Interesting, now we know this, in some cases it might be helpful to see if the tensioner really turns, which is sometimes hard to see, is to put a white marking on the edge of the tensioner. If it stands still, or moves slowly or irregular, then the tensioner is gone.

Hi Gary, was wondering if you would guide me in the right direction, mk1 citi golf auto 1.6... Carb. 93 I think. Starts first time when cold however after driving a while then stop and get some coffee.... The car will swing none stop before eventually firing. I replaced coil, module, new rotor, spark plugs timing perfect. What am I missing here? I would appreciate your input. Regards Warren

Hi Warren, you may want to invest in a new distributor, check this video from my library ruclips.net/video/ltTaYH5LW0Y/видео.html

@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 Thank you for your response, I actually swopped the distributor today with another friend to test.. Same problem starts up first time everytime however as soon as the car stands a while when hot then it takes a hella lot of swinging before it fires.

Those timing adjuster units are crap. I've had it where it goes loose all by itself. Then when you try to tighten it a bit more you strip the threat. VW!!!!
