I have a Raspberry Pi running RetroPie connected to my TV. I play old console games with my 13-year old daughter. I bought two USB official Sega Genesis controllers and we play Mortal Kombat II together. A 30+ year old game I played with I was young. Now she beats me almost every time and she says it's her favourite game. It's awesome.

I've been working with Pi's since 2015. I have about 20 of them in almost every form and then some. I mainly use them for RetroPie. I have built images, downloaded images, and there really isn't anything new to them in terms of RetroPie. But, this video almost made them feel new to me after watching. I have never done the achievements and just might try that out. I also think it time that I generate a new image from scratch as those are the most fun. You guys really make it seem easy, and it actually is. There are a ton of areas to get into the weeds quickly though. But, you stayed away from that. Great video for a first timer who knows nothing about RetroPie and the Raspberry Pi!

I like that RetroAchievements shows indicators in the bottom right corner of Achievements that you can get in the level. For instance in Zelda LttP, when you are fighting Moldorm in the Tower of Hera, it shows 2 possible achievements, no damage and kill Moldorm in under 20 seconds. If you don't defeat Moldorm quickly or get hit, the indicators vanish, letting you know that you can't get them.

I love RetroPi. I set mine up so the ROMs folder is symbolicly linked to a folder on my NAS. This way it gets backed up. I have way more storage space there and if I need to add a ROM or set up a new Pi, it's easy. I just install my custom image and everything is there.

Very detailed tutorial, thanks a bunch!
One problem I had following the tutorial was that I copied all the ROMS from my PC into the ROMS folder on the PI, without realizing that they need to go into subfolders corresponding to the type of game / console (nes - Nintendo Entertainment System, snes - Super Nintendo Entertainment System, n64 - Nintendo 64, gb - Game Boy / Game Boy Color, gba - Game Boy Advance, etc). In the tutorial, the ROMS folder they copied on the PI, already had the mentioned subfolders.
    Still awesome video, thank you!

I built an Old Dell OptiPlex 3020 with Bactocera which is very similar to this and my 4-year-old loves to play the older games with me.
It's became very fun configuring it to the way you want
I think I have spent over 20 hours setting this up
It's great to get it set to how you want, so then it makes it easier to copy the setup for another computer.

      @nate6862 3 месяца назад

Yeah, a video in 2024 about Retropie is certainly a choice, that project hasn't seen any quality of life changes in like 5+ years? Meanwhile Batocera has regular updates and they probably could have cut this video in half due to not having to tweak and adjust things in retropie in multiple different places (not to mention actual Pi5 compatibility). Oh that option, you need to change that in emulationstation, that option is configured in retroarch, this other option is found one of the labyrinth of options that is retropie setup.

Burning a image from retropie's website using etcher is easier than what you propose here. Also, use the keyboard to configure the Pi, and you do not have to deal with weird controls! A easyer method to transfer ROMs to the PI is format a USB drive and place an retropie folder in the root... stick it to a USB port on the Pi and it will create all the folders you need for all the emulators you have installed. Take the thumb drive and copy the roms to it using your computer. Stick it back on the Pi and let it copy the files from the USB stick to the SD Card. This way you do not have to deal with network transfers, SSH, hostname and password.

I got allthree to work, and I honestly don't know which of the first two I like better--RecalBox and Batocera are both amazing. OK, so the Good thing about this video is, ; the explanatory method used, _pretty awesome,_ if like me; I have had, and diddling around with _r/pie_ for pretty-much over a decade, however, my using _Raspberry Pi_ was purely for arcade unit builds, going into basic setups and configuring the menu for the playability narrative for trading, nonetheless; personally iv always dreamt of going *deep down and dirty* into the complete configurations on every level, but just could not afford the time to explore the pies' rhetoric configuration; _EXPLORATION_ was not the premise I was heading for ... *_BUT_* ... this video smacks me up-side the head, now I feel like a retropie virgin not gunna lie. I do believe this is now one of my favourite videos alongside *ETA PRIMEs* tutorials ... so clear concise and informative, bless you Young man... *SUBBED*

Re: Managing ROMs I'd just recommend getting FileZilla setting up and connecting with SSH the same way you did in the terminal. Then just drag and drop. Way simpler than scp.

You can even play some PC games. I flashed Windows 11 Pro arm64 and got Tanuki Justice running at full speed without over clocking. Android 14 is pretty cool too. I like having all 3 OS's. Windows, Linux and Android all in one machine. I use the 4B 8GB in the Vilros Keyboard TouchPad Hub. It's like a Stealthy Black C64.

Tou gotta use a PW manager, no matter the brand. Ive been with lastpass for over 10years, pre android, as i use to have to use a dolphin plugin to access my LP back then.
But a manager is a must. But a physical book isnt a bad idea if your not leaving it in a public office.
As a password book left next to your pc at home isnt the worst issue you have if someone has got to your actual pc.

Big fan here chuck❤️! I am expecting an N+ course from you here on RUclips. I love the way you teach, I am working as an IT help desk, I am so interested in Cyber Security, so I wanna enhance my knowledge in Networking before going for Cyber Security. Please do some magic and create an N+ course for the poor us.

Just wanna add something for everyone out there following along, when you transfer the ROMs via scp, you have to throw the ROMs in the correct folder of the console. so if you have an N64 game you need to throw the ROM from your host into the /retropie/rom/n64 folder etc..

Hello everyone. I have the following problem, when I go into the Retro pi settings or generally into the settings like Wlan, Bloutooth I always have a background that does not go away. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

An old computer with athird gen Intel i7 witch is 30$, a 1030 or 1050 or 1050ti or rx 480-470x witch is also about 30$ used , and you can install a linux distro or lightweight windows, download a rom dump of 300-400gb, and you can do all this and more , probably even emulate ps2 in x4 and play pc games up to gta 5 all for the same price or cheaper than a pi 5 , only inconvenience is the size but you can probably hide it behind your tv or something

Setting up that 2nd gamepad is a bit of a confusing endeavor as many of the retroarch keybindings are default on some config files.

Where is a list of the games available? Does it have Goldeneye or WWF Wrestlefest(Arcade) ?

    • @JozhMc

With a Pi 4 golden eye it is possible however requires a fair bit of work and potential overlocking and additional configuration I’m sure it would be better performance on a Pi 5

If your os crashes occasionally and some of the menu options don't work try redoing the retro pi os system installation on your raspberry pi. Also don't forget to "set up" the retropie system lol, I'm dumb

I did the older method for a while, but these new functions are looks fun! Also worth mention you should put your raspberry into a retro-console-looks case eg a superpi case from retroflag (oh, and don't forget to add some heatsink to your pie!) and also you could set up the shutdown button with a small python script. Rpi is still a fun platform to messing with :)
