Sticking with my M1 MBA. Its still more than enough, and the best laptop I've owned.
same here, i will upgrade my M1 next 5 years
Completely agree! I'll wait at least until the Macbook Air M3
Great
Actually I'm planning to buy m2 air 16gb ram 256gb. Is it ok?
I'm buy as I need not much storage, only run Android projects that's why.
Is it's okay?
or Can I go with M1 air 16/512gb that I decided before M2?
@jason franklin how do you do this
Thanks for the comparison. I agree if I already had a M1 Air it probably wouldn't make sense to upgrade but since I am upgrading from my now 7 year old MBP I went ahead and spent the extra $$ and ordered the M2 Air
Thanks!
Yours was the video that helped me to decide to go for the M1 vs the M2. I really wanted the gold color, but was afraid I'd be sacrificing too much in terms of long-term daily-use performance (no rendering) and features. Seems to not be the case! Thank you, now I can get the color I actually wanted without worry ^^
Hi, I only use iMovie for my vlogs and do subtitles sometimes... I don't even game.... Will the m2 256 gb variant work fine with me?
I still prefer the wedge shaped MBA, it was the main differentiating factor in terms of design between Pro & Air. I will stick with my M1 MBA.
I know Jony’s old designs for the Pro and Air caused the keyboard and ports issues but those really are very good designs. People looking at it side by side wouldn’t think the new M2 is thinner without measure them. At first look the wedged shape one looks “thinner”
I still Love the wedge shaped macbook 😭👐
Dude what normal person would upgrade his Macbook so frequently or even consider doing so? Are all the people here earning money with Macbooks? Then they should have just bought a pro model I guess
@@RUclipsr_YusukeFromGermanyApple fans are wasteful AF. Wouldn't make a difference if they got a Pro, they'd still be comparing it to next year's pro.
To avoid the slow ssd, you’ll need to upgrade to 512gb. That’s $1,399 US. A new M1 MBA can be had for $850 US new. This machine isn’t $599 better.
So that means the base mba m1 is better than base mba m2?
@@jfjjfjx4613 If the argument is that no one is doing anything really taxing on a Macbook Air, I would say it is.
@@jimgessner6071 So for my girlfriend who will be doing mainly college stuff (lots of tabs in chrome, word processors, maybe power point and some video recording/minor editing) M1 base model would be more than enough? She has an external SSD as well so I'm looking purely at 256gb models, however I'm still torn on whether to splurge on extra ram. Bear in mind 90% of the time the mac will be on a stand connected to a monitor with a separate mkb setup.
The 512GB M1 MBA is not 850 what are you smoking?
@@Yogi5D I didn’t say the 512gb M1 MBA is $850. The base model with 256gb can be found for $850.
These comparisons are great and give a very good sense on how they overall perform. However, a lot of Mac users are developers. It'd be great if we could have some programming applications and tests to see if we should try this new laptop or not.
Unfortunately, most RUclipsrs just look at their use cases. Final cut Pro and video encoding. Their world end there.
I predict a lot of open box, midnight versions on sale come August. That colour is amazing but if it damages so easily, people will be very unhappy.
agree.....like the color but perhaps a lot of open box base models for a discount will be at Best Buy or Mac store
Wedge shape of M1 makes it much better for wrists comfort. M2 is really disappointing in terms of ergonomics (notch, no wedge)
I hate the wedge shape it looks really outdated looking
@@jorgenvonstrangle4725 The comfort outweighs the look. M2 vs M1 air is like 5 steps forward, 3 steps backward
@@qui11 but that's just your opinion mate?
Just ordered my M1 for college cause it was more within my price range and definitely excited it still holds its own against the newer one
People forget it’s literally a top of the line laptop which is only 3 years old lmfao. Ofcourse it’s going to be good
Two years now using and M1. Prefer it more then new one. Always prefer the older models.
why
@@Alactic M1 is seriously a HUGE upgrade from Intel, and M1 to M2 there isn't any real value to upgrade even for the more heavy users
I personally think if you have no MacBook, then go M2, but if you have M1. There is no value.
@@Alactic cos that’s what I have. I do have experienced a m2
Thanks so much for an awesome video, your production is amazing. Quickly: m2 camera: clearer, improved colors. Audio: noticeably clearer while using camera. Video: clearer and brighter display. M2 generally better performance for applications where buying an Air makes sense. Higher intensity uses - buy a MBP.
I really would like to have a comparison between the M2 Air and the 14” M1 Pro
14” M1 Pro is probably leagues better in terms of consistent high performance and heavy workloads. MBAs are just meant for light work and have a better screen and cam
why? There are various videos comparing m1 air to m1 pros. You then can know the Performance difference between m1 air and m1 xpro. Then you have the videos comparing m1 air to m2 air. You know the increase in Performance from m1 to m2 airs so just apply that difference when viewing m1 air vs m1 pros videos.
14" is better, simple as that. Why a comparison?
@@zaid4785 Yeah agreed
@@expogames7880 I mean, isn't it in a youtuber's best interest to make as many videos that cover as many topics as possible to capture the most views? Even if it isn't needed, there's people looking for it, so why not capitalize on that?
Watching comparison of a laptop I can't afford
I actually love the traditional look of the MBA compare to the new one, and how low it feels on the palms when typing.
Unless the M1 air was equally as new out of the box, the battery cell degradation must be accounted for. The m2 isn’t worth the upgrade.
I disagree. As a content creator the added horsepower will be really useful.
@@waynesworldofsci-tech That horsepower is few seconds. Not really useful if you're not doing pro res rendering

Does starlight have scufifng issues?
All the M2 MBP and MBA base models are held back by the slow ssd and thermal throttling issues. Doesn't matter how good the chip is. Like putting Rolls Royce engine in a Hyundai Pony

@@jaypalmer3806 Yes I said that. But you shouldn't have to upgrade $200 to get a better machine than the two year old M1 MBA. And that's only if you know about this issue. Some sort of Advertising Standards Agency should make Apple put a sticker on it saying 'Actual less good than advertised'
I just got this Mac with M2 base config in Austria at 1099 €. It's my first Macbook and i hope it will perform good in the future. Cheers mate and good review.
Happy with my M1 Air. Definitely no need to upgrade for me.
After watching a bunch of these comparison videos I’ve come to this conclusion; if you’re new to Mac or upgrading from a 5+ year old Mac, get the M2. If you have an M1 Air, don’t upgrade
magsafe is the only factor I consider as an upgrade above M1
I still use an old 2015 MacBook Air and I'm really confused about my next step
MagSafe that's nothing to upgrade for usb c is perfect too, but but I suggest 100-200 USD is worth it to pay for m2 I am watching this on my m2 , never get the midnight colour the finger prints it gets I saw in Apple Store was so much completely avoid I got starlight and its so so beautiful colour but wanted midnight but after looking how much it get fingerprint starlight is the best option
i use the 2020 retina version and im happy :) if u wanna get a cheap one think about it.
What did you end up doing?
Im planning to upgrade my early 2015 Macbook air, and I'm not sure if I should get the M1 or the M2. M1 is appealing to me because it's definitely cheaper. While M2 is appealing to me because of the magsafe and of course future proofing.
My sister is in these exact circumstances
Well, what did you do?
I don't know how the M2 is in terms of build quality... but I bought he M1 in 2021 and have had to service it twice without drop damage
The m2 have it for one week now it is my first macbook
@@kynanverwimp847 that seems unlucky had the m1 since it came out and it’s like it’s brand new still
Daniel, I love the attention to detail, especially with the keyboard color differences, bezels, scuffing, etc. Thank you so much. 🙏🏻
TRID hi
I purchased the M2 MacBook Air and I felt like it was a rushed project. It seems delicate and screen feels a little flimsy. I ended up exchanging to for an m1 MacBook Pro 13 inch which feels much better despite the Touch Bar.
Many thanks for the great comparison. I'm grateful that I bought M1 Pro base model instead of buying a ram and storage upgraded model of M2 MacBook Air.
What size?
I was eagerly waiting for that comparison 😃
Thanks Dan
Just ordered my M2 last night in silver, excited! I went with the classic color.
Based on the scratching around that USB port after one use of it I suspect there's going to be a Paint/Scratch issue with this machine. Shame, it's a gorgeous blue but you can't dye metal and sufficient varnish to protect it would change all the tolerances around the vents/hinges/ports, beyond reliability.
Another excellent video, Daniel! I've been using an M1 12.9" iPad Pro + magic keyboard as a sorta laptop replacement setup for about a year. It's worked pretty well, but I'm ready for a real laptop as my mobile computer. The M2 Air (Midnight 16GB/512GB) is the one for me. Just gotta deal with the wait until August 3.
You've made the right decision. 16/512 is the sweet spot. You're going to love it.
I just wish you could push yourself a little bit more and bought the MacBook pro 14inch with the M1 pro chip. Now that's an amazing machine.
Late answer but I hope you chosed 8 gpu version, 10 gpu version has quick termal throttling
How was it?? 🤩
Finally some real benchmark that take the battery in consideration.
I'm positive impressed and I would like to buy the Air M2, it's a huge upgrade from my current Air 2011
this is fraud...don't trust..he wants money for delivery..beware of all these fraud things
I always love the information i get from your videos
The Logic track test doesn't say much without showing all the plugins you are running for each track and also which plugins as this will play a huge role. Just playing tracks alone without anything surely can give you over 200 tracks, but the plugins and VST's are what makes this test interesting :)
Love your vids!- but on your next video could you just hold it in different possess to get a sense of the look and feel? Maybe one where you hold it on your side, next to your hip, like you hold a book when you are walking to class. And maybe another one holding it up against your chest like a 50’s girl waiting near her locker talking about her crush… hopefully this made sense. Thank you in advance.
Thank you! I've made up my mind to go for M1 Air and will be saving $$$. M1 Air is more than enough for my PC needs.
M1 still the beast

I was able to get an open box 512 ssd 16gb m1 pro for $1000 and after seeing videos like this I’m pretty happy with the purchase
Congrats bro. You won big time.
Great price!
It is good but maybe no worth upgrading if you have the M1. It is a matter of taste but I like the ergonomics of M1 more and also the sound seems better on M1 too. Nice comparison, thanks.

My question also, hope someone will answer
I think in terms of shape you need to get one that fits the way your palm rest on your laptop, for technology , if you want faster ssd of course m1 is better , speakers are better, but I love the m2 design and I think the battery and the screen bezels make me feel like MacBook Air m2 is better

i am choosing between m2 air and m1 pro 14. price isn't an issue for me so if the macbook pro 14 inch wasn't so heavy i would've already bought it. And if the m2 air had pro motion and just as good speakers, would've already bought it.
I went w the m1 pro 14
m1 pro is worth is. 200GB/s memory bandwidth vs 100GB/s on m2. It's one of the reasons that the m1pro gpu is ~40% faster
If you have the time you could wait for the M2 Pro/Max to release. We know they are coming eventually at least
@@Doc_Sans don't have time to wait for another year sadly
update: I went for the M2 air instead (it's lighter, I like the midnight color, I don't need the extra ports or power, I got 50% off AirPods Pro because of Student discount. I will be using those mostly instead of the speakers as I live in a dorm with other college roommates. The only sad thing is I really wanted pro motion
Remember guys, companies always sets the base products withe obvious cripples for setting up the price point for their other high end products. Unless there is a competition from other/rival companies.
Very nice video straight to the point, real word testing and FINALLY some gaming performance benchmarks. Display, transfer speed, webcam quality, battery life and performance of 2.5 products (MBP too) in 13 minutes.
You did recommend to whoever owns a MacBook Air M1 that it’s not that great of a gap to switch to M2, but what about people that want to get into the world of MacOS? Do you recommend MacBook Air M1 or M2?
If you have the money get the 14” MacBook Pro on discount, otherwise get M1, don’t buy the M2, it’s a terrible value
@@mahanc1124I don’t like the pro, too heavy. I only use laptop to watch movies lol. I still have my MacBook Air from 2017 haha
I bought the M2 Air it shouldn't even be a question wich one to get ofc it will be the m2 air unless you're poor
M2 of course
I used to have the M1 macbook air and have just upgraded to the m2 air for university and I definitely don't regret it so far :) I had donated my M1 to my friend about a year ago due to her laptop dying and her needing one for work and I had a desktop I can use (desktop is currently out of commission while upgrading parts hence why I needed a new laptop)
I was seriously thinking of going for the blue…but those scuff marks around the usb c port is a DEAL BREAKER. You literally just unboxed it and already reminds me of the “ jet black” iPhone 7s. The paint just vanishes
Ain't that the truth 👍
probably not paint, but rather anodized aluminum. Regardless once it's scratched it's permanent and appearance will only get worse with more scratches and perhaps impact its resale value just like a vehicle.
Lov your review and real comparison details. You are the Best!!!
Thanks so much 😊
M1 MBP, 2 memory modules, all motor, no tuning issues.
Thanks for the great video 🤩... I would love to see how the M2 performs in terms of productivity for heavy chrome users (chrome with lots of extensions, Gmail, Google sheet, etc) when compared to the M1.
Crome destroys memory and allows Google to harvest all your data and sell it to other Companies. I can't understand why people use it.
heavy chrome user? lol...M1 is more than you'll ever need
Why use Chrome. Chrome is horrible.
If that’s all you’re looking for don’t waste your money just get a older Mac book. M series chips are the best out there
That is heavy?????
Amazing video thank you
Thanks for comparing the factors that actually matter. Very helpful and informative video
I currently have a 2017 MacBook Air and am now ready to upgrade to Apple Silicon. I think I would be fine with either the M1 or the M2 since they would both give me far better performance than I currently have, but would it be better to just go for the M2 since it’s the most recent and will last longer?
If money isn't a factor, get the M2 Air. Otherwise the M1 is phenomenal enough. Both the M1 and M2 are currently still being sold brand new from Apple so the M2 won't really last any longer.
Didn't realize your comment was from a year ago lol. Which one did you end up getting?
I’m a student that doesn’t use any photo editing apps or stuff like that. I just web browse and watch movies on RUclips and Netflix. Which do you guys think is better for me? Is the display and screen upgrade significant to be worth the extra $200? Is m2 faster for web browsing?
No. Go for M1 Air.
You should go for the M1 MacBook air. And invest that saved ($200) in other necessary stuff. M1 MacBook is powerful enough. I'm a 2017 intel MacBook user, and I use it 8-10 hours daily. I use around 25+ open tabs daily in chrome + photoshop, and web designing, so during summer time It has major heating issues, but I'm still satisfied with its performance (And it has only 2 core CPU, but M1 has 8 core, think how fast it will be) because it's been 5 five old with an intel processor MacBook air. So, I'm also going to upgrade, but I will go for the M2(because I do some heavy work), But for you definitely, the M1 MacBook air is more than enough.
Also, It's future-proof for you. I mean If you want to do some heavy work in the future, you can definitely do that.
Rest all is your choice, it's your money. Do what you want :)

I picked up the MacBook Air M1 2020 for £887 here in the UK well happy with it.
Please end those videos with: “should I upgrade if I have a MBA 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, etc”, not just the last one.
This is the best comparison i saw on youtube between the 2 MBAs
What is the recommendation if you do not own a MacBook. Should I go for the M2 or M1 air
Thanks for showing the comparison. I think the M1 model is good enough. It is not worth the extra cost to buy the M2. If you have the intel model for the Macbook air and want to upgrade, you should buy the M1 model instead of M2. M1 16GB of RAM
This was exactly what I was looking for. Much appreciated!!

Thanks for testing Logic , that’s all I wanted
I'm confused. Towards the end of this video, you say, "You shouldn't buy a MacbookAir in the first place.", while in the MacBook Air M2 vs. Macbook Pro, you don't say that at all. You actually advice buying an M2 MacBook Air if you like the design, etc. What gives?
He said “maybe if you do a lot transporting (as in travelling) then you should upgrade” then he goes on to saying “even then, you shouldn’t buy a MacBook in the first place”.
I got my M1 Air last Christmas and I can’t see myself needing to upgrade as gorgeous as the new M2 ones are. I’ve barely watched videos to resist temptation 😂
Let’s resist together 😂
Best review Thankyou
Nice comparison video. Love you from Bangladesh.
That throwing bag was personal 😌🤣
Regarding the battery, I'd say M2's battery is new so it can't be compared to M1's as it has consumed some of its capacity already.

Thank you so much! 🙏🏻
I’m weighing up the options on upgrading from my 2018 Max Book Pro to the 2022 MacBook Air.
THANK YOU!
I will be stepping up from about a six or seven year old MacBook Air so the difference should be rather dramatic. I think I’m going to go for the upgraded M2 with 16 gig ram and then upgrade to a 512 gig hard drive. That should avoid any swap issues even though I doubt I would notice. Great video as always.
if that's the case, you should consider topping a bit more of money to get 14' MBP instead
if that’s the case, you should consider topping a bit more money to get 14’ MBP instead
If that’s the case, you should consider topping up a bit more money to get the 14’ MPB instead
Picked a base model up this morning, feels plenty fast. However it depends what you are using it for
The m2 air upgraded with 16gb ram and 512gb ssd is $1579 so you may as well just get the 14" pro with the m1 pro chip, which is exactly why the m2 air is priced this way and they nickel and dime you to upgrade ram/ssd. Have to admit it's clever marketing so more people spend $2000 instead of $999 on an m1 air.
Did Tim Cook personally water color the midnight version to save cost? Ridiculous how the color comes off.
Lmaooo funniest comment i have seen in a while
This is such a great video going through the in depth details of each macbook! Great comprehensive video, keep up the great work!
This is the best side by side comparison video👌👌
Great comparison. It would be great to see how 16gb ram with 512GB SSD compares to bace model of M1 Pro 14” as the price is very similar now. In sone shops, you can even get base 14” M1 Pro macbook for less than specked up M2 Air.
The only missing feature on these two laptops is a touch screen.
🙂👍
Never use mine on my gaming rig. And since the Mac is used mostly for writing, it wouldn’t make a big difference for me, but for a lot of folks it’s a dealbreaker.
I am using air M1 which I bought in January 2022. I noticed there is just something different about the display not only in terms of picture quality but the screen itself and I really love it. I don't know what it is and how it is but compared to it all other laptops' display seem like trash to me. Just one thing is that the screen on Mac quickly catches even he slightest of fingerprint and difficult to remove, even cleaning with a perfectly cleaning microfiber cloth sometimes leaves prints! Imagine what would happen if they made the Macs touchscreen! So yeah I would sacrifice the touchscreen for better picture quality and display screen.
TOTALLY AGREE

I bought an M1 MBA (16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Space Grey) recently and I'm not regretting it
And I assume that the fast charger will work just as well on the M1 MBA, wouldn't it? And I'll be keeping my 2019 16" MBP for the heavy lifting in FCP, so the sheer performance is not critical for me. I think the standard M1 MBA is good value, and I'll probably get the base model (256GB); very good value.
