I, for one, actually loved this movie. I was in High School when this came out and I was just the biggest Jennifer Garner fan because of Alias. Certainly, there are many things that could have been improved but I think Jennifer did her best with the material she was given. She certainly pulled off the cold-blooded assassin look with the red costume and her expertise with the sai is unmatched! This movie will always have a special place in my heart.
The action scenes are like a shampoo commercial, with her hair flying all over the place. (I remember reading a quote from Garner admitting that she just had to follow the choreography because she could never see anything with her hair in her face all the time like that.) She only ties it back when she's NOT fighting.
For me, it is a good film with an East Asian-like atmosphere. I watched it several times and always enjoyed it, despite various flaws. A lot better than all the Michael Bay-like later MCU stuff.
To be completely honest I didn’t think it was that bad at all now there definitely some things that could have been better but I also it could have been a lot worse. Like I said earlier I prefer the director’s cut over the theatrical cut and I actually consider Elektra director’s cut to be one of the most underrated comic book movies of all time. I would much rather watch this over captain marvel or black widow any day.
@@SteveBrant55 the director’s cut add a lot of more character depth and building moments especially to Elektra herself and just story wise as a hold. the movie just feels a lot better then the poorly edited theatrical cut and plus you do get some nice r rated kills as definitely check it out when you get the chance to
Garner wasn't bad as Electra....she did the best with what she was given. The series did her story much better. Thanks for revisiting this; it's a great reminder why I never watched it🙂.
I honestly liked it at the time, it ties in well with the Dare Devil movie and it has interesting character developments and I thought the effects were really cool! But yeah, probably wouldn't watch it again, when there's so much more better stuff constantly being released to catch up on!
I'd always felt Daredevil is kind of a hidden gem and was blasted because of Affleck's reputation at the time for his relationship with JLo so everybody is on the hate train but the Elektra movie is just boring, empty and mediocre with no spectacle. whatsoever.
Yeah,I was on the hate train for Affleck too, but, not because of JLO,I thought he was a lousy actor and the film he did with JLO was god, awful. LOL.Completely agree about your opinion on the Elektra movie.
As a massive fan of Goran Visnjic since the E.R. times, I feel bad this movie is as much forgotten as it is. Show some love to the best thing Croatia has given to the World.
It would've been a lot better if Ben Affleck reprised his role as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the entire movie of Elektra (2005) instead of being in a cameo.
I think the problem is that there isn’t much you can do with Elektra. She’s not a great solo character. Her main enemies are the Hand, who have no strong central figure. And the Hand has all kinds of magic as part of their gimmick. This movie could have been great if they ignored the magic and bait made it Elektra vs ninjas.
Elektra has alot of substance. Yes the hand contributes alot to her lore. But elektra is one of thee best hand to hand combatants in marvel. You can easily flesh her out as a character
While she shouldn't ever be the official MCU Elektra as that goes to the actress in the formerly Netflix run Daredevil series they could have her and Afleck reprise their versions in the multiverse at some point and I have no problem if both of them took other roles in the larger MCU either.
I can’t imagine being forced to do a movie you aren’t interested in and being rushed into filming it and knowing it’ll fail whilst making and promoting it. And it does in fact bomb in the box office. It must be soul crushing
When this movie came out, Garner was fairly popular (if i recall correctly). At the time, I just assumed it was a cash grab trying to capitalize on her popularity / looks.
As for me... I liked it alot!! All the things you say doesn't make sense, made perfect sense to me! It comes from ninja lore , where the Iga, an the Shin obi were to rival's clans . One evil, one trying to do good, to keep the balance. Yin an Yang kind of thing. You would have to read the comics to follow it, Stick's an the Hand. The Daredevil series gave more depth to why they were always fighting. Anyway, loving Syfy an being a Martial artist for more than 40yrs. It was right up my alley 😎, to each his own! Or her! ✌️
I quite like the movie, It has its flaws but I love the characters and their powers if only fleshed out more. I would have like a more grounded spin on her character sans protecting the 'treasure' that way it serves as an origin story leading to DD and eventually to her present.
There was a deleted opening that showed how she came back. And FTR, I’d rather watch this movie over anything Marvel has put out over the last 2 phases.
I will always defend Daredevil as being a solid and criminally underrated superhero movie and I will always defend the Ben Affleck's performance as Matt Murdock. But never will a day come in where I will defend this god-awful spin-off.
To me, this will always be one of my fave films, Jennifer as Elektra is incredible, her opening stealth scene was amazing and the rest of the film should have followed suit. They should have given it a chance for a film 2 with a better script.
This was the wrong story to tell in my opinion, They should have focused the story on Frank Millers Elektra Assassin story line or something similar where she was AT THE BEGINNING OF HER REAL DARKNESS. This was definitely boring when she wasn’t on screen and it felt like it was more about Abby and her dad than her…that costume was so badass and and probably won’t be used again and I would have loved to see her handle an assortment of weapons like giant machine guns, breaking more necks and even more sai battle sequences with villains more interesting than flying sheets.
I loved the movie ! I wish there were fighting scenes and longer, I can see why everyone thinks it felt rush and fast but come on a woman in red costume kicking ass was amazing ! I enjoy more the directors cut but overall it’s a solid entry for me. Better than captain marvel for sure !
I think that... we still have time to release Elektra 2, the return to Jennifer Garner and Kirsten Prout with Artificial Intelligence, to make another great and incredible movie.
Although I like Garner as Elektra, the downside of the film was proving that female led superhero films, along with Supergirl (1984) and Catwoman (2004) were unprofitable for a while until Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel did well in the box office.
I'm surprised with all the "reviews" and "Revisits," no one's ever mentioned the movie is really a live action version of the anime Ninja Scroll. Not saying its a great interpretation, but its got an in shape, fresh off of Alias Jennifer Garner in the red outfit, and that's good enough for me.
I saw Daredevil in the theaters and loved it. I’m in the minority at this point. Daredevil gets to much hate in my opinion. I went and saw Electra in the theaters and I hated it. Sooo I’m curious to see the extended cut now. That’s the only way I’m going to be able to watch it again. Also you were right I completely forgot this movie existed. Damn I’m old.
I always thought that Angelina Jolie should have been Electra…Jennifer Garner always seemed to be a little bland in that role and I feel that the reason why she was cast in that role was because of the TV show Alias and the person who created that show as well as it served as a producer and director basically made her look like the next big thing …sort of like Josh Whedon did with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Eliza Douku …but Sarah was a well seasoned as a child and teen actress…unlike Eliza…who floated for a while and eventually sinked to the bottom…most of the failure of Electra, however had to do with the script..corny and cliched…all that great Source material from the Comics and they used very little of it…Thyroid Mary was just used wrong…in the comics, she was a relentless serial killer who was a nemesis for Daredevil and they made her a third string flunkie!
It was forgotten for a very good reason. That being, that it was absolutely AWFUL. The Netflix Daredevil series did a MUCH better job with the character after Garner butchered her.
This was a less-than-mediocre movie on release, but to compare it to a lot of the movies and shows released in the past few years, with a lot of shame and nausea, I would put it on a pedestal.
Only that it barely even has any flashbacks or even mentioning about from the daredevil movie when this is supposed to be canon to the daredevil movie it’s like Electra is a totally different person like she’s not doesn’t even mention Matt Murdoch her once love entrance not to mention doesn’t mention how she survive from being stab by bull’s-eye not she doesn’t mention anything about Pat Murdoch not even a mention or flashback. It’s like this Jennifer Gardner Electra is a totally different person compared to the Electra from the daredevil movie and also they really had to cut off the Ben Affleck Matt Murdaugh scene when it’s been enough, this movie does not feels like more like an alternate timeline for the daredevil movie
I really don't hate this film, as far as comic book fare for that era I think it did ok. Let's not forget this was the time of barb wire, the phantom, tank girl and Arnold as Mr freeze. And it still better than most of the woke crap now days
I still like it lol wirh all the constraints they had to deal with the result is not catastrophic. I blame the studio. The budget should have been higher and the director needed more time.
When the IMDb message boards were still a thing, I defended this movie to death for years! I was in denial because I WANTED it to be successful only because it's rare that I see an actress whose kicks and punches I can actually believe. I like that she also gains muscles when she trains for these roles, instead of looking rail thin and/or watery like some actually-successful action actresses these days. In fact, it looked like Garner was even more comfortable with the sai compared to Elodie Yung, who is the trained martial artist of the two. It just sucks that Garner seems to be so unlucky with action roles outside of Alias -- but even Alias went to shit after season 2.
Jennifer Garner was forced to make the movie but I think that's why it failed, she just wasn't big enough for people to watch it. I'm thinking if you did a re-boot with a woman as sexy as Megan fox or Salma Hayek in her prime against a male actor of the same status it would do something. Bottom line is sex sells and if the story sucks no one will notice
