My daughter and I still hold this as our favorite. I remember when she got her drivers license, she came to me, held it up and said "Multi-pass"! God I love that memory
@@ByteMeCompletely Just because a movie has Comedy riddled within it does not make it a Spoof of the Genre... Fifth Element is nothing like Spaceballs...
As much as I agree, I would like to visit an alternate reality to see a Fifth Element where Mel Gibson agreed. It would have been awesome too, though I love the version we have.
Shame about Bruce Willis' health, but he will forever be immortalized in his films. Quite saddening to see a legend go like this. It will be a very difficult decade for him and those around him until his time comes. Wish him the best.
I met his parents when I was a young adult back in the late 90s early 2000s. They were members of the Penns Grove Moose Lodge in Penns Grove, N.J. his hometown. They were such lovely and wonderful people. I'm from Pennsville, N.J. which is only about 2-3 miles south of there. I never met Bruce himself yet I knew about a dozen people who were a good 10-15 years older than me that knew him and some of them even went to school with him. The one thing that was consistent from their testimonies is that he was always considered the "Class Clown". Yes, it is a shame for what has happened to his health. His acting talent either it being action, comedy or even a twist of both along with many of his one-liners are definitely a once in a generation or even once in a lifetime treasure.
This is an overview Google Map shot of what was his parents house: www.google.com/maps/@39.7324411,-75.4727553,51a,35y,220.14h,45.07t/data=!3m1!1e3!5m1!1e4?authuser=0&entry=ttu
Yeah, watched Pulp Fiction again the other day and felt a bit sad knowing we won't see performances like this from him again. Although the scene with Thurman and Travolta talking in the car at Jack Rabbit Slims is over of my favorites.
This is probably the only movie, where every single actor deserved an oscar for their play. Every single one fit their role perfectly, even side actors acted with such believable energy like they fully became their characters when on set. Every character's personality was different, and comedically exagerrated, and the actors fully delivered.
I actually think this is Bruce Willis's best role - it's a wild ride and he has to hustle in spite of his character's combat skills. And the universe seems very Moebius to me. The art shines through too.
_Die Hard_ is the movie worth seeing almost every year (at Christmas). He may have done some other good ones like _12 Monkeys_ but I don't want to see them every year or two.
Lol if you know how many times you've watched it, you haven't watched it enough. I owned it on VHS tape and wore it the heck out haha. Watched it multiple times a week all through high-school and had the biggest crush on Milla Jovovich and even today know nearly every word in the entire movie. Probably my all time favorite movie. Honestly it's sad that valerian didn't do nearly as good. Different times I guess I loved it too tho but oh well.
@@SilvaFox Shawshank and fight club may be the only movies I’ve watched more and I have no clue how many hundred times I’ve watched them lol Same, had them on tape and dvd and never left the tv stand.
This movie has a special place in my heart! My first job was at AMC in the summer of 1997 and this was the first free movie I saw. I bought the soundtrack and my sister performed as the diva during a school recital
The Fifth Element was the first movie my wife and I watched together 19 years ago on our second date. Since then when ever we see the movie playing while flipping through channels we just always keep it on to either watch it or just background noise. We have literally watched it well over 50 times and it never gets old.
Similar story to that of my wife and I. Not a week goes by without one of us quoting this movie. We're "voice" people so my wife does the Leeloo voice. Cracks me up even after 20 years. We also bonded over Lilo & Stitch, and I do the Stitch voice really well, so we have referred to our relationship as Leeloo & Stitch. We're cringe af and we love it.
If you grew up in the 90s and were a fan of sci-fi, you remember this movie like it was yesterday. The incredible special effects, over the top and campy acting, music and overall upbeat cyberpunk vision of the future really made this movie stand out. Along with The Matrix, which was released only a few years later, it turned sci-fi into the blockbuster action genre that has dominated the box office since.
This is my absolute favorite movie from the 90s. From the 80s, It's, hands down, Big Trouble in Little China. From the 2000s, I'm going with Constantine.
I can't think of a better movie that encapsulates the 90s. I just watched it again and realized that hat the guy was wearing when he tried to jack Willis has a picture of the hallway on his head so when he looked through the peephole the hallway would look empty. But they don't show that part.
I felt you on an emotional level when you spoke on how this film was more special to you than Star Wars and how Willis was your idol. I’m right there with you, Willis was the man the world building in the fifth element is unmatched in film
I love the film. Let me just get that out of the way. Yes, it's a classic. It has it's issues, but it is ridiculously entertaining. Having said this, the 5th E. Lacks a music score like SW. The sets are on par with the 1st star wars. The interior of the death star is massive, with so much detail. And yet, they are different movies. 9 out of 10 stars.
Its a totally diff generation then the core star wars fans. Im a 80s kid who grew up in the 90s this movie I got to see as it first came out. Star wars was releasing it's remastered editions when I was this age so yah fifth element sits more at home then star wars does. Just sucks it not got a extended universe or followup sequels.
And we all know why Willis didn't play in Titanic, because he would saved it ;) BTW Aerosmith - I Don't Want to Miss a Thing is great song to weak movie, but this was funny "American components, russian components, all made in Taiwan!"
I agree. There's a kind of "futuristic John McClane" with how Willis did the role. It just works. But the whole cast... so well put together. The original Star Wars movie has always been special for me. I'll never forget those first feelings of seeing the magic Lucas conjured up. But The Fifth Element has a more compelling story and rich composition.
This is what a movie should be: take us out of ourselves, out of the mundane, out of this world on a wild ride. Colorful, a beautiful pace of action, beautiful cinematography. Outstanding, original soundtrack, humor, quirky. And a great message: love, the fifth element, without which the other four elements would have no value. 11 out of 10.
I saw this in the theater when it came out. I LOVED it and still do. It really is endlessly rewatchable, as someone else said. The details, costumes, characters, sets, everything. The cast was fantastic, not a bad one in the lot. I think I'm going to have to watch it again very soon!
They lucked out with international audiences. It could easily have been a bomb at a cost of $90M. Hiring Bruce Willis and Chris Tucker, known actors, may have put butts in seats. Boy was _Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets_ a stinker; that could have used some good actors with presence and rapport.
not to sure about the villain, gary oldman seems like a weird choice for such a ridiculous useless character, and is not oldmans fault he can act circles around everyone else in this movie of that much im sure, is just a forgetable villain
My daughter and I watched this many many years ago. Whenever one of us sees that it's on TV we will call the other and say, OUR FAVORITE MOVIE IS ON, and the other knows instantly which movie it is. There are many great movies I've seen in my 57 years but this one has a special place in my heart because when I think of it or see it, I automatically think of my little baby girl, now all grown up with her own little baby girls now.
ha! similar age to you but i think i need to expose my 13yo to the film for the first time. I'm gradually working on getting her into (proper) scifi but it's a hard task!
I went to a 25 years re-screening and it was an amazing experience. We had people screaming when Ruby showed up, an all out applause after the opera scene, and just genuine fun.
In Australia the tv station SBS plays it 5 times back to back on the 5 of May. I really love this movie, it's combination of storyline, cast costumes and music makes it an outstanding example of its genre.
Looks like it did meh at the American box office, but made money worldwide, as well as with post-theatrical sales. I think it safe to say it's a successful Bruce Willis movie.
@lifewithrob512 depends on the country. In my country i dont know a single person that didnt saw this movie. Even my parents seen it, and they watch like 1 movie every 5 years.
Great video honoring a great movie. A fun fact that I'm kind of surprised you didn't mention: the explosion at the hotel was, at the time, the largest explosion ever filmed on a set. It actually got out of control and they had to evacuate the stage while firefighters put out the fire. I absolutely love Chris Tucker's role in here, and I think it's greatly underrated. I think my favorite part are the quips that go so quick and unnoticed like when he's looking for a match and he asks the father if he smokes. I also love at the end when he freaks out when the priest's assistant yells in excitement and Chris asks what's wrong with him, and storms off. Nobody else could've done that role justice.
Prince would have been good in the role. All the sexy stuff is Prince incarnate. But he could never do the high energy over the top like Chris Tucker. Those parts were practically made for Chris Tucker. He is a highlight in a film full of highlights.
Ruby Rodd Character was supposed to be over the top annoying to contrast Korben Dallas, and yes, sometimes it is, but even then Chris Tucker just makes the character to work so well that even as annoying as it is the guy is hillarious and works perfectly to the core story.
I didn't like Chris Tucker's character either, screaming too much and his high pitched voice in combination with being feminine, just extremely annoying and off putting, but thankfully they didn't use him that much. Chris Tucker is an amazing actor though and was much better in Rush Hour.
Right, every character was so unique, this story was told so well and I just couldn't pick a favorite because this movie was just too great! It would be nice if we could get back to great movies like this again.
I basically never rewatch movies but The Fifth Element is up there with Groundhog Day for a screening at least once a year. And it has aged so damn well. I wish Bruce all the best. He will forever be remembered for his iconic roles.
Lol, that is funny. The Fifth Element and Groundhog Day are 2 of my favorites as well with multiple rewatches. I usually also place V For Vendetta in the same league. Something about these films just make them awesome
I love The Fifth Element. I think it's real appeal is that it never takes itself too seriously. It's fun, it's entertaining, the actors hammed it up a bit, the soundtrack is spectacular and the visual effects are good enough (great for their time). The story rollicks along, never bogging down in the back story. Milla Jovovich is amazing, innocence personified and the perfect foil for Bruce Willis's jaded hero - a surprisingly multilayered performance. I won't say it's my favourite scifi film - that would be Bladerunner but it's definitely the one I've watched the most.
I’ve always enjoyed watching Bruce Willis ever since watching the original Die Hard trilogy…but it’s The Fifth Element that made me a Bruce Willis FAN…😅😂😁 His comic timing is impeccable, along with the truly unstoppable performance he consistently gives during the action scenes that just make him super fun to watch. The “everyman” who always seems to find himself in the oddest situations because it’s Tuesday, that’s the sort of vibe I’ve always seen with his major roles…though I do honestly give my hats off to Bruce Willis’ most unexpected performance, namely the unnamed Bounty Hunter in Gorillaz’s “Stylo” music video. Not one word was ever spoken by Mr. Willis…yet the very same mix of lighthearted fun and tough guy machismo shows forth during his action-packed pursuit of everyone’s favorite cartoon band, it makes it all extremely fun to watch! 😅😂🤣😁 Bruce Willis is a true living legend…👍🏻
My favorite movie. One thing you didn't mention: going from one scene to the next, the "overlaps" are incredible smart, rhythmic and often playful. For me it's the indication that Luc has been working on the script for decades. Super green.
@@nickgavis0305 Now that I’ve watched Ace Ventura again as an adult in my 40’s I’m shocked they showed that movie to us as children in catholic school. Had no idea the lady was giving Ace mouth hugs when she dropped to her knees or that he fucked a tranny.
Still one of my most favorites movies of all time. I've watched The Fifth Element about a hundred times by now and I hope to watch it another hundred times before I pass away from this life.
I am not a person who likes to watch movies over and over but I. have watched the 5th element so many times I can't count. Its just so great and so prescient! Its a movie that actually get better with age. Chris tucker's gender bending character is spot on in todays identity obsessed culture, too! Mila and Bruce are just pitch perfect throughout and the comedic tone, special effects, pacing... everything is just perfect. I may watch it again today just because... I actually enjoy it more each time somehow. Almost every week when I am endlessly scrolling trying to figure out what to watch I think... well I could always rewatch the 5th element, lol!
See... now men are not allowed to be feminine or metrosexual without being called a tranny, woman or gay ... Y'all don't understand males ... they like dresses too. In some African tribes men still dress up ...
One of my favorite movies. Milla is such a honey. A beautiful young woman who is willing to be completely goofy on camera...perfect...the chemistry between her and Willis is wonderful. The cameos by one star after another. And of course, the scenes with Ian Holm and Gary Oldman...wonderful.
This film is so good. The script was clearly written when he was young but the performances, music, set design, costume design and everything else about the production, elevated this film to be far better than it has any right to be and i absolutely love it.
@@YorkshirePud-rpg And also you know. Once it's destroyed you would be kind of dead x) Though I like to assume the supreme evil had his way with Zorg. Some kind of kompromat or just the promise of an earlier death. Go figure.
It had two nominations however. 1998 Nominee Oscar Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing As well as two Razzie nominations. Worst Supporting Actress Milla Jovovich Worst New Star Chris Tucker
I am surprised the studio didn’t hire some B level actor to replace Willis and make a bunch of sequels. Lol. Gary Oldman was awesome in this movie too. Even though he really didn’t want to do it. Lol.
Why the movie was so amazing to me back then, was that it was so freaking over the top and so different from any other movies back then. It drew you in and kept you in the story. The pacing was perfect with another crazy thing or event happening right around the corner. May God have mercy on your soul if you had to go pee while this movie was running. You're definitely going to miss something. lol
I love this movie, it's one of those rare events where everyone involved just seemed to have been on their A game and did their best work. It was a perfect storm, everything just clicked and the movie is just a beautiful, fun ride from beginning to end. I also fell completely in love with LeeLoo 🤣
I didn't watch it until about ten or so years after it came out. Years later it's one of my favorite movies. Perfect storm is right. Including the soundtrack. Absolutely perfect for the film. This is truly a fun ride!
Bruce and Mila checking in for their flight to Fhlosten Paradise is one of my favorite scenes in the movie! You can tell they must have had great chemistry with each other. Leeloo's pride in her "multi-pass", much to the annoyance of Corban, comes across as so natural that I wouldn't be surprised if the two had just ad-libbed that whole scene!
Good writing, taken to the next level by perfectly-cast actors. Sadly contrast to the later Valerian, where decent writing, perhaps even nearly as good writing, just falls flat due to casting that simply doesn’t capture the same level of chemistry. But yeah, Willis and Jovovich truly shine as the heart of The Fifth Element. Their performances make a cult classic a bona fide classic.
@@ecoffey71 chemistry doesn’t always equate to “sex” or “love”. What Wally is saying is that when not filming they probably got along with each other really well and enjoyed working together. That relationship lead to them looking great when on camera.
I watched it in the theater totally mesmerized from start to finish. A masterpiece. And I will never be be without a copy of it. All the actors completely dedicated even Gary Oldham who said he hated it. So sorry. Gary we loved it!
I can understand why HE would feel that way, it is a role of increasing humiliation and over-the-top almost slapstick humor, not "great acting." But that's what makes it so funny. (That and the mini-elephant-like pet...)
Watching Leon The Professional, Gary Oldman was very over the top but with more serious writing. I felt that it was great practice/training for his role in The Fifth Element.
Watched this again recently with my partner - still kinda blows my mind that they built this vibrant, whacky world and nothing was ever done with it. I'd love to see more of Earth and its megacities, all the other alien races in the galaxy. So much potential for sequels, prequels and spinoffs. But NO reboots please. This film is exactly what it needs to be
Was never a fan of Bruce Willis - until this movie. He did great. And who could fail to fall in love with Leeloo. And I have to say Gary Oldman had a distinctive buttoned-down delivery that made him a fascinating villain. This is now one of my favourite movies.
My daughter and I would watch this once a month for a couple years during the 2010s. Right after I bought it, we watched every week for a couple months. Even knowing every line, every bit of action, it was totally entertaining! It was also very fun to have another who liked it just as much to watch and enjoy it with. She was young, so I am glad they were only suggestive and never actually dirty. I'm sure the next time she watches it, it won't just be nostalgic but eye opening just how suggestive it is.
I wish movies were made this way. After awhile it feels like the movie takes on a life of its own. Excellent writing, acting, music, and atmosphere. 11/10
That movie has it all, great cast with a real beauty, funny dialogue, great music, dumb action you havent really seen before. And its timeless like the Mummy.
One of my favorite movies of all time, just everything you could want from the movie. It was also one of the first HD movies we watched and good lord, that 35mm film scales so freakin well. Luc Besosn actually took it to 11.
It indeed has everything. The Fifth Element was a movie to introduce me to a combination of scifi-action-comedy, which became the most favorite combination for me to watch. Back to the Future, Demolition Man, Waterworld, Lockout...
That movie was so unique. Even today, I can't find something like it. The iconic dialog, the costumes, the music, the futuristic environment, the actors... Everything was on point. Sometime the movie went too kitschy but it's on purpose and it makes the movie funnier. The only problem of this movie was that it was released the same year than Titanic. But as today, I saw The 5th element at least 15 times but Titanic, only once. I still listen the Diva Dance but I don't listen My heart will go on.
I'm glad I'm not the only one trying to look on the bright side of the dark times in Hollywood. At some point, the art of movie making will have to turn around, right?
In the years since the filming of the movie, the Diva Dance aria has been performed live by the unassisted human voice several times. Not only did it raise the bar for classical coloratura singing technique, it has become a standard part of the virtuoso repertoire for that voice type.
@@EnergyCenterDotTV Well, I highly doubt this has became "a standard part" in any repertoire (after all, it was written to be impossible to sing for a human being...) but if you want a video analysing some attempts you can look for a youtube channel called the charismatic voice.
The Fifth Element is the best movie ever. The acting, the script, the costumes, the music, the sets and just everything is amazing. I have watched it so many times and it never gets old. If you asked me what is the must see movie of a lifetime, I'd pick this movie. Super Green.
Leon: The Professional, and The Fifth Element, are two of the best movies ever put to screen, and also. Two of my favorite movies of all time. Absolute must see films. The Fifth Element tho.... thats my favorite movie ever. Absolutely my #1 movie. Not just my #1 sci fi movie
I've always loved Luc Besson's films, and The Fifth Element has been one of my all-time favorites. 1997 was such a great time to be a teen, I miss going to the movie theater with friends, though it's sure nice to sit 4 feet away from a massive 4k TV with a surround system nowadays.
The color palette and screenscape was so impressive then and really showed off the relative clarity of the new medium of DVD compared to VHS when it came out. The sound was magnificent too. Visuals and audio wouldn't have succeeded alone without a great cast and a good sense of humor throughout, and most importantly a timeless universal space-opera storyline containing intriguing esoteric elements ranging from egyptology to ancient aliens. PS, just to let you know for future videos, Cannes is just pronounced Can, or maybe like "Kahn" if you prefer.
I watched this in the cinema, and bought another ticket to watch it again the next day. Later that week my sister came to visit, and I told her about this amazing movie and we want to see it. So 3 times in one week... and my sister was as thrilled as I was.
I think your analysis was 100% spot on. If there was a SciFi movie that broke the molds of all SciFi, this was it! Everything you mentioned, Costumes, music, settings and placing the entire story into the complexity of its own time line...Then there is nothing else like it. I find it amazing to see the choices for people to play certain roles, but then once a movie with this caliber of excellence, actors and effects etc appears, there is no one who could play the roles better than the ones who made it first. Each and every actor, just seemed play of the other at every turn and in my eyes (and they are old 65 now), that is what makes this so special. Most of the bit players we do not even know and yet, again they just seemed to play the part and it was a seamless response. I could not even name a favorite scene, from the very beginning till the end titles, I cannot stop it nor do I want to. I have four daughters and four grand daughters and everyone of them has been inducted into the "Fifth Element" habit. Do I have other favorite SciFi's, naturally but they are what we call "B: grade movies with Abbott and Costello and their journey to Venus topping out at a nudge under the Fifth Element. Sure, Star Trek TV series are really good, better than the movies I think, maybe the last three movies have been good. Star Wars, I was drawn to like a magnet, but it left, as intended, a person wanting more. I even watched the TV series like "The Clone Wars", and found them more enjoyable...Crazy, huh? There have been many, MIB, all the Will Smith movies and so many that are rare birds to say the least. They all are deserving of a high rate and yet, none do what the Fifth Element can do for me. Now, after that taster once more, I feel the need to enjoy the music and the action of it again right now.
nah there was something like it before it , just not on movie screens in live action. The movie was heavily influenced by Heavy Metal magazine comics (the creator of the Heavy Metal adult cartoon movies). don't think any of those guys were invovled with this movie though , but you can clearly see the influence if you ever read their comics or watched the 2 Heavy metal movies. This movie felt like a heavy metal comic came to life in a live action movie (minus the heavy nudity you see in heavy metal comics). and if you ahven't seen those heavy metal movies i highly reccomend you do , you'll love em if you lvoed fifth element the frist one was made in 1981 titled just "Heavy Metal" it's a series of short storied linked toa central overarching story. the second heavymetal movie was made in 2000 and it's titled Heavy Metal 2000. instead of an anthology feel like the first, it is just one big singular story.
Luv that movie it's 1 of the most brilliant comedys made soooo underrated also Tim Allen shows his leading man chops and shoulda done more drama. When he smiles and nods at the superfan gang at the end always shed a tear
This movie is ART. All of the details, the models, the costumes, the obvious passion and love that went into this movie. The actors made me instantly believe in this Universe and sets. We were given gifts from singular artists expressing what they perceived and felt, Van Gogh with his unique perspectives, Michelangelo's awe inspiring sculptures and too many others to name here. We have been given this movie as a gift from many artists, each giving their passion and perspectives to entertain and treat us to a universe of fantasy. Incredible things to share with others.
The Fifth Element is a classic and it's in my top 10. I went and saw the 20th anniversary showing in the theaters. So good. With Bruce Willis's health declining, it's going to hit differently next time I watch it.
this movie is trash. bland generic sci-fi plot with bad acting (Mila Jovovich is an embarrassment, Bruce is just don't care, he basically was with a poker face all the time) and cringy dialogues. The special FX are good tho.
Definitely gotta say that this is a good pitch for the fifth element. While discussing the professional, thank you for putting in Sir Gary oldman and the best line of that entire .movie. "Everyone!"
This was a phenomenal film. The story, the cast, the costumes, are all perfect combinations of creativity, talent. The costumes are employed perfectly in an innovative means of portraying the evolution of fashion combined with cultural norms. As always, Eric Serra provides a wonderful soundtrack. I watch 5th Element 2-3 times per year. It never gets old. Thanks for the video content. It was a good learn.
One of my all-time favorites! I'm so glad it's finally getting the recognition it deserves! It's very special to me in a deeply personal way; this was also one of my late father's favorites as well, and even though we didn't have much in common on the surface, this movie was one thing we connected on. One of my last memories of him was sitting together and watching this film, just a few years before his passing. I love you, dad. This one's for you. =( =)
I hadn't thought of this but surpisingly I agree. I've always loved this movie from the first time I saw it in theaters. I still watch it almost anytime it's on cable.
Even given its success, I still consider TFE to be an horribly underrated film. It was a great cast, excellent blending of comedy and more serious sections, and great visual FX. I still watch it a few times a year and remain entertained with each viewing.
One of my favourite movies of all time. I know there's parts that are seriousm but Bruce Willis is brilliantly comical in this movie. It was jaw dropping for me as a young man watching this and knowing who most of the cast was without having to go on IMDB and see who playing who. In the same way as I watch Arnie's Total Recall, relax, switch your brain off and enjoy.
I was 11 when this came out and I remember watching at my best friend's birthday sleep over. Just as you say, it's quotes and scenes "have stayed lodged in the front of my brain forever". Thanks for taking me down memory lane. Now I'm off to Plex to enjoy this one all over again.
One of my favourite films ever, of any genre. Still amazing visuals and effects, perfect casting, great action and genuine humour, it has it all. As for that operatic number it literally transports me into outer space. I wish for more genuinely innovative films such as this.
Literally one of my favorite films of all time. I played the VHS so much from ages 11-13 that I had to buy the DVD lol then I bought the 20th anniversary edition when it dropped and I still have that in my collection to this day :)
I can't begin to tell you how much I love this movie. Everything about it is just wonderful. It packs so many amazing, mindboggling, outrageous ideas into one perfect whole it's almost like it should not be possible - but it just works! Thanks for this clip, I learned a lot about its background!
Randomly found this on RUclips. Loved every second of it. The movie itself is a nostalgic favourite but, JoBlo, your clear love of the movie making craft, your ability to explore and explain the story and history of this movie, and the quality of your own video were all just enthralling. Not a boring moment to be seen or heard. Loved it.
I have to echo your comments. This is a movie I have loved for years, but did not realise it had become a classic or that it had exceeded box office expectations. Nor did I realise that such depth had been gone into to create it. JPG as costume designer? It desn't get much better than that, and that is from a guy happy in jeans a t-shirt most days 😉
I remember the hype for this movie was huge. The special effects for the time were amazing too. Plus that soundtrack! I had that cd on repeat as a kid.
👍Thank you for making this video. I watched the 5th Element in 1997 in the cinema (I am already 49, man I am old ...). From all science fiction movies I watched, this one was one of the most memorabel ones. I remember the positive atmosphere in the cinema, every one was impressed, the audience was in awe, cheered, laughed and reacted to every scene on screen. After the movie ended, everyone smiled on the way out. 😄
I am, quite possibly, the world's biggest Trekkie behind only Bjo and John Trimble, but The Fifth Element is one of my favorite movies of all time. A true masterpiece and an instant classic.
It's stunning to me that that this was his real reaction to the music performance. That's really cool to know, thanks for sharing. I was dropped off at the theater one day by my parents and told to go see this. The only movie I've ever seen alone at the theater. I have seen it several times since, of course. It was so fun though! I had no idea about before and somehow had never seen a trailer for it. It remains the best movie I have ever seen in a theater.
I've seen it probably close to 50 times now since being a kid. It's such a good movie. It's got this haze of weirdness to it that I haven't experienced in any other sci-fi film that sells it for me (a feeling I still get watching it today), and what I would expect to feel if I were to travel that far into the future.... I dunno how else to describe it lol... it's just... weird. And I love it.
I totally missed this movie as a kid and just watched it in Cinema (my local theater has a "Best Movies of all time" slot once a month right now). It was a wild nostalgia ride. Loved it! :)
Luc Besson had a pretty big crush on her too, because all throughout the production he was sleeping with her and cheating on his wife, who played the opera singer.
There something about this movie that made watched it more than dozen times. Every time, I loved it. I think Mila was sublime here. Bruce was Bruce. Design was great, special effects for the time were fantastic. I can only recommend it. Has special place in my heart. Its MultiPass :-)
Usually, when you're asked what you liked most about some movie, you name like 1-2 actors and about 2-3 aspects around film making. This is one of the VERY few ones, where I'm REALLY hard pressed to pick ANY favourites. They really all are! Main cast, obviously just brilliant picks, writing and execution. The absolute trifecta. Supporting cast STILL star-studded, equally well written, and executed almost even more well. Visuals, in-camera and VFX alike, striking and fitting, and such an homage to the respective craftsmanships. Just... beautiful! Model building, costumes and makeup, and music are too well done to act as icing on the cake, but they do sooo well in these roles. Some of the supporting actors, I've only ever seen in this movie. But I still know their names and faces after all this time. That alone is a tremendous achievement in itself, imho. I'm almost a little sad, that the Mondoshawan didn't get any spotlight in this otherwise absolutely great retrospective. They got sooo little screen time, but were modled to great detail, and served their purpose incredibly well! So much so, that I would have loved a spin-off detailing their involvement in Earth history from their perspective. (Ideally with a lot of Ian Holm playing various incarnations/ancestors of his character here!) Aziz! LIGHT!
This movie will always remain as one of my top 5 favorite movies no matter how many more I see. One of our TV networks here in Australia shows it regularly, mostly monthly, just watched it tonight in fact.Once a year they have a 5th Element marathon and replay it all day and night,I no complain. Good to learn a bit about the background of it,well done Ric.
I completely feel you. Willis and The Fifth Element hold a special place in my heart. If I even see the movie listed somewhere I will go out of my way to watch it all the way through. I remember seeing the valerian comics , ghost in the shell manga, and alien books in my adolescence, so when this movie came out it just checked all the boxes for me. It took all the best elements from my favorite forms of media and told such an amazing story with out taking itself so serious. So thank you for making this video. That bit of nostalgia really put a smile on my face.
This movie is a pure genius in all aspects - the story, acting, the set, costumes, effects, soundtrack. It’s my absolute favorite movie. I know most of the lines by heart. It’s a shame that it’s not more well-known in the US. Ask around and you’ll be shocked how many people have never seen it.
My daughter and I still hold this as our favorite. I remember when she got her drivers license, she came to me, held it up and said "Multi-pass"! God I love that memory
Oh, that is precious!
In my opinion this film is a masterpiece. I've watched this movie countless times and never got tired of it.
Same! Always fresh with every viewing.
Everytime it's rerun I love watching it. I'd say I've seen it well over a dozen times and still enjoy it now 🫠
"Multipass" I agree!!
amazing movie. it's just fun the whole way through
Funny you say I’ve seen a bunch of times and never thought twice about even though it don’t hear about it in pop culture
The Fifth Element is a true gem in sci-fi cinema history. And Bruce Willis is one of the GOATs!
But it's not a straight sci-fi, it's a spoof of the genre.
@@ByteMeCompletely Just because a movie has Comedy riddled within it does not make it a Spoof of the Genre... Fifth Element is nothing like Spaceballs...
Yes, Bruce Willis will go down as a Great in the industry... True shame what he is having to go through...
As much as I agree, I would like to visit an alternate reality to see a Fifth Element where Mel Gibson agreed. It would have been awesome too, though I love the version we have.
@@ByteMeCompletely a spoof? of what? where is the spoof? there is science and there is fiction.
Saw this as a younger teen when it first came out in 97, fell in love with it then and to this day still one of my favorite movies of all time.
Dad took me to see this at the theater when I was just a little girl and I remember thinking "this is my all time favorite movie" and it still is
I saw it in my early 40s (in theatre) and I thought it was too fake.
In fairness, I saw Star Wars in 1977 and thought the same thing.
I saw it with my dad too! I love this movie so much, I just watched it with my son this past summer
Also loved the professional, my brother and I watched it so many times
Did you guys ever see Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets...? oh man, it was very beautiful and so creative
Same I was 9 and I still love it.
AMEN!!! 🙏🏿
He is and remains the pinnacle of how a New Yorker USED to be. (Sure, I'm biased, raised there too....)
This is probably the only movie, where every single actor deserved an oscar for their play. Every single one fit their role perfectly, even side actors acted with such believable energy like they fully became their characters when on set. Every character's personality was different, and comedically exagerrated, and the actors fully delivered.
Gimmie theeee caaaash
I think they give Oscars for casting, as well, and it deserved one!
They could have done better with the president.
@WwZa7 You spittin' facts, mate.
@@noise5555Absolutely nope.
Ruby Rod was a character ahead of its time, thinking of modern day influencers.
Lol good observation
I actually think this is Bruce Willis's best role - it's a wild ride and he has to hustle in spite of his character's combat skills. And the universe seems very Moebius to me. The art shines through too.
2nd best. Tears of the sun is his best. 😁
Nice play on words! This movie had *so* much of Jean Girard "Moebius" influence in it.
_Die Hard_ is the movie worth seeing almost every year (at Christmas). He may have done some other good ones like _12 Monkeys_ but I don't want to see them every year or two.
Me too. Tho I did love Hudson hawk too… apparently I like a “flop”

Nah .. The Last Boy Scout was for sure Bruce's best movie.

Same, had them on tape and dvd and never left the tv stand.
This movie has a special place in my heart! My first job was at AMC in the summer of 1997 and this was the first free movie I saw. I bought the soundtrack and my sister performed as the diva during a school recital
I think the years 97-00 were the best ones of our lives, by far. Films as good as this one were a big part of that legacy.
The fifth element and the mummy (1999) are movies i can see over and over and never get bored.
thank you thank you! I almost never see anyone mention the Mummy. One of my fav movies of all time. Fifth element is also up there
The Fifth Element was the first movie my wife and I watched together 19 years ago on our second date.
Along with The Matrix, which was released only a few years later, it turned sci-fi into the blockbuster action genre that has dominated the box office since.
key point, over the top campy...
@@Staylecrate funny I saw it months ago and noticed that for the first time as well! Of course I missed it as a kid in the 90s 😂

@@josephdarkhelmet9494 well said!
And we all know why Willis didn't play in Titanic, because he would saved it ;)
BTW Aerosmith - I Don't Want to Miss a Thing is great song to weak movie, but this was funny "American components, russian components, all made in Taiwan!"
Best casting ever. Costumes, Visuals, Music, Story..............near perfect

Woow!! Very adorable. I also love this movie. cant get enough of it.
ha! similar age to you but i think i need to expose my 13yo to the film for the first time. I'm gradually working on getting her into (proper) scifi but it's a hard task!
I remember the entire family sitting around watching this movie when it premiered on HBO
I went to a 25 years re-screening and it was an amazing experience. We had people screaming when Ruby showed up, an all out applause after the opera scene, and just genuine fun.
Damn I had tickets to one last summer but I had to work 😭
The opera was a true work of art. The music, the dance and Lola fighting to keep the stones safe. The C.G.I. was great for its day as well.
I love Ruby because I'm just a freakishly huge Chris Tucker fan, but in 2023 I have a feeling they were screaming for less interesting reasons.
Sounds very Rocky Horror Picture Show esque...
Yes... but "What Happened to it"....
In Australia the tv station SBS plays it 5 times back to back on the 5 of May. I really love this movie, it's combination of storyline, cast costumes and music makes it an outstanding example of its genre.
It’s not much of a “cult classic” considering how incredibly successful it was from its initial release to even now. It’s just a genuine classic 🎉
If I remember correctly it totally flopped at the cineema. At least in Germany.
It did well in Australia
definitely
Naw he was hilarious
You don't live in Woodstock IL then... Ugh... Groundhog day...
You Sir clearly has flawless taste :)
Luc Besson is a film genius. Love most of his work. This was an excellent example of his great work.
It’s the heavy metal from 1981 but live action ✨✨🤘🏽
I love The Fifth Element. I think it's real appeal is that it never takes itself too seriously. It's fun, it's entertaining, the actors hammed it up a bit, the soundtrack is spectacular and the visual effects are good enough (great for their time). The story rollicks along, never bogging down in the back story. Milla Jovovich is amazing, innocence personified and the perfect foil for Bruce Willis's jaded hero - a surprisingly multilayered performance. I won't say it's my favourite scifi film - that would be Bladerunner but it's definitely the one I've watched the most.
I’ve always enjoyed watching Bruce Willis ever since watching the original Die Hard trilogy…but it’s The Fifth Element that made me a Bruce Willis FAN…😅😂😁
His comic timing is impeccable, along with the truly unstoppable performance he consistently gives during the action scenes that just make him super fun to watch. 😅😂🤣😁
Bruce Willis is a true living legend…👍🏻
My favorite movie. One thing you didn't mention: going from one scene to the next, the "overlaps" are incredible smart, rhythmic and often playful. For me it's the indication that Luc has been working on the script for decades. Super green.
It is such a beautiful movie, and the special effects, acting, music and storyline is quite unique!
I broke my VHS copy of this movie from watching it too much. This film, 2001 and Starship Troopers is what began a lifelong love of sci-fi

In the years since the filming of the movie, the Diva Dance aria has been performed live by the unassisted human voice several times. Not only did it raise the bar for classical coloratura singing technique, it has become a standard part of the virtuoso repertoire for that voice type.

I've always loved Luc Besson's films, and The Fifth Element has been one of my all-time favorites. 1997 was such a great time to be a teen, I miss going to the movie theater with friends, though it's sure nice to sit 4 feet away from a massive 4k TV with a surround system nowadays.
My dad took me to see it in the cinema when I was 8. What an experience that was. Saw it around 20 times since then❤
The color palette and screenscape was so impressive then and really showed off the relative clarity of the new medium of DVD compared to VHS when it came out.
"Azeez, LIGHT!!!!" Any true Fifth Element fan will remember that quote.😅😅😅
The Fifth Element is timeless. So few movies you see when you're a child hold up, but if anything, I appreciate the movie more now than I did then.
WIll smith is trash
nah there was something like it before it , just not on movie screens in live action.
I never get tired of this movie. It's terrific. I'd add to this list Galaxy Quest.
Hell yeah! Love Galaxy Quest!
Luv that movie it's 1 of the most brilliant comedys made soooo underrated also Tim Allen shows his leading man chops and shoulda done more drama. When he smiles and nods at the superfan gang at the end always shed a tear
Never give up, never surrender. Full speed ahead!
By Grabthars hammer, what a savings 🤣
Those poor people! 😔
Such an amazing movie! I remember ditching school I had to see it. We need more movies like this.
I've seen fifth element at least 50 times. Every time its on TV I watch it. Huge Bruce Willis fan, huge sci fi fan, this was perfect.
Same it's in my top 10. It has everything.
this movie is trash. bland generic sci-fi plot with bad acting (Mila Jovovich is an embarrassment, Bruce is just don't care, he basically was with a poker face all the time) and cringy dialogues. The special FX are good tho.
@@kerri_shark I mean that's your opinion. It's wrong, but that's your opinion.

Calm down, fangirl. Stop being hysterical and start parrying.
@@kerri_shark You calm your tits down. You're the one with a paragraph of bitching.
Definitely gotta say that this is a good pitch for the fifth element.
While discussing the professional, thank you for putting in Sir Gary oldman and the best line of that entire .movie. "Everyone!"
Such an awesome 90's classic! Great cast chemistry with a perfect blend of comedy, action and scifi elements.
Finally?
@@danielmorgan5276 Well, at least from this channel. =)
I hadn't thought of this but surpisingly I agree. I've always loved this movie from the first time I saw it in theaters. I still watch it almost anytime it's on cable.
Yes, this really is a timeless classic (these days) that will never get old or boring. A masterpiece.
Even given its success, I still consider TFE to be an horribly underrated film. It was a great cast, excellent blending of comedy and more serious sections, and great visual FX. I still watch it a few times a year and remain entertained with each viewing.
the answer the video creators question:
Stargate is "bigger".
I love this film. Bruce Willis left an amazing footprint on this world. He is one of my favorites.
One of my favorite movies EVER. Great cast, Amazing visuals, and Bruce Willis doing what he did best. Thank you.
Literally one of my favorite films of all time. I played the VHS so much from ages 11-13 that I had to buy the DVD lol then I bought the 20th anniversary edition when it dropped and I still have that in my collection to this day :)
This movie is very underrated, its a timeless perfect movie in my eyes
Absolutely right. One of my all-time favorites but this analysis of it gives it a new level of meaning. Terrific job!
I just read the Wikipedia on this movie to see if it could add anything, and it looks like JoBlo just did his research by reading the article.
This is one of the best movies I've ever seen! Being a childhood movie of mine, I have a soft spot for it.
Haziz, LIGHTS!!!!
I'm also 49, and that's not old, man!😅 Just...experienced! 🤓
I agree, it is such a feelgood sci fi film, and still one of my favorite movies.
Thank you, you saved my day!@@drumstick74
I love this film. It is one of those rare moments when all the planets align just right. I watch this at least once a year.
im 30 and this movie holds a very special place in my heart. thanks for putting into words the way ive always felt about it
I am, quite possibly, the world's biggest Trekkie behind only Bjo and John Trimble, but The Fifth Element is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Valerian I thought was a good movie that had some fifth element nostalgic parallels.
@@tedo3332Agree! I love Luc Besson's sci-fi aesthetics.
I totally missed this movie as a kid and just watched it in Cinema (my local theater has a "Best Movies of all time" slot once a month right now). It was a wild nostalgia ride. Loved it! :)
I loved Fifth Element. Such a unique and quirky sci-fi film.
Also had a huge crush on Milla Jovavich after watching this as a kid.
It's Jovović

(Ideally with a lot of Ian Holm playing various incarnations/ancestors of his character here!)
Aziz! LIGHT!
Even the Chinese cook and the "smoke you" guy were perfect. Best movie ever made.
One of those amazing movies that, when it appears on live TV, you stop what you're doing and watch it until the end. I'll never get bored of it.
I’ve watched it at least three times that I can recall…never lived outside of the USA though…😅
I love every film Luc Besson has ever made, including "The Fifth Element." And he brought opera back to the masses!
