- In 2015, Steven Jones shot four of his fellow NAU students, killing Colin Brough. Prosecutors claimed he was a cold, calculated killer, but Jones claimed his life was in danger.
The fact that the shooter didn't kill the woman makes his story more probable.
Right...i didnt understand why he didnt kill her if he was so cold blooded. She was obviously helping one of the frat boys live.
Honestly
Because she didnt have part of it
revantions my boy Exactly
Ramen Jim you're restating what he said. He meant that since they were intoxicated and the defendant didn't appear to be his story is likely and he's innocent. He's saying since the girl wasn't shot that he isn't a cold blooded killer like the prosecutors are making him out to be.

It’s hard not to feel sympathy for both parties. The kid who died obviously didn’t deserve that. But when 4 college kids are punking on you it was life or death for him. The two kids who survived obviously aren’t telling the whole story.
My personal opinion is it wasnt life or death, but you have a right to the dignity of defense when 4 men wanna stomp your teeth it.

Moral of the story, don’t defend yourself in a life or death situation and just let them kill you since that’s the right thing to do, and if you try to defend yourself, the attackers will be seen as the victims
@warrior 4467 like following someone out to their car?
warrior 4467 ass kickings don't just fall out of the sky? Have you even seen all the racist videos on Asians lately due to the Corona virus? As of now, a lot of Asians are arming themselves.. If they were to defend themselves with deadly force, then so be it. So yes, the guy that got his ass kicked had a right to return the favor especially when he was outnumbered. Would have been a very different situation if it was a fair fight (like a 1vs1) and he got his ass kicked but it wasn't. So he was scared and angry and did what was needed to do. I'm glad it ended as a mistrial and I hope it stays that way

@@pinkumomo1 The prosecution literally shows that he goes to his car and walks 90 feet BACK towards them before shooting, he lied and told police he was attacked right at his car. He went back to attack them
@@responsibleriley4140 No he didn't lie at all. If you know how lawyers work, their whole job is to make the defendent look like a liar. You never heard the defense on this matter. My guess would be they followed him to the car and backed off when the saw the gun. At this point considering they were all drunk(not to mention on Xanax which in itself is deadly and makes one black out) they most likely kept trying to close the distance whenever he wasn't aiming at them. So as to get them to back off enough in order for him to enter the vehicle he would have had to walk them away from the vehicle. At some point the deceased must have decided to be rash and charge him which ended up in him getting shot. From the footage at the crime scene as well as the interrogation room it is clear he did not want to kill or hurt anyone. Also when he said the line "I thought I was going to die and felt in danger for my life" he laid the groundwork for a perfect self defense case. Lawyers can be some of the most fucked peoples, normally I am not a huge fan of defendants for helping obviously guilty criminals beat their cases. But prosecutors can be just as bad, like in this case said prosecutor tried to paint the defendent as a cold blooded murderer when clearly to most people he was not. Also take a look at the fact that the jury was hung up on sentencing, this just shows that the prosecutor could not paint the defendent in such a bad light because he really was a decent human being, who was put in a situation where he had no choice but to gun down a fellow human being.
This makes me angry, I couldn’t imagine having a group of drunk and high guys coming at me. I would fear for my life too. You can tell he didn’t mean to kill anyone and didn’t want to hurt anyone. He was defending himself the way he felt was necessary. Not to mention it’s his story against a whole bunch of frat boys who were drunk and high, who’s it going to look better for 1 guy saying “they were bullying me, I feared for my life” or a group of guys saying “we didn’t do anything it’s his fault”
Don't talk to the police without an attorney!

Jessica the shooting happened 90ft from his car though..
The group chased him, attacked him, were drunk, and bullied him ......He didn't start the fight, but he did end it. It was an unfortunate situation, I feel bad for students and parents but people should know actions have consequences.
the group chased him, gave up chase, he was well far away from them, came back from 30 yards away and shot them, thats not self defense.
He didn’t just fire one shot to scare them off. That would be understandable. He shot MULTIPLE people and killed one. That isn’t self defense. It’s murder. There was no reason for him to continue shooting. And bullying is not an excuse for murder.

What people say, and do, immediately after a shooting is very telling. He didn't get in his car and leave, he didn't run away, and he gave up his handgun when it was over. Pathetic. Definitely justified and you can tell by his instant remorse it wasn't intentional. What kind of cold blooded killer looks at the blood on their hands and breaks down like that? If he's manipulating the situation, he's damn good at it and has me convinced.

Saw it all the time in college. Saw the football team do it too. They got away with it. I lived across the street from them. It was sad as hell.
On the other hand...my brother was in a frat. He is 120lbs. He passed out walking home one night and some competition frat boys actually carried him home. He was wearing his frat hat. So there are good guys and bad guys.
It was rape that we worried about then. 20+ years ago. I could not walk alone or without pepper spray. Frat boys were notorious for ganging up on females and dragging them to a rape session. Yet the University never did prevention or acknowledgement. Most did not file reports out of inflicted shame/ guilt. Again, sad as hell.
Today I worry about my kids going to college and if it is worth the experience/ degree.
Great self defense

BUBBLES SPRING Ganging up a dragging a girl off? That's not reality. Only happens rarely. The majority of college campuses are beyond safe
John B. Ok, Ted Bundy.
I usually don't feel bad for killers, but being in college myself, I know how cocky and intimidating frat boys can be, ESPECIALLY when under the influence and around their equally cocky friends. His story is very plausible, but I'm wondering where all of his friends were? They were also supposedly a victim of bullying so how did they manage to get away while the frat boys targeted Steven? Also why were they not called to trial? Anyways, I'm not sure what to think of this, but I do feel bad for the guy. He clearly got his lip busted that night and I felt so bad when he said he got his glasses knocked off.
This is only a part of the story. He was separated from his friends who went to look for another friend who got lost.
Brooklynn Alexis, I posted this a week ago so I forgot a bit of the details about this story but didn't he go up to the frat house with a few other friends? If not it was kinda stupid to go up there by himself. I feel like he's smart enough to know not to do something like that.
I don't know, generally if I'm looking for my friend I'm not going to avoid going somewhere to see if they are there. Even if you do ring a door bell you shouldn't have to fear someone answering a door threatening to kill you or beat you up just because you are looking for someone who is lost. That's terribly irrational.
Brooklynn, I meant going ALONE! Why would all of his friends split up and he went alone, to a frat house??? Idk if you're in college, but this is just common sense among us students. Obviously he would go look for him there, but why alone? That's my only problem with this.
Vina Why not go alone to look for your lost friend, I would. They last thing running through my mind is someone threatening me cause I rang the door bell to ask if they happen to see my friend.
The cuts and bruises on him shows that he was attacked and likely first. No way some dude alone will want to attack 4 guys. Looks like self defense against cowardly bullies.

Yeah he leaves and the next day they bully him again and threaten him again... I feel like he did something rational but he is sorry about it, it was a form of self defence, if he was really cold blooded he would have shot the girl helping one of them, when he was in custody he was freaking out and reliazed he fucked up and told them to focus their attention to aid the boys
Ryan Liu oh so all school shooters are just defending themselves by that irrational logic. Someone bullying you doesn’t mean you get to shoot them.

They may have bullied him, however he managed to get to his car. He was capable of leaving without being attacked further, but he decided revenge was more important. After he began shooting two of them began to run- they surrendered and posed no threat, and it is because of this that his self defense became revenge killing, and its because he chose to continue attacking despite them fleeing that it is murder instead of self defense

In gun safety class they really make it a point to teach you to deescalate and leave the scene because the moment you pull out the gun you become the aggressor in the law’s eyes. It’s unfortunate, but when owning a gun it’s important to understand the consequences that come with it
Great point!

He lied through his teeth. Thats what bullies do when caught.

Let's imagine a different scenario based off the facts.... he moved 90ft toward his targets after getting his gun from his car (fact). Now at this point let's say he shoots first or decides to threaten the group with the gun. The stupid druggie frat guys still don't know common sense and attack a man with a gun out of self defense. Sounds plausible to me considering the shooter decided to lie about defending himself at his car(which is where he needed to get his gun).
these guys were on drugs & intoxicated. their version of the story is invalid.
he is innocent. DISMISSED
Agreed, he definitely seems innocent to be based on what was shown in the video. And the drunks assaulting him can’t even put an accurate story together. I believe I could convict this guy unless they left pertinent evidence out of this video.
Of course the frat dudes cannot put a story together. Anyone who knows anything about xanax knows that mixing then with alcohol makes you black out instantly. And anyone who has blacked out before knows you literally have no recollection of what you may have done whilst blacked out. Any story they have about that night after taking the xanax is most likely made up.
