As an ER nurse I see all types of psych cases show up to the ER and all types of cops showing up with such individuals. You get cops that clearly think they are above the law or are on power-trips or believe themselves to be something they are not while wearing that badge and carrying that gun. You get psych patients who are not really mental cases, rather people who just need a bit of love or affection or self-respect or at the risk of seeming insensitive, people that are lazy and only find excuses not to assume responsibility in life and carry their own weight and only seek attention and make themselves put to be a victim of life and society. You also get good cops, kind hearted, humble and seemingly there to help people and who have picked their profession with a ernest and sincere heart with sincere intentions....and you also get spych cases who are real psych cases, in the sense that these people are really living in a different reality and they will need all of the supervision in the world not be a threat to themselves and other people because there is psychotic, violent, harmful intentions existing within them. At the end of the day, you hope that good prevails in all sectors of life and in people's heart and minds. I myself have been attacked several times at the hospital by psych patients trying to viciously harm me, sadly, I where no badge or carry no gun and my only job is to care for these people without the threat of wanting to hurt them or to seem like a threat to them as sometimes cops do given that they have an assertive and authoritarian presence carrying a gun and hurling orders at them.

They provide counseling free of charge even if not diagnosed with PTSD but counseling isn't enough. Sometimes mandatory hospitalization is a better option to truly get to the core of the matter and treatment. Unfortunately if you are diagnosed they give scripts and basically you are left on your own. There isn't a one size fits all approach to actually helping. VA and the military don't really know how to handle PTSD other than pay you some money, provide counseling and prescription drugs, again that's a one size fits all scheme. He was obviously an extreme case, don't know if he was self medicating (illicit drugs or alcohol) which helps for a moment (or so we feel) with some symptoms but not the root cause or rehabilitation. There were perhaps two great lives lost in that incident. We will never know if he could have been helped using different tactics. It's a shame how they turn their backs on us and say "Man up, deal with it!" Now multiple families are hurting even those of the survivors; they now may have PTSD. Vicious cycle 😥

@@davidtriana so who's decision should it be to allow or not allow the "mental ill" to have weapons. What criteria or standards do we use to classify someone as mental ill? The answer is not to remove weapons from the mental I'll but to actually do something about the mentally ill. The changes that led to this lack of space, as well as changes to the institutionalization process, have made it impossible for people with severe mental illness to find appropriate care and shelter, resulting in homelessness or “housing” in the criminal justice system’s jails and prisons. The percentage of people with severe mental illness in prisons and jails is generally estimated to be 16 percent of the total population. Given that the population in U.S. prisons and jails totaled 2,361,123 in 2010, it would appear that nearly 378,000 incarcerated persons have severe mental illness. How Did We Get Here? Deinstitutionalization as a policy for state hospitals began in the period of the civil rights movement when many groups were being incorporated into mainstream society. Three forces drove the movement of people with severe mental illness from hospitals into the community: the belief that mental hospitals were cruel and inhumane; the hope that new antipsychotic medications offered a cure; and the desire to save money. It has not worked out as well as expected on any of the three fronts. People with severe mental illness can still be found in deplorable environments, medications have not successfully improved function in all patients even when they improve symptoms, and the institutional closings have deluged underfunded community services with new populations they were ill-equipped to handle. Historically, state hospitals fulfilled many needs for people with severe mental illness which included therapy, medication, medical treatment, work and vocational training, and a sense of community. Prior to 1950s, it was not uncommon for state hospitals to provide a work environment. There were often workshops and farms to make or grow some of their own needs. This was particularly true at the end of the nineteenth century before entrepreneurs realized there was a profit to be made in the state hospital system and slowly began selling goods and services to the hospitals, reducing “the amount of work and increasing the amount of idleness in the system”.

We need to do more for our veterans, this is so shitty and tragic but we need to treat their mental health we cant just leave them with PTSD
Miriam De Jesus I'm a 23 yr Afghanistan War Army retiree, I'll weigh in according to my experience with the military and VA.

Did u miss the other guy put a lazer in his face that was a trigger probably a flash back can't always blame if other's are starting the issue
While in basic training, my flt mate told me about his uncle that was taking care of him.
He ended up having a vietnam flashback and put a gun up to my flt mates head (he was 8-10) years old. And his uncle started yelling “you wont get me you Vietcong bastards, i have one your guys ill fucking kill him” while holding the gun to his head only to point it to his own and he killed himself in frint of my flt mate.
He told me he called his dad after to pick him up cuz uncle tommy wasnt taking care of him anymore.
His father asked why and he just came to pick him up only to see his brother with a loaded gun in his hand and a hole in his head. As a child that must be fucked to see but i cant also imagine what his uncle was going thru to do something like that.
I can only pray and wish the best for those who need the help🙏🏾
Veterans are more harm than good to society. We need to stop praising them.

"History Of Mental Illness" Has an AR-15. Mmmmmmmmmm
@Semper fidelis Semper Paratus how were they know XD
@ The legality of the weapon was never in question. His mental health is.
@ "The answer is not to remove weapons from the mental I'll but to actually do something about the mentally ill." Okay. And how do you suggest we do that?
