This brings back so many memories! My Grandmother bought me a miniature rocking chair when I was 11 that played this tune, I have since given it to one of my grandchildren and passed it on, I have instructed her to pass it on down to her own grandchildren one day and so it continues!

John's greatest passion was flight. He was the son of an Air Force pilot He purchased an experimental plane and was test flying it when it crashed and he died. He was a leading candidate to be the “first civilian in space” on the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986.Denver planned to write a song in space, but Christa McAuliffe was chosen instead to be the first teacher in space. He wrote a song about/to her called Flying For Me.

I had the biggest crush on him when I was in junior high school. He came to the Hampton Roads Coliseum in Virginia and a bunch of us went to see him. At the end of the show everyone ran to a door they thought he would be going out of. I don't like crowds so I stayed away. Then I looked to my right and there he was waving at me with a smile. Unfortunately this was before cell phones so I didn't get his picture but it absolutely made my day.

Will always remember this one because "way back" in 81, my friend and I were looking around his house for some loose change to buy a gallon or two for his little Mazda. The radio on on in the background and suddenly (and this is the only time I've heard it actually happen) the song was interrupted with, "We interrupt this program for a special news bulletin". It was announced that there had been an attempt on President Reagan's life in D.C. (When Hinkley shot Reagan and several others)

Spread that joy indeed. Sometimes the simplest images and motifs, if played & sung at the right time, with enough skill & conviction, are just what folks need. John Denver came along at a time when that was certainly true--in the wake of some truly awful collective traumas, many dashed hopes, and much uncertainty about what the present had in store, and what the future could or should be. In the turbulent wake of all that, he sounded a gentle but clarion call to reconnect spiritually & emotionally to the natural world, to find meaning & sustaining beauty there, and that call resonated across a generational divide that had seemed pretty insurmountable at the time. That's probably why he remains such a beloved artist of his era.

John Denver had one of the most beautiful voices ever. True, pure talent that shone so brightly in the simplest of songs. Gone way to soon. As someone else mentioned, the song was written for the 1972 TV movie “Sunshine” . The movie is based on a true story of a 19 yr girl who had a little girl and then discovered she had bone cancer. The movie was developed using journals she had left for her daughter. Another heartbreakingly beautiful song from this movie is “My Sweet Lady”, made all the more poignant when taken in context (young mother dying of cancer).

He has another great acoustic song called "This old guitar". There is a live version where he tells a little story about his guitar that is really cool.
