  • How exactly does the fibre we eat help to build diversity and increase numbers of beneficial bacteria? this is exactly how it happens.
    When we eat fibre, it can be soluble fibre, insoluble fibre or resistant starch. This is indigestible as we do not produce the enzyme cellulase (unlike a cow for example) in our guts, but is vital FOOD for the 30 Trillion + bacteria that reside in our gut.
    When we eat these PREBIOTIC fibres in our food, the PROBIOTIC of beneficial bacteria that reside predominantly in our large intestine use this FIBRE for food.
    The beneficial bacteria ferment the fibre to make substances called POSTBIOTICS.
    POSTBIOTICS are things like short, chain fatty acids (SCFA)), which include butyrate, proprionate and acetate. These SCFA are the perfect food for the cells lining are gut called COLONOCYTES. Since these cells replicate and renew every 3 to 5 days, they need a constant supply of energy in order to do this.
    Short chain fatty acids also have beneficial functions in the body, such as reducing inflammation.
