, I'll do that for the next shrug
