    This is my motor. I am very lucky to have you building it. You bring more to the table than anyone I know. Your expertise is very impressive. I can't wait to see the rest of the series. I check everyday for new videos. I feel like a kid checking the mailbox everyday waiting for my Orphan Annie Secret Society decoder pin. It is exciting to see my motor finally coming together. I can't thank you enough.

      Meh, some of this goes way over peoples heads and they can't grasp it. There are both rebuilders and parts changers. Parts changers dislike all the fancy math real rebuilders need to know.

    Definitely some good tricks to know on the old girl.
    Set a cross bolt main caps wouldn't hurt either but they're a bit pricey that have MFG up and then machined in.
    I used to do that to my Cobra Jets.
    It's all in the heads ,
    get some good cylinder heads on her that flow.
    Even though it's a standard Duty engine I would definitely put a high volume pump on there with a good oil drive shaft from Moroso or somebody.
    Weld on extra little box to your oil pan to give you at least two more quarts volume,
    And use a Holley carburetor jet restriction on number 3 bolt on the rocker arm shaft so you don't fill up your valve covers with all your oil.
    You could likely get away easily with a Cobra Jet can grind on it also.

    Rescued a vintage oval-track 71 Ford Mustang from a scrap pile that I’m currently restoring. It came with a 390 with a 3 speed transmission out of the car. I know these videos were a few years ago, but if you’re out there I’ll appreciate anything I can pick up from from watching. Right now I just want to get it fitted in the car which is gonna be a task, it’s a Chevelle chassis, oil pan doesn’t clear steering linkage. Got a lot of challenges ahead and taking my time. Excited that I found your channel. Thanks for sharing your skills.

    I built one I used in a 67 Mustang on a 1/4 mile flat paved oval. It was my first car and was crap, but I was 26 and knew 390s by that time. I managed to nail together a killer one. Some might find the build interesting because I used data that could maybe still be found. In the spring of 1983 Hot Rod magazine did a story on a 390 powered Fairlane tearing up dirt tracks in Northern California (iirc). The article was titled "390 To Go." What made the car amazing was the motor, a 390 stomping all the small block Camaros. In that article I found the oil system mods that will get MORE oil to the mains. Oil to the mains is the weak link in the FE, and is why the side oiller exists. I imagine most good FE builders know the oil mods, and 3 years pounding on my motor seeing 6 grand twice every lap says they work. The bearings were always still there every time I went in and looked.
    Then for power I used Fords Muscle Parts catalog from 1968 (iirc). Stuffed full of builds for all factory supported engines I built mine to a spec I called a "baby 427." The oil system mods require going to a mech cam, and that frees up a lot of excellent cam grinds. I chose a PAW (That's right that PAW! lol) grind that was with in lift rules and close to old factory mech 427 specs. This cam fit with the Ford recommendations, and the Ford machining specs got the compression where I wanted it with legal flat top pistons. This was the expensive part as it required the intake be machined on 4 surfaces. It was a beast with (illegal) port matched GT Mustang heads (3 bolt exhaust port) and stock manifolds and carb. It lived for 3 hard seasons freshened up twice with a custom (very crude) kick out and baffled oil pan I made. I sold the engine and it ended up in a dirt track car in Nevada and won a local championship in a much better car. My car skills were not yet there, I did later learn how to win. But I made a great 390 by gawd. I've built better engines since, but only because I had better rules and more money.

    One of my favorite personal engine builds was taking a 360 FE , boring it 0.060 over & dropping 390 crank & rods in it. I almost blew out a disk in my back just trying to lift the bare block up to go to machine. A comp cam RV bumpstick and a 10.5 compression ratio made it a real stump puller. Most important part is opening up the oil galleys on the FE because it will run out of oil at 4000 rpm.

    • @jesseduke694
      @jesseduke694 3 года назад

      I see you commented 3 yrs ago but if your still out there, is your claim of running short on oil at 4000 with a standard volume pump or high volume pump???

    • @BustedWalletGarage
      @BustedWalletGarage 3 года назад +1

      @@jesseduke694 it doesn’t literally run out of oil but the life of the rings and rod bearings are shorten quite a bit if you get a stock bottom end of a FE to hang out over 4500 rpm for a few minutes.

    • @jesseduke694
      @jesseduke694 3 года назад

      @@BustedWalletGarage i understand what your saying. I was just curious if that claim was intended for stock volume or high volume? I know they need help in the oiling department at rpms

    • @BustedWalletGarage
      @BustedWalletGarage 3 года назад

      @@jesseduke694 every time I’ve seen a high volume oil pump on a street car the oil pressure goes to zero when it accelerates. You have to use a very expensive oil pan to prevent that and they usually don’t fit in the car well. The stock Ford oil pump can be modified by shimming the internal pressure relief valve and you can get a few extra psi while still using the stock pan.

    Exactly right on the soap and water. Solvents will simply break a particle loose, clean it and allow it to redeposit even deeper. Dish soap is actually a detergent. Detergents keep the particles suspended allowing them to be rinsed away. I wouldn't go near a builder that didn't use soap and water. I have personally removed casting sand from blocks with soap, I'm sure you have as well.

    the old 292/312s had a notorious reputation for eating upper valvetrain parts, so bad so j.c. whitney offered an external line oiling-kit that utilized a block takeoff, brake-style lines and access holes drilled thru the valve-covers. the new "FE" was not to have these problems so they restricted oil from the bottom-end forcing it to the top. of course the designed for racing side-oiler sidestepped this major issue.

    I worked at an engine shop over twenty years ago, so I can understand what your doing. We worked on all sorts of engines, but the whole time I was there, nobody ever brought in a 340 Plymouth, could you do one of those please, even a 355 or 360 would be okay

    The valley usually cracks first if the engine froze it's the weakest part and I saw one that the machine shop rebuilt the engine and put the head gaskets on backward , The steam cracked the valley and that engine turned blue so it was Toast .

    The Ford TSB said it was not recommended to align main bearing holes because it may over lube bearing and crank and lower oil pressure in other areas of the engine.

    The back side freeze plug to keep the cam in is what way installed? Then with 390 to 427 the cam bearings are different no? The 427 had grooved bearings which are diff than the sideoiler. You stated this was to be a full tell all an missing this one part has left me a lil in the dark. I've built many engines NO Machine work always did it by farming out. So when came back plugs were in an bearings of the cam as well. I'd like to see °ALL the steps an sadly you left this out an I know they are supposed to be easy but seeing is learning.

    I have been wanting to start a project car for a long time, it will probably end up being a 67 or 68 Cougar. Even if I get a small block car I will be tempted to put a rebuilt FE engine in it but I am curious what the difference in weight is from say a factory stock 302 to a tricked out 390 with aluminum head and intake. For some reason I always think of the big blocks as the heaviest engines but doubt if that is true in all cases.

    Supposedly the reason for the mismatch in main bearing oiling holes is to force more oil to the bearings as the oil travels from front to rear. One book has the size drills to check the restriction size, all being different. This is in regards to the 390 up FE. When someone did that to a block I had, the block cracked where it was ground and up the passage. Just sayin'. The only way I know to clean a block is WITH SOAP AND WATER, preferably hot water.
