Canβt believe itβs been almost 60 years since this wonderful song was released. I was a teenager then and have heard it hundreds of times. Unlike me, California Dreaminβ will never get old. Love your reactionβ¦blessings to you both from Vancouver Island.
They are singing 4 part, counterpoint harmony which is very rare to hear. Simply beautiful!
Beach Boys.
The solo singer is Denny Doherty, the only Canadian member of the group. The other man is John Phillips who was married to Michelle Phillips the slender girl, the other girl is Cass Elliot, who had a fantastic voiceβ¦..she went on to have a solo career, She passed away suddenly at an early age. I think The Mamas & the Papas make most people smile that hear them. Cass Elliot is a powerhouse vocally. Great song and great reaction from the both of you.
John Phillips, the solo singer, was the organizer and promoter of the 1967 Monterrey Pop Festival, which was the coming out party of some of the biggest stars of rock. Janis Joplin, The Who, Otis Redding, The Byrds, Steve Miller Band, Jimi Hendrix, Mamas and the Papas, Grateful Dead, Simon and Garfunkel, Ravi Shankar, and about 20 more groups played there. There is a film of the concert on YT.

Denny Doherty (the male singer) was from Canada. Fans of the kids show Theodore Tugboat will remember him as the harbour master.
This was from 1965 - the hippie times; my older brother moved to California after high school in 1970 with his guitar & is still there today;)
That great flute solo was performed by jazz flutist Bud Shank.

A golden oldie. Ahh the 60's. A time of hippies, Kombi vans, and flower power. Downunder it was the Seekers and the Easybeats. My parents era, and I grew up listening. Fun in the sun, building sand castles on the beach and boogie boarding in the surf. What a great time to be alive.

The Mamas & the Papas were a great folk rock group in the 60's. I had their records. They were known for their smooth harmonies. They had lots of great hits such as "Monday, Monday", "Dedicated To The One I Love", "Words Of Love", "Dancing In The Street", "Look Through My Window", "Creeque Alley", "Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)", "Safe In My Garden", "I Saw Her Again" etc. Mama Cass Elliot went solo & had a big hit with "Dream A Little Dream Of Me".

This is an interesting convergence, when you get a chance Angelina Jordan does a beautiful melancholy version of this song. Its beyond beautiful and has a different feel than the original.

Written by the late John Phillips. He was the Papa. Michelle Phillips is the only surviving member. She is 1 of the Mamas. The members were in 2 bands in my hometown San Francisco before forming. After the break up of the marriage and the band, Michelle became an actress.

California is still beautiful. Many haters from the red states but if California was county its economy would surpass Canada and most EU counties. Still has beautiful beaches and mountains and deserts and forests. Sure the cities have issues. So does most cites in US. New Orleans , Miami, Atlanta, Little Rock, Mobile, Boston, every city has issues regardless of political tendencies.
I lived in California in the late 80s til 1990 and even with bl00ds and cr1ps ki11ing each other like crazy it was still a good state to be in. It would take millions for me to go back now but God bless you for still liking it there

Back when California was a jewel in the crown of the U.S.. A beautiful place. Largely ruined by poliical policies now - sadly.
Then why is the crime rate worse in Florida? Last time I checked that's a Red sate correct ? Also California has the 5th largest economy In the world. When you add New York the other place you seem to hate They have a bigger economy than all the other states combined
So I'm really sorry you hate our county doing so well offends your sensibly. Look at Red states numbers on pretty much everything your whining about is greater in thouse states Before you taah our county's best . And the problems California is facing are the same as every city and town in the country. Red states have the highest drug use and it's not cirys its rural communities that its overwhelming hard . Pretending things don't exist will never solve anything.
