    I love how Tim still has time to lecture his sister on dinosaurs in the middle of a life or death situation, Young Grant in the making, he's better in the book than he is in the film in my opinion but still likeable

    • @BadassHater1

      Probably because Spielberg knew that making Tim like novel Lex would've been worse than just making him a dino nerd. Well there WAS one moment when he acted stupid - the control room scene where instead of helping Grant and Sattler by giving them a shotgun he decided to....pound the chair his sister was sitting in.

    I love Chricton's style of interrupting/breaking the continuity of the flow like how Grant was thinking where to shoot and then the T.Rex interrupts his thoughts with his roar at 04:48.
    He does this all throughout the novel and in some instances it further intensifies the suspense and horror of the scene, like in the Raptor pen.

  • @oscarstainton
    @oscarstainton 5 лет назад +204

    In retrospect, the T. rex hunting Grant and the kids on a river definitely has shades of the finale of Jaws, with Bruce tearing The Orca apart. Crichton probably had Spielberg in the back of his mind.
    I'm glad that a version of it, of sorts, made it into JP3 with the Spinosaurus River Attack, but damn the book had a supremely entertaining and suspenseful first pass at it. I think Spielberg made the right choice for the film, from a budget and production standpoint, as it would have been too ambitious for the time.

    • @gustaf3811
      @gustaf3811 4 года назад +4

      Spielberg didn't only do it because of the budget, this surely have been done with CGI and would not be too costly.
      However Spielberg wanted some realism which is why you see a Spino which is an aquatic animal rather then a T-rex because everyone knows they could not swim.

    Ah, the river scene.
    When reading the book, THIS was the scene I wanted the most to be in the movie. Sure, some other bits from the books I wish made it into their film adaptations, but this moment would be my top pick for the original movie and the Carnotaurus moment for The Lost World.
    It's a very entertaining moment, and uses that whole 'you can't see under water from the surface' fear. It also would have been cool to see the T-Rex swim like a crocodile as was described in the book.
    Now, I am aware this ALMOST made it into the film how I can't remember why off the top of my head. However, still glad to see this inspire a level in the Genesis game and even the official Jurassic Park Ride!

    • @adrianposkonka8331

    Imagine this as the opening sequence to JW3 with some random people going rafting in the wilderness where the Rex is hanging out. But instead of them drifting away as the Rex gets distracted, he comes up right under them and it cuts to the title sequence.

    I personally like the stampede scene. The raft scene is quite common in your videos.
    Also why were Lex and Tim's ages switched?
    You know the juvenile would have been interesting to see as well.

    • @KomradeDoge
      @KomradeDoge 3 месяца назад

      I think the ages were switched for the movie for the same reason they swapped Hammond to being a loving grandfather who cared about his staff in the movie, it simply fit better for the story they wanted to tell. I think they just wanted one of the kids to be more mature than either was in the book, and decided Lex was the better of the 2 for that to be.

    It makes me wonder if T-Rexes could swim or they just walked through the water. Also now that you mention crocodiles, there were prehistoric crocodiles as well. They were said to be mega huge and one of them were featured in the Lost World arcade.

  • @mandalorianhunter1

    Finding out T-Rex's can actually swim makes this scene so crazy because it in a sense, its not science fiction.
    You would think that this scene from the book would be another one Jurassic Park's not based in reality exploit.

    • @iainmawhinney8867
      @iainmawhinney8867 5 лет назад

      i think T-Rex would swim more with its feet like a duck, Spinosaurus in real life had a tail better-adapted for croc-style swimming and there are theropod footprints showing one that kicked to swim (i need to look up the source article again)

    • @critterfreek83
      @critterfreek83 4 года назад

      @@iainmawhinney8867 Interesting. And even birds without webbed feet can still be surprisingly good swimmers if need be. When I was a boy, I had two classmates who lived on a farm where among other things, their family raised both free-range chickens and ducks. To prevent the always ravenous chickens from hogging the duck's food at feeding time, the ducks would be fed pellets on a wooden platform in the farm pond, which had a ramp leading up to it. Well, as I saw for myself, while most of the chickens stayed on dry land and ate their own food, there were always several chickens which wanted the duck pellets so badly that they'd actually jump into the water, swim the four yards or so to the feeding platform, climb the ramp, and help themselves, lol! While they swam more slowly than the ducks, and rested fairly often, the chickens still made out pretty well with only their thin toes as paddles.

But I still enjoy this chapter with rexy acting like a crocodile. The young rex coming back to eat the fresh food is surprising when rexy chases the juvenile off .

    One of my favorite scenes in the novel, by far. A major pity that it didn't end up in the movie, but I understand that there were legit concerns about being able to pull it off technology wise.
    Oh, and you know what's even more chilling? In the Sunderban mangroves of Bangladesh, man-eating tigers are still very much a thing. Now and again, these tigers have been seen to slip into the water and pursue people in canoes/on wooden rafts as the occupants wildly try to paddle away, like a dog chasing a dirt bike-or like the rex going after the rubber raft. Not a fun place to be.

    5:18 I like this scene cause it shows the Trex is still animal not a monster, it’s out to survive not kill and predators in the wild don’t want to a challenge when hunting they want easy prey to avoid injury. So when it’s big meal is about to be taken away it goes into rage mood.

    Listened to this book on Audible recently. Hearing this part gave me so much anxiety, would have much preferred to see this in the movie rather than the running herd. The suspense from getting into the boat quietly to the hopelessness that Grant fears they ares screwed no matter what, because as soon as they reach the shore, the Trex has them for sure. This could have been one of the most terrifying scenes in cinema, even if it was done in broad day light

    I recently read the original novel (Thanks for the gift, Mom!) And I loved it, despite the different atmospheres, both the novel and the movie were fantastic in their own right. However, one of the things I like about the film over the book was how they depicted the children. Rather than Tim having all the 'useful' qualities (both the computer smarts and the dinosaur know-how), they divided it up and gave both the kids traits that could help them and others. Lex was still a scared girl, but she diverted attention to herself when her brother was going to be found by the Velociraptors and her computer skills allowed the survivors to escape. Tim was a young boy, but he was still in wonder of the dinosaurs (even after the Main Road attack) and learned from watching his sister that he could trick the Velociraptors and was integral to locking up one of them in the freezer. Neither of them really felt like The Load, unlike poor Lex in the book.
