I bought every single generation of the 14" MacBook Pro and compared them in everything from CPU performance, coding, Adobe workflows, blender, gaming, battery life, and even thermal performance. The question is - which one should you get? The latest and greatest, or save some money and get the M1 Pro or M2 Pro instead?

This just shows to me how big of a deal was M1 Pro. I have been using my M1 Pro since February of 2022 and I see absolutely 0 reasons to upgrade to anything above it, as a full-stack developer. It does 100% and more of what I need, it's as fast as the day I bought it, it has no problem running multiple Docker containers, npm, Laravel, multiple web browsers, terminal windows... I am planning to keep mine until it fails.
This is the kind of comments need to read. Instead of upgrading a m3 MacBook Air. People need to search for a refurbished or a used M1 Pro for around the same price.
When will apple stop upgrading the os for it
@@megaman2016about 8 years in the future from the model year
@@megaman2016 I have a 2011 MacBook Pro. I still get updates for patches and security things like that. OS updates stopped like 5 years ago.
But the M3 Max has 128 gb ram
Been waiting for this one!
I’ve been working with the M1 Pro pretty much since it came out- specifically for editing videos and basic motion graphics- and it’s handled everything I’ve thrown at it so far.
Been using my M1 pro MBP since 2022 and will keep this laptop for many years to come I typically upgrade pcs every 7 years
I really wanted a video comparing all 3 models, this is a great video, thanks
which one u will choose
@@Dracula87 pretty much holding out for the M4 Pro generation for now, seems like it will be a bigger upgrade, I need it for Video Editing
Outstanding video!! Thank you
This is a fantastic video. Thank you for your time!
Excellent breakdown, thanks!
I bought a new base model 14 inch M1 MBP around Christmas back in 2022 for a nice $500 discount and when the M2 came out shortly after, I remember thinking I done goofed. But the M1 turned out to be a total beast. It handles literally anything I throw at it and I think it will continue to for years to come. I still have my 2013 13 inch MBP from college that still works okay after all that time, so I can't imagine how much longer the M1 will remain powerful. Great video!
This was so helpful! Thanks ☺️
Thanks for this review.
Where I live, the 14" M1 Pro 10 Core 1 TB costs 1600€ refurbed , while the M3 Pro 11 Core 1TB is ~2400€. I'm a mobile app developer and paying 800€ more for the M3 Pro is quite insane...
Buying a used M1 Pro is great even today, getting a M1 Pro 16 Inch is going to do most people fair justice
Should I get a brand new M1 pro for $1677 or M3 pro for $2636.
Both Base.
@@seederorg2489 The M1 Pro is only good if you're buying used. The M3 Pro however, is a downgrade from the M2 Pro. I suggest you get the M2 Pro new if you want raw power, but if you want features like Dynamic Caching, Space Black, or Ray Tracing then get M3 Pro.
@@seederorg2489 M1. It's still great and will be for years to come
@@seederorg2489 get the M3 pro and pay it off monthly with the Apple Card
@seederorg2489 depends on your budget, can you afford the M3? Then go ahead and get it. If not, then the M1 Pro is still a very solid cpu, im sure it'll last another 5-6 years.
thank you, very helpful!
Excellent job breaking down real world use -Well done!
still with my M1 Pro, 16, love this laptop so much. Every time I open it up I know it's ready to go.
thank you for this ❤
People who have the money and look for longevity: get a new MacBook Pro and keep it for the next 10 years.
People who have a budget looking for longevity: get a used/refurbished MacBook Pro M1(m2 if your budget little larger) and keep your device for 7 years.
if budget is a bit higher i would argue for longevity get a higher ram refurbished from apple
if buying used be carful with cloud keychain and findmy
@@GreatTaiwan Apple is known for for longevity and longevity is different per person. I’m still using a 2011 MacBook Pro. For a few that’s normal for others 5 years is too much with a laptop. It’s still too early to know if we need something with more ram for just the m1s.
If you got the money go for M2 Max or Ultra.. or if you're really rich M3 Ultra
It won't last 3 years, don't be silly.
Great video !

I think the memory bus and memory bandwidth are two different things.
Memory bus width is the number of lanes and the memory bandwidth is the speed.
That highway analogy is awesome! The only difference I would suggest is that they have different speed limits, instead of lane difference. The lanes are actually more in M3 Pro, but the speed is slower.
The data can be broken into smaller chunks and sent sooner in a multilane, but slower individual lanes, than few lanes but faster individual lanes, if that makes sense.
Thanks for the video! I am still in the market for a Macbook and this was really helpful.
Great video mate, I was looking for this one from a long time because I had to make a decision and then I bought M1 pro last month however I can see I made right decision, Thank you so much, you gained a sub.
Bro from where you purchased and at what cost ? …. Even I’m looking for M1 Pro
@@Jeet_The_Gr8 Bro I got it from a local shop, it is very less used and have around 1.7 years of Apple care +.
TY for the awesome video mate

Were gonna need this video for the MacBook Airs later this year
Great video
I recently bought a M3 Pro 16", mainly for school use, so I plan to use it as long as I can, even if that's 6 or 7 years or more from now.
I have an M3 pro 14 and it's great. My 2015 13" has no problem running Sonoma with open core.
i really want this video. thank you
I’ve had an m1 for 4 years. Going to use it till it fails then going to get whatever the newest mackbook is.
Facts,same here!
That's how it should be done
Get the one you can afford. It’s that simple.
Definitely 💯
I think the point of the video is you may be wasting money on the M3 unless you have a specific need for 3D apps where you'll notice a difference.
@@volaticusfilms6185buying macbook without specific task is already a waste anyway, why not waste furthee? 😂
@@kevin-sj3wt Well yep, I agree - it's a lot of money unless it's fulfilling a task and it's proven to be the right one for the job. But with quite a difference between the M2 and M3, if the only noticeable difference is 3D and you don't use that extensively, the extra cash is a bit wasted. I ended up going for the M2 for this reason
@@volaticusfilms6185 then why didnt you get going the cheaper way and take m1 or m1pro which base is already 16 and 512
Another thing to consider is the high resale value of a used Mac… I had the 16” M1 Pro with 16gb ram and 1TB ssd and just sold it for $1,200 and bought the 14” M3 14” with 18GB ram and 1TB drive and got it $200.00 off at Best Buy so my outlay was only 1k for a brand new M2 14”.. I’m a happy camper… 16” was too big for me… hated lugging it around…
if I'm mainly coding andd planning to run virtual machines and emulator, is macbook m2 pro the best choice?
Is the M1 Pro with 1TB (new sealed pack) worth buying in 2024, if I get it for about 1550$? The new M3 Pro with 1TB is around 2800$ in India. I’m majorly going to use it for Photography stuff, with apps like Photoshop and Lightroom.
Temps and fans for M1 Pro?
I've got the M1 Pro 16 Inch not long after it launched in 2021 and it's working perfectly right now. I will probably upgrade it whenever the M6 Pro/Max releases in a few years.
same, would be a major difference for sure
@@christiann7246 yeah right now this one is still holding on strong, and the display quality will be more than enough even when macs get oled
Bro, what is the model name of M2 pro you use in the video?
Can you please tell me?
That's the one i waited for
I have the M1 Max and it’s absolutely perfect. I’ve never had a problem or had it bog down once since I got it. It does all I need and much more. When something’s perfect there’s no reason to buy something else. The only way I’ll buy a newer one is when the screen greatly improves or the battery dies, but I think that will be a while.
I have done AI/ML as a college student and then profession for the last 6 years and switching to the m2 pro was the best decision I have ever made. I have tested out a friends m1 pro and the difference is negligible if you are looking to be a programmer but trust me as someone who has really pushed this laptop to it's limit as a student and professional the m1/2 is all you will need (don't need to upgrade chip, definitely go for more storage and ram especially if you can)
So how do u replace the need to use Nvidia stuff ?
@@GreatTaiwan As an apprentice Data Engineer, you can now on PyTorch specify u want to use the gpu of the silicon MacBook. When you perform DL model training you know you'll wait ton of time if you are building something big but for many cases you won't be too annoyed by the time it takes it's pretty fast. When I have to build huge and complexe model, I use brev dev and pay for the gpu for as long as the training takes me. So it doesn't replace Nvidia's gpu
He didn't say he runs ML workloads on the machine, but it sounds very misleading to people who didn't know better
multitasking is not about just compiling in multiple threads - it is more about our daily usecase where we have opened tons of browser tabs and others processes. Every new process can use separated core, so it should be written for parallel execution. Even if you're using Python or Node for compiling/transpiling, it also will use multicore usage scenario. So more cores - always better. But if you're using Node for building app - single core performance could help here) But this almost doesn't affect on UX :)
I worked an entire day into night on one charge. I was tired and that's all i need.
Just got yesterday MacBook Pro 14” M1 Pro in ideal condition with 98% of battery for 1300€ in Spain within 3 years of warranty 🎉
And its amazing, so silent and cool after my Legion with RTX 3060 which one was so noisy like flying jet even in regular tusk
its because of the GPU hehe
Would any of you say the M3 is an upgrade coming from an early 2015 MacBook Pro?
I'm currently trying to decide if it's smarter to buy a refurbished macbook pro m1 or a refurbished m3 (with the m1 being almost £500 pounds cheaper). As the m1 is a little older, i am considering the investment regarding longlivety etc. Anyone know if it is worth the price difference?
Just bought the base model M1 macbook pro good value.
Long battery and decent performance in office.
i normally just use adobe so i was thinking to save money and just go w m1 but i’ve always wanted to try out blender - can it handle more simple stuff or the program itself would just be slow? ty!
I am a first year CSE student who is going to start specialization in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning from the third year. I had made my mind that I would buy a 14" M3 Pro MacBook Pro 1TB but after watching your video, I am rethinking. Could you please guide me regarding the same? I have heard that AI/ML simulations are more GPU intensive but I would like a 2nd opinion. Any thoughts?
I haven't specifically tested AI workflows yet so I'm not entirely sure (I intend to start soon). However, I would recommend going for an M3 Pro. The GPU specific enhancements like dynamic caching etc will likely benefit AI/ML workflows.
I have the base M1 Pro 14-inch, Apple Refurbished, purchased on sale through my local Microcenter (now $1199, which is insane). Battery life is great, screen is awesome, and its plenty powerful. Apple really shot themselves in the foot with their M1 series of chips, all of which are still great. Maybe the M4 will be the big leap we expected with M3.
Agreed. I always say the M1 Pro ruined Apple's future LOL
Is MetalRT used in any way in blender viewports or when playing with shaders or even painting textures or is it used just only for rendering? Same question additionally about Substance Painter if I may ask. Does Metal speedup working process in viewports in both apps?
I'm deciding between M2 and M3 but I won't be rendering in any of those apps. I will assamble assets in Unreal Engine though... I guess Metal can be used for compiling shaders in UE etc.
It's worth noting that the specs on the 16in versions are different than the 14in and you're only comparing 14in models
The only difference is that the Pro chips that you get in the 16" versions are not binned, you just get the full Pro chips. Those are also an option in the 14" MBP. And as he says, he is comparing the base models that you can buy anywhere.
I got a refurbished m2 pro with 1tb storage for the same price as an m3 pro with 512 gb storage (from the apple store). I think double the storage was more worth it than what the m3 pro chip offered
I have the M1 pro since begginning of year 2022 and it runs absoutely amazing now in March 2024. Best purchasing decision ever.
this is the easiest to understand video covering this i’ve watched so thank u lol
thank you !! would you go though for M2 pro with 12/19 cpu/gpu or M3 pro with 11/14?
i will insanely appreciate your help!🙏🏼
and btw which exactly configuration of cpu/gpu did you test?:)
I was considering an M2 MacBook, until I saw how much the lack of another NAND drive crippled the read and write speeds, making it worse than an M1. So I bit the bullet and got the M3 Pro 12/18 upgrade. Not that I needed the extra power, I just wanted the 1TB storage.
Qual app ele está usando pra ter esses dados de monitoramento nesse momento do video (10:06)?
Is there a difference for CAD between them?
I have a 32gb M1 Pro and I plan to keep it forever ❤
Great comparison. I am tempted by a M2 Pro which is about £1000 cheaper than the M3 equivalent. It's such a crazy good price and I'm glad to hear I'm probably not going to regret buying this one. Thanks again
great video just missing the based model m3 16gb for comparison
I have seen so many reviews about these 14 inch MacBooks and I’m thinking of getting the previous 14 inch MacBook M2 Pro 16 gb 1T ssd.
If you can find one still in a local warehouse, Costco was closing this configuration out at $1,700
M3 Max is the best laptop ever and when it's second place it'll still be great. I get a good 6 hours of battery on the highest power settings, high workflow...
would you go for M2 pro but upgraded to 12/19 or M3pro in 11/14 as they are in the same price range ?
M3 Pro.
is the m1 pro still good on 4k editing?
My M1 Pro 32gb ram and 1tb works wonders. Probably replaced with M8 soc whenever that comes lol
Im glad i stumbled across this video because i was supposed to pick up an M3 of this spec., but considering that authorized resellers now dropped the price to around $2k(16inch) for a sealed one and where the M3 here goes for $2,800..huge saving and i video edit on 4k Not 8k and i have no use for 3D rendering and most importantly i’m a Silver boi anyway not a spaceblack gamerboi…, huge thanks! Video couldn’t come at a better time
Is there any info about exact configuration used to test each MacBook? Like M1 Pro 10cpu 16Gpu version?
Watch the first few minutes again
I'm just a week away from buying a Macbook pro with the pro chip and I was searching for a video like this just comparing the pro chips in all generations (only). I'm not interested in comparing pro with max chips or anything else. Now I'm all clear that I'm going with the M3 Pro.
good choice! Just 3 weeks ago, I bought the max m3 pro 14 inch, 1TB SSD, and base 18gb ram. As an upgrade from my 2010 iMac, it is the fastest computer I have ever used. Super worth it, and I have better battery life than both my friends, who have M1 and M2 pros. I’m also using my 2010 iMac as a monitor for my macbook, to top it all off!
@@thyssenFILMS great choice. Invest in a high resolution monitor if you can. I use monitors all the time and its worth it
@@vidarshan thanks! I’ll try and find a 120/144hz 4k monitor - i’m gonna use my imac for a while since it’s 2k and can be overclocked to 90hz - but a second monitor i can’t say no too! :)
I just ordere my M3 Pro and traded my 4 yr old Intel 10th gen and which was in pretty good shape because I hardly used it. After watching your video I'm going to cancel my order.
It hasn't even been shipped yet and I wouldn't want to trade my older Mac.
I'll look at an M1 or a new higher end ASUS. I'm not sure whether Asus is as durable as Apple products are but I'm beginning to see through the whole branding thing and the subtle marketing strategies where they force you to upgrade and as by freezing your customization from M1 to M3. Thank you your video was very revealing I'll make sure I share it with others.

Just ordered the M3 Pro MacBook Pro refurbished from Apple for $1699, feel like that’s worth the $100 over the M2 Pro variant! It’s going to be my first ever Mac so should be an exciting machine.
Great video buddy, and completely agree that the M1 chip is still the way to go and save yourself the money
M1 Pro with 30 cycles after 1 year. I'm still at 100% although I work with it plug in 99% of the time. no troubles with the battery management software from apple.
Beware its not healthy to have it plugged in all the time. Need to "exercise battery" from time to time.
thank you
i have the m2 pro mbp and i love it!
no more windows 🥳
3:21. You assume the less memory bandwidth is a problem. But its not a bottleneck so no problem.
What app is that to monitor temperature and CPU fan speeds?
TG Pro?
did you find the right app? i could just download any other app but the one used in this video is very good looking
Did you try running VMs?
They’re All okay for it. Just have to a configuration that works well for ur use case.
if you're on a budget a used M1 Pro is absolutely a great value however if you're a power user to any capacity especially if your workflow is more CPU intensive, you notice and appreciate the gains with each iteration of apple silicon. I upgraded from M2 to M3 pro and M3 is considerably better. for me, apps like Xcode and figma open up a lot faster, code compilation is a lot faster, intelisense is a lot faster. Mind you, I came from a base M2 but that shouldn't matter as for my workflow, the base M2 was actually faster in a lot of cases than the M2 Pro for a lot of single core tasks. Id refer anyone to Alex Ziskinds vids on this this comparison.
I am planning to buy a new MacBook. In my nearby store M2 pro 16 inch is cheaper than M3 pro 14 inch. Can anyone suggest which would be the best option.
16 inch is big like really big. I use it for my work and i have to carry it. But i love writing code on it. The extra screen size helps to read more lines of code. But its a little bit uncomfortable while carrying. Ps i use public transport. 14 inch is really small for coding and designing .
Im not sure why nobody realize and still guessing on why bandwitch has been lowered. Its obvious they were willing to separate pro and max, however if they kept it at 200 bandwitch it would still fit their purpose coz they also played with efficiency core count etc - so not the main objective for this. What it really is - apple made use of 3 channel memory instead of 2 channel memory (odd vs even amounts) by using 3x6 sticks instead of 8x2 to result in higher amount of ram for the base and nothing more than that. They could either kept them as 16 which wouldnt be a selling point for a new model but also to keep 200gb they had to do 2 sticks of ram and they had to customly build 10 gb stick which would end up at 20gb total by 10x2 which would for majority eliminate the desire to go higher and considered as too much. Thats that
The M3 should have significantly better battery life in low power mode at comparatively better speeds. For those doing long days of simple work w/o a charger that’s a serious advantage and for those not needing the power you can also argue that lower power consumption would give you a bit more (long term) battery longevity (lower temp and fewer cycles)
I just bought a barely used M1 Pro 16 inch with 1200€ (98% battery health,40 cycles), did I make a good deal ? ( Europe)
Yes

And what would you guys choose between M2 Pro Chip with 12‑Core CPU and 19‑Core GPU 1TB 16 unified(1949$) vs M3 Pro Chip with 12‑Core CPU and 18‑Core GPU 1TB 18 unified(2039$)? Let me know
btw i'm upgrading from a intel macbook air so i'm eyeing the base variant pros but dont mind going up in price if it's worth it in the long run
Base model M2 Pro is absolutely amazing and probably enough to last you as long as you need. If you can afford to, Ram upgrades are always the best way to go.
Dude. I've had my M1 Max laptop for about a year.... battery health is still showing 100% -- cycle count 16 -- This is an always on always plugged in laptop. So yeah entirely possible to find one with 100%
This is the video I was looking for, everyone either compares the base M1 vs M3 or the top spec M1 Max vs M3 Max, but for owners of an M1 Pro MacBook like me, this is actually useful. I think I’ll keep my MacBook for another generation. Hopefully M4 will come with something interesting like hardware for generative AI.

if i buy m1 pro now. will it be wise decision? as it was manufactur in 2021 which is old.
yes you will be more than fine. if you find a slightly future-proofed version then you’re set for the next 7 years at least.
for example, i got my M1 Pro MBP in 2021 with 10 core CPU and 1TB memory. there are options out there to add sleek SD cards with another 1TB of memory. i do a lot multitasking with programming, web surfing, video, streaming, and music listening. almost 3 years later it still feels brand new.

My new M3 Pro is awesome! 🔥
how to get a pc for free? I'm starting from scratch, i want start a agence creating applications and website, I have skills in flutterflow and Webflow but I don't have a PC to start what do you advise me?
You never get anything for free. Although you probably could ask for something very cheap. You could put out ads online asking for someone who is getting rid of an old one, or you can try used electronics stores or thrift stores. Depends what country you are in. The best way would be to save up a few hundred dollars and buy one part at a time on sale or used online.
@@ghost-user559 I see, thank you
@@obed_ibwila Yes sometimes you can find them very inexpensive but you have to look very hard. Sometimes universities or schools are recycling old ones and you can get those for free if you go from school to school or university asking if they are getting rid of any electronics. The best solution is to save up as much as you can and buy parts, but then you have to know how to build one. The second best way is to buy used. But if you can find someone getting rid of one that is one way to get it cheap or free.
@@obed_ibwila Yes it takes time but sometimes universities might have some they are replacing too. There is no fast or easy way to get one free or cheap, but it is possible. It just takes a lot of time so it’s sometimes worth it just to save up for a used one.
