Simple Circuit Bending on a Studiologic Numa Compact 2

  • I got a new keyboard! The Studiologic Numa Compact is a great combination stage piano/synthesizer that has bi-timbral voicing, 4 simultaneous built-in FX plus reverb, and studiologic's great organ emulations. The only issue I have with it is that the filter control is very fiddly, being located on a spring-loaded joystick. This simple hack installs a potentiometer and switch on the front panel to allow fine control of the filter frequency on all patches.

Thanks for the reply! Nice upgrade you made with the MOD switch and knob.

Thanks for this video! I am too much of a tech noob to even try this myself (but I totally like the idea - and maybe, someday, I will gather the nerve).

This is a very cool solution. I own the Numa Compact 2x, and I can achieve the same filter control using the drawbar sliders (the leftmost 2 sliders). It is useful in tweaking piano patches. Your Compact 2 does not have drawbars, so your solution is brilliant.

THANK YOU for this video! Very interesting look to the joystick assembly! I think you're the first one on RUclips who peeked into this keyboard lol
I had it a while ago and I also always wondered if it was possible to send a different MIDI signal (e.g. modulation) from one of the directions of Stick 1. To me it doesn't make any sense that both directions control pitch bend.

Yes, that would be a nice mod to make it more Roland-esque with a single pitch/mod stick. In theory it's possible if you cut the traces and use mod wire to swap the center pins of each pot. However being spring loaded, stick 1 would start the mod range somewhere in the middle rather than at zero. Interesting thought!

@@extralifedisco That's a good observation. Maybe it could be possible to set the middle point as zero and use both halves of the stick to control two different parameters (kinda like Korg's joysticks), although the sticks are small already and the resolution would be quite low. Otherwise it could be nice to use another Stick 2 as Stick 1 rotated 90° counterclockwise.

Hii! it is an incredible improvement. I have a Numacompact since a year ago, and I can say that it is an all-terrain piano, it withstands a lot of "mistreatment", and invites you to disassemble it to see what is inside. I'm going to try to do the same as you, so I have an excuse to reopen it. I look forward to the next improvement of this great keyboard. (by the way, do you know if you can change the keys for some hammer action ones, for example put the ones from the sl88?, I think it would be the perfect keyboard.)
ps: can you tell me what components you used? and the welding plane? those two extra cables that come out, where do you connect them?
    thanks for your attention

With that level of quality I am shocked to see a Microsoft optical mouse. Why not upgrade to Logitech?

Ha, I've had a few mice through the years. The logitech ones mostly seem to have that "soft touch" butylene nitrate rubber overmolding that's so popular now. In my experience it turns to sticky goop after a year or two so I avoid it. The MS intellimouse was one of the first good consumer optical mice, came out in the 90s, this one is a bit later but they all seem to be absolutely indestructible.

Dearest I really enjoyed your mod. I now own the same piano and I feel like I should try this after the warranty expires. I have a question tho. When I trigger key B4 aftertouch, there is a distinct click noise, almost like a switch. Do you have the same issue?

I need to clean the contacts on my Numa 2x. I have been working in a Cigar Bar. And am getting bad load velocity sounding. Can you help with disassembly of the keyboard bed?

    • @extralifedisco
      @extralifedisco  4 месяца назад +1

Haven't gotten under the key bed, but it's a fatar model (studiologic is the same company) so should be easy enough. Once you get the case top open, the screws along the forward edge of the bottom case can be removed to free the keyboard assembly.
I found studio logic's customer support very helpful as well when emailing them about some software questions

Hey man can you shed some light on how to go about opening up the top bar of the keyboard safely?

You must remove most of the screws in the lower case then carefully lift up the panel. There are some wires connecting the main PCBs to the panel so the can't lift it all the way to without disconnecting those, though I don't find that necessary
