Two years later and this still ends up being a problem. My laptop updated last night and I had this same problem. The second fix was what helped fix everything. Thank you so much for explaining this in such a clear way, I don't know what I would have done otherwise.
@@Ahmedch49 It worked out for me twice, I had this issue two times. I'm not entirely sure how to explain what to do if it doesn't work, because the second fix he lists in the video is what helped both times with my laptop
@@Azura_Shades you deleted the one profile and then renamed the one by removing .bak ? I did the same a couple of times and restart my laptop but i can't see my original profile, theme, wallpapers etc.
@@Ahmedch49 Yes, that's what I ended up doing. I had to pay close attention to the file I deleted. I'm not sure what's causing the issue for you if you still can't find your original things

When I first turned on the PC in the morning and saw the temporary profile, at first I thought I caught a virus that plays with windows settings, paradoxically the day before I did several hours of working on a PC with important files. By the way, do not panic if after you restart your computer (with method 2) & your computer is stuck on "preparing windows and to not shut your computer down." Just shut your computer down, and open it again. Everything should be back to normal. :)

I just got really lucky- this happened to me, but the issue resolved when I turned the computer off and on again. I literally had to create a completely new profile and transfer all of my files to it, sucks but I didn’t know what else to do since i watched like every video on this topic and all of them said the same stuff and none of it worked.
yeah, i had my computer for three years, this happened last week. i’ve been trying to fix it everyday and nothings worked. depressing and lost most stuff
@@jackr4980 yeah, I have had my computer for literally over 8 years. But I didn't lose anything because I transfered ALL of my files over from the temp profile to a new one which became my actual profile. I did this by going to my files and copying everything, if nothing is there check your recycling bin. Then change accounts and paste all of the files over in the files of the new profile. That's what I did and my profile is the exact same as my old one, other than the fact that my saved tabs aren't there anymore.
It’s the fourth or fifth time this has happened for me, the other times my friends dad was able to help, but this time I was over it and looked into it. It’s annoying to say the least.
Thank you for your help and this video. My wife's desktop computer ( somewhat infrequently used and updated ) just got hit with this blank profile. Everything vanished for her overnight, I suspected a blank profile but did not know how to fix it. This is the first time in >30 years with windows for us, that this has happened ... and I am extremely thankful for you posting this video and google pointing me to it. I would like to point out that we did step one, changing the 1 to 0 and windows update; but then faced black screen for 10-15 minutes, decided to force shut down, then recovered the windows installation and the desktop came back to normal. What a relief.

There was a Windows 10 update this morning (2023-09-15). Left it updating while eating breakfast ... WHAT HAPPENED! Try this ... Try that, but nothing worked. Internet search and nothing worthwhile till I found your video ... Thank you. MS should have this info available, yet you are the one who saved my 'life' ... Option 1 worked flawlessly. Thank you.

One quick other fix I found when refcount value change doesn't work: 1.Go to your drive directory. 2. Go to Users folder. 3. Find the Profile you are using and type down or remember the name of the folder 4. On the Regedit. Click the profile folder that has a refcount into it. 5. Then modify the Profileimagepath. 6. Rename the TEMP-temporary file code- on the file path like this: C:\Users\(your actual profile folder) (IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE IT IS THE PROFILE YOU ARE USING, CAUSE IF NOT IT WILL LOAD ANOTHER PROFILE OR WON'T LOAD ANY PROFILE AT ALL. TYPE IN THE VERY EXACT NAME OF THE PROFILE FOLDER YOU ARE USING.) Then after that restart your PC or laptop and it will be fixed.
I can only say thank you for this, I had a mini heart attack when it happened to me, all sorted now. Stay blessed. By the way, the first method worked for me!
HELL YEAH. This fixed it. I haven’t used my computer in months and then I go to use it and everything was gone. Everything was super slow. Followed the tutorial to investigate the problem and it was exactly like the video.

I did the same as he said. I removed the one profile and then renamed the other by removing .bak but it didn't work out for me. Please help.

I literally had to create a completely new profile and transfer all of my files to it, sucks but I didn’t know what else to do since i watched like every video on this topic and all of them said the same stuff and none of it worked.
yeah, i had my computer for three years, this happened last week. i’ve been trying to fix it everyday and nothings worked. depressing and lost most stuff
@@jackr4980 yeah, I have had my computer for literally over 8 years. But I didn't lose anything because I transfered ALL of my files over from the temp profile to a new one which became my actual profile. I did this by going to my files and copying everything, if nothing is there check your recycling bin. Then change accounts and paste all of the files over in the files of the new profile. That's what I did and my profile is the exact same as my old one, other than the fact that my saved tabs aren't there anymore.

It’s the fourth or fifth time this has happened for me, the other times my friends dad was able to help, but this time I was over it and looked into it. It’s annoying to say the least.

My wife's desktop computer ( somewhat infrequently used and updated ) just got hit with this blank profile.
Everything vanished for her overnight, I suspected a blank profile but did not know how to fix it. This is the first time in >30 years with windows for us, that this has happened ... and I am extremely thankful for you posting this video and google pointing me to it.
I would like to point out that we did step one, changing the 1 to 0 and windows update; but then faced black screen for 10-15 minutes, decided to force shut down, then recovered the windows installation and the desktop came back to normal.

One quick other fix I found when refcount value change doesn't work:
1.Go to your drive directory.
2. Go to Users folder.
3. Find the Profile you are using and type down or remember the name of the folder
4. On the Regedit. Click the profile folder that has a refcount into it.
5. Then modify the Profileimagepath.
6. Rename the TEMP-temporary file code- on the file path like this:
C:\Users\(your actual profile folder)
(IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE IT IS THE PROFILE YOU ARE USING, CAUSE IF NOT IT WILL LOAD ANOTHER PROFILE OR WON'T LOAD ANY PROFILE AT ALL. TYPE IN THE VERY EXACT NAME OF THE PROFILE FOLDER YOU ARE USING.)
Then after that restart your PC or laptop and it will be fixed.

This fixed it.
I haven’t used my computer in months and then I go to use it and everything was gone.
Everything was super slow.
Followed the tutorial to investigate the problem and it was exactly like the video.
