  • Can you tell the difference between photos taken with the Sony A7III and the Fujifilm X-T3? This NOT going to be a comparison of images with the same composition, same lens, same exposure settings -- that would easy and obvious. Instead, it WILL be a collection of "guess which camera took this photo" from real-world wedding photography situations. All Sony photos taken by Joseph of J&A Light, also a SF Bay Area wedding photographer. All photos were edited using my Lightroom preset to closely match the Fuji and Sony files in color and tone. Yes, my presets work on Sony files too!

    Over many years, I have used film, slide film, big DSLRs Fuji and lenses from cheap to extremely expensive. I eventually smartened up and learned that my best photos were not based on camera or lens or sensor or film. They were based on lighting, composition and the moment. Many of the photos with thin depth of field were slightly out of focus also. I no longer worry about the gear as it is all very good.

      Do you do a lot of post-processing too? I've noticed a few subtle touchups in contrast/color/gamma/etc. can do wonders on a photo with a cheap body and decent lens... depending if the light and composition were good to start with.

    The most important lesson an up and coming photographer might learn is that If this blind test would be presented to a client, the brands would not matter and they wouldn’t care. They just want to capture their biggest moments and hopefully it flatters their own insecurities and that you were professional enough to make them feel comfortable in front of whatever lens you use

    Missed about 20% of the shots. But I nailed almost every Fuji shot. There is something slightly different the way the shot are rendered. Probably because the x-trans sensor gets more from mid tones than Bayer sensors? Not sure. Still Both are great cameras and more than Fuji vs sony this is a apsc vs full frame :)

    Although I bought xt3 for its color, I couldn’t get it right on some photos. Fuji has vintage-like vivid color but not in every photo. And especially in black and white I couldn’t tell. But once you see all of the photos together, the difference will be noticed. That’s why you pick certain brand for their own characteristic. You might be able to edit to look like each other but, that’d be a lot of work.

    Kind of pointless. All photos were edited with some "preset". It would make a sense to compare SOOC pictures only, because in case of using "preset" it is like "look here, they all look very same, they all look very good. No big difference". I mean, c'mon... I can use your "preset" to make same-looking pictures on the old Nikon D200 which is just a toy in a modern camera world... But it will be pointless. As the point of comparing is finding out "the best" in some categories.

    This post is total bull; dah processed images are made to a look. Yea great so you can deliver consistent product to your client. Want to attempt a comparison of image quality post the out of camera files. That said, I own Sony, Nikon, Canon, Fujifilm, Olympus and LUMIX . I will say this the “look” in digital images is more dependent upon the software process of the files then upon the hardware that capture them. That said all these camera systems have strengths and weakness in producing the captured files and these captured files if properly exposed will lead to similar looking photos once processed in the same software. CaptureOne, Lightroom can and do show difference in the look of their edited files. If your image library includes files made by any number of different camera systems over the last 15 years and you were to reprocess them in the latest version of these programs, you’d be amazed at how different the results you’d achieve because of all the new technology that have been made in the post production software. I’ve been doing photography for almost 60 years and have developed the realization that the camera system is the least important link in producing what I call Photographs. ‘Look,’ if you will is and always be subject to Fad and Style, Some ‘tools’ if you will be better suited to achieving these goals, Cartier Bresson compared to Stieglitz in capturing decisive moment, 35 mm vs the View Camera, Ansel Adam vs Galen Rowell in Landscape Photography, David Douglas Duncan the SLR over the Rangefinder. I could go on but my point is this. In Digital it’s not about which one is better over another. It’s about how it will work for YOU in capturing the images that you or your client demand. That said I do use a Fujifilm X-T3 with 56mm f/1.2 and 23 mm f/2 as my favorite kit. I’ve always enjoyed the 35, 85mm combination in my style of photography, I’m proud of the images that this combination gives me. Fujifilm gives me tools that yield me results that rival images that I made with Analog Tools for over 4 decades. Nuff said.

    • @Reggiebphoto
      @Reggiebphoto  4 года назад

      My whole point of the video is in agreement with you. It doesn’t matter. I’m not sure where you deduced I was saying one was better than the other.

    • @Iorndealer
      @Iorndealer 4 года назад

      Reggie Ballesteros never did, and of course I agree with you. Fact is that all photographic systems are a long passing parade. The Fanboys and the Ambassadors drive the market. A professional knows his tools or better wants to. Your discussion on how to better utilize them is great and with merit. My passion is the art, it’s history and it’s evolution. Read “Camera Work” now more then 100 years old and look at the history of 291 Broadway and the “photographic” Scene also 100 years ago. Now a group or a channel articulating that kind of thought and practice would be a rich intellectual endeavor furthering along the Art and The Craft that we call photography. I’ve a sense that from what I glean from your videos that you might be one of those person! Keep up the good work .

    This was a pretty cool video. I only got 18/30. 60%. 10% or only 3 more correct than random guessing. That's embarassing. Lol. This is a really insightful/useful comparison video. However I'd say the shortcomings are: you're comparing good photos that the Fuji took to good photos that the Sony took and purposely comparing photos that could lean one way or the other in terms of dof and possibly properly exposed(SOOC) photos .
    So what might also be useful is to see the series of burst photos that the Fuji took vs what the Sony took of the bouquet toss. We could compare the success rate of in-focus shots of what the intended focus was (bouquet, bride, catcher, etc.) and decide what would be a more reliable camera in that situation. Were the same or similar focus modes used? Which camera gives you better results/more options?
    Then perhaps highlight/shadow recovery of mis-exposed shots to compare, which of course, can be mitigated with skill/experience. However, when it comes to weddings, there will always be a certain, higher percentage of missed opportunities due to the camera, the photographer, and/or nature of the event.
    Anyway, I want to stress that your video was great and didn't need to be anything more. I found it super enlightening and am glad you made it. I hope you make more! I just wanted to add some of my own thoughts to it.

    • @Reggiebphoto
      @Reggiebphoto  4 года назад

      Andrew Giordano thanks for the suggestion. Probably don’t have the bandwidth to make such a comparison tho. At that point it’s more useful for a photographer to do their own tests in the field. This was simply an exercise in it doesn’t really matter.

      @@Reggiebphoto You mean, you tried to match them to the best of your ability so they shouldn't be a factor but they are :) Ok, I was sony shooter for over 2 years and I have switched to fuji xt3 about 3 weeks ago and I also do mainly video, but the colours on Sony were driving me sometimes crazy because they weren't giving me the look I wanted. Now, again, to edit raw files pictures comparing to Sonys 8bit video is a massive difference. So with pictures, you can literally minimise the difference. Also, for a customer, it doesn't matter, they will not recognise the difference. Only a person who has some experience with both cameras can tell the difference and I am still learning about Fuji. 1. and 2. were clear fuji, not just because of the colours, but also the softness. 3. was difficult one. My first guess was straight away sony but longer I looked at it I tend to think it was Fuji. I should have gone with my first instinct. 4. clear fuji. 5. the same as 3. thinking too long. 6. clear sony. I think it was the sharpness that gave it away and the skin tone. 7. fuji skin tones. The big back of the girl helps. No9. here I saw fuji colours but the sharpness was like sony. I went with sony, thought it was colour matched. Number 9 is a perfect hybrid. 13. I was so sure it was Fuji. Really good matching there!!! I could carry on. The point is as people who specialise for what we are looking in cameras, there are some nuances that tell us what we want. You have done a great job matching those pictures. Based on your work, what separates fuji and sony is the softness of the image and the skin tones. Yes, you can match it in the post, but why I should be wasting time when I can get it straight out of the camera. With sony, I always felt like I am shooting sharp digital corporate video. With fuji, I feel like I am shooting on film if it makes sense. For me, there is a difference to my eye. Hence the switch. Also, it shoots 4k 60 fps 10 bit 420 internally so....:D And I really started liking taking pictures with the Fuji. All those dials and aperture ring. With sony, I was purely a video shooter. It is all about personal preference. But your video is great. I am going to discuss more with you in future if you will have time.

    Also is important to test de 23mm 1.4 vs a 35mm 1.5 on a Full Frame Camera, that's why Full Frame win for me, the Bokeh. I still keeping my XT2 with the 23mm 1.4 for travel, but for wedding I just like the Full Frame. Good video man :)

    I was testing both X-T3 and A7 III lately. Many people claim that Fuji is very close to FF just like M4/3 is close to APSC but there is something to the bigger sensors. The look is just different, more 3d like. Look at the images from Fuji GFX...even though they don't have same shallow dof as FF with many lenses due to aperture but those images have some special separation. Same with new Nikon Z + Nikon 50 f1.8 S and Canon EOS R + RF 50 f1.2. Sony is little behind due to worse glass.
    I am Fuji user now and I was blown away at the beginning since I moved from Nikon D600 and A7 Mark I. Fuji has some special rendering, I guess mostly due to it's great film simulations and great skin tones. But now after 2 years with this system I am wondering if I should jump back to FF. AF system on Fuji is still lacking behind, there is no video tracking, coatings on the body are worse then competition (X-Pro3 probably solved that), there is still no IBIS and I guess X-T4 still won't have it, ergonomics were great at the beginning but now I see that I miss the grip and modern dials with custom memory banks which are just much better for fast setting changes. ISO and sharpness is also better on FF even though I was using worse glass on Sony than on Fuji - FE 50 f1.8 vs XF 35 f1.4. Colors also go away rapiddly as soon as you start to go above ISO 1600. Never had that problem with Nikon D600, with Fuji I have to shoot with strobe or I can go without one but then I apply faded look or just ACROS.
    In the end I must admit that in your particular comparison with those presets there is little difference between the two because of this faded look but shooting landscapes, museums or portrait with lively colors I got better results with Sony, although it required more work in post processing than with Fuji. Fuji is great SOOC even with RAW. In the end Fuji and Sony are both capable of delivering the results and each have to decide what is good enough for him/her. For me I guess I miss FF look, especially at those high ISOs. One thing where Fuji destroys competition now and probably in the future is video.

    22 correct! XT3 shooter. If there is foliage in the shot it always has a beautiful teal look on the Fujifilm; others are harder to tell for sure but Fuji has an undefinable vintage film look where Sony is more precise and a bit clinical. Good video- challenging.

    Tbh you you’ll only know the difference in the bokeh and the background separation. I can see the diffence almost every time if you shoot portraits wide open. Because with the FF sensor you can see the diffence.
    And: I’ve down pretty good and do you know why? Your skin tones are always a bit on the magenta side which I don’t like to be honest. It’s not really how it supposed to be, at least in my opinion, and I don’t know if you edit them like that or is it because of the Fuji RAW File. That’s how I knew when a photo was shot with the Fuji.

      Haha yes. An experience photographer would know it’s an impossible task.

    IQ wise both were excellent and cant be differentiated. But tones wise, I could slightly differentiate between fuji and sony. Fuji i feel is more pastel tones with roll off to shadow and highlights being more subtle. Sony is more clinical and a bit more pronounced tones. Colors too. Although you did a good job in matching them.
    PS: I too am a wedding photographer with a team of sony and fuji crew. Hence why it is easier for me. Cheers!

    I pick all correct except b&w
    Very easy to compare
    Fuji produce little blue grey tint inside white cloths & sony produce lite warm tint in white
    Green & pink color looks enhance in fuji
    Skin color looks warmer & red color looks enhance in sony . Fuji produce more contrast & crispiness than sony.🙏🏻

    Got 20 of 30..but honestly all photos are incredible. But I prefer the xt3 for usability

    The sony pics look too vibrant, and the bw ones look off when compared to x-t3. Very easy to distinguish

    How many Fuji bodies and lenses did you use for the wedding? One body + 4 lenses?

    Hard to tell a difference really, though I did get 20 out of 30 correct! 😁
