I’m Chloe’s mom. I’ve been a court reporter since age 19. I’m still completely in love with it, 36 years later. I work in court and feel like I’m watching a movie during a trial all the time. I highly recommend this career. It’s worth looking into for sure!
Hi ladies! I just started researching this career, and through the website posted, I found out tuition in California is going to cost around 60,000, and can take around 43 months. Does that seem reasonable/normal to you guys? I haven't messaged the college yet to get more info, but this just seems almost as expensive and time consuming as just getting a bachelor's. I'm really trying to avoid school debt, so, do you guys recommend searching for a cheaper program, or could this college be my only option? Thank you guys!
@@vivafree5070 I’m not from Cali, but I’m sure there are online programs that would be sooo much less. If that is an online program, find another one. My schooling was extremely reasonable, like out of pocket reasonable, so I’m sure there are options! Mine was also in person which seems to be more expensive
I’m so glad you made this video! I’m finally growing up at 36, thanks to becoming a Mom. I’ve always been interested in this field and your video is definitely inspiring! I’m glad you mentioned the relevancies because I was afraid the job was going to be replaced with AI. Thanks so much!
I’m 41 years old, I came to USA 12 years ago, I learned English and now that I speak English fluently and adding my first Spanish language as a plus to this career that I’m expecting to perform in a few months, earn money as freelance and by the way, I got into this course all paid off from workers comp award that I got from working for a Aviation company.
Such a great video! I'm a freelance reporter in Canada and love it so much! I also want to put a plug in for doing realtime during legal proceedings. Your pay will increase exponentially, and it's an amazing thing to add to your career! Great job spreading the word about court reporting!
Stenographers are extremely skilled individuals and I'm sure it takes a lot of hard work with education, training and work experience to become one. I've seen a few Stenographer ladies type and it's like magic Lol, they're actual Wizards or witches if you'd say Lol😄 Lots of respect to all Stenographers out there and your contributions and services to our judicial system and courts 👍 👏
I think I might have finally found the niche job I've been looking for! I do normal keyboard speed typing just for fun and honestly just want a way to spend more of my time building this muscle. Also, a small handful of people can type 225 WPM on a normal keyboard, obviously this is impractical day in and day out though!!
Hi Chloe, your video series helped me decide to switch careers. They are really thorough and well thought out. So I've enrolled in a court reporting program that offers both degrees (AAA and BAS). However, I'm not certain this is the right school because they are terribly short staffed that my advisor takes 8 weeks to answer a question let alone won't book an appt. I trust they will work out the kinks but most importantly, there was no indication that I needed a steno machine on Day 1. Could you post a video on what things you considered when choosing a school? And if there are any good schools that offer online degrees? Building speed and accuracy are critical so it would be great to know if this is better done in a class setting or if it can be done online too. I'm also curious if you and your mom (even other court reporters) foresee any changes in the technology (steno machines, software, etc). Steno machines are a pricy investment that I wonder if new tech features could make these machines outdated in the next 1-2 years. I have more questions about the school experience so far, it would be awesome if you're free to chat offline. Thanks for sharing your knowledge & advice!!!!
Thanks for reaching out!! So glad you are moving forward with court reporting. It sounds like the program maybe didn’t prepare you as much as they should when getting started, but you do need a machine for school to build speed and just overall learn the machine. You can maybe reach out to a court reporter and see if they have an old machine you can borrow, as sometime students just have a loaner for school. I can do a video answering the rest of the questions! Hope this helps 😊
I remember thinking court reporters were olympic level athletes of the typing world because I type around 90-100 wpm and tpying a converstion in real time was impossible for me and they was doing it for hours. Then I found out about steno keyboard and everything made since.
Thank you so much for all this info. It is very helpful. I am planning to go back to school and I am not sure on what to go for, either court reporter or medical assistant.
I went to court reporting school and obtained my associates in court reporting and captioning in 2004. I did mostly CART work until 2011. However, I married and completely stopped. I am interested in jumping back in but my speed is shot. Any suggestions on how to get back into the field since it has been so long and I’m sure so much has changed

I can't entirely agree with you on digital court reporting. To me, it seems that many "traditional" court reports are afraid of change. I am interested in learning both for a variety of reasons. At any rate, thank you for the video and the information.
“Digital court reporting”? I was talking about methods that don’t involve a reporter at all, for instance using other digital means to create a record. There have been many instances in which jurisdictions have tried that and it has led to faulty outcomes. Not sure what you meant about “traditional” court reporters, but yes, some reporters don’t update their technology, which I think should be considered often. So interesting❤
Do you happen to know of a good school in CT??
Hi Chloe what school did u attend
Is this in America? Cause where I’m from I don’t think you need any certification
Really? That's weird
I m indian, how i
learn courta reporting course?
There are online courses for court reporting! 😊
What school did u go to
It is no longer open, unfortunately :(
I already want to quit. It’s so hard!!!
Do I need to know a lot of English to work as a court reporter? Because I have an interview soon and I understand English a lot, I live here but I'm definitely not perfect in grammar or in hard words in English so I don't know if I'm going to be good at it.
1:17 Writing, not typing! You are writing steno, not typing it ❤
Usually female? That's kinda sexist.
I am stating a fact. It is not sexist to state whether there is a stronger female demographic in this career. There are men, of course! And we need more of them, but usually on tv shows/movies, you see a lady as the stenographer.
