I think this should be renamed “The worst selling characters in Smash” because many of these characters aren’t obscure. The game and watch series may have sold tens of millions but is Mr. GNW really less obscure than Richter Belmont?
Actually, Mr Game&Watch isn't technically a single character on its own game, and the Game&Watch system sold pretty well, like almost 50 million

@SHON the point is that the character is still obscure, removing sales numbers. Everyone knows the dog from Duck Hunt, but he's easily top three most obscure characters on the roster. Add ROB, G&W, and Wii Fit Trainer, and Lucas, Min Min, and Roy are far less obscure as actual characters.
@@saintnick7252 Maybe obscure for the 90-2000 generation, but the 70-80 generation know these pretty well, before their introduction to Smash.

I did and I didn't enjoy it much. Mechanics just didn't sit well with me.
In Ike’s defense, during the gamecube and Wii era, I didn’t know much about fire emblem and what the series was about. My first fire emblem game was Awakening and my interest came from seeing the gameplay on the eshop. I would have totally played PoR and RD if I had known what the Fire Emblem series was about because I love RPGs! 😍
Yeah that and their localizations were really botched, they didn't get any marketing and not to mention that more than half of RD's script was removed in the English release

@SHON Yeah, but they could have pushed the release date, it's likely a grand mayority of Fire Emblem fans who were planning on picking it up probably bought Mario Galaxy instead, because you know, it's Mario

PoR was released 6 months before the Wii came out and it wasn't marketed very well either. It's a definite sleeper hit, but that's Nintendo and Intelligent Systems fault. RD, however, had a different set of problems. Even never told people Ike was playable in that game until after it was released and Intelligent Systems not expanding on their products nearly got Three Houses to low sell if it wasn't for the final trailer.
To be fair, fire emblem has it hard because each game has a different protagonist vs. most other series having one protagonist throughout (i.e. mario, Kirby, inkling, etc.)
Well technically the Splatoon games do have different protagonists but there all customizable avatars and have very similar story's (aside from agent 8)but I get your point.

They saw that Fire Emblem 7 was a thing, and was easier and more beginner-friendly. So they just localized that instead, and Roy appears as a little boy.

@@balticblues8130 Maybe the reason for Mother 3 not getting Localized maybe Nintendo wouldn't do a good job of it. If Mother 3's localization was as bad as Fire Emblem Fates or Metroid Other M. I would rather have Mother 3 stay in Japan then get ruined.
I remember when Pyra and Mythra were released as DLC, Mew2King tried Xc2 for the first time and fell in love with it. He got to experience it all thanks to Smash
Yeah that was great. It's always nice to see people try a new game series thanks to Smash. Which always makes it silly to see people hate it when more recent characters are added to Smash to help promote a game. Especially when you have stories like this. Seriously Xenoblade 2 got a huge boom in sales after Pyra and Mythra got added. Of course people want to play their game to know who they are.
I mean I do get it. It's because people have been asking for much older characters for so long that it feels like a slap in the face to them when a new character from a fairly recent game gets in before their picks. But at the same time it's kind of unfair that newer characters can't be given a fair shot.
I like when characters from less popular games get added for this exact reason. Yeah having a popular character get in is cool but smash is a great way to introduce people to games they probably wouldn’t think of trying
If only they would do that with more series no yet represented in Smash.

@@KingTruffles Nintendo characters like Ice climbers and R.O.B don't need to be popular to get into Smash. Even if Richter is not well known, he kinda helped start the Metroidvania genre, which is pretty popular for indie fans.
This video was just an elaborate ploy to get people to play Xenoblade 2.

It’s ironic that the 3 Fire Emblem “Legends” made this list.
I mean makes sence cause aside from Awakening to Three Houses (which sold over 3 million copy currently). Shadow Dragon and Binding Blade didnt get localized until Roy's father game did (and also PoR and RD). And even thought Marth, Roy and Ike were fan favorite among fe and smash bros fans, their games only successful in japan and not local.
It does make sense, I just find it funny since Marth, Roy, and Ike are considered legends within the Fire Emblem series.
Hot Take: I actually think The Binding Blade not being localized is WORSE than Mother 3 not being localized.
Roy is 1 of the top dogs of Fire Emblem, even getting a special cutscene in FEH when you was able to summon him.
Heck; I'd even say he's worthy of getting a full-blown remake because of how popular he is.
Not that I'm saying Mother 3 shouldn't be localized, it absolutely should be, but to me Roy's game is even more tragic.
Marth, Roy and Ike are the only good characters to come from the series
True, if I had to decide which FE characters were in Smash, I would choose, Marth, Roy, and Ike since they’re legends but also Robin and Byleth since they provide some variety as well.
Byleth has gotten me into playing Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It's definitely one of the greatest games I've ever played.

Total sales number is a terrible way to rank this as it would recount multiple people and depend on how many games, unless you took both of those things into account, which I doubt.

I think your method would've been more reliable if you only exclusively counted the singular most successful game as a character's baseline, since multiple games in the same franchise are likely to be purchased by the same people again and again.

Man…FE6 is a pain for new players in particular. The low hit rates, bosses with insane throne bonuses, and the fact that around 80% of your army (including Roy) sucks buffalo cock all make it really hard to stay engaged, especially compared to most other games in the series. And I think that’s why this wasn’t the first FE game released worldwide. They felt it would be too alienating to newer players, and I honestly think they were right. FE7 is a much better gateway into the series and was a great choice for a first international release.
the Reason for fate's sloppy story, is because the writers where trying to achieve too much with not enough time. Intelligents Systems had an idea for Fate to have three stories to appeal to everyone, but they realized that they didn't have enough writers. So they hired an outside writer, Shin Kibayashi was that writer. Nintendo wanted Shin to write the outline for each pathway, what happened instead is that Shin wrote 500 pages for each pathway. Nintendo knew this was too long so they cut the story into pieces without the writers permission and the fact the Nintendo demanded Fates come on the Fire Emblem Anniversary only made things worse. Which resulted in this hilariously mess of a story. The good news this that there is a manga based on Fates that is a little better. Its called Fire Emblem If: the Crown of Niberlung.
I was honestly expecting to see Shulk on the list given that a large majority of western players didn't know who he was when he got added. But might be because eventual re-releases of his game boosted sales numbers to not warrant being on the list. Hence Pyra and Mythra are here and not him.

Rob was a pack in with the NES back when it was initially released, so his sales were actually extremely good.

@@virgiliomartinezerickson8044 yeah, after the video game crash people didn't trust video games, so Nintendo needed to advertise the NES as a toy to get any sales, that's why they made ROB and included him with the NES.
ROB is responsible for enabling the success of the NES, and by extension the entire video game industry.
@@Cri_Jackal I wish they gave R.O.B another go, not as in release him as a toy again, but maybe make a puzzle game starring him or something, he's already known by lots of people from Smash so it might be fun

Difference is most of these came from a IP already in Smash, like Lucas or were included to advertise the game, Isaac can't fall into any of these
Smash likes to rinse and repeat with Fire Emblem rather than branching out.
Yeah, some people really tend to defend anyone that's in smash no matter what, but will give any excuse as to why someone not in the game shouldn't.

I remember when I first discovered xenoblade through its music. My friend who got me into smash was even surpirsed I even had an idea of what it was. It’s neat many people know what xenoblade is and how several of my friends are interested after I praised the game so much.

I mean, outside of Castlevania, none of these series are exactly iconic.
Duck Hunt was a launch title that was bundled with the NES itself, its sales total 28 million because of that.

Both are one of the most iconic series and are very recognizable (outside of smash) but both takes like 5 spots on the lists which leads to my point that is these are underappreciated (but not underrated)
When you take the whole of the gaming ecosphere into account and not just Nintendo, of the series featured in this video, Castlevania is really the only one that categorizes as "iconic".
Earthbound especially would be basically forgotten by this point if it wasn't for Smash. It's not like Nintendo makes an effort to keep the series in people's minds.
That is really the beauty of SSB, even characters that don't have much in the way of sales are able to get in. Even though I think she's not going to be the last DLC fighter, I'm not giving up hope on Shantae to be a fighter in SSBU until the bitter end. I believe that is how people would feel about characters from franchises that don't do that much in the way of sales. Sure SSB is a cash grab, but it is more than that. It's meant to celebrate the games that characters come from and give gamers the incentive to branch out. I mean, if it wasn't for Bayonetta's inclusion in SSB 4, I may have never tried Bayonetta 2 and discovered just how much I love hack and slash games. That's really why I hate the SSB community. Most of the people are either trying to undermine someone else's character's chances, or just acting like toxic idiot brats when their character does not get in. It's the kind of community that a franchise as beautiful as SSB does not deserve.

@@MrWIZ9000 Did you not read what I just fucking said? Firstly, a mii costume does not mean a character cannot be a fighter, they just have less of a chance. Secondly, she's not my waifu because I don't want to date her. The only waifus I have are Cynthia and Leone from Akame ga Kill. Thirdly, if I gave up hope that easily, I would've died years ago from suicide. In other words, I reiterate that I won't give up hope for her to be the last one until the bitter end. However, she doesn't have near as big a chance as she did before the mii costume, though she still has a chance. She is as far as I know the only mii fighter outfit to get a theme song attached to it after all, something Sans didn't even get. Other people have already tried to convince me to give up and provided a lot more than one stupid reason, but I still haven't given up hope. So go bother someone else with your toxicity because I don't want it.

To be fair, I'd imagine Julius Belmont being a better choice than Richter. Even tho Aria and Dawn of Sorrow sold less than Richter games, it was the most recent Belmont we had. But to be honest, I think Sakurai was obsessed with Symphony of the Night

Trevor is the second celebrate and important Castlevania character. If Richter doesn't appear in smash he probably could.
I feel like making Alucard as a playable characters is actually better, he's very popular amongst fans and others. It wouldn't be a daunting task as his model has already been in Smash. I wouldn't blame Sakurai tho because SOTN is a classic and it fucking rocks.

I’ve thought of so many IPS for a Smash 6 and most of them would originate from rare obscure games that I feel deserve more attention. And I’m one of those people who say that whoever makes it into Smash deserves their spot. Do I believe certain DLC characters should’ve just been saved for the sequel and not DLC, yes… but nobody in the roster doesn’t feel earned.

After all the games I’ve played due to smash reveals (Greninja- Pk X&Y. Palutena- Uprising. Isabelle- Animal Crossing) Bayonetta has to be my favorite.

Gaming watch has more sales sold than Splatoon surprisingly sitting at 40 million I'm not sure about Rob though he might have avoided a spot on the list because the other characters were just that low

Tbh, I don't think sales is an accurate depiction of how "popular" a character is. Ike is actually the most liked/popular character among 595 other playable characters (Roy also.) Not to mention, Japanese only characters like Roy/Marth/Lucas shouldn't have sales figures even considered, because most English fans emulate their games.
"Obscure" is not the opposite of "popular." It's still a strange method to use, but it's not because it disregards popularity..

Roy and Lucas also both we're in a single Smash game before being dropped only to have massive fan backlash bring them back as DLC in Smash 4.
binding blade might be too hard for as a first title to introduce fire emblem to the west so it kinda makes sense they released blazing sword first since its much more balanced
Its funny, I don’t think of Ike as an obscure character because I was big into fire Emblem already when his games came out (actually literally got into fire Emblem because of Marth being my best character in melee and buying the first fire Emblem game I saw) so I got them both day 1 and are literally my second favorite games of all time. I’ve been maining Ike in smash since brawl because of that so when he was number 3 I was kinda shook lol. But understandable because apparently Radiant dawn was a gamestop pre order exclusive.

I LOVED Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, playing it on the PS4 collection. However, my time playing Richter was less than an hour, as I quickly found the better character. What can I say? Maria is the best vampire hunter.
I'd say Grant is, or at least can give Maria a run for her money. Both are shorter characters that have control over their jump momentum and can skip tricky platform parts with their gimmicks

I already did a comment but i just wanted to say that Smash Bros is the reason why i started playing games from the fallowing series. Zelda, Kid Icarus, Mega Man, Bayonetta and Undertale.
Ironically, Roy and Ike were the winners of the very first Fire Emblem Heroes poll in 2017, beating out Marth, Robin, Chrom, and Corrin, and all other FE men.

Sm4sh 3DS did made me buy Kid Icarus Uprising and the sales make this game dirty for how this game is so great, full of humor, great moment and pretty good gameplay. That surpsise me how it's an "obscure" bad selling game. Mother 3 is also a gem.

Exactly. Take the FE characters mentioned. Roy and Marth largely suffer from being japan exclusive, Roy especially with only one game under his belt, but even Ike due to his two games just being when the series was less popular. But among people who know Fire Emblem well, Marth especially is an absolute legend. Not to mention his ranking didn't include mobile games. While Fire Emblem Heroes makes a ton of money, surely some research could have had what was spent on banners featuring alts of the characters. Another example, Pyra and Mythra. Long before their inclusion in Smash Ultimate, I still knew who they were despite not buying or ever even playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

When i read the title saying obscure characters i did moreso Think of characters who seem to be odd inclusions at the time of its debut game like jigglypuff who is really an odd choice for a second pokemon in smash 64, mewtu, charizard or even meowth would have made much more sense, the only thing justifying its inclusion would be her similar chape to kirby.
I don't think that summing up the total sales gives a good information about the obscurity of a character, since one is obscure enough, the people buying their their games are probably the same, which means you're counting the same people and multiplying them for the number of the games in which the character appear. I think that an average or just the count of the highest selling game is more indicative.
Binding Blade is pretty hard and would not be great as a beginner game. The prequel Blazing Blade (the first one that got localized) is much easier.
