That is a truly beautiful song from Roberta Flack. She has an incredible voice and has many other beautiful songs like "Killing Me Softly," and she also had songs with James Ingram. My wife and I will soon be married for 50 years, and we have been blessed to have known this type of love, although there have been hardships like the loss of our oldest daughter to cancer. We had each other and our love to unite us through those very dark, difficult times. Love is the key to everything. Without love, there is nothing worthwhile. I love your beautiful reaction to this classic love song.

It is one of the most pure, beautiful declarations of love ever produced in popular music. What can you say? Pure artistry and expression. Even though we have many progressions in society like awareness of mental health and movements for equality, people are afraid to be vulnerable like this anymore. Everything now is about posturing and performing. True vulnerability scares many people.

The reason you don't hear music like this today is because everything is just a swipe or click away. It's a 60-second sound bite. People are not satisfied with what they've got. And so they are searching for the next best thing.
Songs like these take time to develop. Now, if you noticed she's with one guy. And not singing about multiple partners or a "situational" relationship. A relationship is very serious.
Ya..... today, you can have a woman for the price of a happy meal. But back then, a man had to earn the Wright to even hold her hand.
This modern way of thinking has led to 16,000,000 single mother households in the United States. It's all about getting the bag and having a roster.

Incredible Vocal Stylist of Robert Flack saturated our airwaves then. She makes my breath slow down and it’s the anticipation of her next line that creates such satisfaction , gorgeous warmth . There will always be artists, & romantics ,whether the media pays attention, but I love watching younger people discovering humanity music that came before their time. Just as the artists of the times before this ,we learn that there is more to us than the current situation. Our yearning has always been with us . Humans repeat - the styles change ,but at our core we are emotional beings. Music gives us a language that connects and expresses our complexity ☮️

I saw her at the Montreal Jazz Festival several years ago. She sang songs from her catalog but at the end of the show she said we are at a jazz festival and to me jazz is everybody taking a turn. She introduced each band member, each one a virtuoso and she introduced her keyboardist as her musical director and arranger. He was surrounded by keyboards and instead of taking a keyboard solo he started scat singing. His voice went to the low registers and he arched his back looking straight up and hit incredibly high notes. Roberta was beautiful and gracious, makes me emotional just recalling that show.

There's a link between this and Bridge Over Troubled Water . First Time Ever I Saw Your Face was written by an Anglo-Scottish folk singer , Ewan McCall , for his wife , a famous ( American ) folk singer herself , Peggy Seeger . They were instrumental in the British folk revival of the 50's and 60's , ran a famous folk club and would accommodate visiting folk singers in their house . Including Paul Simon when he was travelling the UK as an aspiring musician ( Paul wrote Homeward Bound during this time ) . Peggy's version of First Time... is very good , too as you might expect , given that it is written for and about her but Roberta knocks it clean out of the park and into orbit . One of the , if not the very best of all song covers . By the way , other aspiring musicians who were guests at Ewan and Peggy's home included Gerry Rafferty and the comedian Billy Connelly ( he started out as a folk musician ) , amongst many others . It is worth mentioning Ewan's other most well known song , Dirty Old Town which, perhaps because of its association with Irish bands like The Dubliners , is often assumed to be about Dublin or Belfast or Derry . In fact , it describes Salford , near Manchester in England . Two of the most extraordinary love songs of all time but their tone and mood are almost opposite in their romantic expression . Genius everywhere

An interesting story: In 1972 this song won the Grammy for Song of the Year. It beat out another huge hit - "American Pie" by Don Maclean. Then in 1973, Maclean was nominated for Song of the Year for "Vincent." Roberta Flack won again, this time for "Killing Me Softly," which was about the songwriter's reaction to Maclean at one of his concerts.
Oh, and the Maclean song that the songwriter reacted to was "Empty Chairs" a beautiful heartbreak of a song about a breakup. So.... 4 more songs I'd love to see you react to.

I was born in the 50s (yeah, I'm that old). As a child and young adult, life was about inventing things, coming up with fresh ideas, writing, singing, playing musical instruments and building 'stuff'. Along with calculus and physics, schools incorporated shop classes into their curriculum. Photography, art, woodworking, autoshop, etc... were all part of our development. We exercised the right side of our brains; the side responsible for creativity. That's not the case anymore. Hobby shops, stores that deal in electronic parts, sewing notions, woodworking tools, and arts & crafts supplies are dwindling. Sure, there are box stores where you can buy stuff, but knowledgeable salespeople are nonexistent.
On-the-job training and vocational education have given way to useless degrees that look good on paper but have little value in the real world. Some companies hire anybody with a degree whether it's job related or not. Image is everything I guess.
From reselling items online to 'sampling' music, people have gotten used to feeding off the work of others. There seems to be a lack of risk takers and people willing to live a modest life doing what they know or love. These days it's about instant fame and instant riches. Success is now measured by the number of 'hits' or 'likes' one receives.
If you want to influence people, write a song, a poem, a book. Create some art, some music, a screenplay. Build stuff, break stuff, fix stuff. Know how stuff works. Learn something new, learn to live with your failures and then learn to improve and eventually succeed.
Who do you blame for today's lack of creativity; recent generations or those who raised them?

There's a genre that even today makes meaningful music, and that's folk and (some) adult contemporary music. Not the kind of love songs like this, generally, but still songs with meaning. Brandi Carlile is a good example. Try The Joker or Table for One, just incredible, or The Story for a modern-day love song.
I grew up in the 70s and 80s, and we had so much great music that we were spoiled forevermore.

Loved this song way back when it came out! Andrei, you often talk about music now vs. then... I wonder if there are singers who perform similar songs today but production companies who don't see the value in promoting them. Cynicism? The almighty dollar (at least in the U.S.)? Hmmmm.

  • @donstratton6343

Listening to the Peggy Seeger live version and this, I see how the whole song has, by slowing down the tempo, introducing orchestration (the bass line adds so much), and, I think, singing one octave lower, establishes more depth for the song. Each version has their beauty and appeal. For me, though, this song is wonderful in either genre, fold or modern ballad, perhaps a characteristic of a great song.
Special mentions: George Michael's version and Miley Cyrus' version. The sound quality of Angelina Jordan's version, accompanied by acoustic guitar only, diminishes what would also be an excellent version.
    Good review.

You two are such absolutely 100% romantics. I know Andre is. But, yes, you are too Dominique. I love it. And this, of course, is a perfect song to touch deep human love for real couples. And Andre, I agree that many people miss the simple beauty of a warm relationship and a heart-centered life. Too much obsession with fame, fortune, power, and toys.

Beautiful reaction, yes the world would be a better place. Older music, especially the love songs were more “other centered” and emotional. Today’s music is more self centered and physical. IMO

There is a slower, gentler version on her "First Take" album. I encourage you to listen to it to hear the differences. In any event, both renditions are exquisite. Such a voice!

Well Andre you are right. I’m 65 years old and I’ve never had a love like this song conveys. Maybe that’s why I ended up crying my eyes out. But I still love your reactions. Give Domenica a kiss

*A suggestion: ALWAYS listen to the studio recording to you reaction. Most often that is the version on which the artist (s) invested most of their creative energy. So sad you didn't listen to Roberta's Grammy winning performance.
