You learned a powerful life lesson. You are more powerful than the people you left behind trapped and dying in their gilded corporate prison. I hope the money is truly worth it for them. In short: horrible experience! 3 out of 5 of my room mates were burned out or were on medical leave and I remember saying goodbye to someone leaving the company almost on a weekly basis. Toxic, horrible work environment. But when you are young (20's/ 30's) you think that you have to "sell" yourself to get ahead, which is not true at all. Currently, I have my own small law firm. I help people, and I am appreciated. And I make enough money to buy my first home.

Lawyers tragically are slaves not to money but to status. Just tell any fellow lawyer 'if I had a chance to work for double the. Money as a bin man I would happily do so and watch their face'. This description of Biglaw is absolutely uncanny. It is not only the norm that you will sacrifice your own health and relationships in order to clock as many billables as possible, it is the expectation. There is no such thing as a family emergency, a holiday, a vacation, or a weekend. There are certainly outliers who are willing to make those sacrifices or manage to end up on a unicorn team, but I have yet to meet a lawyer who regretted quitting their Biglaw job. Best night of sleep I ever got was right after I put in my two weeks' notice.

This resonates with me and my experience in medicine. I went to medical school in my 30's, didn't come from a well off background, and worked extremely hard to become a doctor because I wanted to help people. I graduated during the pandemic, and believe it or not I found myself feeling morally drained and that clear vision of helping people in the way I envisioned became so much murkier. I am not sure what I want to do with my career at this point. I really appreciate you sharing your story, thank you!

That is why having your own job is the best, since working for someone means they own you for that amount of time to do a certain task. If you fail, pat yourself on the back and acknowledge the fact that you got further than most people, because most people aren't willing to try due to the fear of failure.

Thank you so much for your story 🙏🏾 I’m a staff sergeant in the Air Force Active Duty & I became serious about my finances after getting into over $50K in debt. I was basically trying to keep up with the Jones. My prospective on money changed dramatically. Living within your means & saving $500-$1000 month is critical. Saving for retirement is critical. Owning a piece of real estate is critical. I’m currently 25 years old & I hope to be debt free by 30 ! I learned a valuable lesson !

I know that almost noone can see to the heart of this argument, but I believe that passive income is one the major problems in our society. Income is truly never passive. Someone is actively creating that income. The person who is creating that income is also most likely getting much less that he/she created. Just because I'm stronger, tougher, and a better combatant than you doesn't mean that I should take advantage of you. The same should be said about income.

It means everything to me that I can spend as much time with my son as possible, really know him and what’s going on in his life, know his friends, and have him know that he is incredibly loved, important, and absolutely the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Erika, that fact you accomplished law school & passed the bar exam is a feat to itself. I'm so glad you set your priorities (the value of time & family). Too many place their self worth on where they work & how much they earn, but forget that in exchange, the boss dictates their time leading to a poor quality of life with just paying more taxes & accomplishing someone or some entity (in your case, the Big law firm) goals. It takes a lot of courage to fly away from the flock, but all who accomplished their dreams dare to fly higher than the rest setting out their own destiny.
