Another thing that's very important and a lot of welders never learn this unless told by an older welder or unless it finally Dawns on them after years of welding you can turn in a picture perfect specimen and still bust out on the bend test because you didn't allow cooling space between each pass if you tackle everything too quick and too fast with every pass when filling and capping and you don't allow it to cool off between passes your weld will become hard and brittle and is likely to crack when given the bend test

I now know that welding is way more complicated than I thought. Our welder is very humble even he's done a great job, good attitude for learning things. Also the inspector is absolutely professional!
You could tell he was a good welder, as soon as he started reading like a 6 year old. Edit: it’s mind boggling how different things are in the U.K. no where here, would the guy testing you out give you any indication of what to do, just hand you a wps, two bits of pipe and say call me when you’ve rooted it. Also, no way would you be expected to bring anything but your own boots, mask and overalls, and that wouldn’t reflect badly on you. It’s on the company to supple everything else.
I was going to comment the same thing. Never have I walked into a test lab and been walked through the wps like that. If you need to be walked through it you shouldn't be testing. BTW I'm in California and I have passed this test. They didn't bend test mine. It was xrayed.

About all but two places that I've worked in the building trades provided all of your equipment. It was winter time, I tested for a Boilermaker outfit and the guys told me days before going in they wouldn't let you use a grinder between passes. It was a 1/8" 7018 6G chill ring, heavy wall X-Ray test. I brought two rat tail files with me in my jacket. Before we got out of there those rat tail files about got wore out cuz there were six other guys testing at the same time. The files made that test for me. I blew through the chill ring at about 4:00 o'clock on my hot pass. Without them files I never would have made that test. You don't blow through a chill ring! It left a big glob inside but it did clean up with the files. And I scratched around the whole inside of the Ring just to make the file marks uniform. The inspector looked very close but never said a word.

Very informative video for welders starting out and all tests are make or break from both the welders and inspectors view. 🤘🏼 Also (union or not) never rely on testing facilities for grinders, tig rig/stick stinger, down to a dual gauge or Y, and argon hose. Have whatever you need to pass on hand. Inspectors these days aren’t like the horror stories we came up hearing from the old timers. More than often they come from the field and been there themselves and want us to pass.
Been welding for a decade(strictly running dairy tube stainless)just had to sit my asme test yesterday and my boss literally gave me 2 practices before I had to sit a 6g 8mm carbon pipe. I've never prepped or welded pressure pipe before so needless to say I barely made it through the test and basically relied totally on my dairy tube welding experience to carry me through 😬 anxiously awaiting my results, wish me luck!

So many young men want to be welders but some are already married and cannot afford to take a year out of their life and go back to vocational training school. Ingalls in pascagoula, ms. Has 3 year pipe welding apprentice programs where they pay $17.50 per hr. Just to train you, drawback is passing a drug test and no criminal background which most welders have issues with both. That's why I like the welders offshore guide because it overcomes all those issues with the knowledge it provides on learning and getting certified, without having to go through long awaited union programs, some welders follow its advice and get certified in a few weeks. How did the welder get a good look at his root without a decent light and a mirror? And bridge tacks? If you’re gonna take a test at a boilermaker hall you’ll have no grinder to grind out bridge tacks. I always carried a brand new pipliner file and big saws all blade……
As a pipe fitter ( non union) I grind the seams on the inside of the pipe back 1/2 in to 3/4 inches. So the welder gets a good penetration on his weld.
There's a chance those pipe could have high pressure steam in them if you as the welder can't weld them clean you should not being doing it if a high pressure steam line explodes because of bad weld people will like die
Awesome video! I was wondering though, how does he control the amperage of the torch? I've seen foot pedals, but for part of the video he is on his knees. Is it constant amperage?
Looks like he's running a wheel for his argon. It's probably just one to give him his argon flow and running lift/scratch start since it looks like he's just snapping out of it which is kind of a bad habit. snap out but get that argon back on your weld until it's cool even if it's just carbon.
Yeah bro looks like he's just using scratch to start, which is how we train in my school in Southeast Tx, we don't use controls/pedals/ until we start working with alloys.
I assume this is to stimulate "real world" conditions where it could be a repair/install in an existing facility, so you have to adapt to the part, no way to just move it more conveniently.

That certificate is only good for what ever company he is testing for and is good for as long is he working for that company but if he gets layoff and stays off more than 6 months he would have to re test again for that same company but if he is off less than 6months he wouldn't have to test again he's certs would still be good.and that's how it works have a good day 👍
Its to ensure full 100% weld penetration. If the joint were tight fitted, it would be incredibly difficult to get full weld penetration to go the full thickness to the inside of the pipe. Pipe and plates that are butt welded are usually fitted with a 1/8" gap and the faces of the joints beveled to ensure full penetration of the weld arc. The thicker the piece of material to be welded, the more important the fit up technique is. This is why fitting is so important to the success of the welder. If he did not fit the two pipes together properly with a gap and a bevel, he would have failed the bend tests.
You know, I've been x-raying for 11 years. Before that I was a welders helper on pipelines, I got discouraged when I was struggling to weld, and my welder said you either have it or you don't. My dad x-rayed so I just decided to go that route. I wanted to get my cwi, but over the years I've not learned much more about welding, I doubt I would be able to do this guy's job as proficient as someone who was a welder. To be honest, cwi is already over saturated, I know quite a few of them that are doing other jobs. This whole industry of inspection isn't what it used to be. It's hard to find any consistent work around home, you have to travel to make a living and I'm pretty much done with it all. I hate that I wasted this much time in both fields to only walk away but... it is what it is.
I started back in Sept of 63. First two position bend test was in Nov. The day Kennedy was assasinated. If you've never busted a test, you ain't never been anywhere. DON'T QUIT, It takes lots of practice. Years and jobs later... I got to the test facility in Phoenix after laying out for almost 8 months. The inspector looked me out after my root pass. He told me if I wanted to stay and practice the rest of the day he'd give me another shot. But that time was not compensated. So I started over the second day. Made that test and went to a job in northern Arizona. That was just a gate test. When I got to the job the weld inspector gave me another test. Before I got done I have taken four more tests for qualifications for that contractor. Just take a deep breath and keep on going. Or is the man told me put that Hood down and keep them sparks flying. I hope you haven't quit by the time you're reading this.

can we talk about the coordination between his hand and the camera man when he inspected the root?
Thanks so much for this video! Just what I needed.
How did the welder get a good look at his root without a decent light and a mirror? And bridge tacks? If you’re gonna take a test at a boilermaker hall you’ll have no grinder to grind out bridge tacks. I always carried a brand new pipliner file and big saws all blade……
Do you need to line up the seems of the pipe?
As a pipe fitter ( non union) I grind the seams on the inside of the pipe back 1/2 in to 3/4 inches. So the welder gets a good penetration on his weld.
That was extremely helpful... TX..... If you can do more testing like scenarios, it would be great
More to come!
In my welding class, I have done stick, mig, and tig. And I didn't know that you could get a "sunburn" from tig.
Arc rays are like sun rays, they have uv in them
I've only welded CS, SS and chrome and I had to test for every one
I have a question? Would it be a failed welding test if one of the coupons had porosity?
There's a chance those pipe could have high pressure steam in them if you as the welder can't weld them clean you should not being doing it if a high pressure steam line explodes because of bad weld people will like die
Thank for the video sir. What hood is that it looks like a sugar scoop but ive never seen one with a flip
THANK YOU BRO AND GOD BLESS!
I worked at a 537 union shop and clocked a 4 minute complete weld from a tacked 6in. pipe.this company can under his anyone. Retired fitter.
underbid
underbid.

i saw his shirt and instantly knew he was in texas
Issac's sweating his ass off over there in Texas:)
It was extremely fucking hot that day even more with camera on me lol
Great inspector!
Awesome video! I was wondering though, how does he control the amperage of the torch? I've seen foot pedals, but for part of the video he is on his knees. Is it constant amperage?
You set your machine and weld. Duh
Looks like he's running a wheel for his argon. It's probably just one to give him his argon flow and running lift/scratch start since it looks like he's just snapping out of it which is kind of a bad habit. snap out but get that argon back on your weld until it's cool even if it's just carbon.
@@Thorn19774 i “trail” out onto the bevel.
@@aaronhobbs8716 I was taught to slowly release the foot pedal when you stop to avoid cracks, idk how you would do that if you just have on/off power
Yeah bro looks like he's just using scratch to start, which is how we train in my school in Southeast Tx, we don't use controls/pedals/ until we start working with alloys.
My next XXS 2”, I’m going to try to sign through it
Does that coupon have to be that low or can it be up higher to do the bottom and lowered for the top?
Thanks! This was great!
Once the pipe is tacked it can’t be moved, up or down. Gotta find a comfortable position, I do mine a little below chest height
I assume this is to stimulate "real world" conditions where it could be a repair/install in an existing facility, so you have to adapt to the part, no way to just move it more conveniently.

Dam thats complicated
@@Orlosthedruid obviously aircraft welding is more complicated than pipe welding, doesn't mean pipe welders aint shit. It means your way of thinking is what's wrong with America. quit hating.
Con you show some bad examples of each step.
HE DID NICE JOB
What the Welding Inspector said is 100% right.
A little compressed air to speed cooling won't hurt a test
If pipe joint get magenetic .. what should be done for welding
Any suggestion
@@riteshpatil3252 Heh, I know this is late. But someone may read this.
Hit it with a hammer, several times, hard. If that doesn't work, wrap your welding lead around the pipe and try to weld and reverse the magnetism.
You ain't testing my welds!! I said their perfect, and my word in law!! 😂
Great inspector
CONRATULATIONS, ISAAC 😛🤑🤓😎👍👌💪
Wow! Good job
This video shows how great RUclips is. This guy can barely read and he’s out here with almost 400k subs
Quick question, how long is your qualification certificate valid? Thanks for answering.
That certificate is only good for what ever company he is testing for and is good for as long is he working for that company but if he gets layoff and stays off more than 6 months he would have to re test again for that same company but if he is off less than 6months he wouldn't have to test again he's certs would still be good.and that's how it works have a good day 👍
Thanks you for this information 👍👍
What head gear does he have and what sweat bands are those???
The welders prayer.
Like always, brilliant video. Thanks guys
Our pleasure!
I'm not a welder, but curious why leave that gap and not just butt the 2 ends together?
Its to ensure full 100% weld penetration. If the joint were tight fitted, it would be incredibly difficult to get full weld penetration to go the full thickness to the inside of the pipe. Pipe and plates that are butt welded are usually fitted with a 1/8" gap and the faces of the joints beveled to ensure full penetration of the weld arc. The thicker the piece of material to be welded, the more important the fit up technique is. This is why fitting is so important to the success of the welder. If he did not fit the two pipes together properly with a gap and a bevel, he would have failed the bend tests.
black pipe with tig. we have to preheat to 200c "400f"
Great Job! Congratulations! The only thing I noticed was the fact that the Safety Shield was not put in place while the inspector was doing the bends.
I hate that I wasted this much time in both fields to only walk away but... it is what it is.
its ok buddy,keep going
Hey man don't be discouraged by what one welder said. We learn by messing up, until we get it right
I started back in Sept of 63.
I show up for my tests 2 monsters deep with a stick of jerky and a fresh tin of cope in my pocket
Am I the only one who saw him load the samples in the press for the stress test and was expecting that carbon steel to shatter 😂
Question is it allowed to grind a weld off if it came out wrong ?
yes. but when you hand over the pipe its over :) some Firms ask a special test without Grinder. only hand files allowed. and with time limit.
yes we are working on a repair vid coming out soon. "repairing your weld when taking a test"
Can you come back and try again or is it a one time chance
Good shit Issac 👏 u might be a welder now!! Lol 😆 jkn😜 You and Rodriguez are great welding instructors. Learned allot from u guys up there. 👍
Lol thank you
Cool. Useful video
I can do this, but better with co2 mig mag. Am i hired ?
Good job
Whats your helmet brand?
Neat, the information great. Thank you.
