    Episode Notes:
    1. Prices are rough estimates as of the date of this upload. Prices can and will vary based on the smallest of things. I cannot account for every variance in condition and/or every auction that may go super high or low.
    2. What you do with your money is your business. This is my opinion and it is no more an authority than your own. Spend your money how you want. I'll do the same.
    3. I am not a video game collector and have not been for more than a decade now. The vast majority of my stuff was purchased over many years as these systems existed at retail.
    4. I am not a reseller, nor have I ever been.
    5. I am often asked does RUclips influence retro pricing. Of course it does. Just like every other article, video, message board, and fan site is capable of doing. The internet is a vast area of information, and it was only a matter of time before like minded people converged onto the media explaining the availability of stuff they loved as kids. It was inevitable.

I'm starting to think some of these rare games might be a bargain even at a $1,000. Think 20 years into the future, and ask yourself, what will a sealed, mint condition copy of the original Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Phantasy Star, or Panzer Dragoon Saga be worth? As crazy as it seems, I can honestly see some of these games being worth almost as much as a house. Because all the people who grew up with those games will be in their 60s, and will have all the disposable income, and will be feeling pretty nostalgic about "the good old days". Especially with the miserable course that our society is on, nostalgia is going to be twice as big as it is today.

Whales who's OCD is exploited spend 10's of thousands of dollars on micro transactions and loot boxes in F2P "games" they will never own a year even when they can't afford it.
$1,000 on retro rare *games* as collectables is pretty reasonable by comparison as far as collecting professions go.

A lot of collector youtubers glorify those "holy grails".
It can be easy for people to get swept up in it or try to collect for fame because it's so glorified, they think they'll be a part of a community, but it usually ends up not being fulfilling.

About 4 years ago I needed to build up some cash real fast. So I went on Ebay and sold some of my most prized games in my collection. This is what they were and what they sold for:
Resident Evil Saturn (beautiful condition) $85
    Megaman Legends 2 PS1 (fair condition) $65
Conker's Bad Fur Day N64 (cart only, but perfect label) $70
Burning Rangers Saturn (excellent condition) $275
Snatcher Sega CD (excellent condition) $450
Nintendo Virtual Boy (original box with all US released games complete in boxes with instructions. Except Jack Bros.) $650
Panzer Dragoon Saga (great condition, and it even had the white cardboard disk sleeves instead of the black paper ones) $699
I was sad to see them go since I had owned them for many years, and never intended to let them go. I still kinda miss them today. Especially Panzer Dragoon Saga.
But I definitely needed the money, and I hope the people that bought them appreciate them like I did.
I figured that somebody here would enjoy a little insight into a real story behind selling rare games on Ebay.

Great story, bro. I owned many Saturn games back in the day. I even reserved copies of Magic Knight Rayearth, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Shining Force III and picked them up on launch day. I played these games and loved them, but eventually I had no choice but to sell them as I was in college at the time. A year ago I decided to get them all back now that I could afford to do so. In six months I’ve almost completed my NTSC Saturn collection in extremely high grade. This was only possible because of awesome people like yourself who kept these games in such great shape and passed them on to another person who loves them as much as you did. I hope you get all of those games back soon just like I did. Cheers!🍺🍺

Almost everyone's got at least one story involves the day they made the mistake of not buying something or a bunch of somethings that went on to be worth a lot of money.
I owned the Sega nomad for a couple years before I sold it for practically nothing. I could have never guess how stupid that would have been. The retro market is both fickle and goes up extremely fast. It's supply and demand and the fact of the matter is with these low run games supply will always be far lower than demand.

"If you pay a thousand dollars for a FUCKING video game, there is no one to blame, but yourself!"
    Hilarious! Great video.
I was a fan of the Sega Saturn from the start, so I was always purchasing games back when the system was struggling in the market and prices were MSRP or discounted. Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Rangers, Magic Knight Rayearth each cost me $56 with tax.
Dragon Force, Guardian Heroes, Sonic Jam, Sonic R, and plenty more were all bought brand new for $15-$30 discounted.
Crazy to see how things have changed for the Saturn. When games were cheap, no one wanted them, but humans always desire what is hard to attain, which constantly drives up prices.
Sega Lord X, I showed Yuji Naka my copy of Burning Rangers back in 2001 and he made an audible gasp, he was extremely shocked to see an American copy of the game, and he signed my instructional manual for the game. How much do you think the complete game with signing would be worth?

  • @Bristecom

Keep in mind the Japanese Panzer Dragoon Saga (Azel Panzer Dragoon) will not play on US systems with the converter cartridge. It senses that there is a cart in it and forces you to start the game without a cart so you'll have to play it on a Japanese system or have a mod-chip.

No one had touched them for years, so they were happy to let me walk out with ~50 games for about $20. Panzer Dragoon Saga was one of them. Had to sell the entire collection when times got tough, and it must have been before the surge in demand because I definitely did not get that much for PDS.

Just the utter disbelief that anyone would pay over 500 for a single video game, let alone the inevitable 1,000 it will be in the future, conveyed by you with a perfect delivery which segways into your usual video ending music. As priceless as some of the games mentioned in this video.

Spot on!! I was fortunate and unfortunate..twice with my Saturn collection. My first collection was a pawn shop bought Saturn with Darius Gaiden and Galactic Attack in summer of 1999. So a few weeks later I bought two Imports, Radiant Silvergun and Real Bout Special from Buy-Rite. After that I bought DoDonpachi, DBZ Legends, Thunderforce V, Last Bronx, Fighters Megamix Import, Virtua On Netlink version, Nights with the Special Controller, Burning Rangers, all the Capcom 4 MB games. I did get street Fighter Zero 3 but gave it to a friend because I had gotten the DC version. In 2000 my apartment was broken into and all my Saturn and PSX games including imports were stolen. My second collection was better, but a job loss and pending birth on my 2nd daughter I had to sell my collection once more. After that I never went back to collect the game systems again

I collect in the sense that when I see an high value game sold at a low price, I'll buy it, even though I might not play it for a long time. I will never sell my collection (I'll divorce before that happens) So I am ok with not playing all the games right now. I will not buy a game I have already, just because it it cheap for resell purpose. I do however not do repro or roms as I only consider playing as part of the whole experience. There's just something about holding a complete copy of a mega drive game in your hand. They just look so cool.
The only purchase I regret was a cart for Turtles in Time for the snes which I bought for about 120 dollars, because I was impatient to get it. That was due to miscalculation of exchange rate and shipping on my part. Ive never understood the love nintendo people have for cardboard, especially when you consider what they pay for it....

I collect games of all kinds - I love playing them as much as the history they represent. As such, I do happen to own a few games above 1k USD such as the late release NeoGeo AES titles and a few sealed versions of games I cherished as a child. I certainly don’t blame anyone for it though - and I am very aware of the cheaper alternatives to play. I feel that it is okay to spend how one wants to on a hobby if it genuinely make one happy, and is done nobody’s expense. This, as opposed to say.....a person who would spend on a hobby solely to impress other people.

20ish years ago I walked into a dying Computer City that had everything 80-90% off. Some guy had cleaned out most of the games (His cart was so full that at first I thought it was a cart they were using to stock the shelves). I was annoyed he was buying every copy of every game, but then I noticed he had not hit the Saturn section yet so ran over there and grabbed 1 copy each of every game I did not own. I don't remember how many I bought, but it was a lot. I was a poor college student at the time so it was fantastic to pump up my library so much for cheap, but now looking at the insane prices I can't help but be tempted to eBay them and pay for a kitchen remodel I badly need. Though after reading the comments about emulation being so poor, I'm not sure I can bring myself to do it. If anything, this series has inspired me to pull out most of the games and set up my Saturn on my little 13" crt in the basement..

I actually own the South American release of Burning Rangers and bought it new for about $60 shipped just a few years ago. It is the same box art as the US release but in a small cardboard box with the game in a standard CD jewel case. But the game itself is the exact same US release of the game and even works in normal US Saturns as it is region coded for the US. The text on the box and instructions is all in Portuguese but the rest of the game itself when playing it is the US version. So that is another way to get Burning Rangers for less than the current asking price.

Sonic Jam is great, but some of the sound effects in the original games are strange - ring sounds, for example, are very muted. As for Panzer Dragoon Saga, disc 1 is a great intro but everything is amped up as you move through the game - just fly around Uru - Sunken Southern Ruins at sunset for a taster of its atmosphere. I'm really happy I bought it at launch, because there's no way I would've paid what people are asking for.
