Great insight about your problem with consistency and not playing/ practicing regularly. Would enjoy hearing your mindset about playing against different handicap levels on different size tables also
Good idea! Thanks, man
I really enjoy this format, with the commentary about the available options, and differentiating those for the different skill levels. I'm around a 3 or 4 myself, and while I understand the point about surveying the whole table, I also have enough trouble just making the basic shots :D
@kimb7181 awesome! Glad you like it. Thanks for watching
As an armature player, this is a very fun style of pool video to watch! Subbed, and looking forward to checking out a lot more of your content!
Sweet! I'm glad that you find it entertaining! Thanks for the sub!
I like how humble you are, hard to find in pool players normally lol. Most guys no matter their skill level, talk like they're so close to being on SVB's level. You did give that last cue ball before the 8 a great chance to scratch lol.
Lol, thanks man! This is a humbling game.. there always seems to be someone who is better, no matter how good you get. Thanks for checking out my channel!
The Dimond table Pocket Rattle, it's a standard feature
LOL - comes stock with every new floor model!
The diamond hanger is common too where 3/4 of the ball is hanging over and it still doesn’t go lol
@@randallgibson8619 lol
It’s hard to cheat the pocket on a Diamond. The red labels are even harder; at least the one at my hall is because it has deeper shelves than the blue labels. And they’re 9’, too. They have a bunch of 7’ Diamonds as well, but they’re the older models and I can’t remember if they even have a label like these ones. Long story short, playing on Diamonds helps me play on the Valleys in my league. They’re way easier than Diamonds. Lol
in some regards, yes. Easier to make shots on a valley but, the "touch" and "shape" can sometimes be harder, due to the fact that a valley table is harder to finesse! Thanks for watching, I appreciate the support!@@djamo1969
Nice game, nice commentary, I like you explain every shot you take and what time of spin or effect you put on the cue ball, got yourself another subscriber, hope to learn more from your videos. Keep it up.
Thank you Alfredo!! Much love
Just came across this video/channel. I’m about to start my third season (SL 4) and look forward to seeing more of your videos. Very helpful/insightful. From what how to hit the ball, to explaining the leave, or pointing out why the shot didn’t work out. Thanks for the info. Got yourself a new subscriber.
Awesome! I appreciate the support! Thank you
The "Saiyen" I always come back stronger 😤🤘
good one!
Started APA this January to meet people. They started me as a 3, now a 6.
I've played all levels.
Wish someone in our league would record like you do. I bet your fellow league players really enjoy your vids.
Thanks for doing these, I feel pool is growing. A large part of it because of people like you,👍
Thanks so much man! Some of them act like they don't care either way but, then I notice they seem to watch them, LOL... You should start recording your area matches!
@@Amateur_Pool I may, I'm so lazy about editing though, but I think I'll at least try it to see how it goes.
@@ruabadfish2oou awesome!
as a 3, myself, your commentary was very helpful
Thank you
sandbagging players is rampant in the APA
It sure is..
My nickname would be Kid Inconsistent.
LOL - good one! I could use that name also
Great video and funny commentary. Its helpful when players of your caliber explain what your doing and why. Thanks
Awesome! I'm glad people are actually taking away some information from my videos! I appreciate the support!
I'm a 3 and play against our 7's in practice regularly. If you want to get better it's the only way. I also recommend playing local tourneys...I doubled up with another lvl 3 at an 8-ball scotch doubles tourney and we finished 2nd outta 20 teams! Talk abut a boost in confidence? Sending 6's and 7's home was a blast!
Awesome! You're absolutely right.. playing with someone better will boost your game up. I Appreciate you watching!
The reason you missed that shot @17:26 wasn't the slow roll. A few things, you're jacked up compressing the hinge of your stroke making it more difficult to execute smoothly, hitting down with a short back stroke and that in and of itself can send the cueball offline a little. Lower your bridge to flat on the rail and drop your back hand so your elbow/hinge opens, and your stroke will be smoother. Then, Set - Pause - Finish - Freeze that's to say, once down on your shot and you're lined up, take two slow and even strokes focusing on the point on the cue ball you want to hit, then Pause at the end of your backstroke and shift your eyes and fix on the object ball (what you want to avoid is darting your eyes from cueball to object ball and back and forth as every time you're feeding your brain different information and the objective is deliberate and steady execution of every shot that is repeatable EVERY SINGLE time) then execute a smooth flowing stroke and leave the tip out there and see your shot into the pocket and that's the Finish and Freeze. This discipline is what all pros use in some form to make their game more consistent. I've trained with BCA Master Instructor Randy Goettlicher, with whom Allison Fisher tuned up her game when she first arrived in the U.S. and I've shot a game or two with her and she couldn't help but give commentary and her almost verbatim recitation of Set/Pause/Finish/Freeze which was hilarious to think she still goes through that verbal prep for a shot, whether in her head or out loud.
Every shot I miss and I miss my fair share as we all do, is always because I failed to be deliberate and rely on mechanics and execute according to Set your bridge hand down in line with your shot, take your practice strokes and Pause, shift your eyes to the object ball and stroke to Finish and then Freeze and see your shot into the pocket. This is the time to analyze briefly whether you make it or not and why.
great advice! Thank you sir
Every APA player always complains that their opponent is better than their rating and that they’re underrated why I hate the league!
Lol.. that's not just apa.. gambling, tournament, ANY time there's a handicap being used, someone will complain
Try BCA even if your 3 or 4 in apa.
I am a 6/7, and had to play a 3 in 8 ball a few weeks back. For me, it can be difficult to focus on playing the same type of game against a 3 that you would against a high ranked player. In my experience, most 3's can run 2-4 balls with an open table. So, just like when playing a high skill level, you definitely don't wanna leave an empty table. That's what I did in the rack that I lost. Haha.
Exactly... it's hard not to think to yourself, "I'll get another shot if i miss, " lol
Play safe against the scrubs, they don't know what to do.
@bob733333 love it!
Great lil match! Been playing on and off for about 40 years, and usually it takes me about 10 racks to warm up, maybe 15 to get hot if I'm gonna. I have no idea what APA skill-level I'd be graded, what's the highest? 10? SVB? Reyes? I have kind of Efren's outside-the-box creativity, kicking skills etc . . but a trip-hammer break like Shane. Favorite player of all time though? Mizz. Have a fun time whatever ya do!
Thanks for watching! Highest apa level is 7 but, apa is set up for the newer player. So, SL 7 can range from like a 550 fargo, up to over 700
@@Amateur_Pool Cool. Being kinda old school, I'm raahthaa ..appalled with what they've done to 8-ball. Makes it too damn easy. like 9-ball w/ too many options. Play it on a 10' table that way and it'd be even easier. I only just bought a cue stick a couple years ago. Just finally got tired of boogery house cues.
@_Ramen-Vac_ that's sweet! Ya gotta have your own stick! That's crucial.
@@Amateur_Pool nah, not too crucial. Playin the table's crucial. Same thing as a poker face.
Its 9 in nine ball max SL
Hi Josh, New subscriber here. Love your channel. Lively commentary and good information. Yea its always tough playing an opponent when they only need 2 games. And especially tough when you give them a game. doh! Way to manage the match.
One comment on the match, @36:45 your opponent called for a time-out for that kick on the 3 ball. Then they marked the aim point with something. That is not legal in APA, or it wasn't when I played a few years ago. Fortunately it didn't really effect the result. Good luck with your channel and your game.
Thanks for the kind words.. i truly appreciate it.. in our area, you are allowed to mark the table with a coach... thanks for the sub, and the comment..
Hey Josh let me give you tip from a skill level 7 in 8 ball skill level 9 in 9 ball to another skill level 7.
I don't know for certain but in this match it looks like you prefer to break from the right side of the pool table.
Practice from both sides and from hitting the apex ball straight on.
tip 1
if your opponent likes to tilt the rack away from the way you break.
break from the other side you will make the 8 on the break a lot more.
if the apex ball is not touching the 2 second balls the 8 will fly out even better.
I have made the 8 on the break over 400 times. not all of them were wins.
tip 2
when playing any level but especially the lower skill levels and it comes to hill hill.
break from head on. hit the apex ball straight on.
this will help in not scratching.
tip 3
there were a couple of times where after the break you could of played a safe which would of open up a couple of your balls plus I think you would of gotten ball in hand because he would have had to kick at the ball.
even if you didn't the outcome would be to your advantage anyway.
Then I thought you would of ran out the table.
tip 4
remember when playing a skill level 3 or 2 the more balls on the table the harder it is for them to runout.
when I end up playing a 2 or 3 or 4. my goal is to win by creating as many innings I need to win.
a break and run is not the only way to win.
tip 5
don't play skill level 4's
I'm sure you know why.
Great tips bro... i appreciate you!
@@Amateur_Pool
You're welcome
It's funny how you can tell immediately from the how steady the bridges and stroke is how good the player is.
So true!
Playing 3’s are tough! One unexpected scratch on the 8 and they’ve got a point.
Yup... Ya gotta stay on your game, for sure..
I'm a 5/5, spent 2 sessions playing masters to get out of being stuck at 4/4, so I've played a lot of 7/9's. I subbed midway through watching this because of how humble you are (not that the guys in my league aren't, but they don't record/post their matches), but it's refreshing to see you, full transparency with your mistakes and all. Most of the higher level players I've seen post will only show their near perfect matches, and when asked about it, act like they don't make mistakes. I know that's not true, lots of really good 7/9's in my area, and in masters, I was usually able to get 2 racks, a lot of times to 4-5, and every now and then it came down to the last rack. I even won 3 matches in those two sessions. It's great to see posts like this. Keep 'em coming, man!
That's awesome bro. I appreciate the nice words too. EVERYONE misses, even the pros. Good amateurs miss more often than we'd like to admit, that's for sure. I made a decision to just spotlight amateur pool, with all of its nuisances. Just posting the good matches wouldn't be a good "amature " channel, imo. I appreciate you watching!
I enjoy watching your videos Josh. As a 7/9 I can relate to a lot of the things and situations you describe, especially when having to play the lower SL players. But that's pool lol.
💯... i appreciate you watching, sonny!
As a 7 I always use the 2nd ball break against lower skill levels. Like you said they don’t do well with clusters.
I'm in Oz, playing English 8 Ball (using the new "International Rules").
This type of talking through frames is *EXACTLY* what I've been looking for. Subbed.
Question: After winning your 5th frame, the cue ball was still moving when you collected the un-potted balls to rack. In your comp, is that loss of frame? (earlier you were marking the pocket, to follow the rules, so I'm curious if this was friendly convention, or not part of your rules?)
Yes.. when your in an apa tournament, that is a loss of rack. When your playing regular league play, against someone you know well, that petty rule is typically not called (just like making the pocket)
when i was a 4 i loved being tossed out to 7's They quickly found out why my teams would throw me lol.
Nice! It's good to have a strong 3 or 4...
I always hated playing sandbaggers in APA. I played against 3s that stroked the ball like Mike Massey
Lol
Just like you said about not practicing all the time you lose your consistency it's like your mind knows what to do but you can't get your hands to move the cue the way it needs to be
Exactly!
I am a bit surprised they allow a player to use the chalk (or anything) to mark the spot where they want to shoot at when kicking - or even banking. Is that really allowed in APA? In the pool halls I have played in America, and the Philippines, that shit would never be allowed no matter what skill level.
Correct.. i was surprised as well..
@@Amateur_Pool That is actually a recent rule change (last 2 or 3 years) and prior to that it was definitely NOT permitted to place chalk or a joint protector or anything else as an aid to aiming . Whether by a coach or the shooter himself . I'm not sure why they made the change. Maybe the rules committee decided that since the league is encouraging new players to join , they wanted to make coaching and instructing easier . From my experience , it doesn't make that much difference in the outcome of the shot . Low SL players are capable of missing just about anything .
Early you said it was headstring, in the last, you took open ball I hand. Which is it?
It's behind the head string, if it's a scratch off the break. Any other time, it's behind the line.
Good to hear you calling how the shots are played. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! Appreciate you
Pimp of pool, lmao. Nice. Idk what my nickname would be. Never had one. Idk, I'm probably not good enough for one tbh. HA. Btw, great job my man. Your channel's really starting to take off. As someone who plays for fun at a college bar that has beer stained, “quicksand” felt and a not quite level floor, this gives me confidence that I’m a better player than I thought.
I feel like there’s about a 10 item checklist that should be the first lesson for any novice. 1) just look at the table; what are the hard shots? 2) where’s the Q ball going- this is more important than where is the object ball going. 3) did you mean to hit it so hard? 4) why do you play so many shots with draw, did you forget rule #2? 5) try a safety every now and again; going 7 rails and moving every ball on the table isn’t a winning strategy. 6) you can’t change physics
Well, there might not even be 10 most important rules
Pretty spot on! 👌
38:00 are you allowed to mark the table like that in APA?
Yup.. another FANTASTIC apa rule (sarcasm), lol
39:32 - if you're genuinely worried about scratching, why hit that shot as hard as you did? You didn't need to risk the scratch in middle if you hit it even 20% softer.
you are right! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't slow rolling that cut shot. I tend to miss that cut a LOT more often when I hit it softer. I appreciate the input!
Last SL3 I played had a two inning game followed by a one inning game.
3s give me headaches.
Me 2
When I go up blind as a 7 I pretty much know they gonna sacrifice a 3 or a 2. It’s not rare at all in my town. Usually those are the easiest matches to win but occasionally crazy stuff does happen.
That happens a lot here, but in 9 ball. Rarely do we see a team put a 3 in a 7 in 8ball. Thanks for watching!
5:00 I've gotten past it but when I started APA I would say 1 shot wonder.
Lol..
Loved it, Thanks for the video and the pointers as play progressed!!!! Looking forward to more!!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Def will have more to come!! Thanks for watching
before they changed the scoring system it was common for people to throw low numbers at 7's - but you're right now it's only worthwhile in 9 ball - great video really like how you break down your thought process on how you go about the rack.
I appreciate that, Tim..
They still do.They dump on us 7s and hope the 2-3 gets a lucky game for a hill point.Keeps your 2-3s from going up.
@@AAAskeet yea i've seen that first hand when i used to play - it's been a while since i played lAPA i'm sure it's always going to be that way
I spent two years dumping games in APA pool back in the 90s just to gamble with so called 7s lol. I robbed so many guys who just didn’t have a clue. Damn internet and camera phones ruined the hustle!
@@somepeoplecanthandlethetruth lol.... ya man, hard to stay "hidden" these days
6:06 he should have banked the ball on the rail towards the eight-ball to tie it up so that it would have to be developed in order to free it when going for the clearance.
That would have been better!
38:11 why was that a bad hit n ball in hand ? i slow mo'd it and he hit the 1 ball first from what i could see ?
That was the 9 ball. He was on the 8 ball but, he hit the 9 first
When I was a 4..I loved that matchup…I could put a lot of pressure on em .because you drop 2 … you mess up once I’m on the hill
Exactly! It can be tough matchup, either way
hey Josh, what are you using to film your matches?
I'm just using a GoPro 11.
Why was it ball in hand in last match when he did not make the 8 in the corner?
shoot me a time stamp and I'll take a look
I don't use the 8-ball break (hitting 2nd ball in the rack)), when playing a 2 or a 3 skill level player, because if you make the 8 and scratch, you lose the game. Since they only need 2 wins to beat you, it's risky.
smart thinking!
Hello, what cue are you playing (carbon i suppose) ?
@luckyone1413 it's a cuetec with a cynergy 11.75mm shaft
Where is this. Looking for places to play in the flint area. Just started playing after taking about 10 years off which seems to be a common trend in some of your videos lol

1:00, 4:41, 7:00 Josh, your shots seem like your arm is too tight. Relax your grip and work on your follow through. You're jabbing at the ball, which makes your shots jittery and your accuracy plummets.

I’m a SL6 trying to get to a 7. My biggest weakness is playing against lower skill levels. My worst nightmare is a SL3 who’s coached correctly and plays really safe! Lol
lol, no kidding... it's harder to play down, mentally
We used to have some Rated Tournaments & yes we had some 3s... Two that I remember, were a couple Bouncers, at a local Strip Club & they were some big ol' boys. They didn't play too bad, but they could Break. In fact, they would beat most folks who couldn't get out or couldn't Break & yes they mad a lot of game balls with shootin' hard & a crushing break, that pocketed the 9....
It's hard to play someone with a handicap, especially when they can crush the balls
36:05 he put a marker on the table , so thats allowed ? i would not be happy with that rule !
Yes.. in APA you are allowed to put something on the table to mark it, unfortunately..
That's what was happening to me when I was playing APA this pst Friday. I was rattling pockets all night. Same with my bank shots. It was just a rough night for me
It happens... i hate it but, it is what it is! Thanks for watching!
Slow your stroke up a bit. The harder you hit the smaller the pocket plays.

Any coaching advice?
I got lots of it, lol... what type of coaching advice are you looking for?
@@Amateur_Pool Coaching lower rated players. You and I are both 7s in apa...but the coaching aspect I'm a bit lost the times I have. Because how I took to pool growing up...some players at times get the vibe they aren't as interested as you and I...where while they'd like to learn and I don't mind answering questions...how to not overwhelm them with concepts, not potentially come off as rude, etc. Been trying the last time I played league to get them to think for themselves, while trying to be reassuring they can do it. Times I am asked I try to view them as I would my kid...trying to ask what their thoughts are, while trying to give a little bit of a hint so they'll try a bit more and not feel the only answer is to call for a time out.
@excxmoody ya, man... that can be tough sometimes.. that has less to do with pool, and more to do with reading the individual person. Some people soak up the knowledge, others could care less. I normally try to look at the table and just give them a couple of options, and let them decide. I'll explain the pros and cons of each option. Your not going to get your players to think the way you and i do, right away. Remember, it's takes years to get good at this game. I appreciate you!
For instance, myself I've learned from just trying different things like trying to kick or tracking the object ball from many angles at different speeds. Just how I learn. However trying to coach...I notice they're not as into billiards.@@Amateur_Pool
@excxmoody not everyone has the passion for it. Some people use pool league as an excuse to go out and have fun at the bar. Other people (like us) play league because the pool IS the fun for us.
I don't second ball break on lower handicap. I want a better spread. Also I want the number to the blond in the Nike cap🤗
Lol... my man!! 😍
I'm with you, Brother . Broke my heart when Josh said she's married . Oh well .
@nickg9021 my bad, fellas 😁
Who saw that chalk placement in the last kick shot? Then look at the coach, he moved it even slightly further down, in the wrong direction. They messed up. Not to mention, diamond tables' rails play shorter right?
Ya, they feel like they play a little shorter too me.
My nickname would be... "oh snap" as in I also have a way of being self-destructive. LOL My opponent cornerhooked me by the corner pocket. The object ball was by the middle diamond on the short rail. I aimed at the edge of the other side of the pocket almost aiming at the tit. That causes the cueball to jump to the right. If you control the speed right it will hit the object ball. I hit it so well I made the ball. The cue ball went straight up for a perfect shot in the side for my next move... almost... it rolled just a hair too much and I hooked myself behind one of his balls. Everyone said oh man what an unlucky roll. It was a great trick shot to get out of the cornerhook I learned back in the late 1980s. I just wish I had not over rolled that cueball by a tad... I would have been out. As you can see I can also pull shots out of nowhere to get out of a jam. Another reason to call me the "oh snap" guy.
Lol, that's a good one.. could fit a lot of players... or, "oh, shit" lol

How long have you been a 7 for ?
About a year now. I'm still working on getting better!
I'm a 3 and when I played APA my team always put me up against 6-7 if the other team had them. Seems like a lot of the higher rank players we played against would get pissed off at it and they would play like crap enough for me to get to the hill or even steal the match on occasion. Our 5s-6s we're confident in beating the teams 4s-5s but would try too hard on their 6s-7s.
it's a good strategy for 9 ball, for sure. I use it sometimes too. It normally doesn't work that well in 8 ball though!
I'm NAPA we call all the pockets I'm used to. I just naturally do whenever I'm playing

Too true with people calling timeouts when there is NOT a shot left, then they want their 6 to give them a hail mary. 🤦🤷🏻♂️

Richie Rich here super 3😂😂
Boom!
In my experience the 3 usually loses badly. But u never know how the balls r gonna roll
That's true! It can be a tough match
You almost, once again, bobbled that last 10-ball before making the eight.
Brooo... if i could stop doing that, I'd win way more, lol
@@Amateur_Pool…It’s a trust thing. You don’t trust yourself to hit the edge of the ball or aiming at on rail or near rail shots. I’m a 7 myself and I used to struggle with the same thing, until I forced myself to see the edge to edge with practice. It sometimes looks like you will miss the ball entirely, but you don’t. Once you get it you’ll never look back. Trust me.
@Rickbearcat your right.. i notice that when i shot good, it's all about trusting my stroke to work
It's 8 ball. There's 7 opportunities to "get right" on your next ball.
well said!
I just had a match like this last night apa. I am a 6 playing a strong 2. I won 6-0. It was a challenge .
Nice work!
U got action
Thanks
I played APA before. I could beat the sl 6/7 while I was a handicap 2/3. You never know your luck. But your strokes would drive your player crazy.
🤔 thanks... i think
I was thinking of the name "The Wood Stroker" what do you think?
Mehhh.. i mean.. how much wood do you stroke? That means something funny in some slang speech, lol
My nickname is pool Jesus. I'm a handicap 3. But that's the what u start at I guess. I can run tables and had MVP couple times. Ppl hate that I only got to win 2 games. And it's quick. I don't miss much at all.
You sound like a bad ass mo fo
"Natural State Nate"
Good one
So, right off the bat, you're telling us he's NOT an SL 3 as is typical in APA.
true! apa has some sandbaggers, for sure
What is THE main difference between a 3 and a 4 ? I think it's consistency . From this point of view , would you expect to see a 3 shoot like a 3 all of the time ? Of course not . He's going to have bad nights and good ones . What you happen to see on any given night determines whether you think he sucks or is a sandbagger . That's really not fair . Sure, there ARE sandbaggers , but not many can stay at SL 2 or 3 indefinitely. The system will eventually catch up. Try to give benefit of the doubt regarding the sandbagger slur and assume that your opposing player isn't cheating if he happens to win . Maybe you just caught him on a good night.
When I join APA i will be the strongest SL3 for hopefully only 1 match. I don't like the handicap/SL of the APA, when I played in a bar league, it was win or lose 1 game team best of 13. 2 singles rounds 2 doubles, and then captains choice. When I started I was terrible. When I left after a few seasons, I was top 5. But that doesn't translate to APA, so I have to start as a 3. I think I'm like a 5. I can beat a 7 no problem as long as I get to shoot. I don't need the handicap. My defense on point, my main issue is 9/10 times i have the runout, but I bottle it.
Ya, handicaps can keep you down sometimes. They can effect your mental game
