Love the whole setting. Best integrated backdrop of any model railway I have seen. Looks like north Wales
I travelled extensively on the GWR in the 40's with my mother. Notable things: There were lamps everywhere and they were red, not white. Tank engines didn't have top feed. I'm nitpicking, what you have created is superb. I wish I could do as well.
Thank you. I’m interested in the comment re lamps. I was aware there was a period when the GWR shifted from red lamps to white but I wasn’t quite sure when. I assume there was a period where they ran both. Can you shed any more light?
@@Frithamj I believe the change occured in 1948 when British Rail came into existance. There would obviously have been a transition period but I doubt whether anybody can tell you how long.

I’ve only just come across your channel, I must say it’s looking great. Some of the shots of the loco’s at the coaling stage looked superb.
Loved the the buildings and scenery you’ve made a fantastic job and is something I can’t wait to get into on my own layout.

Hi, really impressed by your build. Im yet to get to actually doing thr scenic laying, so I'm looking at yours with both awe and fear at trying to get to this level. Im interested to see more of the techniques used and watching your videos for inspiration along with others of course, all procrastination in reality 😂
Inspiring stuff mate. Still in planning for my future « retirement project », but I do like the idéaux building scenery before the track. Some of the shots of the sections with completed scenery but a bare track bed really looked like demolition underway un the 60’s 70’s! Seems strangely more logical somehow to lay your track into a completed scene, tether than laying the track and building the scenery around it afterwards. I think that somehow shows through in the pictures once the trains are running. I too am a fan of 1:1 planning. I drew out my entire layout plan in chalk on the floor of my cellar for my last layout before building baseboards. It worked very well. Looking forward to seeing the next installments. Subscribed !
PS if you’ve got a track plan somewhere I’d be interested as we seem to have similar tastes and an area about the same size…

Really fantastic work, glad I found your channel. I too am a big fan of Chadwick and his work. He actually unknowingly encouraged me to get me back to building my layout. I'll do it modular as I do not have the dedicated space. But working on a section or two linked together will at least keep me going and as he says, "keep the mojo".
It's funny that you have lots of GWR and your brother has lots of LMS as I have lots of both of those. So just 2 days ago I printed an old map of the two networks to see where they overlapped and I could credibly use all my stock on a hybrid area like Oxford!!!
Are you going to motorise your turntable? If so would like to know what you use.
Have you retrofitted any of your older trains to DCC AND sound? If so what sound decoder did you use? Just getting back into the hobby the choices are overwhelming.

The turntable is a Peco turntable and I have the Peco motor but not got round to wiring it all up yet… it’s on the list :)

This looks a fine new venture with a positive progression of events. The one minor niggle for me is the lack of superelevation on the sharpish end curves of the running lines. I admit to nitpicking here but this feature plays a big part of most running lines in real life.
If I could change one thing and go back to do it would have been that. I might redo that bit down the line.

What is the black foam you used on the baseboard?
It’s the Woodland Scenics track bed
Admire your attention to detail but are you missing the fun element of running trains ?
It’s nice now that I’ve got all the track working as I can have trains running whilst I am modelling and developing the scenics.
Thankfully I’ve got a fridge in the room with the railway so the odd hour slips by watching trains and sipping a beer.
Very good modeling, design and photography. I enjoyed the whole video with trepidation - scared that it might all be ruined - until towards the end you did it. You used the word “PROTOTYPICAL”. Why do all rail modelers use this word? It drives me mad! “It’s our little word, and we’re going to use it!” If you look it up it means “Representing the earliest iteration of the subject”. And that is not the context that modelers use it. They really just mean “typical” or “the usual”. I agree that Charlie of Chadwick model railways is a great inspiration and source of knowledge. Until he started saying it too! So, I challenged him on it, and he started using it more and more to annoy me. “OK Charlie” I said. “It’s your RUclips channel, you can do what you like”. I also can do what I like, and I can unsubscribe.

In a modelling context doesn't it mean 'mimicking the real world example or practice'?
It doesn't really mean 'typical' or the 'usual' because if you're modelling something very specific such as a particular location, or say, a particular industrial railway, what is prototypical might be unique to that subject.
I think it's an acceptable shorthand for copying the real thing, surely we all know what's meant when used.
The conceit is that the real thing is the prototype (earliest iteration, in your words) of the model.
@@nickrails It doesn't particularly bother me, but I'd argue that it's not shorthand for anything -- it's longhand for the simple "realistic".
