  • Just a 'how-to' video showcasing the process for replacing the fuel pressure regulator on the 7.3 Powerstroke. This is on a 2001 F-250, so I imagine that it qualifies for the 1999-2003 model years, but it's possible that all (or some) of it applies to the 1994-1997 OBS models as well, but I can't guarantee it.
    Symptoms of a fatiguing/failing FPR spring:
    -longer start up crank
    -poor acceleration
    -rough idle/excessive vibration
    -more pronounced clatter/'cackle'
    than usual from #8 injector
    -black smoke
    -performance decline
    A couple notes:
    Once you have reattached the regulator, but before reattaching the fuel line, I like to use a bore camera to look inside the regulator to ensure that the spring is properly aligned/centered. You may be able to see it with your own eyes or take a picture with your phone, but it's a tough angle and a very small opening to look through.
    The item I keep referring to as a "crush washer" is more like a rubber grommet. Crush washers are made of metal/steel, so my use of the term in the video is incorrect.
    I want to apologize for all the sweating/panting/straining sounds... me being the genius that I am decided to make this video during the summer on one of the three days the temperature exceeded 100 degrees. 🥵 that plus the warmth from the engine made it impossible for me to rest my weight in any way (since the surfaces were too hot to touch) and seeing as how my truck is lifted, I was having to stand on my tire and bend over into engine bay = all the strain was directly on my back. If you speak chipmunk, you could hear me b***hin' about it.
    The Riffraff Kit comes with three springs to choose from, depending on which level of PSI you desire.
    *Silver = 55 PSI
    *Gold = 62 PSI
    *Black = 70 PSI
    When I was discussing the 6.0 Poppet, the kit it came with was the one from Amazon that also had the FPR housing with it. It did NOT come with the RiffRaff Spring Kit.

    Question; do you know of a place to get the correct poppet for the 7.3 as a single part?
    I’m not finding it as a single part and I’ve only found it sold as a kit (pretty expensive). I’m not interested in the entire kit because, I do like the design of that Amazon housing you also used and I decided to use that part alone form their kit. I don’t want to buy multiple kits to keep cherry picking the good parts.
    Thank you.

      Unfortunately I am in the same boat as you :/ I want to replace my poppet too, but it seems like it only comes in kits. Even worse is the pictures of the kits generally don't have the right camera angle to show whether the poppet has a hole in it or not.
      As far as companies that I trust, here are two different options, but they are each 60-70 bucks, but will be top notch quality.

    my question is did you use the poppet with or without the center hole for the 7.3 As you put the new one in you did not tell us the one you was going in with. I seen the one you took out had a hole but you said the the hole is for the 6.0 So did you install one with no hole? Thanks

    • @jamesb1988
      @jamesb1988  Месяц назад

      No, the hole is for the 7.3. I left the one that was already installed in there. The poppet I first showed like 2 mins into video went into garbage.

      "We are beginning to see some FPR rebuild kits offered on eBay and Amazon that supply a new FPR poppet valve. These poppet valves are from a 6.0L Ford engine and not the 7.3L engines where the fuel systems work quite differently. The Ford 7.3L engine FPR poppet has a small pressure relief hole in the end of the poppet to allow the fuel pressure to drain down when the engine is shut off. Without this relief hole, the fuel system remains pressured up, causing potential damage to your injectors and can cause fuel system leaks when parked. We also see kits for sale in these same venues that sell FPR springs that will overpressure your system and cause leakage and injector damage."

    I have a question,i have the same truck but i used the sring and kit that came with the billet regulator,you mentioned the brass plunger having a hole in it the new one I installed doesnt, also my truck wont start,i have 70 psi at the fuel bowl with the key on.

    • @ronaldlemons2836
      @ronaldlemons2836 11 месяцев назад

      So the plunger needs to have that little hole in it?

    • @jamesb1988
      @jamesb1988  11 месяцев назад +2

      Well it doesn't need the hole, it will start/run using a poppet without it. But it's not ideal. For instance in my truck it made my clatter/"cackle" from the #8 injector way louder, which is usually related to wrong fuel pressure.
      Do you have a bore sight? One of those little noodles with a camera on it? Cause before reattaching the fuel line to the regulator, you should try to look into the regulator to make sure that the spring is lined up dead center. You might be able to see it using a mirror if you get creative.
      It is incredibly easy for the spring to get bent off to one side when attempting to reattach regulator housing. Cause if that spring is in there improperly it will cause high pressure and absolutely contribute to a no start scenario.

    • @kirkerickson1591

      switching plungers shouldn't matter for fuel running to bowl, only out of it

    • @jamesb1988
      @jamesb1988  5 месяцев назад

      Yes, stock brass plunger/poppet is fine! Other than a couple superficial scrapes on mine it was unaffected and perfectly operational.
      The orings/spring are the main things that wear out/need replacing.
