Fritham Junction - A GWR Layout in the 1940's - 'Just running trains for #TwitterModelTrainShow'
Просмотров 3 тыс.Год назад
Fritham Junction is slowly coming along however I've paused building to run some trains. In this video you'll see a selection of GWR locos and rolling stock. I've not had time to weather, detail and finish a number of locos and stock so be warned there is plenty of locos running with the wrong lamp codes, no drivers, potentially unrealistic formations etc, however the first rule of modelling ap...

Your layout looks great with great attention to details resulting in a realistic railway. However, the realism is lost when you show close ups s of locos and it becomes apparent that they don’t have crew figures! I did notice that some locos have crew fitted but there is no driver in your railcar and your tank engines etc.
Love the whole setting. Best integrated backdrop of any model railway I have seen. Looks like north Wales
Great show, thanks 👍👍👍👍. Loved the 'Cathedral', only the second time I've seen it modelled. I believe Cathedral was intended for the Kings, but word got out, so Kings they became.
Inspirational! Thanks for posting. Like the scenay before track approach, it works! Congratukations!
Thank you for those kind words… it’s been fun but challenging.
That goods yard is brilliantly done. I'm amazed you just played and got to that finish... Imagine if it hadnt have worked! Lol
Hi, really impressed by your build. Im yet to get to actually doing thr scenic laying, so I'm looking at yours with both awe and fear at trying to get to this level. Im interested to see more of the techniques used and watching your videos for inspiration along with others of course, all procrastination in reality 😂
Yeh great scenic work. Inspirational stuff . Noticed the bag of grout, what was that used for?
Hello, I've learned of this channel from your great Twitter account. Wonderful video, I liked the inclusion of the lessons learned and found the construction diary of your new layout informative. It's a lovely design and I look forward to seeing more of it as you develop it. All the best.
Thank you for that. Bit of personal indulgence being able to share it , glad it’s helpful/ enjoyable :)
What is the Cathedral class comprised of?
It was apparently a class that was drawn but never built. This model is based on a Princess body and various changes made to the appearance
Thank you for showing us the early stages and your final triumph. I guess there's hope for us all!!!
Hello over there🎉 loving your layout❤...amazing what you have done . Warm Regards Elizabeth@Tauraco00
Are you on RMWeb?
Not yet
👍
Please make more long form videos I really want to see how you make your scenery!
Will do. Some of the scenics are in the first two videos on my channel. 👍
This is an Epic build - also Great documentary skills - I would deffo be procrastinating about all that wiring 🥱 but you seem to have it all sorted, tho it doesn’t look quite as complicated as Charlie Bishops circuit boards 😜😆
Absolutely Fab - I’m a big 4 fan, especially GWR - using old photos as reference makes the Consists come to life So to speak - this really is (dare I Say it) Pendon museum Standards for Sure 🏆👍🏻✨
How do you like the Heljan 47xx and the Dapol 51xx?
I like them both. The Night Owl was a bit of a test of some corners which helped me improve the track work. The Dapol 51XX is lovely. Nice weight and great detail.
Very enjoyable viewing, thanks for uploading. I look forward to the next episode! Cheers John
Highly convincing scenes. An impressive journey. Did you mean to say "chuffed" so much as a pun?
Would it be possible to use your channel as an example in an art gcse study? (Full credit would be given obviously)
Yes no problemsn
Just found your channel but layout looks great. Subbed 👍
Thank you :)
Really glad I came across your channel. I'm planning a small industrial layout and have been searching for a method to achieve that degree of realism in ballasting the goods yard area. Great work, thanks for sharing. Also, I'm with you on baseboard height - what height did you settle on in the end?
What a beautiful layout. You should be proud 👏.
Thank you :)
Some really enjoyable running shots, it’s a lovely layout and I’m looking forward to the progression, cheers for now, John
Thanks John, much appreciated.
Looks an amazing layout you have created, what is the 3rd coach on the "Pitchford Hall" parcels train, the "Cream & chocolate" one?
Thanks. It’s a Hawksworth full brake by hornby.
Wiring that lot must have been a challenge.
It still is… not quite yet overcome but close :)
Inspiring stuff mate. Still in planning for my future « retirement project », but I do like the idéaux building scenery before the track. Some of the shots of the sections with completed scenery but a bare track bed really looked like demolition underway un the 60’s 70’s! Seems strangely more logical somehow to lay your track into a completed scene, tether than laying the track and building the scenery around it afterwards. I think that somehow shows through in the pictures once the trains are running. I too am a fan of 1:1 planning. I drew out my entire layout plan in chalk on the floor of my cellar for my last layout before building baseboards. It worked very well. Looking forward to seeing the next installments. Subscribed ! PS if you’ve got a track plan somewhere I’d be interested as we seem to have similar tastes and an area about the same size…
Good luck with the new layout, and thank you for the comments. Enjoying actually being able to run trains now :)
Really fantastic work, glad I found your channel. I too am a big fan of Chadwick and his work. He actually unknowingly encouraged me to get me back to building my layout. I'll do it modular as I do not have the dedicated space. But working on a section or two linked together will at least keep me going and as he says, "keep the mojo". It's funny that you have lots of GWR and your brother has lots of LMS as I have lots of both of those. So just 2 days ago I printed an old map of the two networks to see where they overlapped and I could credibly use all my stock on a hybrid area like Oxford!!! Are you going to motorise your turntable? If so would like to know what you use. Have you retrofitted any of your older trains to DCC AND sound? If so what sound decoder did you use? Just getting back into the hobby the choices are overwhelming.
Thanks for the comments and yes, Oxford area is ideal for running a mix of locos from all big four companies. The turntable is a Peco turntable and I have the Peco motor but not got round to wiring it all up yet… it’s on the list :)
What is it with rail modelers. Not three sentences in and you are using your “special little word” again - PROTOTYPICAL. You all do it. And it’s nonsense. If you look it up, it means “representing the earliest iteration” of a subject. You lot keep using it just to mean “TYPICAL”. It really winds me up, and yet another reason I look at a new rail modeling sites with fear and trepidation.
Im gonna be a bit biased here lol. The British, UK layouts seem to be of higher standard than those in US lol. Sorry US guys🤪lol as for this layout, its exceptionally well done. Great job on tbe weathering the shunting and goods areas and back drop. As i looked at your progress couldnt help but notice an area by station thats so wide on board that i was a bit concerned for you sake about reaching critical maintenance areas where arms length reach was almost out of reach for working repair functions. I still dread the day i must cut and lift out hard to reach areas for repair jobs. Otherwise splendid job on that setup, it makes one feel immersed into that era in time and into the daily happenings in railway work
Glad you have enjoyed it. Thankfully I can access most elements from one side or the other but I must admit I put a lot of effort in to the track to avoid derailments in certain sections.
@@Frithamj i have enjoyed it certainly. Well i think we all dislike derailments at any given area of our layouts and taking time and effort to avoid them by laying the track securely and properly, is key to success and enjoy the hobby and our layouts which afterall is the point of the hobby.
Excellent. So what height did you decide on the for the baseboard in the end?
It’s about 4, 10”
This looks a fine new venture with a positive progression of events. The one minor niggle for me is the lack of superelevation on the sharpish end curves of the running lines. I admit to nitpicking here but this feature plays a big part of most running lines in real life.
If I could change one thing and go back to do it would have been that. I might redo that bit down the line.
Beautiful layout, lovely buildings and scenery. I've subscribed! Rgds, Joachim
Thank you. I’ll keep the videos coming as fast as I can :)
What is the black foam you used on the baseboard?
It’s the Woodland Scenics track bed
Very good modeling, design and photography. I enjoyed the whole video with trepidation - scared that it might all be ruined - until towards the end you did it. You used the word “PROTOTYPICAL”. Why do all rail modelers use this word? It drives me mad! “It’s our little word, and we’re going to use it!” If you look it up it means “Representing the earliest iteration of the subject”. And that is not the context that modelers use it. They really just mean “typical” or “the usual”. I agree that Charlie of Chadwick model railways is a great inspiration and source of knowledge. Until he started saying it too! So, I challenged him on it, and he started using it more and more to annoy me. “OK Charlie” I said. “It’s your RUclips channel, you can do what you like”. I also can do what I like, and I can unsubscribe.
Thanks for those comments and really helpful. I remember Charlie mentioned the word’ in a video and picked up some ‘constructive feedback’… I’ll do my best to refrain in future!
In a modelling context doesn't it mean 'mimicking the real world example or practice'? It doesn't really mean 'typical' or the 'usual' because if you're modelling something very specific such as a particular location, or say, a particular industrial railway, what is prototypical might be unique to that subject. I think it's an acceptable shorthand for copying the real thing, surely we all know what's meant when used.
The conceit is that the real thing is the prototype (earliest iteration, in your words) of the model.
@@nickrails It doesn't particularly bother me, but I'd argue that it's not shorthand for anything -- it's longhand for the simple "realistic".
Excellent. Similar in feel to the model railway I'm building (Frontington and Backwoods), though yours is a lot further along and quite a bit bigger! Glad to see you're having fun as well as making progress. I'll be keeping an eye on your channel for future updates!
Thanks Matthew, very much about building something I can be proud of but also as you saying enjoying it and not taking it too seriously… I have a job for that ! :) Good luck with your layout look forwards to seeing it.
Absolutely incredible layout, it’s easily one of the best out there, and I especially love the goods shed, it’s absolutely stunning!
Thank you for those kind comments, lots more work to do :)
@@Frithamj good luck to you as well, I hope you enjoy finishing your layout :)
Great story: exceedingly well done. Greetings from a quite warm Melbourne on the other side of the world, but I was in the UK recently. Great country!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. Lived in Melbourne for 3 winters, fond memories and a lovely place.
Credit to you. We'll done.
Thanks Peter
Great video. Goods yard ballasting is the best I have seen. I love the Redbridge layout too, not far from me so I recognise parts of it.
Thank you that’s kind, it’s been a Labour of love. Redbridge is great. Could have watched for hours.
Really good update, the ballasting is a masterpiece, it looks so authentic, so well done there! I really like the goods shed, it’s a lovely model and you’ve made it look really good with the cattle dock. The backscene has given the layout some depth too, it looked great as the trains ran by. Really looking forward to the next update and maybe the the completion of the signal box and engine shed. Cheers for now, Merry Christmas, cheers, John
Thank you for all of that feedback. It’s coming on slowly even if slightly hindered by a busy work schedule. Have a good Christmas.
Fantastic! Great to see an update of this layout! I'm starting my GWR 1930's Branchline right now. Lots of research and planning so far! Great video, thanks for showing!
Thank you, I'm going to try and do shorter but more regular updates now. Good luck with the new layout :)
Really hope there's more to come. Great work
There is a second video on my channel if you’ve seen it?
@@Frithamj just watched it. Looking great. Hoping to finish my shed this year to put a small layout in it. Your layout provides Great inspiration
I travelled extensively on the GWR in the 40's with my mother. Notable things: There were lamps everywhere and they were red, not white. Tank engines didn't have top feed. I'm nitpicking, what you have created is superb. I wish I could do as well.
Thank you. I’m interested in the comment re lamps. I was aware there was a period when the GWR shifted from red lamps to white but I wasn’t quite sure when. I assume there was a period where they ran both. Can you shed any more light?
@@Frithamj I believe the change occured in 1948 when British Rail came into existance. There would obviously have been a transition period but I doubt whether anybody can tell you how long.
I found this which is a photo from 1940 with white lamps www.warwickshirerailways.com/gwr/gwrhb2963.htm
Admire your attention to detail but are you missing the fun element of running trains ?
It’s nice now that I’ve got all the track working as I can have trains running whilst I am modelling and developing the scenics. Thankfully I’ve got a fridge in the room with the railway so the odd hour slips by watching trains and sipping a beer.
Excellent video! very concise with lots of detailed information, well narrated, looking forward to seeing more updates, subscribed 🤓
Many thanks :)
I’ve only just come across your channel, I must say it’s looking great. Some of the shots of the loco’s at the coaling stage looked superb. Loved the the buildings and scenery you’ve made a fantastic job and is something I can’t wait to get into on my own layout. I shall look forward to further updates, cheers for now, John
Thanks John. I need to get an update video done in the next couple of weeks as a few more developments :)
Brilliant, so much detail and so realistic.
Thank you, it’s taken a bit of time
One word - Inspiring
Thank you
This is brilliant. Almost as good as Everard Junction!
Not quite… that’s a phenomenal piece of work and as good movie making skills
