That’s interesting he specifically called out climbing mountains with MFT and telephoto lenses because I want them to continue to support MFT for that exact use case. It sounds like they’re already doing it, but they should really lean into the small lenses and even smaller camera bodies for MFT. That’s how you differentiate from full frame and really give people a reason to consider the platform.
With small full frame cameras like the ZVE1 / A7C ii and small APSc lenses for small APC camera bodies to step down to the much M43 sensor there has to be a very good reason. The power of M43 was always being small but it appears Panasonic forgot that with the G9ii. I'd buy a new gx800 with fast phase detect autofocus, no crop 4k and a quiet version of the 20mm F1.7 tomorrow - and i'd pay 1000+ for it. My Sony cameras are great A7R V being perfect except I don't want to carry it everywhere unlike my gx800 with current 20mm F1.7- if a new version took 4k with no crop and had working autofocus in video then I'd carry it everywhere.

But you can select MFT or APS-C crop modes on Full Frame cameras that have sufficient resolution (6K/8K). And you can still (with adaptors sometimes), put on those FF cameras long lenses that would only cover MFT or APS-C only, so they can be smaller and lighter than the FF equivalents. The advantage of a single hybrid FF/APS-C/MFT camera is that you can still switch to FF if you need. With the advent of FF global shutter sensors, read-out speed is not an issue anymore so the advantages of MFT become less apparent. FF has the advantage of, potentially, having more resolution (there is more real state) and collecting more light, so you don't need your lenses to be as fast as you need in MFT to get similar results. I think MFT had its place in camera development (I owned a lovely GH3) but it will be a format of the past sooner or later. What could continue to exist are MFT long lenses to put on FF cameras in crop mode, so you get a small size footprint to go trekking, wildlife, travel...The different is camera sizes between FF and APS-C/MFT is becoming smaller. Only the lenses could make the difference, although to get equal amounts of light in MFT (relative to FF) you need very fast lenses and those cannot be very small because of the laws of physics (a MFT/APS-C f/1.5 or f/2 lens, is quite big, similar to a FF f/2.8).

I feel like they don't care about making higher end cameras anymore. Where is the Sh2 or s1x? They need to annouce one of them before the summer. Without a crop in 4k.
Sony has the advantage with that fx3 sensor .. but aside from that all their other hybrids are worse in terms of video production relative to the Panasonic offering . I too wish Panny will release that 6k 50p no crop low rolling shutter dual iso hybrid .. Recently switched from Sony to Lumix S5ii and S5iix … I am enjoying shooting using Lumix. Just ordered the 70-200 f2.8 Lumix lens and can’t wait to try that out.
This was super interesting to watch. It's nice to know where they stand and what's their vision for the future. I hope they announce something in their cinema lineup soon, because I've been waiting for a full frame successor for the EVA1. I love what they have done with the S5IIX but I don't like the mirrorless form factor so I want something that handles a bit better for shooting video. It surely seems like they are listening to their clients though, so I'm excited to see what the future brings for Panasonic.
I agree with you. It would be fantastic to see all the S1H mk2 features and have all the features of a cinema camera…. On board xlrs, sdi, built in ND etc.
If I understand correctly, that was a clear commitment to MFT. Mr. Tsumura-san made me very happy with that. My GX80 is such an excellent and simply the optimal camera for everyday use and for taking on vacation, traveling and simply everywhere. I would really be very sad if MFT were to be discontinued. I love the Panasonic MFT system. I would so much like a GM5MKII and a GX9MKII and would buy both IMMEDIATELY if they were available! The GM and GX series are absolutely cult!!! I remember my cousin's wedding. There were 2 professional photographers in the church with all their FF camera equipment and I had my GM1 with the 20mm in my pocket and took a few snapshots. Later they asked me, you didn't have a camera with you, did you? What did you take these great photos with? I then showed them the GM1 ... Nobody could believe it!
Thanks for this interview Two questions Ibwould have liked you ask: What is the future of S1 series ? Why only MFTS has Leica monochrome profile and not the S5 ii ?
i'd like a gh7s with three native iso's, ibis, phase, 14mp (minimum) and directional sound that amplifies the audio signal according to the direction and zoom level of the lens :D
Thank you for putting together this interview. I have multiple Panasonic MFT cameras, including the G9 M2, and am happy with it. I have the 100-400mm M2 lens, which goes up to 800mm in FF equivalency. When Toshiyuki Tsumura-sa mentioned 1600mm, is he referring to using a teleconverter on it? I tried to buy a 1.4 teleconverter the other day but couldn't find one. I am renting the OM SYSTEM 150-600mm f/5-6.3 lens and have some serious doubts that I will buy it because of its size and cost. For roughly the same money, I could get a 200mm 2.8 instead, less if I pick it up used or pay less.
I still appreciate MFT as a niche product, if only because you can have much smaller lenses which is great for traveling. I think it’s a great format for wildlife photographers and people starting out. Plus from a cinema standpoint, there are some really really nice lenses that would be way too expensive if they had more glass in them.
I am an artist and MFT is perfect for me in the studio. The G9 is fabulous for stop-animation and the smaller sizes makes set up and moving around so much easier for a one man operation. I also love the G9 outdoors. The IBIS gets me shots few other cameras can get so easily. As far as I am concerned MFT is the sweet-spot for size, affordability, versatility, creativity, capability, and quality.
I think it's smart of Panasonic to keep M43 going. After all, they're a business. And M43 cameras provide an access point for people new to photography and video. As well as a means of someone interested in video / photography to be able to afford to stay involved in creative production with M43 cameras.
Wow great job with the interview! G9ii is an amazing camera and sure its a bit bigger, but the amount of video features it has and its being marketed as a professional photo camera. Toshiyuki Tsumura-san said something worth nothing tho "the individual production and professional production are becoming borderless..." cant wait to see what happens in the future!
Somehow I have the feeling that with the orientation towards "creators", Panasonic is focussing more on users who need quick results rather than high-quality works of art. The S5 mark II allows quick creation of individualised mass photos, but I see a certain decline in the achievable quality of the photos compared to the S5 mark I. I hope I am wrong and Panasonic will also build cameras for the customers who need ultimate pictures quality and not fast results straight out of the camera in sufficient quality (only)!
This is my fear too. It seems like they're going down the path of marketing all their future products to content creators rather than professional filmmakers and that makes me sad. I don't want to look elsewhere to invest in professional video cameras but it looks like they're leaving us with no choice here. Sony is still plagued with their dreaded Sony colors and not ideal brittle codecs, Canon is always finding ways to cripple their cameras no matter how high end and flagship it is (like the super 16mm crop to shoot 120fps on the c500 mark II), Blackmagic is on the right path of incorporating an OLPF in their cameras (FINALLY!! Only took them 11 years!), but they're still plagued with not ideal body designs, FPN and other ugly artifacts that make their way into your footage and awful lowlight, plus who needs 12K anyway!?!? Then there's Red, yes the Komodo is a great step in the right direction for RED, but you still need to invest $10k+ overall just to get the thing up and running, and RED's track record for reliability has never been the best. Plus the crop issues with those cameras is still a thing. And no normal person can afford an Alexa and all the extra expenses that comes with it's power consumption and rig support needs. There's still hope Panasonic can pull through with an updated EVA or Varicam but that hope is dimming with every public appearance/announcement they make . At least a Varicam LT is pretty affordable on the used market right now.
Exactly, the difference in video image quality between the S5II and S5/S1 is huge when cropping a bit. Of course the AF and IBIS are better, but details rendering is even worse than my old A7III.
@@JonackFilm , I mean first of all micro contrasts (small details’ rendition), dynamic range and low light performance. But also the color science. The stills out of the S5 mark II looks like something between a real camera and a smartphone. Compare for yourself photos taken on both cameras and you will definitely notice the difference and it will be, alas, not in favour of the S5 mark II.
I agree with what he said about MFT. I used Sony FF for about 6 years and got tired of lugging around large lenses. I have the GH6 and Lumix 100-400. Carrying that around for 3 hours hiking or biking for 3-4 hours is more welcoming than a large FF lens (Sony 200-600) that will not provide the same reach and tire me out more. I can easily shoot gorgeous 6k video with unbeatable image stabilization and get quality stills as well. I tried the G9 ll, but will keep the GH6 for a variety of reasons, although it is a very good camera. In terms of the PDAF, I'm content with using the quick focus feature on the GH6 to get initial focus and then go manual from there. Works like a charm.
Good to know that Panasonic are committed to Micro Four Thirds. It would have been good if you'd asked about compact cameras like the FZ300 and LX100, I'd much rather use a compact camera than an interchangeable lens camera or smart phone.
I've had a surprising experience lately with my G9 and 100-400mm lens, trying the digital teleconverter in the menu of the G9. I've had the camera for several years but didn't explore this menu option because I had been told it was just for video. However, I often shoot JPEGS and decided to give it a try for bird photography. It worked far better than I thought it would. Lumix offered an iZoom feature in the menu of its FZ1000 bridge camera. I shot the Leica version of this camera and iZoom doubled the 400mm optical reach to 800mm, often without a noticeable penalty. I'd love to see Lumix pursue iZoom for the G9 Mk2 or 3, maybe in conjunction with a superfine JPEG mode. Having an ultralight 200-800mm lens with an option to reach 1,600mm's when needed, while adding no weight to the camera, would be amazing.
Why no question about a PDAF GH6 II or GH7 timeline? I would have also asked: is there a plan to create an L-mount GH6 equivalent? Personally I have no interest in investing in a collection of L-mount lenses, and am still investing in new MFT glass. The smaller lenses suit my creative needs more than FF does. I would love for Panasonic to release a 12mm f1.7 G lens, especially if it is like the 42.5 and has close focus capabilities. They also need to create a Panasonic 100 or 105mm f2.8 macro.
Photography is set to become just a feature of extracting frames from a constant RAW video stream, Panasonic (imho) needs to 110% embrace their video strength (where m43 shines) and stop pandering to antiquated birding boomers and their "who needs video" screeches, especially in a world where >90% of content is video. Let JIP-OM become dollar-store pentax if they even manage to not go bankrupt next year and focus on the future. Panasonic has PDAF now, the sky is the limit. Best ergo, best menus, best video codecs, best IBIS, best colors. Expand the FF lens line-up and work on software integration to make sharing content seamless.
I think you might find "antiquated birding boomers" have a lot more money to spend then a lost of customers so it would not be a great plan to just focus on other markets!!
What do I think? Does a vice president of a large industry answer the interviewer's (agreed) questions by reading the answers from the notebook? You could also put the usher of the General Management building in his place.
And one other thing. We can agree that LUMIX has -superior-color science in all its lineup than Sony’s. We all now that no matter the size of the gig, LUMIX is the proper tool for any job and for artist that know what they want and have total control of it and it’s not an overly expensive toy and all of that, but for once I’ll would like to see LUMIX/Panasonic win some cinematography awards just for the fun of it: brand can use a boost of spirit and pride.
Great interview thanks! These itw answers are really "safe". Panasonic is a very discreet company . If the S1Hii has; Internal NDs PDAF FF rolling shutter below 15ms S35 rolling shutter below 10ms Low latency output (sub 3 frames) 4k-6k60 no crop Varicam colors It'll be a hit 🎯 BUT, if on top of that they put it in box, like they did with the BS1H, and do a BS2H or BS1Hii + 6G SDI TC/GEN At 6-8k$ THAT would be a spiritual successor of the EVA or LT line. And become a solid competitor to the FX9/Burano/RED... Even Alexa in some instances. From a Marketing standpoint they just need 2 or 3 blockbuster movies or series shot on it. And people will start considering again. Panasonic killed it on Ozark, Orange is the new Black, 13 reasons why, etc. They just need new ones...
I think Panasonic are lacking a pro super telephoto option for m43. The 100-400 is prosumer - it prioritises compactness at the expense of speed. They're not fully leveraging the crop factor/reach of the system for wildlife photographers if their only option past 400mm equiv is a slow zoom with a reputation for poor build quality.

I really wish he pressed him more on the Varicam and Eva lineup topic and didn't let him off the hook so easily with that bs corporate response. There's a lot of working professionals out here who've chosen their brand to make a living who right now feel abandoned and left in the dark and are going to have no other choice but to switch brands when it's time to update their gear. How does Panasonic not see this?? Or do they not care and just want to market to content creators on YT? Meanwhile Sony is releasing a new cinema camera seemingly every other month. But I don't enjoy shooting on Sony because skin tones from their cameras make everyone look like they're suffering from kidney failure. Even on the $11k FX9, skin tones always look yellow-green, it's so unflattering. Makes absolutely no sense to me why they're giving up on the Varicam! So many Netflix productions chose that camera over REDs. But once all these productions started switching over to full frame, Panasonic just went "welp, it's been real guys" and just flat out gave up, when they already had an amazing foundation of a camera system to continue building upon. Really is shameful of them.
Either I'm a super fast reader or Japanese is an extremely inefficient spoken language, but it he said at least 3 times more than what was translated. I hope it was done right. Interesting interview, but it didn't really reveal much.
The newest camera from Panasonic would be an S6 with a 24mm sensor with two batteries with two side grips, with 512 GB of internal memory like the phones have, a 6" display that is very flexible so you can you also do vlogging, 4k at 120 without crop, and a 20-60mm lens in F 1.8, to be able to zoom without losing focus. This camera and this lens would be sensational and could gain a large market share especially if it would have dual ois.that's what you panasonic should do.
So, instead of making it compatible with other cameras to avoid frustrating other users and potentially increase profits, they made such a foolish move. I can't afford to switch cameras, and neither can some other people. ;(
Panasonic is the most unserious player in the industry. In a highly competitive industry, it’s unbelievable that Panasonic as at March 2024 does not have a full frame cameras that can do 4k120p no crop, when the competition like Canon. Sony & Nikon have cameras that can do 8k60p internal.
What do you think of Panasonic’s latest moves? Is there any camera/lens from the brand that you would like to see in the future?

I can't believe that he wasn't asked when the GX9 II will be released!
They won't comment on future products. Would have been a poor use of finite seat time.
I feel like they don't care about making higher end cameras anymore. Where is the Sh2 or s1x? They need to annouce one of them before the summer. Without a crop in 4k.
With the existing Leica Q3 and upcoming SL3, I am only expecting future Lumix cameras to be better in many ways.
Sony has the advantage with that fx3 sensor .. but aside from that all their other hybrids are worse in terms of video production relative to the Panasonic offering .
I too wish Panny will release that 6k 50p no crop low rolling shutter dual iso hybrid .. I really don't understand why they don't slap a faster processor on the s5iix and call it a new name , that's all they have to do ..
@@solarion33 if they don't do something soon they will pay big time. Most of their users left the GH5 for Sony or Canon years ago. And more will leave when Sony starts Adding open gate. Fujifilm has even passed Panasonic. Smh
Thank you.Very interesting to follow lumix future plans .The NFT system continuous development is very important to many users, enjoying the advantages on this system.I just bought the G9ii with 12-25 Leica lens.We appreciate the contact with Lumix customers.
Recently switched from Sony to Lumix S5ii and S5iix … I am enjoying shooting using Lumix. Just ordered the 70-200 f2.8 Lumix lens and can’t wait to try that out.
This is a great lens.
You're gonna love the results of that combo. I do.
❤ EVA2 - full frame l-mount, electronic ND, OIS, and a really good touch screen and EVF as good as the S1H.
That sounds more like the s1h markii instead of eva2
Thanks for this interview
Two questions Ibwould have liked you ask:
What is the future of S1 series ?
I think he talks about the “pixel to pixel” mode on the G9ii. Like digital crops to reach 1600m
@@artistjoh And it probably helps having a deeper depth of field.
@@VariTimo For close up work, such as food photography, stop-animation etc, greater depth of field is exactly what you need most of the time.
I think it's smart of Panasonic to keep M43 going. After all, they're a business. And M43 cameras provide an access point for people new to photography and video. As well as a means of someone interested in video / photography to be able to afford to stay involved in creative production with M43 cameras.
the 100-400 is my favourite mft lens they should make a 200-500!
Should have asked about the successor to the S1R . Also , any plans for a quality compact using a MFT sized sensor?
I think Panasonic closed their cinema division and you'll only see lumix cameras from now on @brendanmcnamara7581
Ah interesting. How have you seen a decline in quality?
Did he say anything about 28-70mm f2.8 L mount in backstage?
Just get the Sigma
GX9 II plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Why no question about a PDAF GH6 II or GH7 timeline? I would have also asked: is there a plan to create an L-mount GH6 equivalent? Personally I have no interest in investing in a collection of L-mount lenses, and am still investing in new MFT glass. The smaller lenses suit my creative needs more than FF does. I would love for Panasonic to release a 12mm f1.7 G lens, especially if it is like the 42.5 and has close focus capabilities. They also need to create a Panasonic 100 or 105mm f2.8 macro.
Eventually the new generation of the gh series will have PDAF.
Photography is set to become just a feature of extracting frames from a constant RAW video stream,
Panasonic (imho) needs to 110% embrace their video strength (where m43 shines) and stop pandering to antiquated birding boomers and their "who needs video" screeches, especially in a world where >90% of content is video.
The translation is not very good, it misses some bits, e.g. it was missed that the 100-400mm used with the 2x teleconverter gets 1600mm equivalent.
Absolutely not! Lumix for skin tones is horrid...
@@livestreamsuk6004Not really if you just tamp down the reds in post

@@andresgonzalezcerda7635 the successor of pen-f which never release
Going to keep using this Varicam forever lol
As always their anwers sounds like something you would read out of a manual or brochure.
to take some possible hints from the executive of what is to come , I'd say we would see more MFT , my guess is a a GH7 and a box camera ala BS2h
MFT for the win. Best system to date 👌
what an interesting interview :)
Great interview thanks!
These itw answers are really "safe". Panasonic is a very discreet company .
If the S1Hii has;
Internal NDs
PDAF
FF rolling shutter below 15ms
S35 rolling shutter below 10ms
Low latency output (sub 3 frames)
4k-6k60 no crop
Varicam colors
It'll be a hit 🎯
BUT, if on top of that they put it in box, like they did with the BS1H, and do a BS2H or BS1Hii + 6G SDI TC/GEN
At 6-8k$
THAT would be a spiritual successor of the EVA or LT line.
GX9ii now!
Great interview!
X100VI shoved that there is market for small cameras. GX with PDAF and maybe weather sealing will sell like hot cakes 😊
Please add “Custom Frame Markers” aspect ratios to S1
gx9 markii and Lumix g9 markii with pdaf
EVA2 would be amazing!! FX6 beater :D
Ask him for the new GH7
The "fast expansion of PDAF" has so far produced only two cameras in 14 months...
Let them cook good cameras, instead of shitting camera models that cannibalize between them like Sony does.
They gave up on the greatest series of Cinema Cameras. The VariCam.
Shameful. So goddamned shameful.
S1-II ….please when ?? My S1 is almost 5 years old. I am dying to give my money to Panasonic and Panasonic doesn’t want it 😢
There must be a lot of mountain climbers with cameras buying Lumix to base your whole line up on it......
That camera and lens, if possible to make at all, would cost $30000 and weigh 10kgs lol.
So, instead of making it compatible with other cameras to avoid frustrating other users and potentially increase profits, they made such a foolish move. I can't afford to switch cameras, and neither can some other people. ;(
👌
Panasonic is the most unserious player in the industry. In a highly competitive industry, it’s unbelievable that Panasonic as at March 2024 does not have a full frame cameras that can do 4k120p no crop, when the competition like Canon. Sony & Nikon have cameras that can do 8k60p internal.
Sadly, the focus will be creators and not prosumers. A new gx9 it seems will never come.
Are we getting a new eva1? Thats gonna be a no from me dog was his answer.
Nice try, Toshiyuki, but I only buy American cameras made in America.
