Mama Cass’s “Dream a Little Dream of Me” is a must listen!
Absolutely! Wonderful voice.
One of the greatest. Great ref!
Yesss!!!
The Mamas & the Papas were a great folk rock group in the 60's. I had their records. They were known for their smooth harmonies. They had lots of great hits such as "Monday, Monday", "Dedicated To The One I Love", "Words Of Love", "Dancing In The Street", "Look Through My Window", "Creeque Alley", "Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)", "Safe In My Garden", "I Saw Her Again" etc. Mama Cass Elliot went solo & had a big hit with "Dream A Little Dream Of Me".
It's almost a crime that you didn't include "Go Where You Want To Go" and "Somebody Groovy". Two amazing songs of theirs.
One of the best songs ever
RIP John, Denny & Cass
"monday monday" was the group's only #1 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100
Believe it or not, American cars had a big influence on pop music in the 60's. Most cars of that era only had an AM radio, which had mostly treble and mid-range sound. Bass was almost non-existent. So pop music was arranged to sound good on an AM radio. FM stereo didn't become common in American cars until the early 70's. Nice reaction Em!
I was 13 years old in 1966 and this is the song that got me and my friends living in the midwest begin our dreams of California. Some made it there and I didn't but it was a fun dream.
Mama Cass is the difference maker in this group, she had a beautiful voice.
The '60's had the best music and real musicians.
There's a family connection to Wilson Phillips who recorded "hold on for one more day".
More from the folk-rock group, The Mamas and the Papas:
Monday, Monday
Go Where You Wanna Go
I Saw Her Again
Dedicated to the One I Love
Creeque Alley
Dream a Little Dream of Me
Michelle Phillips (the thinner girl) was married to John Phillips (the taller guy). He woke her up one night from a deep sleep and insisted she write down and work on this song. She got co-writing credit for California Dreamin', which turned into a gold mine. She says it was the best sleep she's ever missed.
She inspired the song by complaining NY was too cold, and wished she was home in SoCal. Also, she loved old churches and had been visiting them.
He later on woke up his daughter for a different reason. SMH
@@treetopjones737 John Phillips was absolute garbage.
if I understood correctly the principle of the RUclips channel, it is a person who is listening for the first time to songs that everyone has been listening to forever
Monday Monday, Creque Alley,. Fabulous harmonies - all of them.
Michelle Phillips went on to be an American soap opera TV star.
"Dedicated to the one I love" is my favourite, because it's different
Everybody loves *California Dreamin*
It's one of those songs where everything about it is just right 👍😎
One of the top groups from the 60's, all the top artist were popular because of their singing talent
One of my favorite 'moody' songs. The twin twanging guitars and the echoing verses are so great - It starts off so well and then the drum kicks in 🤩 Throw in the flute bridge and it's a haunting track.
It's so funny you term it Moody music, cause I always find myself playing Moody Blues after listening to them!
Good health to you.
@@nickrizzi4927 Moody Blues makes a great combo with Mamas & Papas 👍
I recommend you hear Monday Monday by the Mamas and Papas next. Beautiful harmonies.
I'll check it out!
Emma! Great to see you again after quite a while. Dear young lady! This group and their music is the DNA of us ol folk.
With your ear for quality you will really enjoy it, as will we watching your discovery!
Best to all!
“Twelve Thirty” is a great song
Micelle Phillips who has the soprano voice, co wrote the song California Dreamin. She later became an accomplished actress and model.who starred in the night time soap opera KnotsLanding and numerous movies and guest on television shows.
Emma, you need to do their song "I Saw Her Again". The lyrics were truth about interpersonal situations in the band.
Easily one of the greatest vocal groups in history. No doubling of vocal tracks there, that's just four people singing; the reverb was usually added while mixing. Their harmonies were so perfect that they frequently created an overtone which gave the impression of a fifth voice, which the group nicknamed "Harvey". You picked up on their strong folk background which really shows in their voicing arrangements.
It's definitely worth checking out are from their catalogue. Besides the hits everyone will recommend ("Monday, Monday", "Dream A Little Dream Of Me", etc.), I always suggest "I Call Your Name" and "Look Through My Window".
Denny Doherty ( the soloist ) was the only Canadian in the group. Another great song is “ Monday, Monday “
Absolute classic song, epitomises the 60's
Hello Emma, now you must hear Monday, Monday. They have great old folk songs.
This is so worth the dive. Monday, Monday by the group, and Dream A Little Dream Of Me by Mama Cass as a solo artist are essential. There's also major drama with this group that spans decades. Beautiful music, sordid tales and unspeakable allegations. But the music is outstanding!
Michelle Phillips the female singer and John Phillips were married and had a child named Chynna Phillips who you might know as part of the Wilson Phillips singing group
Vietnam music from the 60s.
Love it ❤❤❤
Lead Singer (Denny) Is Canadian ... I Believe ... Off The Top Of My Head ...
March 27 2024 (1453 hrs)
Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Good ol' Maritimer !!! 🍁🍁🍁🤜🤛😠 👍🏿👍🏽👍✌🏼🖖🍁🌻💛💙🇺🇦
Part of the soundtrack of the 60s, one unrivaled in the history of popular music! I grew in Cali, so I could totally understand the sentiments expressed by those longing for the warmth of this great state... Thanx Emma, for reminding me of my youth!!!
Some little known trivia. This song was originally recorded by Barry McGuire of "Eve of Destruction" Fame! It was written by John and Michelle Phillips for Barry McGuire to record and for them to sing background on. After Maguire recorded it John and Michelle decided to take a shot on it, using the exact same instrument and backing vocal track McGuire did, and that's when The Mamas and Papas were born.
Denny Doherty went on to play the Harbourmaster in a childrens program called Theodore Tugboat, I loved watching it with my son.
Mama Cass had the premiere voice in the group. Their harmonies as a group worked so well though.
Pure voices. No auto tune.
Always like the Call & Answer style. And singing along.
I heard a story about the song that may be apocryphal since I can’t find any mention of it online. The group was rather unknown playing folk music in California in the early sixties. They got a message from a friend who wanted to know if they wanted to come and play at the hotel he was managing. They agreed and played for a while until they were let go by the hotel. They had little money and started island hopping using one member’s parent’s American Express card. The parents closed the card and it went on the “Do not accept” list that was mailed to merchants. When the Mamas found out, they were able to book a flight to New York. They lived in New York with had a bid folk-singing vibe. Since they were from LA, the New York winter was depressing. Michelle Philips liked to visit churches but her husband, who went to Catholic school, had zero interest. Michelle went into one church and pretended to pray. Some time later, her husband woke her up at night and had an idea for a some. They wrote together and sang in on the phone to their agent. He loved it and sent them tickets back to LA. After some time, it caught on. Maybe some or parts of the story is true but I like the tale.
Big pleasure to see you Emma every time. That peeps who can meet you irl and practice music are so lucky! You are such a sensitive person, very special girl. Enjoy this warm spring days
Oh, thank you !!!! 🙏 you too!!!
A great band from the 60s who were only together for a short time but had lots of hits like "Dedicated to the one I Love", "Words of Love" and "Monday, Monday".
They Were So Good. I Loved Them. Pete sr 😊❤
You know, I bought some shirts and neckwear that belonged to the Mama's and Papa's. All the sleeves are brown and the tie is gray
They have a fairly deep catalog of exquisitely crafted tunes. Everyone reacts to this and "Monday, Monday"...but there are SO many more! Try "Go Where You Wanna Go", "I Saw Her Again", "No Salt On Her Tail", "Dedicated to the One I Love", "Twelve Thirty"...
These guys were big medicine back in the day. Lots of hits. This song has been covered many times. Love your reaction ☮
The music of the 60's you can't beat!
The Mamas And The Papas - "Dedicated To The One I Love".
Great song choice. Sia does a cover of this and her voice is incredible.
My favourite version is more rare.
Eddie Hazel ex parliament/funkadelic guitarist. It's more bluesy and sounds like Jimi Hendrix.
This is a flavor from "The Hippie Generation"
The Mammas and Pappas were together as a band less than 2 years but their impact on Rock music echos to this day. The only memeber who still living is Michelle who (I Believe) was 16 when this recording was done.
Back when music was good. When singers could sing without the aid of auto tune, and people could still incorporate instruments into their music before synthesizers made everything sound artificial. If you're looking for other songs from this group, they have many hits. One of my favorites is Creeque Alley, which is a funny story about how other musical groups of that era were getting famous while this group sat around trying to think of music and lyrics and waiting for their big break.
Monday Monday !
Not only a really beautiful piece of music, I also love how they used a strong stereo channel separation back then.
Ok, it´s not that natural (in a live setting the listener had to be on stage to experience it that strong), but it adds kind od a dynamic and often, like here, emphasizes the back and forth between the singers and the location of the instruments.
The soloist, Denny Doherty (RIP), was from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Many other artists from N.S.- Anne Murray, Hank Snow, The Rankin Family, April Wine, etc.
He wrote this song on a napkin in 5 minutes
🎉 For future reference: Bobby Vinton…”Mr. Lonely” (1962), “Blue Velvet” (1963) and ”Roses are Red” (1962).
When I was kid in the 80’s and when this came on the radio, my dad would sing All The Leaves are Brown because I sh!t on the ground. Every time and I laughed as I heard it for the first time. I thought it was hilarious.
I love you and your reactions, Emma!!! You're lovely!!!.🥰❤️🌹
Thank you so much!!
@@SingwithEmmatoday You're welcome, dear! 🥰❤️🌹
You guy's will find that The Beach Boys also do a great cover version of "California Dreaming'." Another very good Beach Boy song worth checking out
is "I Can Hear Music" from the summer of '69.
thank you, Emma, your Geeting in the groove love it more Emma more like this.
Love that! ☺️
As a child of the sixties this type of music was playing at someplace or sometime in my life. While not the music I eventually gravitated to later on, I still appreciate it.
Hi Emma. 😀
Two of them, the tall guy and the blonde girl had a daughter together, Chynna Phillips of Wilson Phillips.
Yes, along with Wendy and Carnie Wilson. Daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys.
Fantastic classic, We love you Emma, much thanks !!!
Not enough people do ‘Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)’.
💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈she says "I AM IN LOVE"💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈💈
Fun fact. When Denny sings "and I began to pray", if you listen carefully Michelle and Cass echo with "and I pretend to pray". They misheard when the song was put together and only discovered the error in a rehearsal a long time after they had been singing the song.
love this woman!!!! Nice reaction
Glad you enjoyed
Thank you for your kind reaction. A classic song from the 1960's. Diana Ankudinova recently did a cover of this song. It would be fun to hear your reaction to her version of this song.
Sadly, only the woman on the left *Michelle Phillips*is still alive...it's 50 years this year since Cass Elliott died🎩😢
❤You got it girl!💯
I just love all the renditions of this song but The Mamas and The Papas is so special.
This song also reminds me of the group called "America" which you should check out if you haven't yet. They sang this song as well.
Good one, Emma! Loved this group back in the day. They were I think the first mixed gender rock group which is why they called themselves The Mamas & The Papas. They were also at the center of the Laurel Canyon, CA music scene in the mid-60's where many, many soon to be famous singers and musicians all lived and played together, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Joni Mitchell, Jim Morrison, The Byrds, Neil Young, Frank Zappa, Jackson Brown, Linda Ronstadt, and many more who were part of the Woodstock music festival. There's a wonderful documentary about it called Laurel Canyon that was released on DVD in 2020. You should check that out sometime. Thank you for sharing this one. 🙂
# 홧팅 🍒👍!!
The song came out in the mid 60's. Also check out Monday, Monday by the group. This is the time I grew up during the hippie and free love was popular back then. During this time in the 60's there was so much great music going on. ✌✌
awesome group. Beautiful souls
M&Ps had some of the best vocal arrangements. Such an important group from that era that kind of bridged the gap between the early-mid '60s Greenwich Village, NY folk scene and the burgeoning singer/songwriter folk-rock scene in California.. San Francisco and Laurel Canyon (Los Angeles).
The alto flute solo was an improvisation done in one take by Bud Shank.
Thank you very much Emma
for your good choice!!!
My parents gave me this LP on my 1oth Christmas.
Simple Red-Holding back to years
The female leads were Michelle Phillips and Cass Elliott. Cass had her own solo career after the group broke up. She had a beautiful voice and died very young. Listen to the group Spanky and our Gang, contemporaries to the Mamas and Papas, their song Sunday Will Never Be the Same. The female lead for that band Spanky McFarland took over the Cass Elliott spot when the band got back together for short tours. While Spanky's voice was not as strong she filled in nicely.
This song brought back many wonderful memories for me. Could I suggest the Byrds
from that era singing "Turn turn turn?"
They such an amazing family group, used to listen to them all the time as a child. It's a shame that drugs, sex, and alcohol destroyed their lives
They were so good and so popular way back then! Sia does an outstanding cover of this song.
4 part harmony being sung as 2 part...
I love this song too!
there is perhaps some very slight myth that maybe Mama wasn't always pitch perfect with Michelle , impressive enjoyed the "spaced out" expression without the eye lashes , Hey Jude's Leitmotive is good to pitch up too
The big picture by tori amos and check out the music video to it.
I was devastated when Mama Cass died .
I was 12 years old , and I thought that she was wonderful .😢😊
The harmonizing on this is super tight.
They're this good without Auto tune, time when you needed actual talent to sing unlike nowadays. Such a great song.
Great song! But my favourite version is done by The Beach Boys.
Thanks for posting.
The beginning of the song if you have headphones on, you can still hear Barry McGuire’s voice singing the first few words. They scrubbed his voice off except for that little part at the beginning. It’s always gonna be there.
The Beach Boys did a fantastic cover of this song, with a good video. You should watch that one too.
Wow you never heard The Mamas and the Papas. They shaped the music of that time.
And remember, they said "pretend" to prey.
Two lesser known songs by the Mamas and The Papas -
"Shooting Star"
"Twelve Thirty"
a perfect song
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
If you watch Janis Joplin sing Ball and Chain at the Monterey Pop Festival, the camera pans to Mama Cass two or three times. She wanted to see and hear Janis.
