one of South Africa's favorite cars had a misfire when the engine got to normal operating temperature, I had to call on all my experience and expertise to diagnose and fix this problem, enjoy the video. Авто/Мото
Thank you so much! You helped me change my distributor over the weekend, and I've barely any experience with cars. You're a legend!
Fantastic, I am glad you found the video useful, thanks for supporting my channel with your visit.
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 okay great. that means there are 3 marks, one on the crank, one on the can pulley, and a mark on the distributer casing. these marks must be all in their position, rotor showing to the mark on the distributor casing. should be the correct timing
Yes correct as in the video
Thank you Uncle. I used your tips and fitted my own distributor.
Glad to help thanks for supporting my channel.
I just had a very similar issue, on my channel, but from cold start right up to running temp, I replaced coil, still the same, then I tested the plug leads and 3 was under the permissible ohm specs. Replaced leads and she's all good. Many things give similar issues, but testing everything first sometimes save you from buying a +/-R500-R1000 coil, in place of a R250 plug lead set!

Great and educational video!
Hi thank you for the upload, it is very informative and useful. I wanted to ask if the same method works for 1.4 carb motor too? My notch is not facing the same way as yours. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you for this useful case study. One always assumes that the fault could not lie with the distributor. I assume that the fault laid in the Hall sensor, because this is probably the only sub component in the distributor that is temperature sensitive ?
Thanks for the great vids.
I have a Yaris that is jerking or hesitating especially when pulling off from 2nd or/and 3rd gear. I clean the MAF sensor and the PCV valve. Any advice It comes from a service so I didn’t check the plugs, ran out of time too.
Great video!
Thanks uncle Gary

Hi Bennert, thanks for supporting the channel with your visit, try replacing the temp. sender unit, sometimes they malfunction and need replacing. Gary
Very informative thanks so much.

Really cool car. Enjoy
Hi there can I ask how do u set timing on a mk1 golf mpi setup ? Do u do it statically or through computer?
Dankie baie helpful
Any way thanks for the video Sir
nice video thank u... im facing a similar problem wirh my Chico 1.3 carb..drives nice sometime and sometime its up to crap... up hills it battles alot... i pulled each spark plug lead out one at the time and i heard the engine changing bt on the one i think cylinder number 3 it didn't do anything... some ppl are saying it might be a burnt valve😔
Yes it sounds like it could be a compression problem, have a compression test done Nkosikohona, if the plugs, plug wires , distributor cap and rotor is ok.
I really like your videos so informative. On my citi 1.4 carb I found a small amount of oil on the spark plug. I want to change the valve cover gasket and do a service, change plugs and oil. Any tips before I go through with it? I notice you have no video replacing the valve cover gasket
Hi, Nkosinathi, thanks for the support, it means a lot, yes so far I did not do this procedure on my channel yet, but it is simple and straight forward, my advice when servicing, follow my video on the service procedure and you should be ok, let me know how it all turned out.

Thank you...i have a 1400 2007 citi golf fuel ejection.i have a problem with petrol no leaks...took it for a test and they said it has a air leak somewhere. Do you maybe no were i can look for that air leak?
The most common places for air leaks on the 1.4i is the brake booster pipe or intake manifold that is cracked.
Hello ek wil net weet ek ry polo classic 1999 1.4 I en die rpm gaan op en af as jy staan wat kan dit wees

Am driving a golf 3 gsx 1800 carberator now i have abit of problem when turning e.g a circle running from 5th gear changing down to 2nd gear then i turn, now when i press on the gas it jerks abit then it continues what could be the problem ? Thank you
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 Also check that carburettor base gasket, they are well known to crack in the rubber, and give a misfire in turns. Simple test is to have the engine idling, and simply gently press the carburettor side to side, and forward and back, and see if the idle changes. Quick enough to change, so long as you do not have the thread in the top stripped by some previous person. Gasket broken partly, or cracked rubber vacuum hoses, or the PCV hoses and valve cracked or worn, especially the top of the tappet cover.
I have gotten reasonable at putting inserts in there though, or you can try the old standby of removing the rod, cleaning the hole with brake cleaner, and putting a bit of Pratley quicset steel into the hole, and thread the rod back in so it has a new thread in the epoxy when cured.
You can buy that whole carburettor from VW as well, which is not too bad for the price, and that solves a lot of the hesitation issues.
Reminds me, better do the inlet clean this weekend, should solve a lot of the poor idling recently, plus fix the broken rubber pipe that is replaced with a pipe from a can of tyre weld at the moment. Must go past Goldwagen and see if they have the pipe in stock.
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 Friend of mine has one, his mother had one of the first golf's in South Africa, which made it hard to get certain parts, as they had to come from Germany, as they were not local parts. We have done a lot of work on them over the years, and learnt a lot of the common faults.
Also helps that he is a VW certified mechanic, so knows that car back to front from his training, though he has not been a mechanic, other than weekends, for quite a few years now, but still has a good way around them.
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 alright thank you sir, what is HT leads?
I love your videos. what could cause the distributor not to sit flush?
Hi Chinu, thanks for supporting my channel with your visit and interaction, the most common cause is that the lower section of the distributor shaft which is meant to slot into the oil pump is not aligned, this will cause immediate engine failure if not corrected as this shaft drives the oil pump, so be cautious.
thanks thanks for this video
Hi. I've got a 1.4carb golf. I have the same issue. (Misfire and white smoking on heavy acceleration).
I want to replace my distributor, but it seems to be stuck. I have tried tapping it with a hammer. Any suggestions on what I can try next?
Hi Shaun, sorry for your trouble but the only way I ever get these distributors loose is by tapping it with a screwdriver at the base, like in my video, try spraying some Q 20 or any other loosening fluid to help your cause, leave for a few minutes to soak, sometime you just have to keep at it for a while, but it will eventually loosen. Remember you are going to replace the unit so do not be too concerned about the damage.
Hi I have a a misfire problem with my 09 citi wolf.In the morning when I start it up it misfires hectic and when I accelerate. Its been recently serviced and got a new temp sensor and the timing has been set.Do u think it could be distributor as well?
What was the problem on your side?
I hv a mk1 golf, I have a problem with my temperature gauge where it sometimes goes up and goes down for some reason, I was told I should suspect a leakage somewhere on my water system, but I can't find or see where that problem comes from, my fan n thermostat works perfectly, but just that issue with the malfunction of the temp gauge, any ideas of how I can check this leak before the engine gets warmer pls? Ur advise is highly appreciated ❤️
If the gauge goes up and down it may be the grounding of the car that is faulty or something
Replace the temp. sender switch this usually causes the problem you described, Bennert.
Wonderbar.
Thanks for supporting my channel with your visit Vajaynunthan, it is very much appreciated.
I have a 2002 1.4i citigolf. I changed the spark plugs recently due to misfiring. Within two weeks my nr. 3 cylinder spark plug keeps on dying. I keep on changing spark plugs but after watching your video I now know to check my distributor as well. I also found that my number 4 spark plug does not screw in all the way (guessing the thread most prob are damaged on the head). Why does my car keeps popping the nr. 3 spark plug? Think of skimming and redoing my cylinder head completely to solve any other hidden issues
If it is fouled due to oil, then it is valve stem seals or oil rings worn, if it is fuel then over-fuelling could be the cause.
any advice on a velociti 14i that seems to have a problem when it rains is it the coil alternator or the distrubutor please if you could help thanks ..........
Sounds like you are getting water ingress into the distributor or on your HT Leads, causing misfires, try replacing Cap, Rotor and HT Leads when the insulation on the HT Leads deteriorates as time passes when water splashes on the HT Leads, it shorts causing a misfire. Water under the Distributor Cap will cause a similar misfire. Hope this helps, Sean
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 ill sure take your advice i dont see any harm in replacing those parts ...i thank you .
Good day
I have a polo playa 1.6 2001 model , when I pull away when going up hill the distributor makes a klucking sound ,is the distributor worn ?
Also when I push the gas pedal to the floor on 4th gear or 5th, on 3000 rpm up, the reff counts goes up quick ,car looses some power then when you release the gas pedal a bit then power comes back and reff counter back to normal, car does feel Weaker on drive so I was wondering could it be the distributor causing that problem cause maybe its worn bad ?
It does sound like the distributor, only one way to find out, replace it,
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 thank you for the reply
Should I just replace the cap and router or the hole distributor ?
It is not too expensive, the complete distributor would be best.
Plz assist. I have a 1800 carb golf . Did the bearings recently but not the rings . The car starts and ravs strong but it misfire like hell. The no 1 and 2 plugs seem 2 be dead when i pull them out the cars idle dnt drop like wen i put 3 and 4. What can be coz of tht misfire .tx
It could be a number of things, spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor. It could be a leaking intake manifold, cylinder head gasket blown between 1 and 2 cylinders, broken compression rings also come to mind, these are all possibilities but it is not exhaustive, I suggest you let a trained professional mechanic have a look if you cannot find the fault.
Hello
I have a question about my mk3 jetta 2.0 8v . The car idles at 1000rpm and does sometimes go above and below , and sometimes it's just at 1000rpm however the problem is whenever I put the idling at 800rpm then the car has a huge miss and does not rev up properly. My cam timing and ignition timing is all in . What do you think it could be? I've had my plugs, leads changed and throttle body cleaned.
Do a compression test
Can u pls help i have th same car, i have a problem with the brake pedal sometimes it is spongy whn applied i hv recently changed my pads but stl no changes im around brackenfell
Try bleeding the brakes there might be air in the system.
please assist i have jetta 3 1.8 8v conversion from carb to fuel injected. car gone sluggish. did a service and still sluggish. fresh leads, fresh spark plugs, oil, oil filter, fuel filter and 319000km 1995. timing marks all match and 6 degrees advanced in distributor timing for slightly better performance. what you think can be the problem ?
Thanks for supporting the channel Ray, it sounds like you may have a fuel pump not delivering enough pressure, have it checked it should have at least 3bar. it could also be dirty injectors, double-check your fuel filter, I experienced new faulty ones in the past. Good luck.
I have a bad misfire. this video seems to be the solution. also fuel injection. first, I had a throttle body problem because when I floored the car, the engine hesitated hugely. I found the petrol cable was a little bit too tight. a mm slack on cable and the problem is solved. I will try the distributor thing for the mis in idle. the engine also ping sometimes and there is no advanced retart component, maybe just some timing I think. what is the timing degree setting?
Yes, it does sound like distributor problems, the timing setting on these Golfs is 9 degrees before TDC (top dead center) at 800rpm.
Hi, have a citi golf curb that starts and sometimes dont wanna start. It cranks but no start. Have spark from the coil. Even died when driving
Hi Franklyn, thanks for tuning in, try replacing the distributor like in the video, sounds like it may be your problem, good luck I hope you solve the issue.
This is such great video's. you don't maybe know where the relay for a heater and wipers are on a citi golf?
It is usually above the fuse box, Manie
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 Thank you very much, I really appreciate it.
It is not quite clear to me what caused the misfire. What was wrong with the old distributor? And why did you not use a timing light to put the distributor on the right timing? Thank you.
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 Yes, you got another issue there, probably inlet is dirty as well, or vacuum leak, as that is very common. Blast of inlet cleaner to get the gunk away, a quick look at all the hoses and the idle will be puurfect again.
hi 👋 Did u ever made a video on jetta3 or golf 3
Yes check the playlists on my channel, there is a Vw repairs playlist with over 60 Vw videos.
Good evening. I Have a question. My 1400i, 2004 city golf start misfires. No 2 and 4 spark plug is wet with fuel. I changed the plug wires around, replaced the plugs, no difference. The mechanic said I must replaced the injectors on 2 and 4 cylinder. I changed them but no difference. It still misfires. The car was in for the engine not starting. So they repaired the black box under the steering. Please assist me with this problem. Thanks
It sounds like you have a problem with the fuel pressure relief valve Peet, this regulates the fuel pressure in the common rail, have that checked.
Hi oom, i have citi golf 2008 1.4i mpi, after driving a while my rev counter will start bouncing around and then drop to 0, all other dials on the dash work properly during this time. Then after a while the car starts jerking and loses power and it switches off. It will take about 5-10 mins of swinging and then it will start again. This problems happens every now and then, do you think it's hall sensor/distributor or fuel pump relay problem?
TIA
It is most likely the distributor stator inside the distributor as the rev counter is connected to it, replacing the distributor will sort the problem as in this video.

Quick question
A faulty distributor can cause abit of a drop in power?
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790
Ohh I see..
I also noticed that it has a delayed acceleration sometimes
Mine is cranking but not starting can it be distributor ?module and coil is fine....what surprise me about what you are doing is where your time marking is...mine they pPinter to fourth spark plug?
My golf misfires at 3000rpm the 4th plug lead seems abit loose could it be that or what are the other options that could make the car misfire
There are a few possibilities, a malfunctioning fuel injector, broken compression rings, coil, plug wires, spark plugs that are fouled, fuel pump delivery pressure, if it has a distributor cap it could be cracked, a rotor, these all have to be checked, start at the most obvious, like the spark plugs..
Why did you have to advance the timing after you replaced the distributor? What was the indicator that shows you that you needed to do that? Not starting or rough idle or what? nice video
I advanced the timing because the car revved lazy giving a clear indication the timing was a little retarded, the most accurate way of doing it is to use a timing light to apply the timing specs.
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 thank you. My citi golf 1.4 carb 02 model still jerking and dying after a few kilometers driving. I've replaced the distributor coil and the distributor. Still doing the same. Any advice?
Check the ignition module, it is usually bolted onto the firewall, you may have to lift the plastic cover to reveal it.
You have to check the distributor module, it is situated against the firewall, you may have to lift the big plastic cover to reveal it.
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 does it sit behind the dashboard against the firewall or behind the left air vent against the body? Last but not least... Does it have to be programmed or not on this model? Thank you for the advise I really appreciate it
Hi i experience misfiring with my golf1 1.4 it jerk when i drive and use to much fuel .It sometimes doesn't start with the first key, it start the goes off in the mornings. I changed coil and spark cables but still what might be the problem?
There is a multitude of possibilities Keneilwe, it could be the cold start unit, throttle body, bad spark plugs, faulty, distributor, and the list goes on.
Also change the throttle body and spark plugs the problem started after i change the distributor. It have the cough sound on the exhaust and the idling is not right it goes up n down
hi there i see that distributor dont have vaccuum advance can it also be used on a carberated engine?
Yes it can be used on a carb engine too, Renaldo, the only disadvantage is there will be no vacuum advance only centrifugal advance but the difference will hardly be felt.
Hi uncle, can this cause my 2004 1.4 carb golf to strugle when cold, and when hot she idles fine, its as if when cold sounds only if running on 3 cylinders?
Hi i got misfire special when is raining and i noticed something like grey grease around the hole
If it is a Citi Golf like in this video then you have to replace the ht leads, cap, and rotor.
Hi i have a 1.4 tenacity 2009 car starts ok but idle is rough and stalls when cold. When the engin heats up its ok what could be the problem. And where are you located
If it is a carburettor model, then this is normal as it does have a choke unit to keep it idling while cold, as it heats up to normal operating temp. then the choke must be pushed back as it will now be running too rich with the choke pulled out when the engine is warmed up.
Not carberator sir its fuel injection
Ok then replace the cold start unit, it is the unit on top of the water flange in front on the cylinder head, where the top radiator hose attaches., it doubles as the temp. control unit, it has 4 prongs.
Hi...i have a Golf 1, it misfires and revs up while iddling. All this hapenned after replacing my distributor. It revs from 10k 20k RPM even when i apply brakes or clutch

Hey boss so I’m also having an issue with my golf I just did the engen for the past 3 days but now I’m trying to start it and it’s not starting it’s just cranking
Hi Godfrey, thanks for tuning into my channel, sorry to hear of your troubles, there could be a multitude of possibilities why your newly rebuilt engine will not start, as you know for any car to run it needs 3 main things, compression, spark and fuel, so start there to check if all 3 these are in order.
Then it could be an incorrectly timed engine also, hope this helps, good luck.
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 I’ve checked the compression and it’s there , and also the fuel I bought it it’s coming through but what I realised was the spark plugs I took them out they were a bit oil and I didn’t use new one I used the old ones that were there before so I’m gonna try buy new plugs coz the spark is coming through from the coil
My city golf also misfiring, how do you know it's a distributor because it was fine and the next Morning it misfired with black smoke and sounds
Hello Zola thanks for supporting my channel with your visit, it is a difficult question to answer especially that I am not by the car to physically check it but I will try to advise best I can, when a car misfires and there is black smoke it normally indicates an over fuelling problem, like the carb flooding or in the case of fuel injection the throttle body. The Citi Golf is known for distributor malfunction after around 150000kilometres and upward, it is cheap enough to replace with a new one, around R500.00. Check all the other possibilities 1st, like Spark Plugs, Plug Wires, Distributor Cap, Rotor etc. I wish you luck with sorting the problem, Gary
did water get in engine bay ? open spark plus dry clothe in there. sorted
Must I do timing if I change the distributor
It needs to be set with a timing light yes.

Broken Cam belt
Electric Fuel Pump Failure
Low Compression

Check the fuse and the relay switch, Jakes, it is in the fusebox.
Can I have a 1.6 that just died on me when I was coming from work what can the issue but
Hello Nice21, thanks for supporting my channel with your visit, when an engine dies it could mean numerous possibilities, no petrol, no spark, no compression, these are the 3 main components for an engine to operate, so one has to eliminate the possibilities starting from the most obvious or cheapest and through a process of elimination try to find the problem, it could be a petrol pump, distributor, coil, plugs, rotor distributor cap, broken cam belt the list goes on, wishing you luck, have a great 2021. Gary
There's more to this fuel injection system than anticipated...
Just one quick question though, after all this... how do I get the mp9 ECU into timing mode ?
As where the car idles itself at 1500 rpm with no electronic advance to use a timing light to get it done properly...?
Or do I assume all is correct after this ?
And should the timing mark on the distributor and rotor should not be facing say somewhere between the cylinder head and the timing hole on the gearbox ?
Its hell getting that notch on the distributor to line up with the proper facing direction of the distributor timing marks
those long nose pliers are gonna work hard a few times and irritability will kick in a few times...
every time you push the distributor into the notch, the rotor moves + - 25 degrees to a undesired spot.
At least we don't have a misfire half way through the revs.
P.S: Those misfires are usually only one of three things..
- Distributor
- Coil pack
- Ignition leads/ Plug Wires
Are u around Cape Town?
Yes
No need to time the (2:24) engine by turning it so that the rotor points to number one plug's lead, simply observe (or mark it) the position of the rotor on the old distributor and when fitting the new distributor turn it so that the rotor points to the same position on the new distributor as on the old one.
Careful Philip, this is wreckless advice as it is a completely new and different distributor being fitted.
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 If the rotor on the new distributor points to the same cylinder's lead as on the old distributor then there is absolutely nothing "wreckless" about this advice. If for instance the old distributor's rotor pointed to number two and the new distributor's rotor points to number two (same spot on the the distributor as the old one) then it is exactly the same as if both were pointed to number one. It is not necessary to turn the engine so that number one is at firing stroke, why would it be different what cylinder is on firing, as long as the rotor on the new distributor is pointing to the same cylinder as with the old distributor.
Yes, Philip, we all know that you obviously misunderstood my answer and beware of liability suits, please.
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 Nothing to understand, all I said is that it is not necessary to turn the engine so that number one is on firing stroke and I still stand by that. What difference does it make what cylinder is on firing stroke, simply put the new distributor the same way back as the old one with the rotor pointing in the same direction, I often see technicians wasting time with turning the engines to number one firing when replacing or working on distributors etc, it is a waste of time. As long as the rotor is in the same position relative to the distributor and the cap everything is the same.
Hi Oom- I hope you are well. I need assistance. I bought a microbus, recently I was told the distributor is not working. Hi Abrahams with gears before u think of dismantling the whole gear box, check first simple and easy to fix things like, gear link bushings, they are a common reason for gears not to link up with the engine, try changing those nsee if u won't get it right, good luck
Where u based
I need your help please man. My car won't start. No spark nothing
Hi Da Loco thanks for supporting my channel with your visit, I will try to help, firstly any car needs 3 things to start, fuel, compression and spark, you are saying there is no spark, I am assuming you own a Vw Golf, remove the main plug wire from the coil hold it about 5mm from any earth like the cylinder head and get someone to crank the engine by turning the key if there is no spark, it is likely the main fuse in the fuse box is blown, check all the fuses and replace any blown ones.
If you have an immobiliser fitted to the car it may be this causing no spark, have it checked, or the coil has packed up, it usually has a module behind the coil itself or mounted behind the firewall on the passenger side, depending on the model Vw Golf you have, you may have to replace the module and/or coil.
If you get a spark from the coil then it could be the cap, rotor or the distributor itself, also check the plug on the distributor for corrosion and broken wires under the rubber cover, if you buy a new distributor, you will get a cap and rotor with for around R500, good luck I hope this helped,
wishing you an awesome 2021.Gary
