  • ►Performing an oil change on your Mk4 Volkswagen Golf, GTI, Jetta, Beetle, or any other Audi or VW with the 1.8t engine is one of the simplest and most important maintenance tasks you can complete.
The 1.8t is an old engine at this point and will require more frequent oil changes than it once did. We recommend replacing the oil and filter every three to four thousand miles to ensure that this engine continues to perform as it once did. Neglecting to replace your oil can quickly result in catastrophic engine failure, requiring full replacement.
In this DIY, Michael Hidalgo walks us through the step-by-step process of replacing the oil and filter on this Volkswagen Mk4 Golf GTI that belongs to Jamie Orr. This process can be done with minimal tools in less than an hour in your garage or driveway at home. Making this process even easier is our assembled oil change kits. For your car, be sure to use the "My Garage" vehicle selection tool on our home page to ensure an exact fit.

On my Jetta MK4 I find some aluminum foil strategically placed and shaped to cover those hoses helps to direct the oil into my drain pan, and keeps the hoses clean when removing the oil filter. Keep the MK4 content coming! 👍

I had a manual 2001 1.8t 4dr. Bought it new. I loved that car so much. I cried for a full hour when I finally talked myself into selling it to buy a manual 2013 2dr GTI. I really did cry for a full hour. It was such a great car and so fun to drive. It was the first car I ever loved. ...🥲

Your just put full five liter oil in 1.8 liter engine. How many liter can MK4 2.0 lit engine take?

Can we use an pump extractor via the dip stick? So we don’t have to deal with the drain plug.

      You certainly could.

I actually tried this and was only able to suck out 1/2quart. I would say no on the oil extractor method
