    This story was shared with me by an old friend:
    Before I left to serve my country in Vietnam, when I was a teenager, I would go to Diane’s house to listen to records. Diane’s parents were very friendly and with 4 teen and preteen children of their own they were glad to host the neighborhood kids as long as it didn’t get out of hand. Other than noise and foot stompin’ to the groovy tunes of the Beatles, The Monkees, The Doors, The Turtles, The Buckinghams and yes, The Rascals, we were well behaved. I was a skinny kid, weighed about 115 pounds and stood about 5 foot 5. I hadn’t begun my growth spurt when I first started going to Diane’s. And neither Diane, whom I adored, or her girlfriends paid much attention to this little goofball. And then as years went on and as I grew, one by one the guys in the group were shipped off to Vietnam and things at Diane’s got quieter and quieter. As I grew Diane started to pay more attention to me and by the time it was my turn to go, well, I could honestly say Diane was my gal. But, with my impending departure off to war I couldn’t be sure if Diane would still be there when I got back from ‘Nam. The Rascals song “How Can I Be Sure” played over and over in my mind. I wouldn’t be surprised if Diane found someone else during my absence and I told her if she did find another guy that I would understand. On our last night together we were alone on her couch, Diane’s parents respecting our need for privacy stepped out for dinner. We held hands and listened to music and as this song played in the background we kissed pleasantly but somewhat awkwardly for the first time. How could I know at the time that it would be the first of thousands of kisses we would eventually share? But still I wondered as I shipped out, how can I be sure? As often as Diane tried to assure me it constantly nagged at me for the 11 months I served in combat.
    Well, it needn’t have bothered me. When I got home Diane was at the bus station to greet me. It was the happiest day of my life. It turns out that I could have been sure the whole time. Just before this past Thanksgiving I said goodbye to Diane for the last time after nearly 50 years together. Yes, it was and still is sad for me. But I know one glorious day when I am called home, I will say hello to Diane once again.
    How can I be sure? I just know, Diane told me I would.

    I am 53 years old, born in 1967. My favorite music era by a LONG shot belongs to the 1960s. I always joke that I was born in the wrong decade. These songs were played all of the time while I was growing up. As I got older I dug more deeply into the era. I discovered more music. It seemed as if it would never end, but eventually, it pretty much did, because the 60s ended. I laugh when I see people say "This music brings back memories of good times" and they're 20 years older than I am. It's because for me, it brings back memories of the good times as well. I never really cared for the music from my era. Oh; and yes, I agree, this is one of the greatest songs ever.

    With all of the anti war protests and songs (Viet Nam), this is a love song, that is pure. One of the best I've ever heard, as the song speaks of love and devotion. A needed song for those days, and possible these days, also.

    • @oppothumbs1
      @oppothumbs1 3 года назад +2

      I guess what Biden is doing to us is even more beautiful. There were a lot of non-protest songs then , really the protest songs were a small minority on the radio. You can never be sure. One day you're the young rascals then the rascals. Touch me but don't take me down ? I can't understand such depth.

      @@suek6477 ..... Yes, I do NOT believe that it is an underrated song, either. I was in high school when this song came out (1966). Now.... what I DID come to realize was... that it took a great voice to sing it... and... that it took an AMAZING VOCAL RANGE, also! Those two qualities sure were possessed by Eddie Brigati! I had meant that... as I became older... I surely did realize this. And, yes... Just as the original commenter had said....this song is, " second to none "!!!

    One of the best love songs of the late '60s/"hippie" era in rock & rock-related music (since these guys were also blue-eyed Soul progenitors). Anyway, that's saying a LOT. Still brings me to tears, many years after hearing it around the age of 11, for the first time...
