  • Hay Everyone!
    I'm so glad to finally get to share a more full form of my thoughts on Terry's Character in The Dragon Prince! This will probably become a series where I look at the characters, probably not be able to cover everything, but give an insight into what makes them work ...or not. Terry is for me a perfect example of missed world building. He suffers from many problems as a character, but of course, you can still like him.
    One thing I think he does amazingly, and I didn't talk about here, because it's for another time, is representing diversity!
    I hope that you can enjoy today's video, and any feedback is much appreciated!
    Also, let me know what other characters you'd want me to cover in this way!

    I 100% agree with everything you said. Before watching this, i thought that when Terry killed the elf, it was a really good scene to show what he was willing to do for Claudia. Now, i do definitely see why that didn't work at all. I did always think his character was written in a way that didn't make much sense, but now i see why. I just think his jokes are funny, but that doesn't mean they are good in relation to the plot. Awesome video!

      Thank you so much! I'm glad you can relate, I still think it's fine to really like his character obv, but this was also meant for ppl who thought he wasn't quite there but couldn't put their finger on why that is.
      I'm really glad you liked it though!

    you bring up an interesting point about the villain team needing to be more stoic and serious at times. I personally love the fact that they are very much portrayed as people, not every villain is a sauron or a voldemort, most of the time, a good villain thinks they are the hero (they don't all need to be thanos either but very few good villains see themselves as evil). Having these villains be more care free really helps with that for me.
    All that said, i do think you point still applies, not to claudia for me, but to aaravos. they took away a good bit of mystery vibes from him and even inside season 3, started making him a bit more goofy. that is really not how i imagined him to be and doesn't fit well with what we know his story to be so far.
    In season 4 they even updated his design to have softer and rounder features, making him look even less dangerous. I think that claudia and her gang being goofy silly people would be a lot more fine if aaravos was felt looming over them more, because claudia and viren aren't the villains, they too are victims of aaravos.
    All that said, i for sure coudl do without the fart jokes... no idea how that got past a first draft of literally any script..

    • @TheGlowingHay
      @TheGlowingHay  2 месяца назад +2

      Honestly good point. I think the main difference is that you need to still retain a certain level of threat. Thanos was the hero in his eyes, but he presented a threat throughout, even surpassing the movies. I agree Aaravos should definitely be that Thanos level threat, but just as the Maw was also threatening and not just going out to buy coffee, the "followers" of Aaravos should make us feel that threat, and give us a sense of urgency for the heroes to actually win. I think letting them be human is definitely not a bad thing though.
      And yes, I wonder how quite a few things managed to get past ...any draft of the script 😄

    You mentioning how the villain group feels more like "A family outing to end the world" is something I haven't thought about yet, but you're completely right. Im hoping Claudia will play more into her villain role in S6(even though I love her and was hoping for a redemption arc like Soren at first, Ive given up on that idea for the MOST part)

    Did you know that all the earthblood elves lore we got aren't from the earth season?
    Some elves bend the earth and some got crystallise and lava powers and there's a whole druid elf type that can control the nature and transform into animals and a fungus magic and suddenly none of this are in the earth season it's just in the Wikipedia. earth magic is literary the second deepest power

      Yeaaa but it technically doesn't "exist" until it actually does in the show. The same way they could write that Aaravos breathes out cosmic storms, ...it wouldn't matter until we actually have anything at all that actually makes that a thing. I understand it's still a part of the theoretical lore, but yea, it sucks how little we actually got to see about them.

      @TheGlowingHay these information are actually official it's coming from callum's spell book that they sell sadly I bought it and I'm angry of the amount of information it got and not explained or seen in the show something like the light being form that some sunfire elves has it or the reality altering power from stars arcanum but we actually saw this when aaravos deleted the sun queen from existence or when he broke the looking glass but no one explained it

    Here’s my theory:
    He is considered weak but we need to take into consideration that Terry has been helping Claudia through all of S4 and S5, Claudia would've died if it wasn't for Terry killing Ibis and they would've never gotten the staff, thus not leading to the chrysalis opening. Maybe Claudia is just using Terry for his nice nature and manipulating him, similar to Aaravos because, in the flashback scene, before Aaravos possessed Callum when we could see him whispering into a king's ear, for a split second he was whispering into Claudia’s ear hinting that he's manipulating Claudia and making her this monster and thus she is also manipulating Terry. Viren does not like Terry and doesn't understand why Claudia would date him. Maybe he is just a stepping stone in Claudia’s plan. She had probably met Terry during that adventure in which she did the spell to revive her dad for 30 days. Terry’s character just seems to be manipulated by Claudia, but the evidence against this theory is that when Rayla was threatening to kill Terry in the escape from Umbor Tor she looked genuinely scared, but she could also be doing this because Terry is a part of her plan and helping Claudia get closer to the World of Xadia. He’s also saved Claudia from dragons multiple times so it’s clear thatt he cares about her but Claudia might not care for him. In Season 6 we might honestly see Terry converting to the good side because he's uncomfortable with what Claudia is doing and he openly expresses that. In my opinion, Terry’s character is crucial as he is a part of Claudia’s plan but at the same time he is just a stepping stone for Claudia’s plan.

    • @TheGlowingHay
      @TheGlowingHay  2 месяца назад +2

      Yea no he definitely seems like ...a stepping stone, but I just wish he was a character for himself. That he stood out by himself. Like Soren was also just a path to get what Viren wanted, and he turned good, but he was his own character, we got to connect to him outside of him being a pawn. I wonder if they'll make Terry good as well, would be very interesting to see how they do it!

    • @Phantom-pv5th
      @Phantom-pv5th 2 месяца назад

      @@TheGlowingHay honestly, maybe it's just like Soren’s character Terry knows that what Claudia is doing is bad and he is disturbed by it when Soren leaves to join the good side in Season 3 after realizing how evil Viren is. Now that Viren is probably dead because it was his last day in the final episode of Season 5, Terry will realize the consequences of Claudia’s action and probably join the good side leaving Claudia by herself to free Aaravos and basically to destroy the world, also Season 6 is about Stars and Aaravos so wouldn't be surprised if he gets unleashed in season 6. Honestly, Terry will become his own characterin season 6 if he leaves Claudia.

      @TheGlowingHay  2 месяца назад

      @Phantom-pv5th I hope so for sure. I wish he was his own character for the two seasons before, they managed to do it with Soren, it's sad they didn't carry that on with Terry. I hope that he does become his own character next season for sure though! I'd love to see that

    • @TheMrPeteChannel
      @TheMrPeteChannel 2 месяца назад +1

      There's another reason why Terry could be with Claudia. Terry is Trans & was born " a doe ". He always felt he was " a buck ". Maybe Claudia said "If you help me save my dad I can help you with a spell to become fully male." Or said that Aaravos can do it. The VA is also trans & confirmed Terry is becoming fully male.

      @TheMrPeteChannel oh yea no absolutely, I know Terry is trans and I think representation is TDPs strong suit! I guess it could be, but again, we've never heard anything even remotely in that direction that that would be the reason. It would be quite nice though!

  • @owlmage2744
    @owlmage2744 29 дней назад +3

    I think a way to help Terrys character is to dive into his backstory, and the question of "Why is an ELF dating a power hungry human that wants to take over his HOMELAND?"
    Maybe he was raised in some kind of cult-ish home or village that supported the idea of Dark Magic(Why? I don't know, but it could give us a deep dive into dark magic too)
    I can see his morals being all over the place, we can see he was destroyed after killing another elf, but he seems to be fine with Claudia doing awful things.
    As said in the video, it's too late to rewrite the season but I don't think its too late for Terrys character if its done well, and god I HOPE that they do it well- Maybe they can give us that dive into his backstory, maybe make him rethink a few things and work through things about his home and the way he was raised(probably there were some issues there, I hope so) and hopefully end up as a more stable character with an actual drive, a backstory, more- TERRY, all that fun stuff!

    • @TheGlowingHay
      @TheGlowingHay  28 дней назад

      Yes exactly! I think there's a lot they can still do with him, and I really hope they cover it in the next season. Maybe make both Claudia and Terry reflect on their past, and how it shaped their present. That way they could tie in books like the Puzzle house into the show itself.
      I think it can't really change the poor writing in the previous seasons, buuut it can at least salvage the character and give him more ...reason to be there. And he could become a really interesting and deep character!

    Claudia isn't exactly a villain. She's an antagonist. Her motives are opposed to the protagonists, but not really evil. Her goal is to save her dad and avoid the pain of loss. She goes to extremes, but so did Harrow.
    I think it is intentional that Terry shares an emotional connection and goofy sense of humor, rather than a pragmatic goal. Terry brings out the real Claudia in a way even Soren rarely could.
    Claudia's character is driven by a need for connection, but it's unstable because it's founded in the fear of loss. She hasn't felt secure in her own family and home. I expect Terry will be the foundation for a more rooted attachment, and a deeper exploration of earth magic to come in the next chapter.
    I think there's an overarching theme of connection vs pragmatism. With the narrative falling strongly on the side of connection centered morality. There's also a theme of perception creating reality. There's a repeated motif of characters having different versions of the same situation: Soren and Claudia's secret missions, the architect and the grieving son. The inciting historical conflict also has multiple versions scattered through different official media. That may be intentional as the audience has to actively seek out truth from multiple sources and interpret them with understanding of the character/narrator's perspective in order to understand how they fit together.
    I think the set up is there for a conclusion that will tie it all up in a way that will recontextualize everything we know. Of course, that all depends on whether it pays off.

    • @TheGlowingHay
      @TheGlowingHay  2 месяца назад

      Oh wow! That is definitely a very interesting way of looking at things. I agree that you could definitely analyse them in this way, I think it just would be weird if that was the intention, since 99% of people won't go into it that deep. And the show still has to "function" on a very basic level. It's true that she isn't a villain so to speak, but that's kinda the problem... without stakes, the audience doesn't really care. It's hard to get invested when nothing feels genuinely important. I'm really intrigued by your analysis though! Thank youA

    • @nezumired
      @nezumired 2 месяца назад

      @TheGlowingHay
      I think it works, but not necessarily as a traditional hero's journey. The resolution is less about defeating the BBEG than unraveling the tangle of false beliefs and getting everyone on the same page. For me, it all goes back to Harrow's letter and the "great lie of history".

    • @TheGlowingHay
      @TheGlowingHay  2 месяца назад

    Terry needed to be either way more overtly evil/callous to what Claudia was doing, or more vocally resistant to the things she tried to do. He ain't a vegan,he knows animals eat other animals,death is just a natural part of life etc. In other words,he would offer a different perspective that other characters in the show haven't had because either one side "worships" it or the other side thinks "it's eternally evil all the time no matter what". I think that Terry could be an interesting character but got wasted. Terrys character is incomplete. We spend two seasons with him and I feel like I learned nothing about him.
    Terry is a earthbound elf but aside of some spells it is not story relevant. He could be any other elf and the story won't change.
    We don't know anything about of his past. He came of out of nowhere. What is his motivation? Why is he with Claudia? All questions worth exploring.

  • @supremeoverlorde2109

    Terry has grown on me, but I think he's more a product of his function than he is a character. And his function is solely to exist as Claudia's last shred of light. While we don't know a lot about him, we do know that he has a genuinely good heart and that he truly loves Claudia. In some ways, I kind of feel sorry for him because I think he's going to have to come to the realization that he can't fix her --- or end up becoming a victim.
    Having Terry murder Ibis so early in season 4 was kind of an odd choice to me, because it happened pretty much right after we met him. I already didn't understand this character or have any inkling of whether I could trust him --- so him killing Ibis made me predisposed to NOT trusting him. It was only later that I started to realize... oh, this is just a really lonely elf who is clinging to someone self-destructive because he has no one else and she makes him feel accepted. But even that wasn't established clearly and I think is probably somewhat up to interpretation --- I gleaned it off his conversations with Viren, especially the one about his childhood and about being trans.
    I'm honestly really curious to see what they do with Terry... because based on what we've seen it looks like Claudia may be about to push him away or turn on him this season like she has done to pretty much everyone else. Is he going to keep trying? Is he gonna realize he can't save her and start working against her? So far he seems to have no real investment in the whole end of the world thing --- or perhaps he doesn't have the full picture of what's going on. But it's not like he's interacted with any other characters, so I really have no idea if they're actually planning anything for him or if they'll just sideline the character. It just goes to show how little relevance he's actually had aside from being Claudia's follower.

    • @TheGlowingHay
      @TheGlowingHay  19 дней назад +1

      Absolutely! For me it sadly didn't quite reach the point where he grew on me, but seeing how much he seemingly is suffering in that relationship, and knowing how easy it is for someone like that to feel the need to do anything for the other person, because it's like the first person you have, and want to be with, and you don't want to lose them for anything... but yea, the lack of any self respect, while very relatable, I just wish I understood where it came from... but yea, I don't think as harshly about him as I did the first time.
      I'm super excited to see what they do with him. Seeing him in the Trailer only worries me more for him, and I think we're getting to the point of him realising how self destructive his behaviour and relationship with Claudia is.
      If he manages to free himself from that, or claudia starts treating him better through him standing up for himself.
      Glad to hear your thoughts though!
