One of the most beautiful songs of all time!
As well as Killing me softly.
It truly can bring you to tears - 🤧🤧
One of the best songs ever 🤗🤗🎼🤗
Chills to the heart
Beautiful ❤️
So many beautiful voices in that day. It's hard to rank them. Sings with passion. This music today is blah. Boring this is true music. When music stirs you that is real music.
She was Born to sing.
I'm Happy I was born to hear her. 😌
Like Karen Carpenter, Roberta has that special "it factor" in her voice.
I don't think Karen ever recorded this.
What a shame.
Maybe Richard thought she couldn't top Roberta Flack's version.
@Eschew Obfuscation Roberta doesn’t need an edge. She’s a beautiful woman with a smooth feminine voice.
That's another understated yet brilliant voice, Karen Carpenter's. And I love her as well for having been a girl drummer.
#gonetoosoon
@Eschew Obfuscation No, Roberta possesses a vastly superior voice!
@@thisblackgirloverhere9013 She's basically super incredible.
She is the perfect example of a truly beautiful singer. A singer doesn’t have to be over the top. The simplicity of her vocals are pure. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Completely agree, Danelle.
One of my favorite songs ever. Just beautiful.
I agree completely, Danielle. And "pure" is a perfect word for her vocals!
Awesome
❤️
Damn we had great music.
We were so spoiled. We didn’t know it back then... this kind of music will never come again.
And no autotuning, the scourge of this generation.
I was 13 years old the first time I heard Roberta Flack, the next time I listened and I have never recovered!
Right!!! Nothing like music from the 60's - 90's. R&B Soul!!
I guess we forget just how good our musicians were.
No auto tune. No skimpy clothes required. True talent shinning on its own. Pure perfection. Nobody else has ever come close to covering this as brilliantly.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Without a doubt!
❤️
Paul Sharkey I couldn't agree more. I've loved this song since before I was ten. My daddy collected jazz and blues music and I owe my music appreciation to him.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Her voice, when she sings this gives me chills.
Me too ! It actually makes me cry , a happy cry!
YES! And sometimes a tear in my eye because of how beautiful she sounds
No need to look for other versions. This is as good as it gets!
100%! I know the history of the song too and have listened to the original and some other cover versions. Roberta's is IT.
Ditto! I was 11 and never forgot
Celine Dion version is really good. Celine does the song and Roberta justice.
In my opinion the ultimate love song of the last sixty years at least.
True. Some songs just can’t be covered. Like why even bother. This is one of them.
I think you’ve begun to realize the variety and talent we had available growing up in those days. So, so, so much more out there to discover.
she's one of the only singers to win the Grammy for Record Of The Year two years in a row, with this song in 1972 and Killing Me Softly in 1973.
Song is so beautiful, gentle, and yet powerful.
Goosebumps, this is how a love song was meant to be sung!
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird that was there at my command...
64 years old, I have heard this song many many times, and still I get goosebumps.
So sweet, so honest.....
Her voice is a pure gift to the world!
Roberta Flack has a lullaby voice; so pure and beautiful, the way you’d sing to a baby. Your reaction was perfect.
This song always takes my breath away. She puts her entire heart and soul into it. Thank you for bringing this!
❤️
I've listened to this song for decades. It's fun to watch someone else's reaction to hearing this for the first time. The thing is, I still have that same reaction after decades of hearing it. That's a classic.
So true... this song hits one every single time
Me too.....there are no words to describe its perfection
Roberta Flack, She was never underrated nor underappreciated that I remember. Her voice was pure. The lyrics from her heart at least that's what I felt listening too her. Great song and reaction...
Absolutely! That’s what I said.
This song is so beautiful, it brings tears to my eyes every time...........
There are only a very few woman with a voice that touches your soul like a soft spring breeze and that includes Roberta Flack and Patsy Cline.
Gladys Knight - Midnight Train to Georgia
Etta James - At Last
Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now
Sade - Smooth Operator
Carly Simon - Nobody Does It Better
Anita Baker - Sweet Love
Stevie Nicks - Landslide
kd Lang - Crying
Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved a Man
Marilyn McCoo is one of those vocalists too.
Also Eva Cassidy R.I.P.
@DTXer Rock Mixer I'd like to "like" this reply several times but it won't let me. KC was in a class by herself...
And... listen to odetta... and to phoebe snow...
When these songs came out she was not underrated- she was on the radio and well known. Her voice is like butter. The control, the artistry and quality of her tone is amazing.
This song still gives me goosebumps....her voice is magic !!
"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" was played as the wake-up music on flight day 9 to the astronauts aboard Apollo 17, on their last day in Lunar orbit (Friday, 12/15/1972) before returning to earth, thus ending the last manned explorations of the Moon. The use of the song was most likely a reference to the "face" of the moon below the spacecraft.
Sweet Thang wow! I never knew that. Thanks so much for sharing that! 🌻
This is epic!
Thank you. Amazing fact.
The first time I fell in love with this song was in the movie Play Misty For Me. It went on to win 2 Grammys.
That movie freaked me out! Think I was about 17yrs old. Love this song, but always makes me think of the movie.
Wow that was the last movie I saw at a drive inn
@@mopanimickey1591Clint Eastwood was in the movie Play Misty for me. This song was played on it.
This is a classic!!! My GOODNESS her voice
This is the best version ever made.
Nancy Miltier Absolutely.
Wasn't she just amazing? Perfection. We all loved her and ,so much respect for her.
I could listen to this legend sing forever. One of the most beautiful songs. I can't imagine anyone else singing this. It belongs to the Queen Roberta ✨
I thought she never got as much credit as she deserved. A beautiful artist.
She's unique and she has such a wonderful calm, clear voice. And the song's meaning is completely there. For someone so young, you really learn quickly and you have the soul of a poet.
Understandably makes sense why old school music beats new musics assssss! One of my favorite songs! Such depth!!!
Dont bother trying to listen to other versions, NO ONE can sing this song and give you the feeling that flows through your very soul as it does listening to Roberta Flack sing this song. This song was made just for her, no one else comes close
She is one of those singers so tragically overlooked. Such a silken beautiful voice.
Well she did receive two Grammy Awards in 1973 and 1974. First time a solo artist won back to back years for Record of the Year.
@@mspfinney yeah but that was then. My point is that her name should be mentioned much more often when the conversation of great female artist of the past is initiated. Even people who have never heard their music have heard of Aretha, Whitney, Madonna, etc beacause they are lauded much more often. 🙂
And Madonna was never as good as Ms Flack and I doubt she ever will. She was lucky she came on the scene when singing became about visuals as opposed to voice. To me the 80s marked a real descent in quality and the industry never recovered from it. It's why I never stopped listening to the music my parents loved (both were born in the 40s) and I impressed upon my own child the importance of filling one's head and ears with anything other than the drivel of the day that's being pushed on listeners.
Absolutely One of the MOST BEAUTIFUL SONGS Ever
She was one of my favorite such a cool lady and voice. When singers had real voices and not autotune. We need this again in music and the world.
I heard this omg in high school, 2004, and I thought to myself, this is the deepest heartfelt song I’ve ever heard.
Oh Roberta! One of the finest singers I ever heard. The feeling and emotion from this lady just warms your soul. And the arrangement is so subtle and beautiful too. The words, the music and the voice, heavenly!
The song and Roberta, BELLISSIMA!
Her voice is like a warm cozy blanket. It’s silky smooth. Perfection!!!!
When that song first came out everyone was as mesmerised as you are now. I don't think she's underrated. We remember.
Can you imagine someone writing this song about you?! Best love song ever. 🥺❤️💕
This, for my money, is the best vocal EVER, Can't listen to it, too powerful. This song makes love seem possible in this world.
Her voice is so pure. This is my favorite song of hers. So glad to see it moved you too.
Love this song. Written in 1957 by British songwriter Ewan MacColl for singer Peggy Seeger, who would later become his wife.
You can find his version on RUclips. Alas despite his writing the song his rendition is not very good . Usually I like the originals.
Peggy Seeger is still gigging in 2020 on the UK folk circuit.
The song is very good. Unfortunately Ewan was a fraud. Changed his name. Tried to capture the copyright of English Traditional music.
@@mocrg Actually, MacColl was an effective performer of his own compositions. Check out Champion at Keeping Them Rolling (although I prefer Eric Andersen's version).
This place is the encyclopedia of musical knowledge. What a treasure. Seriously.
Her voice just floats on the air, it's so light and effortless. And it soars.
When you ramble you know that it did something to you. You just got in the presence of greatness
The reviewer is required to break it up because of Copyright conditions.
The way she expresses herself with her music is both vulnerable and powerful.
Perfectly stated, Lisa. So Beautiful.
Beautiful yet heartbreaking at the same time.
One of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. I've seen her in person and she sounds just as good. No auto tune for her. Real and pure.
That must have been such a great experience!
Wow, you were lucky. I did manage to see Randy Crawford who was incredible too. She sang with the mic on her lap and still lifted the roof with her voice
And here's another reason the 70's are often touted as the pinnacle of modern music.
This performance is incomparable.
One of the most beautiful love songs ever! She was one of the best.
This song is the definition of openness and honesty in communication and depth of feeling.
Phew! I'm having a tough time with this song, and prob your's and everyone else's reaction. I AM an old fart, but in 1972 I was married to my first love, we had a new baby and I worked at a minimum wage job, living in a 1 room apartment with a bathroom in the hall. THIS song, sung by one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard was the one that along with the Righteous Brothers "Unchained Melody" were the numbers that made my shabby assed existence, along with our love, work w/ my Lady, my last LADY. Years down the road, we divorced and went our separate ways, she remarried...TWICE, and then passed on. Listening to this and seeing your reaction, literally has me in fucking tears. Thanx, I guess.
This song was written by Scotland's own Ewan MacColl (1957). It was first sung by one of America's greatest folk groups 'Peter Paul and Mary' (1965). This version done by Roberta Flack (1972) for the Clint Eastwood movie 'Paly Misty For Me.' Is the rendition that is the most played, and listen to in the world. It has become the quintessential version of them all. Classic!
We can understand every single beautiful word she sings ! 😍👍🇬🇧 Roberta Cleopatra flack 87yr young
The poetry of this song & Roberta's soothing vocals together make sheer MAGIC!
As a nerdy, greasy-haired, rock and roll kid in the 1970's, I could still appreciate this song.
The First Time Ever... First recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary...then came Roberta, stepped it up, created an ageless classic beyond beauty!!! Moving, still, after all these years... 💜💜
It's been covered by countless others, none, more beautiful than this!!!
And Now I Cry ,,,,I. Weep,,, We Need Love in This World Now and Forever
This was a HUGE hit when I was in High School
There,s not many songs that give you goosebumps when you hear them , this is one of them 🥰🇬🇧
I remember growing up in the 70s, and she was a household name. She is captivating, isn’t she? I could listen to her forever. If I could sing like her, I wouldn’t know what stress is!
This song still makes me cry, even after all these years. Such a pure voice and beautiful song.
The first time I heard Roberta I took note of her voice; for one to hold their tone on a slow song, um, excellent control.
I love this woman's beautiful soulful voice. It's almost as if there is just a small amount of crying to her voice. No don't listen to anyone else trying to sing her song's they will never be able to do her justice, I'm not kidding you, if you want to hear another beautiful singer give a listen to Melissa Manchester " Misty Blue", and another singer Jessie Colter's song, "I'm not Lisa", these other two women are also in a class of their own. Thanks for the great reaction my friend ❤️
Simply Angelic….. beautiful song, beautifully sang. Perfection. Pure heaven.
We were once so full of life and love, and positive and sensual. What an amazing song, and an AMAZING SINGER. She feels EVERY WORD! And, I'm a musician and a songwriter, to keep a tempo that slow and not crash is a tribute to the passion she sings and the feel the musicians had. And she is a great pianist.
My favorite version as well. You get the full range and power of her voice. Incredible.
"Wow, my God" - exactly! You summed it up right there! This has to be one of the most accomplished vocal performances of all time. Roberta's phrasing and timing, understanding the silences before transporting us with those soul-lifting high points that take you somewhere otherwordly. Wow! Pitch-perfect, soul-touching artistry and your reaction really encapsulated that. Have you heard her and Donny Hathaway singing "Where is the love?"? Two of the most amazing voices ever on one sublime song!💕 I think you would love that if you don't already know it.
I honestly also like Sergio Mendes' Where Is The Love. I'm not sure if it was Lani Hall (Herb Alpert's second wife) who sang lead but I like a lot of his music with Brasil '66 and '77.
Sends shivers down my spine! Her voice is like velvet ...
One of the best songs in the world. So innocent and lovely. Love as delicate as it gets.
There at are no words to express what this song does to me . I’m in tears . I’m a puddle of emotions . All I can think of is the first time I saw my daughter. Arethas voice could be the last voice on earth I would hear and I would die happy .
One of the most beautiful songs ever sung, this is the calibre of music I grew up with, proper musicians who could play instruments and had incredible voices , true masters of their art. Sublime
Indeed.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written, it's by singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl.
I can completely understand your reaction to this wonderful song. In my opinion The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face is the most beautiful song ever produced. The song, and Flacks voice, just wash over you like a warm embrace. Flack is also a classically trained pianist and a former teacher.
When she sings she makes it seem so natural and effortless. An amazing talent.
You could never mistake her for anyone else, she was amazing...
She makes this a holy hymn to love.
I cry every time I hear this song...so incredibly beautiful!
The most beautiful love song that I have ever heard. I am 58 years old and nothing compares to this in my opinion So beautiful it still makes me cry
Best version of this song EVER. I remember listening to this as a kid. Just gives me chills.
This is the record that turned me onto soul. I was about 13 and played it time and again. It's actually a cover, the original was by Scottish folk Ewan MacColl. Roberta is one of the great soul singers. Killing Me Softly was inspired by Don McClean
She has an amazing voice...👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Her voice is incredibly beautiful....Goosebumps
You've gone and done it. I'm boohooing like a baby.
I knew we would get a big and quick "OH MY GOD" on this one,lol You rock dude!
One of the most romantic songs ever recorded. The instrumentation is perfect, but Roberta's delivery elevates it to a level that is just unbelievable.
She is definitely as good as it gets! Such a wonderful tone in her voice! Amazing!
Floors me every single time after hundreds of listens.
This song invokes memories of the Clint Eastwood movie “play misty for me”he plays a radio DJ who is being stalked by a crazed female fan who calls him up and asks him to”play a song called Misty it’s a thriller type movie worth seeking out if you’re into thriller type movies..enjoy and be well
Robert Santana yep me too. I’m always waiting to hear the ocean waves when the song starts.
Great movie.
Love the movie👍
And of course Johnny Mathis’ song “Misty” is a great song too.
@@JonS0107 Yep. It inspired the movie. "Look at me, I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree,..."
Roberta Flack is so spectacular!!! This song is so beautiful.
Roberta Flack sings this so beautifully, no other version could compete!s
A beautiful song sung to perfection! Makes me cry every time I hear it.
No crazy runs needed! Pure beauty. Boy, this sure reminds me of my mom in the 1970's.
I don’t care how many times I here this, it makes me cry!!!! So beautiful
What a beautifully haunting song! It’s so perfect!
Every person wants to have someone feel this way of them. One of the purest most gorgeous love songs ever imo. And you're correct, no sense listening to any other version of this.
This is almost too beautiful to bear. I've been a fan since the 70's and it never gets old. So nice to hear it again. I like it so much that you "get" old school. 💋
You have to know what love is to like and enjoy this song.👍👋❤
Absolutely beautiful voice...a gift from God!
