55 years later and still an awesome song
It's a timeless classic
make it 56, born in 96' and still a classic to me
My aunt and my mother this is their day, same age as the band members.
In 1964 my aunt was a senior in HS she saw the Beatles play Philly and I’m jealous.
I’m a year older than this song, lol..
Classics never get old.
Better than ever
Mama Cass Elliot is not just a backup she is the best singer in the group and the most famous!
Michelle Phillips was arguably more famous for a longer time given her successful acting career.
And the first to die in like 1974 in her early 30's!!
@@alphaomega7191 because the heavier one diedp
I hate to be one of those people, but Mama Cass was not more famous than Michelle Phillips.
@@joeybee1914 Until she died!
To get a better view of Cass Elliot's voice, try "Dream a little dream of me." Outstanding vocals!
Words of Love, also.
@@kentclark6420 Words of Love is a great suggestion, Cass does some groovy dancing in there too!
Yes - please give it up for Cass! also really like her collaboration with John Denver -- Midnight Special (yep - I'm old) ruclips.net/video/NKdknYaSHgE/видео.html
True, the only one of the group to branch out to a solo career . But John Phillips didn't want her in the group because he was perpetually fat shaming her.
Yes
This was considered to be folk rock in the 60s and 70s and this group was iconic and this song was a huge hit for them
Check out their song “12:30. “
Most them started out in folk music.
It's not really reasonable to expect you guys to know about the music artists from 40+ years ago. Kudos for your interest in them though. Lots of cool music to discover.
Although, they were world famous for decades, sold 40 million records, and are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Someday in the not to distant future, if you say "Michael Jackson," people will look at you blankly, and I've already seen music reactors on RUclips who had never heard of Madonna.
@@brandonflorida1092 I remember somebody once asking "Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings?"

Cultural literacy does though make a person more interesting to talk with.
Mamas & Papas was way before your time I'm sure...lol. I grew up in the 60's so I know who they are.
Mama Cass Elliott's (the heavy set lady) greatest talent was her ability to harmonize with anyone. She had a great solo voice too.
The voice harmonics in this song are top notch.
Im a metalhead in my heart but I love old school rock almost as much
I am Metalhead too, yeah... I love this song🤘
Agree 100 percent!
I play all sorts of metal and psychedelic shit but yeah the 60s is where it all started. You can’t beat good pop music tbh. It’s just catchy. And back in the day it was made by actual talent.
Nothing says 60s/70s like a flute solo.
Jethro Tull
Canned Heat as well
Hi kids. Mama Cass Elliot was the rock of this quartet. Her pretty face and pear shaped body produced pitch perfect booming resonance unique and unmatched at the time. She was the Mama's and the Papas. Cheers!
This song was composed in the early 60s by John (tall guy with the guitar) and Michelle Phillips (woman on the left), husband and wife. The were in NYC in the winter playing some other gig (before the Mama's and Papa's was formed), and it started to snow. Being from L.A., Michelle had never seen snow, so they went for a walk. Not realizing how cold it was, they "stopped into a church [they] passed along the way", for the sole reason of getting warm. Needing a reason for entering the church, they "got down on [their] knees and...pretend to pray". When they returned to their apartment, they wrote the song together. When they returned to L.A., they gave the song to Barry McGuire ("Eve of Destruction") in 1963, but his version never took off. Later, when they formed the M and P's, they released the song as a single from their first album in 1965. The song shot to the top of the charts, and the rest is history. If you haven't already done so, you might react to Angelina's version of this classic pop song: ruclips.net/video/EBI7Km3z7-U/видео.html It is an Absolute MASTERPIECE!!!
The fat girl in the group is not just a backup singer, she is easily the best singer in the group. When the group broke up she began what was a very successful solo career. On July 24, 1974, “Mama Cass” Elliot, one of the most memorable and charismatic members of the Los Angeles-based folk rock group The Mamas & the Papas, died in her sleep in a London apartment at the age of 32. It was the death heard about 'round the world, or at least around California.
Cool info 😎
John Phillips? You mean the pervert that used to sleep with his daughter?
@@george217 That's the same asshole, George. And while there are many accounts of John's assholeness (is that a word? well it should be), Mackenzie Phillip's (not Michelle's biological daughter) book was published after his death, so he was never afforded the opportunity to defend himself. And instead of causing John defamation while he was alive, she ended up hurting many family members who were left to deal with the public persecution. What a mess!
That sound is pure singing talent without auto-tune.
Truth
But lots of reverb.
The Girls were the best singers in trhe group...Mama Cass is legendary!
One of the most iconic tracks of the 60s. In the top 10 of the decade for sure.
Mama Cass was an amazing singer and passed way too young, she was 32, RIP Cass!!!
Their vocals are spine tinglingly Love em ❤️❤️❤️
These guys were best known for beautiful harmonies. Mama Cass Elliot was an amazing vocalist and, in many ways, carried the vocals for the whole group. Great reaction. You two are adorable. 🥰🌺✌️
Truth. She was at least 50% of the groups talent, probably more.
it's a perfect song, there's a few perfect songs out there
No doubt. It really is. I've never gotten sick of it. It's vibrant and moody at the same time. They captured something beautiful.
AGREE!!
Have you guys done Norman Greenbaums "Spirit in the sky"? That was my jam when i was in 5th grade. I had that little 45 record.
Love this group, anything in this eta still gets me. Try Buffalo Springfield and the song is for what it's worth amazingly so it's still relevant today
All time classic! Nobody does flute solos anymore ;)
Except Ian Anderson......
Lol, gotta love it.
Karl Denson is the most contemporary flutist I know.

White Stripes Seven Nations Army of coarse.
Listening to this song, walking through the freezing streets of Delhi in December , going to my construction site , sweet memories ❣️✨
Mama Cass was the Talent of the Mamas and Papas … check out her voice on Dream a Little Dream of Me ….
The thin mama Michelle Phillips is the mother of Chynna Phillips of the group Wilson Phillips the Wilsons are the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys Michelle Phillips is also the stepmother Mackenzie Phillips star of the situation comedy one-day-at-a-time
and Michelle Phillips became an actress as well. co-stared in several TV series.
And McKenzie was sleeping with her father at 18 years old. It went on for years.
Mackenzie was boning HER own father😒😳😳😳
@@handsome-brute2666 True Story. She's spoken extensively about their affair. I don't think she would lie about something like that. She talked about doing drugs as an 11 year old child with famous musicians and Hollywood stars. Crazy life.
@@jefflast9489 even Mick Jagged said he WANTED her SINCE she was about 10 years old..but him being WHITE..he wasnt ostracized like R.Kelly for it!😤😳😒
You will probably Mama Cass as the woman saying “Oh wow” during Janis Joplin’s performance at Monterey Pop. The M&Ps actually organized the show.
It was mostly John who helped organize and produce the Monterey Pop Festival. TMATP were definitely a key draw. John rarely gets the credit he deserves for his multitude of talents.
The Mamas and the Papas were well known for their amazing harmonies. They have a nice repertoire of songs. This song is so special to me because I was born in Los Angeles and I'm still here. Being 65 and having grown up listening to all genres of music, I love watching your reactions to all music. Enjoy the journey!👍🏾👵🏿🎶🤗.
Still one of my all time favourite groups and I’m your age as well so we’re on the same page as far as growing up with the same genre of music. The 60’s 70’s and 80’s is where it was at for me and still is!
The haunting magic comes at 4:30 when Mama Cass only sings "dreamin" while Mama Michelle sings "California Dreamin" Then Cass sings an extended "On such a winters day" while Michelle sings "California Dreamin" at the same time. It is mind bending yet it is so haunting and flows ethereally.
I’ve always thought that too! Makes it difficult to do car karaoke by myself tho haha
❤️
This is Epic and Legendary! Love it. Cannot replace true blessed talent.
John Phillips in the blue shirt started the band.
His wife is the blonde her name is Michelle.
They were in NYC hating the weather being from LA.
The church in question is St Patrick’s Cathedral, Michelle went inside and John waited outside.
John and Michelle wrote the song together.
Omg. Just realized this song is 55 YEARS OLD!! Thanks for reacting to the classics. PS- no auto tune
I really envy you guys. The 60's, 70's, 80's, so much great music to discover!
For those of us who lived in that era we had no idea just how great that music was and that young people of today would like it and enjoy it. I thank all of you reactors for playing the sound track of our lives. It was a special time. We can close our eyes and relive our youth. Wish I could rewind my body!
1965 - 66 The Mama's and the Papas were right in the to middle of the flower power movement out in San Francisco. "Great ! Fantastic ! Harmonies." Don't stop with California Dreaming. The Mama's and the Papas have an entire catalog of hits.
Infact... You should really check out the red DVD " California Dreaming. The songs of the Mama's and Papa's.
You two are delightful. Don't feel bad about not knowing this group. You're young! I have never heard of you two, but I am happy this video popped up.
I like you two and I am glad that you gave this tune a shot.
I was 7 or 8 when this song came out, so I have loved this music for over 50 years, yeah I'm old.
I look forward to hearing more from you.
DEFINITELY check out Cass Elliot on her own -- magnificent voice and clear as a bell. Art Garfunkel was like the male version of her. And that flute solo is well-known among flute players -- thanks to legendary session player Bud Shank.
I just watched the film on the Wrecking Crew. I love learning about session players who were so influential
John and Michelle Phillips wrote the song. I have my 1965 45 RPM original recording by Barry McGuire and he plays his harmonica. The Mommas And The Pappas version is the Flute replacing the Harmonica. Many people think this is the original but it isn't..John Phillips was the producer and song writer for the group but also wrote songs for other groups and performers.
My favourite mamas n papas album is the best of the mamas n papas. They all great.
Michelle Phillips was also quite the actress and was on Knots Landing in the 90's
A little insight into why "The Mamas and the Papas" - you got the groovy part of this, and this was very much the days of the Hippies
Mamas and papas were how hippies referred to women and men, not just mothers and fathers
Great reaction. As a little aside, I just love when my kids and g-kids bring new songs to me - and I surprise them by singing (badly) the lyrics of the covers of some of these good ole classic oldies lol
Hahahahaha....How ridiculous. Make up another one!
@@fidge54 perhaps you have the true meaning behind The Mama's and the Papas, apart from 'make up another one'?
More commonly, "my old man" and "my old lady."
The guy singing the lead parts is Denny Doherty. He later played the Harbor Master in the childrens show Theodore Tugboat. They got their name while watching a documentary about bikers and their ladies, who they called Mamas and the 2 women said "Thats us, we are Mamas so you must be Papas"
Michelle Phillips the skinnier girl is the only remaining member left alive, Cass Elliott(Mama Cass) died in 1974, John Phillips guy on guitar died in 2001, Denny Doherty died in 2007
You both are great and I think it’s awesome you react to old classic songs and you’re not expected to know these old groups ❤️
No one should expect you to know anything about music that is over 50 years old. It's enough that you're interested in hearing it and enjoying it! It brings fond memories to watch you guys hear something for the first time and remind us what it was like for us way back when!
Michelle Phillips is an all-time snack in her day. just breathtakingly stunning, I'd take her at this age vs just about any woman today. nevermind considering how beautifully she aged. she is the definition of Glow Up.
"They don't look like nobody's mommas and poppas". I love it
House of the rising sun is another you should do its iconic
Another Groovy toon from the Flower Power generation ✌️
😁
Singing back up to this song is harder than it looks. The two females do a wonderful job. What makes it difficult is the timing and you have to come in just right.
Mama Cass was the one in the audience with the sunglasses in the Janis Joplin video Ball and Chain
And when they're really wailing. Michelle & Cass are sailing. Hey, they really nail me to the wall.
PP&M
This is Flower Power music,,,stuff like this,,,The gold 60s,. Beatles,, Motown+ FUNK BROTHERS The best 10 years of music.....✌️🎸⛵😁4 me. Thanks.... The 70s were everywhere....still like some...

Being from San Diego, California, I always felt like this was our state anthem. I was 12 when this came out.❤️

The guy in the blue shirt and the blonde had kids that became famous singers in the early 90's!!
This song I believe came from a trip to Chicago or such in the middle of winter where they came dressed for southern California. They were freezing and uncomfortable. This is their story. Mama Cass might have been a hitchhiker they picked up who could sing awesome. Many back stories to this group. Wonderful time!
Pure harmonic vocalization...so soulful and heart warming. Groovy indeed. So nice to see young people respect the music of my generation! All sorts.
Damn!, I was in high-school when this was popular. How in heck would you know of them?
I still have the original vinyl
💃🔥💃🔥💃🔥💃🔥💃
Hey, Ya'll. Just commenting on Asia's opening comment here. Please don't razz my friends ASIA and B.J. in the comments if they don't know a song. Isn't' that why we're all here? We are all here to learn and love and reminisce on come good music. I remember this song playing in the car when I was 5 yrs old and Mom was taking me to Kindergarten. I was so moved by the music and the harmonies that I started crying! My Mom thought that I didn't want to go to school but I just was so moved by this song on the radio. Needless to say, I've always loved this song!
They are the classic example of great 4 part harmony - maybe one of the best. They have a huge list of great songs, many Top 10 material. The best of their popular songs are Monday Monday, Creeque Alley, and I Saw Her Again. A few of their lesser known but GREAT harmony songs are Rose in Spanish Harlem, Dancing Bear, and Got A Feelin'.
I'm glad you reacted to this beautiful song! I was glad to see that you enjoyed it a lot. I know her when I was little, my father had many cassettes with songs of this style. I'm using the translator, I hope it's understood...
Other suggestions from those times:
- “Reflections od my life” (1967) of Marmalade
-"Silence is golden"(1967) of Tremeloes
-"A whiter shade of pale" (1967) of Procol Harum
-"Young girl" of (60´s) of Gary Puckett & The Union Gap Enjoy!
¡Saludos, desde Argentina!
First guy who steps up, I admire him. What a good voice, I wish I had that confidence
The whole back ground story of them is really juicy. Still great music.😊
Cass had so much range and absolutely fearless when she sang! This song in particular doesn’t show her off but trust me, vocal BADDASS!
Oh how I miss those days in So Cal
60s and 70s 🥲🤗😎🤘🏻💜☮️🇺🇸
Tall guy wrote the song. His wife, the thin girl, wrote the 2nd verse.
You should check out The Box’s Top-(The letter ) great 👍
That was a throw back for sure!! Nicely done both of you. They were also the beginning of a legacy group as the Phillips(married couple) daughter Chynna formed with the Wilson Sisters (Daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys) formed Wilson Phillips..try "Hold On" by them.
Rip mama cass we miss you
This song is an absolute classic! Glad you guys enjoyed it! 😄
Oh my. This one takes me down memory lane. I'm happy you guys found it and reacted to it.
Oh I remember this back in High School when this came out. I was "That's a Real different sound for the 60's" and just after the early '60's. Back then they really got into this dancing some into the "Swing" aspect of moving. It came out Cool and went really into Rock and Roll and the 'Cool' rhythm it has.
Check out: Wilson Phillips, it's their children. Hold On is their best song
Chynna Phillips Baldwin is daughter of Michelle and John Phillips of Mama and Papas. Carnie and Wendy Wilson are the daughters of Beach Boy’s Brian Wilson.
For me, musically, one of the greatest songs ever written, the harmonies are just outstanding, I could listen this over & over again, thanks for highlighting it. The enjoyment in your faces was clear, your fixed smile Asia & BJ, you were clearly in the zone. 👍
The Only one Getting Fat is Mama Cass. Good song
P.s. it was called 'folk rock'
Thank you for another great reaction (do you two know how to do any other kind? I haven't seen it!). When you are ready to dive deeper down this rabbit hole look for Monday Monday, Dedicated To The One I Love, Words of Love or I Saw Her Again. Also look for anything Mama Cass Elliot did solo or away from the group. Also, if you get the chance please add the song Lucretia MacEvil by Blood Sweat and Tears to your list of songs to get to one day! Keep up the great work on your channel - I am very impressed!!
The Mamas and The Papas - Twelve Thirty
Eurythmics… Sweet Dreams!!!
They got the name Mamas and Papas while they were watching a documentary on TV about the Hells Angels motorcycle gang.... It said they called their girlfriends "Mamas"... Cass and Michelle said I want to be a Mama, and the rest is history...
Facts!
They hosted woodstock... the mama's and the papa's are the mastermind behind a concert that changed the projection of the world.
Hit up the Doors in this era. Jim Morrison was a god in this day. Try "The End" or or "When the music is over" live at the Bowl. (It's better than the studio version.... JS)
Such a LEGEND group ..... huge fan of "Mama" Cass Elliot ..... RIP, you are missed. This song ...... BECAME a staple for several groups, including today's musicians who remixed and took this to a new modern level. The Mamas and the Papas are TRUE to me, wish more of the music in the current day had this feel ...... I'm a boy from the BEACH.
It sure warms my heart when I see young people listen to the music we older ones love so much. It's really nice when they know how to listen and appreciate it. 🙂👌🎶🎸🥁🎙🎹🎼🎵
There’s just one of them still alive the young pretty girl is Michelle Phillips
And The Grass Roots have so Much great songs a few to get you going (Temptations eyes) or ( live for today) or (midnight confession ) and they just keep going great songs
They are each an equal member of the group. Depending on the song each takes the lead. They have alot of Great songs.
Words of Love, and Creeque Alley are two great songs that y'all would probably like

This Diamond Ring 1964 by Gary Lewis & The Playboys!!
This song was one of the top hits of 1966. The follow-up hit they released was "Monday Monday," which is also worth a listen. As for the whole "Mamas and Papas" thing, you might be surprised to learn of a group called Wilson-Phillips, which is comprised of three women -- Carnie and Wendy Wilson, the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, and Carnie Phillips, the daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and Papas. Wilson Phillips broke big in the '90s with a couple of amazing albums. Check out their covers of these songs by their parents, "California Dreamin'," "Good Vibrations," "Monday Monday," "Dance Dance Dance," "Twelve Thirty," "Don't Worry Baby," "Dedicated to the One I Love," "God Only Knows," and a few others like, "California," and their breakout hit, "Hold On." These three women came from such amazingly harmonic lineage, it's not surprising that their music is steeped in beautiful harmonies. I know you'd dig 'em. And then you'd know what these Mamas and Papas (and Brian Wilson and his wife) created.
Can you react to "CALIFORNIA DREAMIN" BY SIA, is a cover but you have to lisen to it.
Don't worry about what you don't know ... we didn't know either until we heard the music we weren't born knowing it..... just enjoy the music.
If you want some old throw-back stuff, try Patsy Cline. And everyone always reacts to Crazy because it's the first result. But IMO Walking After Midnight, I Fall to Pieces, and She's Got You are better.
SAD FACT:
Only Michelle Phillips (Skinny one) is alive in the whole band. 4 June 1944. she is now 77yr
Cass Elliot (Cubby one) 19 September 1941 - 29 July 1974 she died at the age of 32 from a heart attack.
