I serve during the day and practice at night too☺️ I’m only 5 weeks into school but can totally agree with how it’s harder being an online student, especially after studying at STLCC and MSU in actual classrooms face to face with teachers and students. I love your content, you are my Court Reporting mentor 😍😝
90% of people who go into court reporting classes drop out, that's why this job pays alot and easy to get employed for a job because it's rare for people to pass
Facts!!!! Dropped out after first semester. If you have a family and job, which you need to pay for school, it's difficult to study and find that balance. Would love to go back and complete. Also NY schools are expensive!!!!
One question I've always had is what kind of homework assignments should I expect if I go to court reporting school? Do you set aside 4 hours for practicing AND separate hours for homework or is practicing considered the homework?
Hello! Sorry I am just now getting back to you, I was on a small weekend vacation. So when I was in the program I was assigned lessons online that I could practice on my machine. It was just recordings and I would have to practice them until I got 95% or better.
we were required to practice at least 20-25 hours a week It was like having a second job. The time we spent in class did not count either. It was a lot.
@@courtneytaylor1841 I actually didn't go to a school, but rather did it all online before my school closed so I am not sure how to answer that question, but it is expected about 20 to 25 hours a week.
Hey great video! Is court reporting hard on the hands and body? I want to attend school this year and worry that I will get tendonitis or other fatigue injuries from constantly typing 24-7. Do you have any advice?
Honestly I’m sure you could, but there are exercises you could do to help prevent that! Also good posture helps! I say if you want to try it give it a go! It’s great money!
I’ve been a reporter 26 years and never one issue, but I go to the gym and do a bunch of exercises to keep my back strong. No issues w my hands ever. You have to write without bouncing your wrists
Do you know anything about digital court reporter? My local community college is offering a certificate course and I want more info on it but can’t find much on RUclips
Yes! I did the course all online! It was extremely hard so beware of how much time it’s going to take! I decided it wasn’t what I wanted to do for a career but it can be a great career!
I’m a court reporting school drop out and I’m disappointed about that. I had one more speed to qualify for state, but I just couldn’t finish the program because life happened. It really sucks because I had potential.
Yeah I was kinda similar! I tested out at 200 wpm. I just knew I didn’t see myself doing that as a career. I’m really happy I decided to go in another direction!
Is a contested hearing conducted the same way by the court reporter, or is there any difference in how it is conducted compared to a standard deposition? I have only done typical depositions. I am a new reporter and have my first contested hearing Thursday. Any advice? I don't know what to expect. Will I also be the one swearing the witness in like I usually do in the other depositions? Thanks for the help.
I am actually not sure when it comes to contested hearing... I'm sorry I can't be more help but I just went to school for court reporting and hearing and typing the 225 wpm. Good luck with everything though!
I saw online that you can become a court reporter with an English degree, is that true? I’m graduating in May and am interested in law and court reporting.
nu_lily91 I’m sure you can! You can take online classes to become a certified reporter! I think it depends on how motivated you are to complete the program! They are very short handed with reporters so if you’re interested I say go for it!
I'm super interested in becoming a court reporter and have been watching your videos. It seems like they're all from 2 years ago so did you ever finish school and become a court reporter??? dying to hear how this all turned out
I didn’t finish! I tested out at 200 wpm and my school ended up closing! Instead of transferring my credits, I decided to apply for loan forgiveness and go a different route! Everything happens for a reason and I’m really content with how it all unfolded!
I have actually heard of a lot, but I don't know enough about them to really give a good opinion! You could always request an add on a secret facebook page called Encouraging Court Reporter, because that page has tons of students, teachers, and current and past reporter that are willing to advise you and talk you through some issues you might have!
@@BayleeHagerman Thanks -- I'll be sure to check that out! Are there a few examples of online programs that you have that I could look into? I just found out about a free training program in my home town that I'm going to try to sign up for. Very exciting!!
I'm a current student at Madison Area Technical College (located in Madison, WI) and I highly recommend their online program. They charge in-state tuition for everyone that does it, and it's been an amazing program! I'm almost halfway through and my instructors are incredible.
Savannah Ownby I’m considering attending the court reporting program there! Although, I am unsure whether or not to attend the classes in person or take them online. I don’t know if I have the determination, will power or concentration to spend hours learning at home where there’s endless distractions. I feel like a classroom setting might keep me more focused and also allow me to ask whatever questions that may arise during the lessons. Even though I live 45 min away from MATC, I would have to up-and-move to the Madison area if I choose to attend the classes. Therefore, I’m conflicted on which path to take. Im wondering what are the pros and cons of taking the course online Vs attending the classes? (Side note: I have ADHD which could contribute to the effectiveness of either option.)
Hello! I am a freshman in college majoring in education and English. I did a bit of research as I am unsure if I’d like to stay in education, and now I’m interested in court reporting. I was wondering if you might have some words of advice for a person in my situation? Would it be a bad decision to switch my major and school? Have you talked to someone in my situation, who changed majors that way? Thank you very much for this video as well it was very informative! Edit: I was also wondering (but forgot to mention) do you think court reporting is a dying profession? It seems like they’re in demand, but do you think new technology will someday replace court reporters?
Im going to digital court reporting school in a month.
i am thinking about learning how to become a court reporter and this is the only POSITIVE thing i’ve seen on the internet so far lol!!
Aw you should definitely go for it! It’s a lot of practice and hard work but it’s great money!
Been doing it 27 years and no regrets!

As a #proofreader for cour reporters, I hear so many good things about #courtreporting from my clients. It definitely seems it is a good career path.
