- Anyone that has been through the process or if you are going through the process right now, practicing is so important in court reporting school. I struggled myself in the beginning so I hope that you find this to be helpful. xoxo Baylee Nicole.

Good job. As a reporter for 46 years, I can suggest you get the finger exercise book sold on Amazon. It’s been around since before I was a student. I still use it. Also, break down the problem words. Such as AB/TKOE/PHEPB. Write AB/AB/AB at least 5 times as fast as you can. Then the 2nd stroke, DOE/DOE/DOE. Then PHEPB at least 5 times. Then write AB/TKOE at least 5 times as fast as you can. Then TKOE/PHEPB 5 times, then put the strokes together. This method was taught to me by Arnold Cohen when I was a student. I asked him if he had a short form for abdomen. He said no, do the above method. I said but there must be hundreds of words that are hard. I thought he was nuts. (Btw, he and his twin brother Bill were each 3x National Speed Champions in the 1950s.) I then realized that by so doing, I was killing multiple birds with one stroke. (Pardon the pun. I love birds.). Why? Because how many other words begin with the AB sound? How many words have DOE in them? I think you get my drift. One final thing. Ted talks on RUclips are great, especially with the ability to go 1.25 speed or faster if you can. Best of luck.
Hi what’s the name of this book
I need to know the name of the book!! This sounds so beneficial.
@@kroert2259 stenotype finger technique on Amazon.
Thank you. A reminder to practice is important! I've been a free-lance court reporter now for seven years and I still practice almost every day, but it helped to listen to this as a reminder for how significant it is.
I've been a reporter for 35 years, and I still practice every day! I love writing on my steno machine. :-)
That is really good to hear. Sometimes I get really discouraged and knowing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel helps me keep moving forward. Did you experience similar situations when you were going through the schooling process?
@@rallion9945 I'm happy to talk steno, and I'm in California. E-mail me please! careerluv@gmail.com
Same here. I worked in CA and retired from there and now live in MN. And I still practice every day and develop and learn new briefs all the time. When I was in school for court reporting I practiced every spare moment I had. I averaged about six hours a day.
That looks totally alien. It's like you are learning how to communicate with aliens using their keyboard as their language and alphabet would be totally different from ours. I would say you are a stenographer instead of court reporter because court sounds rather sinister
It's all worth it in the end!! I have been a court reporter for 23 years and still love it. And the pay is awesome for part-time hours. And for some odd reason, it has only gotten busier in the last year with the pandemic and remote depos. Good luck!!
Part time pay at LASC is insanely good.
That was very encouraging- So back in 2007 I started Court Reporting school from an online school called Penn Foster- It came with my steno writer called Stentura protege- cassette tapes and some Cd's - got started but life was hectic still raising kids and jobs and family took over- I quit 12 yrs ago and now I just pulled everything out again. I am 55 now and I am starting from scratch all over again. I have been inspired by your video- jealous of your machine- how updated!! mine still has the paper and the tray! but I bought it back in the day and Here I go again. I hope I have what it takes now--- I will follow your progress Baylee!
and 200 wpm ! how awesome
Lorrie Rodriguez oh my goodness thank you! You are so empowering and I hope I am like that at your age! My mom is 50 and just went back to school for coding and I commend anyone who has the courage to take their life by the reins and create a better future for themselves! Good luck with everything and please stay in touch! I’d love to hear about your progress!
Lorrie, update us on your progress.
I went through court reporting school in 2 years. You should really practice about 40 words faster than what you're testing at! It is super helpful!
The Real Macaw thank you!! I have actually heard that! Good to know!
I’ve been a reporter for 35 years and practice never ends. I completed Brown College in 19 months, though now I wish I’d completed a bachelors somewhere.
Yes that's what I've been told! Thank you for your comment. If you don't mind me asking, why do you wish you had completed your bachelors?
You know, i was always curious as to how stenographers and court reporters type so fast, considering the emotions of the testimonies and accents, words and so on, and then i googled how court reporting works, and after looking at what you guys do, I must say it's a fantastic talent and such a unique skill!!! big fan from Dubai, UAE!!! Cheers
I am sure she totally appreciates your kind words. Going through court reporting school is so very challenging. I am a working reporter and just started a new RUclips channel with similar content. Check me out when you get a chance. I will be posting more steno-related content soon! JayKim Love is my RUclips channel!
Great tips! I work full time as well. 9-5 and I'm on call every other weekend so every minute I have goes into practicing. I just moved up to 160. Gonna take your advice and get up two hours earlier. Thanks for sharing your methods of practice!
oh thank you so much!!! Good luck with everything!!!
I work from 4am-12pm at LAX and waking up at 2am is tough. At least I get to practice on my breaks and some more after work.
I'm on theory 1 and I don't think I am expected to know a lot besides practicing what's on my homework. Correct me if I am wrong. Thank you!!!
Just found this video and I am really thinking about pursuing this career. Thank you so much for making this!
Did you end up doing it?
Wow....thank you for your honesty. Pamela in Detroit
And Court TV is a great practice.
That sounds like a good idea.
ABSOLUTELY Excellent practicing. Pamela in Detroit I dropped out. Couldn't get speed due to repeating words in my mind.
Good advice. Thank you. Pamela in Detroit
Your method of study is very helpful. Thankyou.
I think the video is helpful in seeing the amount of time it takes. What I would have liked to have seen is how words are made because i know you do not use the standard alphabet to form words and i want to know how you actually creating word by recording a an actual transcription. I am interested in becoming a court reporter and i just want to get an idea of what transcribing looks like and if it is something i would feel comfortable doing....thank you for your videos because for me anyway I find seeing the act of it is so much more helpful than reading about it...

what brand and model of writer are you using in this video?
Hey just wanna say your video was really good, thank you!
Evans Morales oh wow thank you so much!! That means more than you know!
Thank you. This video has helped me out a lot.
May i.ask? What type of shorthand are you using in your class? Thank you.
Use p - f for perfect. Great lesson
Duane Navarra aw thank you so much!!
P-F is better for paragraphing a line down.
I use PRAF/PRAF for paragraph, but P-F is a lot easier
Could you please make a video on add translation and add new words.
Please, I m new with Plover.
I’m learning with Plover too!!! Just started 2 days ago ☺️
Are you enrolled on an online program? If so can you please let me know where?
Hi iam from india how many days get to learn this all skill which it is fast to regular stengraphy?
I'd love to know more. What's the job outlook where you're at? Can you make more vids on steno
How are you doing now. Still in school. Pamela in Detroit
Did you ever complete the program or get certified?
She quit lol
How much does steno machine cost?
mine came with my school loans when I enrolled, but I believe that machine cost me about 2,500
May i know what theory you're using??
this should be universal keyboard system. why it isn't?
What theory did you learn?
I learned Real-Time Coach!
@@BayleeHagerman Thanks
Which model writer do you have?
Sarah Januski I believe I just have the new wave!
How. Ate you doing. Pamela in Detroit
I want this machine
It's actually for sale!
How can i get it?
Bipul Mishra how much would you pay for it? You’ll have to either venmo or PayPal me and I will ship it to you
@@BayleeHagerman did you sell this yet??
@@melissaibarra9950 not yet!!!
I really hope you normally use a tripod.
How long did it take you to get to 200wpm?
Doug Benner I’m not going to lie, but a while.. About 3 years. I took my theory classes a couple times because I struggled. Once I got past those though I excelled and have since.
@@BayleeHagerman That's commendable -- working and still practicing four hours a day. The 10,000 hour rule is at play.
I love your accent!!! New subbie, would love to support one another
Bethannie Cook haha that’s the first time I’ve ever been told that! Thank you so much and yes I definitely will support and subscribe 💕
Hello ,, my name is Sunil from India .. my age 22 year ,, i teach Steno ... 100 word per minute .... And i feel disappointed 😞 because .. i have no govrment job in court .. my dream became goog Stenographer ...... When i saw your utube chanal I feel happy ... Because u are very good and beautiful 😘
Do you like my real-time coach? I’ve been looking into that! Do you feel like it’s worth it?
Sarah Januski yeah for the most part I do! I really haven’t tried anything else so Im not sure about comparing, but yeah it’s been pretty easy!
Don't use real time coach. It's a waste of money. Use Mark Kislingbury's Magnum Steno Club. Much more content to practice with, and it's only $30 a month.

I'd say stenographer not court reporter as court sounds rather sinister and unhappy
your first 2 tips were basically "just practice".... what a waste of a vid lol
I am stenograpgher for information help in speed
