    S9 when you set your ignition timing like that do you first make sure your cam and crank are also on their marks as well (1 fire 4 rock;TDC)?

    My golf mk2 has a spark and petrol goes to the carb and i set it to TDC but it is off by one or two teeth can that be the reason why is does not want to start when the ignition is turned it fires but it does not want to idle at all it does sound like it wants to take but nothing.. is it the two teeth out or is it something else thats the problem

  • @bernhardGviljoen
    @bernhardGviljoen 5 лет назад +6

    Your timing is now set to top dead center, which means you'll have to adjust your idle speed again. You'll notice that the engine idles slower as you align the two marks. According to specs, timing should be at around 6 degrees before tdc (firewall side) to allow the entire charge per intake stroke to be burned before the piston starts its way down again, or your performance will drop. If the two marks align, you'll need to turn up your idle speed to keep it around 1000rpm which will result in a very rich mixture when idling. Problem with this is that you have to get the balance between idle speed and timing right. Too far before tdc and it will start pinging under load, too close to tdc and it will jerk and sputter when you pull away due to too much fuel in the mix... I've had some trouble figuring out why my '03 1.4 carb was being so full of shit when I tried it for the first time...

      @bridges5659 5 лет назад

      Vilber, thanks. I've adjusted whilst listening to the idle at running temperature but it pings while driving but no power loss. I don't see any marks as shown in the video. I know it's tricky if the carburettor is not set. Mine is a 1995 Chico mk1. I'll try again when I get time. You know time just flies . I would appreciate any suggestions from you .

      I did this on my toyota tazz I had to disconnect the timing advance and close up one of the vacuum pipes coming from the carburetor to set the advance timing...now the tazz is more responsive and such a joy to drive...I still need to figure out how to do it on my vw mk2 gts....

    • @drevil4454
      @drevil4454 Год назад

      @@lilskhalo7787 you buy a timing ligh with a timing dial guage. Tjen you preset the gauge to say the 6 degrees. Then you adjust your distributor till the marks line up again. Your torque should be spot on.

    Great video thx.If I'm correct you are setting your ignition timing on exatlyTDC?I'm using a static timing gun and my 2002 1.4 carb Citi golf does not allow me to bring the diamond mark on the flywheel to the center mark. I have read that my car should be timed 3 degrees before TDC.So I'm thinking of getting/lending a digital light to set the degrees and then move the dizzy till the marks align...side note my timing marks on the flywheel, crank,cam does align when I manually turn the engine..

    I have a 1.6 '99 Golf Cabrio - AFT engine 187k km, manual. I have recently replaced the distributor so wanted to make sure the timing 100% correct.
    Is the prodcedure the same? The engine looks very similiar, just a updated a bit.
    It also has a slightly rough idle which I have been trying to solve. No vacuum leaks, all new ignition parts, spotless throttle body, air filter etc.
    I wondering if you have any ideas for me to solve that also. Thanks.

      veshan govender hey man, if it's not the spark plugs, there could be a large amount of carbon build up in the valves which do result in misfiring

      Idle switch , fuel pump and check for vacuum suctions at your intake manifold , gasket , injectors. Pour a little water and listen for a rise in the idle when the engine is hot.

    • @bridges5659
      @bridges5659 5 лет назад

      Just try and adjust the distributor carefully whilst at running temperature. You will make out what the idle should sound like. Tap your accelerator fast or quickly , if it pinks , then try again . Also check for markings on your pulley and set that it has timing marks. Mark these with chalk , tipex or white paint. Turn your pully until you bring the number 1 valve 'up' by opening your number 1 spark plug . Check if is up with a screwdriver . You'll make out and feel when it's up. You might have to adjust the carburettor settings also.
