Thanks for the tutorial dude, definitely going to make this. Wanted a Neo Geo X for ages, but the price was just WAY too much for what they wanted.
But this is what the Neo Geo Mini should have been.
You'd think these console makers would embrace the raspberry pi and simply sell packs of roms of their games. This would ensure we would get the best quality roms available and the game designers would still make a little money. I built a retropi console a few months ago, I gotta say, it's better most of the mini consoles I've seen.
Almost had a heart attack when I thought it was an actual AES . Good workaround.

You're getting undervoltage warnings because your power supply is not up to the job. This is throttling your CPU, so you aren't getting the speed the RPi 3b is capable of. If you don't believe me, log onto the pi via SSH or open a terminal locally and run 'vcgencmd get_throttled', any result other than 'throttled=0x0' means the cpu has throttled.
So the solution? Heavy'er power supply?
For the power issue. I have found using the original neogeo X PSU. Just add turbo mode to the pi config menu. Problem solved and so far no issues. Pi is a lot faster now. Enjoy. No mods needed to the case.
Love my neogeo X. Living the dream with save states and all the capcom play games.

The NeoGeo X got a bad rap. I still have my launch NeoGeo X jail broken and its fucking wonderful. I have every Neo Geo game as well as SNES, Genesis, PSone, GBA, Master System, Atari 2600. Internet neck beards made sure this great piece of hardware never stood a chance.
Is there any way to put the controller dongles inside the case? It kills the looks on the outside like that.
Great video ..I have the full Neo Geo X System ..A awesome console ..but just like you said by pulling the plug it lacks on adding more games to the library which is a total bummer ..and we all know it can be modded but i dont want to take away the retroness of the console ..I like this idea ..plus by doing it like the way you did it ..if i ever want to put it back to its original form ..it wont take much
maybe the undervoltage warnings isn't because the power supply isn't enought powerful. In my case, with a pi 3b+ I was getting undervoltage warnings using the official PSU and the problem was the splitter USB cable included in the Aliexpress kit. You can check this connecting the PSU directly to the PI. The solution is feed the PI from the internal pins of the barrel connector and left the aliexpress power micro USB cable out of use.

Following your example, I actually set about doing this myself--it worked relatively well, except for the constant undervoltage warnings. Could you recommend a power cable off Amazon (as much fun as it is waiting 2 weeks for one from Aliexpress)?
I want a Neo Geo big time. Many vacation spots and pizza joints had these arcade machines. World Heroes was awesome - loved the Blue and Red characters BRRRRRRRRAAHHHHH!

I can’t believe people are selling these for 300 dollars. I remember when it came out. I didn’t get one because it’s still just an emulator. There wasn’t any actual NeoGeo hardware in it. Please don’t pay anyone more than 100 bucks for one of those

I want do this so much but I don't find how to install or what software I need for the Pi system to play this to install that only think I can't figure out I saw a lot on get hub but a lot of file nonsense but not tell me what I need or how to do it.
Since the Pi Zero W plays Neo-Geo quite well you could probably use one of those too

@8 bit flashback what am I doing wrong? I have zipped NeoGeo roms and they show up in the retropie library but don't work when selected. It just attempts to load then kicks you back to the selection screen! Should the roms be in designated folders that are unzipped or does that not matter?
Might need the neo geo bios in the bios folder for it work correctly

I have a similar story about world heroes I too played it a a pizza place. But I was lucky enough to learn that they released it on the snes not just world heroes but samurai showdown and art of fighting were also on the snes but they definitely look way better on the neogeo

with a Pi3B+ if you use the aliexpress kit you will get undervoltage warnings almost all time. the micro USB splitter cable will trigger voltage drop.

Hi. I have followed the steps and everything is ok. But if you connected the base to the TV via HDMI and Mini HDMI to HDMI adapter, it doesn't give me signal. Instead if you directly connected the HDMI cable from the TV to the Raspberry if you see it. Which may be due? Thank you

I built one of these and was pretty disappointed. Maybe there is a fix of some sort I don’t know about. Firstly the input lag from the Neo Geo X joystick was horrible. Secondly the lightning bolt icon was constantly popping up in the top right corner indicating improper voltage to the pie. I even tried getting a larger usb power adapter that could handle higher amperage. Still no good. Anyone else have these issues?
Route your power input directly to pi 3 for a test to see if you get improvement.
I have the same issue will try a few high amp usb adaptors i have lying around but think its the low guage cables im using to connect it all up
You get undervoltage logo or massage because of neogeo x case not from your power adapter v6 2.5A or 3A it's ok ... to solve the problem you should make the power to raspberry directly or from inside the neogeo x case remove the tow wire red and black from the border after power switch and make an USB head to the raspberry :)
I went ahead and bought all of the gear to make one of these and I have the same issues as you Mike. I can't get the neo geo arcade stick to work at all as well. It works fine on my mac but not detecting in retropie. I'll have a play around and see how it goes. Any tips are welcome :)

I’ll try pi 3 a+, it depends on how to position the micro usb wire, but not being of good workmanship, the lightning will appear at the top right as in the video where the pi3 warns you "under voltage detect".

the real neogeo wasnt too much.. a adult.gamer with a job.can afford the system in the 90s it was like a powerful gaming pc.back in the day.. ofcourse no parent will buy for a kid tho...dont know why alot of people are saying that this console was for millinores only. at that time. is complete bullshit..
thats because most of us gamers are in the millenial era where we wouldn't be able to afford. In a way it was for better off people because to spend that amount in those days on a kid was a no when you know as a parent you had mortgages and whatever else. Unless you had a good job
it was lke a powerfull gaming PC..back in the day...only adult gamers can afford a neo geo in the 90s...but saying that it was a console for the rich is a complete bullshit..these youtubers should explain better..
It was 650$ and it was the early 90s, with inflation that's like saying anyone could swing a 1300$ console today if they had a job, games cost hundreds of dollars a piece too. I don't know what you think we were making back then but a $200 snes was considered brutal back then lol you need to stop.

naahh for a adult gamer in the 90s you can save up in the bank for 3-5 months...there you go..now you now afford a neo geo console if you was a hardcore arcade gamer...is was like buying a used old piece of shit of car back in the ninetys ..for 600-800 dollars (there was a exaggeration... mainly from children and kids in the 90s..

You can also order the replica controllers. Work fine with the pi, once you config them.
snk probably never see this coming, they make a better case than a console.

Yes it can but it would need a different adapter for the USB power input I'll probably do a video on that in the future

I tried with a 3b+ and the unit couldn't provide enough power to boot up when plugged in to the neo x power unit, I did have a 3 amp charger but it seems the unit can only output what the neo x can provide . I unplugged the hdmi through the neo geo X and plugged hdmi directly from 3b+ to tv and pi powered on but showed low voltage. In the end I cut hole in the back of the neo case and powered unit on directly and hdmi direct then linked the usb from pi to neo geo. Long story short usb on front of neo Geo X works but the power switch doesn't as pi is powered directly rather than through the neo case.
What about the power supply?
Looks awesome, do you reckon there is enough space in there to fit a USB HDD? Very tempted to put something like this together but was considering using it for media as well and would need a lot more space!
It could fit but be pretty tight squeeze. High end Flash drive would be better

Does the pi overheat inside that box? I don't see any vents.
It's not airtight in the case and on top of that Neo Geo doesn't really push the limits of the Raspberry Pi 3 but if you wanted to you could add some heatsinks to help cool it off

i just built one of these but customised a lot just to be ocd.
i put a heatsink fan on my pi to draw the heat away. i cut a hole inside of the lid of the case and put another fan to direct air to the small vent holes that are at the back of the case. there are holes there its not just to look like vents from the back.
my theme has videos so the pi gets warm if it is running a theme with videos. it is also warm during say an hour of play if being played during summer months i recommend cooling it somehow like i did. i shall put a video up of the build in a few weeks and go into it in more detail.

Its a Neo Geo X case only not hardware. Also it should be noted that the Neo Geo X is not an official Neo Geo or SNK product it's just licensed by them and manufactured by Tommo.
