Man, that 3 rail shot on the 2 in the 4th rack was so good!! That was so close!!! Great table read!
Thanks.. i thought i had it!
Keep up the commentary brother, that's what makes your games interesting...you play like a true gentleman that loves the game.
Thanks, Daniel! Appreciate the support!
Greetings from Alaska! Yes, there is a pool scene here 😅
Nice!!
Circle game, lol! 43 here too. Love your vids, keep it up please
Thanks, man! Appreciate the support!
I was stationed in AK for a couple years, and there are definitely pool players there. Not sure about APA or any other league presence, but never hard to find a game. About the same as the lower 48 really. When it's cold and dark for a few months at a time, people have tables and play when there isn't much else to do.
Nice!
About to watch - but my estimation ( accounting for pressure) is different than the posted strength. Usually they play weaker than their skill levels. Josh - your commentary is exactly the way many, many players need to hear to understand this game !
thank you!
AT 34:27 you pocketed the 8-ball to go 'on the hill' but the next break was your opponent. I am confused bc you should have broke the next rack. But definitely another great match sir.
Ya, several people pointed this out. I mixed up 2 racks. You'll notice, i broke the following rack
@@Amateur_Pool I did notice, no worries. Was still a great match sir. Wishing you the best (w/ APA) for 2024.
@todds7277 thanks, Todd!
Hey Josh, I was in Alaska for 3 weeks on a job over 10 years ago. I ate lunch in a bar that had a couple pool tables. There was a young guy playing I would guess in APA would be a 4-5 (At the time I was a solid 6). He was decent. I put quarters on the table and finished eating. He played worse after I put $ on the table and against me. After loosing 3 games he asked if I wanted to play for $50. I asked why would someone loose 3 games then want to play for money unless he was a hustler? He said "I'm not a hustler but maybe I haven't been playing my best. I asked how he knew if I was playing my best. ( I wasn't. It's fun hustling a wanna be hustler.) After listening to a bunch of his bs I said, we can do a race to 4 for $50. Show me your money. He swore up and down he had $50 but he refused to show it to me the way I showed him I had $50. I said unless you show me the money and we give it to the bartender to hold I'm not going to bet with you but we can shoot a few more games and you can show me your best game. I smoked him and he left without saying a word. I said, "You have a lot to learn." He didn't respond.
Lol... yes, I've had a few situations at the bar where the good "bar player" tried hustling me.. it's always funny
Love the alien... As I write that I'm in Mission Control at NASA during lunch watching games on RUclips.
Awesome! Beam me up, Scotty :)
I’m not far into the video but I appreciate your honesty. A lot of players over-inflate their skill but you are transparent about your mistakes. Great video.
Thank you! I'm an amateur. No shame in not playing perfect.
@@Amateur_Pool I too am an amateur (not as good as you) and your videos have made me want to pursue league play.
@LB-kr5ku that's awesome.. that's partly why i so these videos. The sport of pool is underrated and should be a lot bigger! Thanks so much for watching!
I'm glad you showed one of your defeats. Nobody wins every match. Thoroughly enjoy watching your videos.
Thanks, Eric! I've got a lot of losses posted. Sometime i learn more from watching my losses
I randomly found your channel Powell! I love it homie! Glad to give you some love!
Thanks bro! Good lookin.. hope all is good with you!
I’ve played on the Arcadia cloth too. I have Simonis 860 on my table like you, but what I’ve experienced is the difference on a Calley table (regardless of the cloth) is the rails don’t react like a Diamond or Rasson table. I believe that is the element that bewitches us with speed control. You’re so accustomed to that nice Diamond table that a Valley needs a whack of a stroke to get similar action out of the balls.
But one thing is watched closely in this video is your stroke. When you got really good speed/position you finished your stroke well. Other times you were “punching” shots and got sluggish reactions. I’m sure some of it had to do with speed factors playing on your mind, but you stroke and play well when you finish every shot. I can’t recall ever seeing you miss when that ferrule is still at the end of your stroke. Especially on your break shot.
Thanks for the insight! I know i have some inconsistencies in my stroke (mainly my follow through) been trying to work on it. Just takes time!
@@Amateur_Pool Competitive play gets to everyone. If it didn't, we would never relish a win. And even pros have up-down seasons, weeks, days. Keep the faith, we have it in you! And best of luck for your Q'fier to Vegas!
@@cj-ef1rp thanks!
James Walker actor - character was JJ - Good Times was the show. I was an avid fan of the show. Fun fact the abused girl that got adopted was played by Janet Jackson. Michael Jackson's sister.
that is a fun fact. I never knew that
He has a strong Fargo for a S/L 6
Ya.. he plays pretty good, for sure
Good match. I'm just getting back to APA after a long time away. Good to watch you two play.
Thanks! I appreciate the support!
With the tables where I play, who made the felt is meaningless. About a week after being recovered they are all glossy anyway and in winter it is playing on glass and in spring/summer it is like playing on a plush towel (the felt feels like it swells from humidity).
i've played in bars like that. Tough conditions, for sure
Bro I am 53 on Sunday and I still play the circle game. I got a bunch of my work buddies coming off an elevator. Like 6 of them all at the same time. BAM! got you fools. We all had a good laugh over it.
Lol... it never gets old! I have a pair of dress socks with circle game hands on them. If I'm wearing them, i never missed an opportunity to say "check out my socks" lol
the sound was good.
Thanks for doing this. appreciated
Thank you for watching! I appreciate it also!
2:50 you jumped up on this shot. I would love to see you work on staying down. Just some advice from an old rail bird.
and, great advice it is! Thank you
@23:12 I was a 5 in APA when I played and I noticed I was much more creative than most 6/7s I played. Bank the 3 off the rail to the 9/2 2 off the 12 in the side. The angle on 2/12 is a bit tight, but I think it could go.
Diamonds rails make them so fast, and the only thing Predator makes well is cues.....
I appreciate if you could take the time and answer my question. As a newly joined member of the amateur league, if you are skill level 7, what is the process to become a professional pool player? Aside from skill, do you need to win tournaments to qualify?
I'm not 100% sure on that.. i think you can just start playing pro events, if you're good enough. When you start winning them, or placing high enough, people will consider you a pro
Thanks for your response, wish you all the best @@Amateur_Pool
@@adelalami7203 thanks! You also!
JJ on Good Times. Kid Dynomite.. LOL
Lol, yup
It’s crazy to me the difference between a 6/7 in some regions vs 6/7s in other regions. I hate that the handicap is based on how much you win vs how you play. Even though i know they can’t watch everyone play lol
ya, there are differences for sure. When you get out to Vegas, you can tell what areas have strong shooters and which areas don't
Handicap is based on pulling it out of the air. And everytime you beat a better player you are a sandbagger. They didn't play bad you are under handicap. A 6 gets one game from a 7 in a race to 7 so there is basically no difference. Also they never move i got moved to a 6 from a 5 because i beat an 11 ,5 nothing. The fact that some how they hung the 9 3 times and i made the 9 on the break and then a quick combo. I had 7 shots in 5 games i was still a 5. Next time i played them they won 11 1 did they drop my handicap nope. If handicaps are real they should move. The worst is if you beat a long time 7 that is now really a 5. The complaining is non stop. You win you are sandbagging if you lose you are sandbagging.
James Evans Jr, let’s have some “Good Times”, “That’s Dynamite!” JJ. Okay, Jimmie Walker.
Dyn-o-mite !!
Keep up these videos, they're entertaining and sometimes instructive.
As to your question about the pool scene in Alaska... I don't know but I'm pretty sure they have an APA franchise up there. And Mike Bender, one of the best custom cue makers around, lives there. Also just remembered Thomas Wayne another good custom cue maker is in Alaska as well.
Thanks, Steve! A few people have commented to let me know there is a pretty good pool scene up in AK! I appreciate the support!
When you get big enough to give stuff away I want a Dimond pool table lol
@@stumps420grow3 lol... how about 3?
I was a 6. This guy I played was listed a 5! Basically, he broke and ran three games in a row for the win. I shot, maybe twice! I found out later that he plays in the APA league as a 9 or something. He hustled everyone in the TAP league. I renamed him Mr 5. He didn't like that. LoL
Lol.. that's some pretty bad sandbagging
In my local APA league we also only had to mark pockets during playoffs… never did it during the regular session.
i agree that everyone skill level 2 through 6 has a chance in Vegas.. sevens not so much, an average 7 can not compete with high level 7s... high level 7s that range from 650 to 730 fargo!! we have a few of those here "725" fargo that has won vegas several times and has been runner up many times!! He gives your base level 7s the 5 out in 9 ball and kills them!
Yup.. he's a super 7.. that's partly why the apa is for beginners, and not the upper level amature.
He should have defensed the 3ball into the top right corner on that first rack.
Good call
Jimmy walker as J J,in good times.
Dynomite
Twenty percent of the time, it works 80 percent of the time. 😝😝
That's right, Ricky Bobby, lol
he went by Jimmie Walker but official name was James Walker Jr.
DYNO-MITE !
Josh. Don’t stop singing! It’s the reason I watch these videos. I have a disease. And the cure is more more Josh singing. Haha
LOL - MORE COWBELL!!
Good luck on your qualifier! I’ve got TriCup in SC with both of my 8ball teams.
Thanks! Good luck to you as well!
Can you imagine if Apa was played on 9 ft diamonds? People would be playing for days. Valley tables are a blessing for lesser players. Good work Josh.
Ya, would take WAY longer on 9ft tables, lol! Thanks, James
Most southern states Apa is played on 9ft diamonds
@@joshuaspivy1821 🤔
I live in Connecticut, own a 9’ and would prefer playing on 9’ or 8’. Smaller then that it’s like fighting a tiger in a phone boot. If you don’t know what a telephone booth is…..well what can I say. I’ll go take my nap.
@Michael-mp8hh lol... i always say, 9 is more of a shooters game and 8 is more of a position game
I've been to Alaska and I don't remember seeing any pool tables there. I was visiting the smaller towns. I did not do the capital. I think if they have a pool hall it is in the capital. The rest of the towns are just not big enough. A pub sure... pool hall nope.
I would like to go there 1 day, just to visit. I've been to 48 of 50 states (AK and HI are missing)
Josh, at 27:08, why 3 rail kick? You could do midpoint method 2 rail kick into the 2. Why overcomplicate?
I saw that 3 rail angle. Also, I typically find that more rails leaves a little more room for error. Anyways, not sure I would have done any better with a 2 rail kick
31:49 highlight of the match hahahaha
Lol 😆
Up 3-1 playing the nine up the corner - Woof!
I dog a lot of shots
Have to say the errors in pattern play and shot misses indicate a 6
Mine too! lol.. It's hard to gauge anyone from 1 match alone.
Good luck. Hope you qualified
I did qualify for 8 and 9 ball, but i have since decided to never play apa again. Check out why... ruclips.net/video/cDSaouJ-sEE/видео.htmlsi=WupIg-5RlpF6ecW3
Apa has league in Alaska
Sweet!
After winning your fourth match, and getting on the hill, why did your opponent break the next rack? I have only been APA for one year (next month) but I thought the winner always broke. I’m just a little confused.
Ya, if you notice, he wins that rack and i broke the next one.. i somehow flip flopped those to racks when i edited it. Can't believe i didn't catch it before i posted it! Smh
I think Ol Bill there got himself a look with little Timmy in game 5 😂
LOL - I noticed that too, lol
For some reason valley with simonis still plays slower than diamond with simonis
Maybe it's the rails?
It's all interpretation, but Bill is probably a 6.4, but we don't use decimals in APA. That said, the handicapping system did as intended. Equalized the game. You had the lead, but failed to close it out.
I know Bill pretty well. Seen him play a lot. He's a good shot. Also, you sound like you could be a company man 😁
@@Amateur_Pool - Ouch! Now that said if I really were a company man...mark my words, you'd be reinstated ASAP.
@cdsersd2d lol.. well, i appreciate that! I know the APA is keeping a close eye on my channel, because of all this crap with my suspension. Doesn't mean i should act like a paranoid crackhead, lol.. my bad
Just look at the gut size. 100% determines how good people are on these videos. :)
Lol.. if that were true, I'd be a pro... huge gut, lol
thats funny about toyz r us shopped there great video
Lol.. thanks!
Good luck to you Josha great video of course. I think maybe sound is better in the room but comfort is more important lol. Keep up the good work!
Thanks James!
Hey Josh. Help me with this. Your opinion. A 9 ft poolplayer verses a 6 ft valley player. I am putting you on the spot here. Please dont say depends on the table size. Give your boy a straight answer. Please dont say depends on the table size. Seems to me , nobody has a answer. Let me say it another way. Both would play a set on a 8 footer. Thanks big dogg!
table size wouldn't make a difference. It would depend who is the better pool player. assuming both are at the exact same skill level, I would probably lean towards the one that plays on the 9ft table, as it hone's your focus a little more (having to make the longer shots)
And your audio sounds great to me. However, it sounded good from your basement also. You can get some nice acoustic panels for your walls, which I have done in my Media Room. You can get some nice decorative ones, or even once with your own pictures blown up and two acoustic panels. They’re really nice.
I think it's my composite floor.. thought about putting in carpet tiles.. thanks!
Sound is better now. No echo. Doin gooood lil arms 😂❤
LOL, nice! I commentated it in another room!
rough outcome sir... def a tough 6 to play.. he did really well. keep up the good content!
Thank you!
APA is a fantastic pyramid scheme.
A league I'll NEVER play in.
I'm right there with ya.. i was not only supporting them, but also advertising for them (at no charge), and they treated me like sh%t.. APA can digest a satchel of Richards for all i care anymore..
Great video. Why did your break when Billy won his second match?
i flip flopped that rack and the next rack. Not sure how I didn't catch it, smh!
No worries.. Thought i was losing my mind :)
@@Amateur_Pool
@@JustMe-ut5rn good news, you weren't losing your mind, i was, lol
Do breaks switch players in your APA league?
Nope.. i mixed up 2 racks in editing.. lol

Ya, to help you win the game...
to me, and from how our hall shoots in MD, it looks like you both are 6's

25:12 what tip do you use to shoot and jump?
shooting stick has a sniper soft tip. It makes jumping with my playing cue next to impossible but, in this case, I only had to hop a small piece of the ball so, it wasn't too bad.
Not sure if he's a 6 Josh...just don't go chasing waterfalls lol
Lol 😂🤣
Nice shot on the 2
Thanks!
Dman Lil Joshy you called me out a lot in this video - hahaha - all i can think of for MKX is mortal kombat X - i just had a question on rack 7 after he won why did you end up breaking?
Lol.. i messed up the editing. If you notice, he wins that rack and i break in the next one. Somehow i flip flopped those 2 racks in editing and missed it when i commentated.. 🙄 lol
@Amateur_Pool yea I was thrush off when I saw you breaking..
@timscott178 ya.. can't believe i missed it, lol
No, you’re the best! Thanks for sharing
Awww, shucks!! Thank you
@32:30 That's what she said.
That's funny! Only a few people have noticed that part, lol
I understand your pain great match tho

1st game...you missed an opportunity to play safe on the 14. Jmo
I'm sure you're right! As an amateur, who is still learning, i miss a lot of opportunities! Lol.. thanks for watching, Lonnie
@@Amateur_Pool I don't play anymore so watching is all have...APA screwed me over as well and I quit shortly after. We had a real good team of 9 ball that had a shot to go to Vegas. Nope.. you looked at the wrong Google results. His shirt logo is further down in the Google results. That's a bad ass game though!
@ 34:33 Why did billy break with you winning that rack to put you on the hill?
something got messed up in editing. If you notice, he won that rack that you are referencing but, I broke the next one. It looks like I get those to racks flip flopped somehow! Good catch! I didn't even notice it when I was commentating
Why did Bill break the last rack?
I flip flopped 2 racks in there, somehow. I didn't think it was the last rack though. There is a rack where i win, the he breaks and then he wins that game and i break next. That was just an accident when i edited the match (and i somehow missed it, lol)
more like a and 5 than 6 and 7, i guess it is regional
ya, it's probably regional. I probably beat some folks from your region when I took second at APA nationals last year
Well based on the first 2 games I didn't see anything at all that was worthy of being a 7.....
From either of us!
Billy Gaffney is 581 fargo!? Yea. Legit question. Why are you giving him a game. lol When you tried the 10 carom off the 8 you had a 1 rail kick on the 13. In the hill-hill game you could've played the safe on the 11. Basically play the shot you did not to make the 11 but just snuggle up to the 14. Carry on man. Love the channel.
Thanks man! I agree with what you're saying. I blew that hill-hill game! smh
Table needs to be leveled.
Yes.. i noticed a couple of rolls
Good luck in your qualifier. Playing in my own today as well.
Thanks! Good luck to you also!
So how'd you do?
@@LopingCSF on my home now. I won my bracket. Qualified for Regionals.
Billy is a 6 at the most, he missed 3 kicks by quite a bit and his banking is not very strong either. 7 being the top level makes him a 6 or strong 5, you didn't play well and lost a game with 2 or 3 ball in hands. If you don't play well then a weaker player now becomes a threat. It was yours for the taking but you couldn't close it out after a few chances. Josh is definitely better than Billy and in pretty much every aspect of the game but one thing that any ranking system doesn't account for is choking. Easy to win the easy wins, it's the tough ones that make you a money player.
Well said!
Why was Billy breaking on rack 6 when you won rack 5? You broke on rack 7, alternate format? I thought this was APA?
Exactly the question that I came here to ask . LOL . Winner breaks in APA . What's up here , Josh . Did you cut something out, like an illegal break and scratch that flipped the break to Billy ?
someone else pointed this out also. Something got messed up when I edited it and, I didn't catch it. when the score was 1 to 4, he broke (when I should have). The next rack, I broke when he should have. I flip flopped those 2 racks somehow.
Jj on good times
