      Hello Patrick :)
      15 years I use only .Win :)
.. and I don't know how I will get along with this operating system in macbook. but I decided to purchase.
am also wondering which laptop to buy. Whether it is AIR M 2 16 GB 256 GB SSD / or M2 Pro 16 GB 256 GB. I will use it mainly for browsing, but I work with many tabs.
they say that: when you work a long time on it. it starts to heat up, and loses performance.
also said: For browsing with 15-20 tabs. 8 GB of RAM is very little and it is good that it is at least 16 GB (for browsing in Chrome)
Can I get how things stand with you and your opinion if you have practice while working.
I watched the video and more videos, but I still can't figure out about multitasking - browsing which model would be better
I like air because it's light. and the display is slightly larger
      congratulations: George

I was having trouble deciding between the two so I bought both and tested them out for two weeks. In the end, I returned the pro because it was heavy and the display differences weren’t as drastic as I thought they’d be. I love promotion on my phone but barely noticed it on the computer. Display was a little bit brighter but really didn’t matter. Battery life on the air was better. Strangely enough, I preferred typing on the air over the pro as well. Since I don’t need it for video editing or high intense tasks beyond manipulating large files in excel, the air made the most sense for me. Great video!

Decided to get the air. Way cheaper. Most people don’t need those specs and don’t need the ports considering we probably already have all those dongles. Only reason to get the pro IMO is for heavy cpu usage which in that case I’d recommend the 16 because it handles temperature better. I thought best thing is to stick with the air and if I outgrow it, consider an upgrade from there. Especially when the 14 mbp is about a 50 percent increase for little difference in day to day usage. Why use your laptop for high quality videos when most people watch media on a tv. If you’re considering purchasing a mbp I’m sure you have money or already own a nice TV

M2 14/16 MBP models coming in next 45 days will not be that much more performant, so getting the $400 savings for the 14in M1 Pro MBP is a killer deal. I went with the base model M2 Air for these reasons : 1) It's my 1st Mac. 2) My use case scenario involve only for office work, and content consumption 3) I could have gone for the way cheaper M1 but I prefer the new design and that feeling of owning something newer, I'm sure you know what I mean 🙂.
I did try edit iphone videos on some common apps (I cannot afford and will not spend that much for Final Cut Pro) and it performs well.
Gaming is somehow not as smooth as in the iPad (on some games), probably because of compatibility since this is a new chip. Some games from steam do make the laptop heats quickly (but expect this on both Air models).
I think based on your use case scenario you would know where to draw the line and this video helps much much more in that decision making. I came to a conclusion that if base model is a no no because you need faster SSD, more space and more RAM, then the Macbook Air is not for you. Sorry for the long comment 😀

For the past 3 months I've been saving up for a spec'd out 16" MBP w/ the highest M1 Pro. The Max isn't much more when you're in this price range but I'd rather trade in more power for more power, battery power that is. I'm not gonna utilize the extra GPU cores, heck I'd be fine with an entry level M1 Pro but I want a little more wiggle room for a relatively small amount extra. I'm also just gonna get 4TB which will be plenty. I could settle for 2TB but again I want a little wiggle room. I haven't been excited for an Apple product like this since the iPhone X and the 27" 5K iMac.

I currently own 15" - which never leaves my desk, its huge bulky 2kg brick. 13" - which is of the same form, size and weight as M1 PRO, and even this 13" for me is overkill to travel with. M2 air finally seems like an acceptable option. I sincerely hope, that future machines will go below 1kg, closer to .7, maybe .5 with new thermally conductive polymers. It's not as simple as get the MBP because of the price is similar. Priority in a laptop is user experience and portability. If you could have the MBA form factor with MBP performance you would go for it. Some people might prioritize the convenience of the MBA but spend the extra money to upgrade it. Still is gonna be an extremely fast machine but thin and light. So, when you spec a MBA to a similar price to the MBP it doesn't mean that you should go for the MBP. It depends on what everyone considers as a priority. And remember, M2 is newer than M1 (M1 pro, etc) it has a higher clock speed and single core performance. Single core performance is the most usual property of a computer to feel snappy and fast, for example opening up apps. Also, it makes the browsing experience faster as well. Yes, M2 MBA is "faster" in web browsing than M1 MBP. Things that in 3-4 years time the MBP would be kind of outdated compared to the M2 MBA. Yes it's faster rendering, exporting, compiling, but point is, it doesn't mean that you should go for it because of the price. Choose your preferred form factor and spec it as you like. If you can get away with the thinner lighter machine, do it.

Just upgraded from a 2015 15" full spec MBP. I went with the M1 Pro because I got mine on sale at Best Buy for $1600. Considering that's $100 cheaper than the M2 Air with the same amount of RAM, storage, and upgraded GPU, it was a no brainer. Better performance in productivity for coding and video editing for me, better screen with ProMotion, has a fan so it runs cooler and can handle more sustained loads, can dock and use with multiple displays. For me the size was already about a pound less and about 2 inches narrower so it's already better than the 2015 15" in terms of portability that it just made no sense splurging for the Air for a less capable computer. I am in love with my M1 Pro, so if you can get the M1 Pro on sale like I did or don't mind buying refurbished I recommend it unless you really love the thin and light design or don't need a ton of performance, in which case I'd honestly recommend the M1 Air since it's so much cheaper.

Good overview as always. One factor that strongly pushed me to the M2 was the absence of fans. I am so tired of the fans always spinning up on my 2020 MBP. I’m a businessman and use web, emails and office apps. Not much creative stuff at all. The M2 MBA is smoking fast and even runs office on windows through Parallels without any hiccups. Something my 2020 MBP Intel chip couldn’t do. Now I don’t open up huge Excel files, but again, it’s plenty fast. Since I travel a lot, the lower weight and slimmer form factor is key as well. We have reached an age of computing where people don’t need to always get the most processing power. The M2 is plenty for the average person, it’s not just for students.

    • @KeithCole
      @KeithCole 2 года назад +2

I should make one clarification on my Parallels/Windows comment. I did spring for 16GB of memory. I was worried about too much memory swap while running windows. With 16GB, my memory pressure is never high/red. I’d be curious to see a comparison of the M2 8 and 16 on that issue. I’d also like to see a review of how often the fans run when doing normal stuff and how loud they are. My expectation is that the MBP fans are not as noisy as the Intel models, but are they still generally noisy in normal use or just when rendering (which a lot of people who buy Macs don’t do).

The M2 in general does get warmer than the M1 Air I upgraded from on some of the basic tasks. I chose the MacBook Pro M1 base model because my previous Air was the same and performance was better for some programs. But the cost of the M2 Air here in Canada to the M1 Pro with student pricing and 210 Apple gift card was just under 300 dollars? This was a no brainer for performance and I think resale as I tend to upgrade every 3 years or so. The only issue I see is the battery life which is about 10 to 12 hours but always gets me thru a work day. the Air would too though. the display and speakers more than make up the 300 dollar price difference for sure.

Great comparison. I’d also add that the Mini LED screen is a hit and miss and very dependent on your preferences. While it obviously has darker blacks (all black), it also has blooming and unevenly lit edges. Plus lag when scrolling, with very slow blooming effects especially with white on black backgrounds. So the Pro Motion won’t help you when the LED backlights are so slow in themselves. Plus it has some PWM screen flicker, while the M2 is flicker free. All that means it’s a no go for me.

Glad you’re not noticing it, but those who do notice it find it very irritating (and in terms of PWM, very headache and eye strain inducing to the point of being unusable). It’s just to how LED screen works, there’s not getting away from it. An LED can only be on or off, so quick flicker is the only way to darken or lighten a screen. Not to be confused with refresh rate, which is something different (that’s about how often the pixels refresh). And LED backlights by definition create blooming as there are not as many backlights as there are pixels on the screen. So you will get blooming when one LED lights up many pixels, not just the one it’s supposed to. You can clearly see it if you scroll and have white on black background. See the videos.

@@kiwi.kiwi. I am a web developer and honestly, I have no issues with my M1 Air. It’s stupidly fast and I never felt it got hot in my months of usage. My recommendation is to see what you are going to do with it. My Air is mainly for on-the-go coding and everything else is done at home on my Linux desktop.
Honestly even compiling code won’t be an issue. Might be slower on the Air but it’s not a huge deal. Personally, I would get a 16GB Air.

Another great vide Patrick! Really enjoyed your "people need to chill" one :) I went with 8/8/24/512 and as a software developer, coming from 16" i7 I couldn't be happier. The style, weight and midnight color was my main reasons to go with M2. It feels like iPad Pro but its a laptop. Is ridiculously fast. Another bonus is passive cooling and insane battery life.

to further complicate the M2 Air vs MBP14 pricing. You can easily find the MBP14 in the $1750 price range, which massively closes that price difference between the MBP14 and the M2 MBA.
I think the M2 MBA is an amazing device, its just priced too high. If you need a basic device, just get the M1 MBA which can be found at $850 easily enough. At $400 cheaper getting the M1 MBA is a no brainer. If you need a more powerful device just find the MBP14 at $1750. This is all unless you are a super specific buyer where a half a pound means something in terms of portability at which the M2 Air would be the choice.

I was conflicted about this same problem too. As a Windows user looking to buy my first MacBook, I think the M2 air is probably fine for 99% of workloads. From everything I've seen online, as long as your not compiling heavy code or doing intense 3D design there's not much use to upgrading to the M1 14" Pro. As a PhD student, I'm looking for a laptop that can handle MS office workloads, browsing, and some statistics software...which the M2 air should handle fine. I occasionally do light photo or 4k video editing but nothing at a "pro" level. Plus with the $500 dollars, I saved from the air purchase (16GB, 512ssd) compared to the 14" pro I intend on using it to buy a good wide productivity monitor. Lastly, 120 Hz really isn't all that important unless you are a gamer for which you should probably look for a windows gaming laptop.

I should add that the $500 difference is in CAD. Plus the Apple education discount was too good to not take advantage of. Excited to try MacOS for the first time, I spent hours looking for a new laptop, and found Intel or AMD can't come close to the efficiency of these new Mac machines!

I've had my first mac pro in 2017 and I loved it a lot. I saw M2 Air but after seeing few of my fave creators about it, I decided to wait until M2 Pro (hopefully coming mid Sept/early Oct) to see if it'll blow my mind. If it doesn't, I'll go with M1 Pro.

This is also where I'm stuck - currently using an Intel 2019 MBP and really waiting to see if we're about to get a new line of 14" and/or 16" MBPs w/M2 in them. Otherwise it definitely seems like the stronger variants of the M1 are a decent choice for a while.

I was also hoping for new M2 Pro’s beeing shown in October.
But then I saw no indication of that anywhere and when talking to sales people in stores, they all thought new Pro’s won’t come until 2023.
So I ordered a maxed out Air M2.

Anyone have thoughts on longevity between the two? I feel like either would work well for me, I have an old pro (2012) and it is still working, but too old to keep doing updates, safari is a no go ect. I know I can't be alone on looking to have the longer lasting option. I would lean towards the air for weight, but have a feeling the pro would outlast the air. Hubby has an air (basic) about 4 years old and I fell like my dinosaur runs better than his.Thoughts? Thanks!

You forgot the third option, which is to get a used/refurbished M1 Air. It performs better than a base model M2 Air and costs up to $1000 less, depending on the spec. If you're a casual/typical user, than it's really the best and lowest cost option, with a great combination of performance, weight, size and price. If you're going to buy an M2 Air, than you really need to get a 512 Mb SSD, and 16 Gb of RAM is preferable. But now you're basically in MBP territory on price and buying the 14" MBP makes a lot more sense for the screen, sound, ports and performance improvements. So I really don't see a good case for getting any M2 Air.

Well, well, well... here go: After using the MacBook Air 2014, 11'' for all these years, up to now 2022, and I still love it, but is time to up grade, (I do have a 27" desktop) I chose the new Air M2 because of the portability and weight, (I up graded for 16 ram, 1TB storage for better performance to editing photos and videos) I really want to like the M1 14" for exactly the pros Patrick mentioned, but once you have in your hand you will notice the M1 Pro is pretty bulky. I compromise little bit less performance vs portability. If I only have to chose ONE computer, (home use, portability, performance) the M1 14" will be the one.

Best Buy just made this a letdown decision - for Labor Day weekend the base M1 Pro MacBook Pro 14 (16gb/512gb) is $1599 while the M2 MacBook Air with 16gb/512gb is $1699. Unless you just have to have the thinner chassis, no fans, and save a 1/2lb of weight, the MacBook Pro 14 is a huge win.

$2,301.46 for a refurbish M2, 24GB, 1TB MBA with AppleCare+ and CA Tax. Only thing that would be nice is better thunderbolt, more ports, and dual desktop display. I'm happy with what it is, and traveling so much makes the slimmer profile worthwhile. I travel more often than needing two desktop screens.
